Dear parents, carers and friends, Once again, I am delighted to introduce our latest version of the Vision magazine, which contains some of the activities, opportunities and achievements that our students have been involved with this term.

It has been a pleasure to welcome so many parents back into school this year. Whether that’s been at parents’ evenings, the newly formed Parent Forum, or any other school event, the importance of that face-to-face

contact has always been a priority for our school. The opportunity for children to play sport once again, both social and competitive, as well as accessing a wide range of enrichment opportunities has reminded us of the importance of a well-rounded education. We have picked up where we left off on the sports field by winning the Manchester Year 8 & Year 9 boys indoor athletics championships and then going on to triumph in the county championships too, what a phenomenal achievement from those boys. There is lots of sports content in this edition too which I hope you enjoy, it has been wonderful to enjoy the children competing again. It has also been wonderful to start to plan enrichment activities off site for the students again. So far, this has included an art trip to see the Van Gogh Alive exhibition at Media City, a trip to The Palace Theatre to watch Willy Russell’s Blood Brother’s and a weekend in the Lake District for an orienteering challenge. We also welcomed rock performer, Bronnie, into school for a live performance. Staff and students alike have

all really embraced the opportunity to plan activities and I look forward to sharing more news with you in the future. The extension to the current school continues to progress well and we are hopeful that we will be able to move in come September. The addition of a new dining space will allow children the time and space to eat with a real sense of dignity, and the state-of-the-art LRC will provide the voracious readers in our community a place to enjoy a wide range of literature. There will also be new classrooms, a chapel and some significant development of the outdoor space – it really is a very exciting time here at Our Lady’s. Ghyll Head Kath Fry Challenge 2022

We will be celebrating Easter in the next week and following a very difficult two years, it really does feel like a time of renewal, of life restored. During Lent the staff and children have been industrious as always in supporting the most in need in our society. This has included, form groups raising money through ‘grow a fiver’ selling baked goods, washing staff cars and making craft items to sell. We honoured Cafod family fast day by selling a simple vegan soup and encouraging children to donate any funds that they might have spent on tuck items like chocolate and crisps to Cafod. For Saint Patrick ’s Day this year we sold emerald green ribbons and all the proceeds were sent to the Ukraine appeal. We have also taken the children to Savio House, which entailed a spiritual retreat in the Bollington countryside. The children learned about the beauty of being away from screens and being present in nature. One of the exercises that they complete whilst they are there is to write a letter to their future selves, they address how they feel at the present moment and where they would like to be in 12 months from now. Savio House then post the letters in a year’s time and they can reflect on how far they have come.

Happy Easter

We had lots of fun promoting reading for pleasure. Students enjoyed a ‘Booknic’ where they shared a picnic lunch and were introduced to different books we have in the library. They really enjoyed discussing their favourite books and swapping with others. All students took part in a form time quiz filled with pictures of staff reading books in interesting locations – students were challenged to guess the teacher and the location whilst learning about teacher’s favourite reads! Some lucky KS3 pupils also took part in a virtual football reading quiz, with host Kelly Somers alongside some other famous football faces who love to read!

Ghyll Head Kath Fry Challenge 2022

Saturday evening activities included washing up! Everyone was involved! The evening team challenge involved a raw egg, packing materials and a 10 metre drop – with Team Our Lady’s trying to develop an egg protection system – to stop the egg breaking after a 10 metre fall. Scrambled egg was the result – but a great team effort and a display of teamwork ensured 50 points gained!

On a cold wintry weekend in January, Mr Schofield led an intrepid group of ten year 9 students to the Ghyll Head Outdoor Education Centre in the Lake District. The quest was to participate in the Kath Fry Challenge 2022 and to have a lot of fun and adventure in the process. The Kath Fry Challenge is an annual tournament that pits Manchester schools against each other in a series of outdoor challenges. It is named in tribute to an education activist who fought hard to keep the centre open for Manchester school children when it faced closure in the 1990’s. Team Our Lady’s were joined by teams from Parrs Wood High School and Manchester Grammar School, all with the same aim – to score more points than the other teams and win the Adventure Challenge!

and took to the hills for a day of walking and climbing. You can really appreciate the natural beauty of the Lake District when you see Lake Windermere and Scafell Pike whilst outdoors immersed in the landscape. The group had to climb a mountain, Old Man of Coniston.

