ridham’s Auctions and Appraisals is very pleased to offer our our fall International Fine & Decorative Arts auction for 2021; 350 lots of well curated art, silver, porcelains, bronzes along with many rare & unusual objects. Along with over 80 works of fine art, Pridham’s Auctions & Appraisals is pleased to include a selection of fine inventory items from one of Canada’s most highly esteemed antique shops - DONOHUE & BOUSQUET, who after 50 years of continuous business in Ottawa as silver specialists and long-time members of the Canadian Antique Dealers Association (CADA), are closing their doors. Since 1971, Donohue & Bousquet have been dealing in fine 17th-20th century silver & accessories, and count among their lengthy list of notable clients several Prime Ministers of Canada, high ranking Members of Parliament, Supreme Court Justices, Foreign Service Ambassadors, as well as a host of prominent and historically significant Ottawa families. Other inclusions will be19th and 20th century bronzes, a monumental Royal Vienna porcelain vase, Loetz, Lalique, Tiffany, Fabergé, a good selection of Asian porcelains and paintings. Fine furniture will include a fine Canadian Eastern Seaboard mahogany sideboard, an Egyptian Revival bookcase, fine mid century modern. Catalogue note: Pridham’s is pleased to offer an extensive collection of works by iconic Canadian artist Peleg Franklin Brownell RCA, OSA (18571946). Brownell began his studies in Boston at Tufts School of the Museum of Fine arts and then at the Académie Julian in Paris in the later part of the 19th century. There he met fellow ex-pat William Brymner. Brownell eventually moved to Ottawa in 1886, taking up the position of Head Master of the Ottawa School of Art until 1900, subsequently becoming the Head Master of the Women’s Art Association in Ottawa. Elected as a Member of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1885, and Ontario Society of Artists in 1899. In 1907, he became a founding member of the Canadian Art Club in Toronto where he befriended the likes of Maurice Cullen and James Wilson Morrice. As a result, his palette began to soften, leaning strongly towards an impressionistic style. This style is evident in many of the examples we are pleased to offer within this sale.

7 Canadian Eastern Seaboard Mahogany Sideboard

A very good & important early 19th century Canadian Eastern Seaboard sideboard in mahogany, the top featuring a superstructure fitted with three drawers overtop a base fitted with a central drawer over carved spandrels and flanked on either side by a large drawer, all with cock-beaded detail, original locks & replaced brass back-plates with bail handles, raised overall on opposing rope-carved front supports with reeded knees, together with plain rear supports in back. Although unsigned this very fine piece of early 19th century cabinetry demonstrates several key design elements strongly associated with the workshop of noted Saint John New Brunswick cabinetmaker, Thomas Nisbet (1777-1850). That being said, similar design elements can also be found on examples by one other highly celebrated New Brunswick cabinetmaker, Alexander Lawrence (1788-1843) who was perhaps Nesbit’s closest contemporary both in terms of design & quality, but who very seldom if ever signed his work. It is also perhaps worth mentioning that although the concept of incorporating the 3 drawer superstructure appears atypical in comparison to most known examples of either man’s work, it is most definitely of Scottish influence which would be consistent with the early training that both the aforementioned Scottish-born cabinetmakers would have received. Therefore in observance of these determinations, we can comfortably attribute this sideboard with some degree of certainty to one of these two fine & important Canadian cabinetmakers workshops. Provenance: By direct descent from a New Brunswick family estate. Dimensions, 45” high x 69” wide x 23” deep.

Catalogue note: Bernard Édouard Swebach learned to paint from his father, Jacques-François-Joseph Swebach called Desfontaines. His father was known for painting horses and military scenes, including important events from Napoléon’s military campaigns. Bernard Édouard was as talented, entering the École des Beaux-Arts at the young age of fourteen. He is known for his paintings the horses of King Louis XVIII, he passed away in the town of Versailles, at 84 Rue Royale, close to the Palace.

This work is accompanied by a letter dated 1967 from Dominion Gallery stating that the work was acquired by Dr. Max Stern directly from the artist.

Catalogue note: Henrietta Mable May worked with and organized important Canadian art groups including the Art Association of Montreal, The Beaver Hall Group & the Canadian Group of Painters. The Canadian War Museum, The National Gallery of Canada, Le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, Le Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec, and the Vancouver Art Gallery all hold her works. Sometimes referred to as the Emily Carr of Montreal due to her outstanding landscape paintings, Henrietta May was influenced by the French Impressionists, as well as the Group of Seven. The painting in this lot is an early example and demonstrates her landscape prowess, clearly influenced by the Group of Seven. The unique verso work offers a broader creative perspective showing rushing rapids under a bridge.

Icart’s depictions of women were mostly sensual, often erotic, but also always humorous and full of hinted or direct sexuality. In his pictures, beautiful courtesans frolicked on thick pillows with facial expressions full of passion, dismay or surprise.

