“Welcome to school,” teacher says to Jamal. Jamal likes the yellow chairs and red tables, because red is his favourite colour!

What will I do in school? Jamal, Sabi and Michael are painting today. “My favourite colour is red too,” Michael says to Jamal. Sabi laughs and says, “My favourite colour is yellow!” Jamal is painting with his second favourite colour. Do you know what colour Jamal is using? There are lots of other exciting things to do in Oakfield Primary, including:

How will I make friends? Oakfield Primary Academy has a fantastic playground, and Michael, Sabi and Jamal made friends by playing with each other on the slide.
“I’m jumping on the wobbly bridge,” Jamal says to a new friend called Sarah. “Do you want to jump too?”

Sabi and Michael like making sandcastles too. “Can you put lots of sand in the pink bucket?” Sabi asks Michael. “Let’s see if we can make a castle,” says Michael excitedly.

What if I’m hungry? In the morning break-time you can have fruit and drink. Sabi likes bananas and milk.
At dinner time, the dinner ladies will help you get the food you like. Jamal is having potatoes, broccoli and vegetarian chilli.

When you have your hot dinner, or your packed lunch, you will sit with your friends.
Sabi has a packed lunch that her dad made, and she loves her cheese and cucumber sandwich, apple and cheese puff corn snacks.
Lunchtime supervisors will help you with drinks.

What happens at home-time? At home-time you will put on your coat, collect your book bags and water bottles…and sit on the floor waiting for an adult to collect you. Jamal waves to his parents when they come to collect him. “I have a new book in my book-bag”, says Jamal. “It will be great fun to read it with you at home.”
Sabi is really enjoying listening to a story about a monkey. “I wish I had a pet monkey,” says Sabi. “He would be really good on the school climbing frame.” “I’ve had a fantastic time today.” Michael says to the teacher. “I can’t wait to come back tomorrow.”

Helping to get your child
Reception Ready Parents often ask us what their child will need to be able to do before starting reception class. To help, we have written this guide.
Taking shoes on and off
Using tissues to wipe and blow their nose
You may find it useful to read this through with your child before they start reception, and have practice sessions for anything they are not sure about.
Reading their name We will teach your child how to recognise letters and numbers, but it will help your child to settle in if they can recognise their own name on coat pegs, class drawers and on their clothing. Try writing their name on items around your home, and help them to spot and read their name. Sabi has found her name on her coat peg. She is very pleased to see her name so she knows where to hang her coat.
Write their name in lower case We will teach your child how to write their name, but it is helpful if they already know how to write their name when they start. This helps with things such as labelling any work they do in class. Help them to practise by encouraging them to write their name on paper at home. Michael is writing his name .He is going to do a picture and wants to make sure that everyone knows who has done it. 2
It will help them settle in more quickly and more confidently.
Going to toilet on their own We encourage our children to become more independent in reception, so your child will go to the toilet by themselves. They will flush the toilet, and wash and dry their own hands. Please encourage your child to do this at home. Michael has been to the toilet and is now washing and drying his hands. He loves the bubbles the soap makes.
Fastening and unfastening coat and cardigans Throughout the school day, your child will be taking their coat and cardigan on and off several times. Make sure that your child is familiar with using zips and buttons by practising this at home. You can also help them by choosing clothing that has easy fastenings. Sabi is putting on her coat to go outside to play. Her coat has big bright buttons so it is easy for her to do them up. 3
Using tissues to wipe and blow your nose Especially during the early months of school, children often have colds. To prevent the spread of germs, please supply your child with tissues if they have a cold. Encourage them to wipe and blow their nose frequently. Michael has a runny nose. He wipes it with his tissue so it doesn’t tickle his nose and he can breathe easier.
Taking shoes on and off Your child will also need to take off their outdoor shoes from time to time. Help them to feel confident doing this by choosing shoes that are easy for your child to take on and off independently. For example, you may want to avoid lace-up shoes and instead think about shoes with Velcro fastenings. Sabi is putting her school shoes on. She loves her shiny new shoes that are so easy to put on.