This was a full day’s walk with backpacks, taking food, water, waterproofs and safety equipment – and lots of determination. The walk involved lots of rocky ascents up mountain trails, past Goats Tarn where we sheltered beside a big rock against the biting wind to eat their lunch. Harriett and Ramare showed great leadership skills, Michael kept the team’s spirits up, and the summit was reached in very cold and cloudy conditions. On the descent, the group passed the old mine workings, which dated

On the first evening the children bravely ventured out for a night time walk with headlamp torches and maps and had to navigate their way in the dark forest. This is a brilliant test of communication and team work skills and with only the slightest hints of help from Mr Schofield and Mr Hunt our students triumphed.

On the last day the students were allowed to select an activity to enjoy - there was a climbing wall, canoeing, high ropes and abseiling to choose from and our students competently tackled all the challenges that came their way. The team chose to raft 3 canoes together and paddle around an island on Windermere.

Team Our Lady’s included Bethan, Ramare, Harriett, Mariana, Millie, Christopher, Maurycy, Michael, Robert & Orion. Well done everyone!

At the final count Team Our Lady’s were joint highest scorers with Parrs Wood, beating Manchester Grammar School Mr Schofield commented how the team really worked well together, and showed resilience, determination and cooperation skills to support each other – and other teams too.

The following morning they were up early and after breakfast, they wrapped up well

“It’s been a great weekend”, said Mr Hunt, “Everybody was tired at the end because we all worked so hard. I’m proud of the whole team. Everyone overcame challenges together and represented Our Lady’s well”.

THEATRE REVIEW

VAN GOGH ALIVE EXHIBITION

Blood Brothers – Theatre Review So, did y’hear the story of the Johnstone twins? As like each other as two new pins….... In February, thirty of our year 9 were lucky enough to attend a performance of Blood Brothers at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. They all had a great time and a member of the public commented on how impeccably behaved our students were. Blood Brothers was originally a school play created by Liverpool playwright Willy Russell but its popularity led to it being transformed into a musical dramedy that has charmed audiences across the globe and picked up several prestigious awards. Our Lady’s students study Blood Brothers as part of their KS3 English curriculum. It tells the story of twins Mickey and Edward who are separated at birth and though their paths cross

again they ultimately die on the same day. Themes of nature versus nurture, superstition and fate as well as a commentary on social class and growing up are woven throughout the story.

We asked the student to be theatre critics for the night….... The Blood Brothers performance was fantastic. We were really impressed by the action and especially the songs. It was such a wonderful experience to sit in an actual theatre to see the play we had studied in person. Truly a masterpiece. – Aaron Isaacs

Van Gogh Comes to Life! Mrs O’Shea led a group of 40 year 7 students on a trip to The Lowry gallery complex at Media City in Salford. They went to attend the acclaimed Van Gogh Alive exhibition which is an immersive, multi sensory experience that celebrates the work of Dutch impressionist Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh famously was not appreciated during his lifetime but posthumously became one of the most recognised and celebrated artists in the world. Mrs O’Shea and the students were really impressed by the experience, which they overwhelmingly described as ‘amazing’. Participants are invited to sit and watch as the exhibition is brought to them through images and music which makes it an experience like no other and a wonderful way to fully immerse yourself in the sublime talent of Van Gogh.

Bon Appetit! Year 8 students have enjoyed trying typical Spanish food in lessons this half term! They have been learning about Spanish food, such as Spanish omelette, chorizo and olives and couldn’t wait to try it for themselves!

Following on from the Alive experience the class studied the work of Van Gogh in their art lessons and worked on a project that involved them recreating his unique impressionist style of painting and distinctive brush strokes.

Year 9 have recently enjoyed watching a French play, performed by actors from the Onatti Theatre Company. Our students enjoyed a performance of ‘Mon Père Ne Me Comprend Pas’. They enjoyed the play very much, listening to the French language, and understanding lots of words and phrases from French lessons.

SPORTS NEWS

SPORTS NEWS Boys football has had some intense encounters recently with our year 8 team losing 7-6 in extra time in the semi-final of the Catholic Cup and our year 11 team losing 4-3 with the last kick of the ball in the same competition. Our year 7 and 10 teams are still flying the flag though in the Catholic Cup with the 7s having their quarter final clash versus St James in March and our year 10s winning their semi-final 8-3 to progress to the final.

Sports News

The year 8/9 Manchester and County Indoor Athletics Championships at Sportcity took place in December and we thank God that they did as our boys’ team produced some excellent performances to win both competitions. The year 8 and 9 indoor athletics teams were crowned County Champions! An unbelievable achievement with all the athletes finishing in the top three!

It’s been another successful sporting term at Our Lady’s! The year 8 girls basketball team played in their first ever game and wow, they were amazing! The girls beat Co-Op Academy 50-0! Their second game was against Co-Op North and they were triumphant again, winning 26-0! A huge well done and let’s hope the winning streak continues for this team! The year 10 basketball team were so excited to finally play again as they haven’t played a game since they were all in year 8 due to Covid! They had a great match against Co-Op North, winning 10-6.

On a career note we have a number of year 11 boys who have been ‘signed up’ by professional football clubs and it is great to see some of these boys getting the opportunity to fulfil their potential and perhaps realise their childhood dreams.

Our year 7 girls football team had their first ever match in February. The girls played really well. Unfortunately they were beaten by William Hulme 8-0, but they never let their heads go down and tried until the final whistle showing true Our Lady’s spirit! The year 8/9 girls football team had a massive victory in the Manchester Cup against William Hulme beating the team 16-0! The girls did us proud and will now face Wright Robinson in the quarter finals. Good luck!

At the indoor athletics championships our year 7 team came 3rd in the Manchester Championships and 2nd in the County Championships with gold medals from Desmond Lawal and Miracle Ujahchuku in the 60 metres, Fahuz Amusat in the 200 metres, and Israel Somorin in the high jump.

These are Troy Malunda who has been signed by Wigan Athletic and Hermann Daha by Fleetwood Town. We also have five boys who were accepted on a college football academy programme and they are: Drew Redford, Miguel Gikundiro, Sam Adeoye, Sam Megos and Faniel Hagos. Good luck boys! Deo Gratias

FITNESS AND WELLBEING

BOXING CLUB

The Sport of Kings – and Queens! Here at Our Lady’s we have a great reputation for empowering young people through sports and fitness. Our PE department could boast at length of the many trophies and titles that we have been awarded in football, athletics, basketball, netball, badminton and a whole host of other sports including Duke of Edinburgh recognition. Over the last few years we have expanded our repertoire to include boxing, both as an aid to physical fitness and to bolster selfesteem and confidence. Mr Vincent is a lifelong fan of the sport and he runs a boxing club every Friday after school. All Our Lady’s students are welcome to attend regardless of age or experience. No equipment, apart from a PE kit, is required and the sessions are free around 20 – 30 children attend every week.

The boxing club identified a core group of students who had a real passion for the sport so Mr Vincent enrolled them on a program that allowed them to receive some specialist training.

Javeno McClean is an ex Our Lady’s pupil and owner of J7 Community Gym in Blackley. Mrs Gill has previously worked with Javeno and witnessed the amazing rapport he has with young people so she arranged for him to provide personal training sessions for some of our students. Once a week over a 6 week period two separate groups of students, year 8 boys and year 9 girls have attended J7 gym for a 30 minute workout coupled with Javeno’s unique approach to motivating and inspiring young people. Javeno worked with both groups to promote a healthy lifestyle and to build confidence in themselves. He is a real advocate for respect and encouraged the students to make sensible choices. The sessions have been fun and a great success. The students have looked forward to them each week.

Every Thursday the group visit the Fox ABC gym in Failsworth for training with England boxing coaches. The gym has a fantastic reputation locally and nationally and is where Anthony Crolla first started training, he now supports his old club by running a few training sessions. Jim Murphy from the club said, “It’s great that Anthony has committed to taking some sessions and getting involved at the club where he trained as a kid, when a former

INDIAN MUSIC WORKSHOP

SCIENCE LIVE!

Science Live! On Wednesday 26th January, Miss Smith and Miss Massey took a group of 14 year 7 and year 8 students from STEM Club to St Peter’s Roman Catholic High School in Manchester to watch a Flash Bang Show by Dr Frank Muir from The University of Manchester and in association with Astra Zeneca. The show was titled ‘Solids, Liquids and Gases’ and observed by all of St Peter’s year 7s, along with a group from Loretto High School from Chorlton-cum-Hardy. The show consisted of many exciting experiments that explained to the students the changes between a solid, liquid and gas, including colour changing liquids, making foam, exploding balloons, freezing rubber and bananas in dry-ice and shooting rockets into the audience.

Sounds of India We have been very fortunate to welcome renowned local musician Rakesh Joshi into school for a series of Indian music workshops. Rakesh Joshi is the artistic director of Raga Jyoti, an ensemble of 25 talented Indian and European musicians who play traditional and modern Indian classical music. Sounds of India has been a musical passport where Rakesh came into school on Friday afternoons for a series of exciting workshops exploring Indian music. So far, the students have learned how to play the harmonium - a type of keyboard instrument with bellows and two types of drums – Dhol and Madal. The workshops will culminate in a schools’ performance at iconic Manchester music venue ‘Band on the Wall’ and we look forward to sharing details of this with you in a later edition.

The students loved the show and showed their science understanding when they confidently put their hands up to answer a question. The group of students represented Our Lady’s Roman Catholic High School extremely well with comments from other staff members from the other schools commenting on how well they were behaved and how smart they looked. STEM Club is on a Tuesday after school in F1.

Bronnie Rocks! On 16th December 2021, Mrs Gill arranged for an exciting, upcoming new artist called Bronnie to visit school to perform exclusively for our year 8 students.

Bronnie delivered a live performance, following on with a talk on Mental Health, Body Image / LGBTQ+ and a Q&A for the students to participate in.

Bronnie is a Pop/Rock Artist from the North West. She equips a high energy persona with catchy Alt/Punk/ Rock influences. Having previously gained extensive touring experience around the UK, Europe and USA, she has also supported a number of high profile acts including Avril Lavigne & Little Mix.

She was really inspirational and definitely struck a chord with the students, they all loved the event and were up out of their seats dancing and coming together as a year group. It was a great way to end the term!

Having had her own struggles with bullying, body image and mental health, Bronnie was the perfect advocate to deliver a positive message to young people.

School CONFIDENCE CREATIVE Trips

Creative Confidence Our hard-working Makaton and Performance Poetry students have really impressed Kitty from Creative Confidence this term with their outstanding effort and development. We spoke to Kitty for her termly review… Makaton Sing and Sign/Storytelling

This term we decided to take it one step further and used stories, roleplay and presentation techniques using Makaton. The students embraced taking on characters such as an Estate Agent showing prospective buyers around the house whilst signing each room,

Brandon, Salvatore, Destiny and Javae have been on a fabulous journey of poetic discovery. They have been incredibly open, sharing their feelings and emotions on a variety of topics. They showed maturity and respect to each other when relaying stories thus creating some fantastic pieces of poetry. The boys embraced each poetic device from similes, alliteration, senses, rhythm and rhyme and even rap!

This diverse genre allowed them to embrace their own unique sense of style and expression and the students were able to compare the lyrics and similarities in each song. The students’ soaring confidence was so astounding that they took the reins and were given the opportunity to teach what they had learnt to their peers which again was a privilege to be part of.

‘The Love Trilogy’. They were fearless in their expression and pushed themselves out of their comfort zone making each scene come alive. It has been a privilege to watch the boys blossom and I am proud at how they have grown into talented, confident poets. They are a breath of fresh air and there is never a dull moment when they are around. I look forward to seeing what masterpieces they will create next term!

RELIGIOUS LIFE

New House Icons The foyer has been given an uplifting makeover in the form of new artwork. Mrs O’Shea has worked with many of our talented art students to create five painted icons of Our Lady to represent the five house groups we dedicate to her in school. Each year group has a dedicated shrine to Our Lady, for Year 7 it is Our Lady of Knock, Year 8 is Fatima, Year 9 Lourdes, Year 10 Mount Carmel and Year 11 are Walsingham.

Religious Life of the School

Mrs O’Shea researched the locations of each of these shrines and their history; this inspired

Year 9 and year 10 students went on retreat to Savio House in Bollington. The students participated enthusiastically with all of the various activities the centre staff had arranged for them. Staff who led the trip, all agreed that the students were fantastic and represented Our Ladys exceptionally. This activity is a very popular fixture on our spiritual calendar.

Our year 9 and year 10 student chaplains trained as Caritas leaders with Kath Ansley from Salford Diocese. They learnt about the seven aspects of social teaching and how the work of Caritas supports a variety of people across our Diocese. They supported the Advent challenge #lovedbythelord, by writing prayers that were shared on the diocesan website and are currently writing their own spiritual action plan on how we can share the teachings across our school community.

It was a twelve-month project to complete all five icons starting during the winter of 2020, finally completed, and hung in the foyer ready for Christmas 2021. I am sure you will agree they are a beautiful addition to the school building.

Building Update

Student form groups have been leading assemblies on a variety of different themes and gospel values, the children put such a lot of thought into them and delivered their presentations with great confidence. Year 7 students have been attending Mass at St Clare’s with Father Dariusz, it has been a positive experience to return to church and celebrate the Eucharist. This is something that we aim to share across other year groups throughout the year.

They led the Easter liturgies, and supported with fundraising for ‘Grow a Fiver’ and ‘St Joseph’s Penny’ initiatives. Some of our students have shown an interest in being involved in the ‘Faith in Action’ award to show faith, service and reflection, as part of the Salford Youth Ministry in school and the wider community. We look forward to sharing their progress with you.

It’s been an exciting time for the planning team, choosing paint colour for the walls, new carpets and furniture for the classrooms and learning spaces. The builders have been hard at work every day, not an easy task through the wind and rainy months of January and February! The foundations were all laid and we could see the structure growing day by day. You can see how the building has developed this term in our real time images which we are taking every day. We are all so excited in school to see the building develop and to get in there ready for the new school year!

STAFF PROFILE

School WHERE ARE Trips THEY NOW?

Staff Profile: Mrs Thomas Our new School Business Manager, Mrs Thomas, started in January. After a very busy and successful first term at Our Lady’s, she tells us more about herself and her plans for the school…

What are your goals for this year?

Where did you work before you started here? I was the School Business Manager in a primary school in Rochdale. Before this I worked at a secondary school in Oldham.

What were your first impressions of Our Lady’s? From the minute I arrived at Our Lady’s I was overwhelmed with how lovely both staff and students were and how everyone made me feel so welcome. I was very impressed by the school building and all the facilities here.

What is your favourite thing about being a School Business Manager? I enjoy being able to work with many different people and get involved in lots of different projects. Being part of students’ school journey is a very rewarding job!

Two of our ex students are now pursuing careers at Our Lady’s. You may remember Mr Keogh as he loved Drama and starred in many of our great shows. He began his career as a TA and is now a cover supervisor teaching a variety of subjects. Mr Keogh also helps to run our community sports centre in the evening and at the weekends. Miss Worthington left Our Lady’s a few years ago but after obtaining her degree is back with us as a cover supervisor. During her time at Our Lady’s Miss Worthington was Head Girl. Let’s find out a bit more about them.

I would say my main goal for this year has got to be completing the new building which is going to create such a beautiful new working environment for the students and staff of Our Lady’s.

What is your role at Our Ladys? I am the School Business Manager and part of the senior leadership team at Our Lady’s.

Where are they now?

What does a typical day for Mrs Thomas look like? A typical day would usually involve me going to a few meetings. These meetings can be with the senior leadership team to discuss developments for the school, operations meetings which are a good time for me to catch up with teams that I manage. In the middle of the day, I do break and lunch duty which gives me the chance to get out of the office and chat to the students. I answer my emails throughout the day to deal with anything that needs my attention.

Favourite film or TV show? I love comedies! My favourite TV show would have to be Friends.

Favourite food? Italian.

Where in the world would you most like to visit? I have always wanted to visit Australia, I am hoping that one day we will be lucky enough to go.

In History I loved learning all about Nazi Germany, in particular hearing about the groups that emerged to oppose the Nazis such as the White Rose group. It was

What is your greatest achievement to date? Getting this job! I was so overwhelmed and happy when I was told after my interview that they would like me to come and work for Our Lady’s.

Best bit of advice for students at Our Lady’s? Work as hard as possible at school to ensure that it opens lots of doors for your future. The most important thing to do is to try your best and believe in yourself.

If you weren’t a School Business Manager what would you be doing? Before I was a business manager I was a college lecturer in hair, beauty and functional skills, I think I would be still doing that.

When I was in school my favourite lessons were English and History, although there weren’t many lessons that I didn’t enjoy. In English I loved reading and learning about books which reflected issues of that specific time - such as To Kill a Mockingbird which portrays issues relating to race and gender in 1930s Alabama.

What are your hobbies outside of school? I have two children who have very busy social lives so I spend a lot of time taking them places. We have a caravan and spend most of our weekends there going for walks and in the swimming pool. I enjoy going out with my husband and friends and try to squeeze in the gym if I can!

What were your favourite subjects at school and why?

What were your favourite subjects at school and why? This is a difficult question, all of my subjects at school were enjoyable and I had some of the best teachers! One of my favourites was RE, I was taught by Mrs Buckley and the lessons were always fun and she made us laugh. Another favourite was psychology with Mrs Robson and Drama with Mr Banham.

learning about Germany which has inspired me to visit Berlin many times since leaving school.

Where are you now? In Summer 2021 I graduated from The University of Manchester with a BA in English Literature. I am now working at Our Lady’s as a Cover Supervisor.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

If you were on a deserted island what 3 things would you bring and why? If I was on a deserted island I would bring a copy of a really good book (preferably a long one) to keep myself entertained; I would bring my Chilly’s water bottle (that comes everywhere with me) to make sure that I stay hydrated; I would also bring a notebook & pen to write all about the island, so I could tell my friends about it in detail when somebody finally rescued me!

In 5 years time I will be an English Teacher. I will be travelling a lot more and will have hopefully visited India.

Where are you now? I have worked at Our Lady’s for three years, before this year I was a teaching assistant working with the amazing department upstairs, now I am part of the cover team. I have really enjoyed both roles at Our Lady’s and imagine I’m not going anywhere yet!

If you were on a deserted island what 3 things would you bring and why? A pan to gather water, a fishing net and a flint and steel to start a fire, I’m not too sure I would last very long!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In five years time, I would like to have completed my degree and qualified to teach. Every day is different at Our Lady’s which is why I enjoy working here.