8. Unless exempted by law, the buyer must pay applicable taxes on the total purchase price. The buyer’s premium is added before the applicable taxes. 9. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay HST on the total purchase price including the buyer’s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of Canada. For items shipped out of the province, the buyer is required to PAY TAXES as per their provincial tax status, whether it is HST, GST and PST. Including for Quebec buyers, there is GST and QST. | À moins d’être exempté par la loi, l’acheteur est tenu de payer la TVH sur le prix d’achat total, y compris la prime de l’acheteur. Pour les acheteurs internationaux, les taxes ne sont pas applicables lorsque les achats sont expédiés hors du Canada. 10. The Auctioneer has the right to withdraw or add to the items as listed in any printed catalogue or listing or promoted on the internet. | Pridham’s a le droit de retirer ou d’ajouter des items sur une liste ou dans un catalogue imprimé, ou annoncé sur l’internet.

11. The Auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot from the sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice. | L’Encanteur se réserve le droit de retirer tout lot de la vente, à n’importe quel moment, de diviser un ou plusieurs lots, et ce sans avis.

12. The Auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid may not be recognized. | Pridham’s a le droit de refuser toute offre et d’avancer l’appel d’offres à son entière discrétion. Il se réserve le droit de ne pas accepter et de refuser toute offre. 13. When the Auctioneer says “SOLD” it is a contractual agreement between the Auctioneer and the buyer. All auctions are also audiorecorded. | Lorsque l’Encanteur dit “VENDU” cela est tout comme un contrat entre l’acheteur et l’Encanteur. Les encans sont aussi enregistrés par audio.

14. The highest bidder accepted by the Auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders, the Auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. The Auctioneer’s decision in all cases is final. | Le soumissionnaire le plus offrant accepté par Pridham’s pour tout lot sera l’acheteur, et cet acheteur assumera sans délai tous les risques et responsabilités du lot et devra se conformer aux autres Conditions de vente applicables. 15. The buyer shall pay an item in full and to the satisfaction of the Auctioneer; failing to do so may result in the cancellation of the sale, with or without re-offering the item for sale. | L’acheteur doit payer un item au complet et à la satisfaction de Pridham’s, à défaut de quoi, Pridham’s peut annuler la vente, avec ou sans offrir de nouveau l’article à vendre.

16. Payments have to be made in full by Visa, MasterCard (over the telephone) or e-transfer within 5 days after receiving their final invoice from Pridham’s (or Live Auctioneers). | Les paiements doivent être faits par Visa, MasterCard (par téléphone) ou e-Interac, 5 jours après avoir reçu une facture finale Pridham’s (ou Live Auctioneers).

17. Pridham’s is not responsible for any damages or injuries under any circumstances. | Pridham’s n’est pas responsable pour aucun dommage ou blessure et ce, en aucun cas.

18. If you are not able to pick-up your purchase at 2615 Lancaster Road, Ottawa, Pridham’s can deliver (smalls only, for free) your unpacked paid purchases, at the buyer’s risk to UPS. Pridham’s will share your information, not your credit card number, with UPS. Once your purchase is with UPS, you will liaise directly with them for packing, insuring, shipping, and payment. Please take note that UPS charges are commensurate with the amount of packing required, size, weight, destination, etc and NOT with the hammer price. Please ask for a shipping quote before the auction, if you are concerned, not after you buy an item. Sales will not be cancelled if shipping is too expensive. For larger items (ex. furniture), please call us (1-877-533-5877) to discuss a pick-up schedule (within 5 business days) or carrier shipping. A list of suggested shippers is available. We can not store furniture for weeks, please have a plan of action before buying large pieces, or a storage fee may apply. | Si vous n’êtes pas en mesure de ramasser vos achats le jour de la vente, Pridham’s peut les livrer les petits objets (seulement, gratuitement) non-emballés au risque de l’acheteur chez UPS, lorsque convenable pour Pridham’s. 19. For buyers who abandon their prepared and packed purchase at UPS for whatever reason, a charge of CAN $45 will be applied to their credit card by Pridham’s. Nancy packs and spends time preparing your purchase, please follow through with your shipping and these Terms and Conditions. | Si vous abandonnez un achat préparé et emballé par UPS pour quelconque raison, une charge de 45$ CAN sera appliquée sur votre carte de crédit par Pridham’s. 20. The Auctioneer acts solely as agent for the seller and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles in the sale. Without limitation, the buyer understands that any item bought may be affected by the provisions of the Cultural Property Export Act. | L’Encanteur est un agent seulement pour le client et ne fait aucunes représentations en ce qui concerne l’attribution, le titre ou restriction affectant les articles dans une vente. 21. DISCLAIMER: Ivory, tortoise shell and other “animal” items are restricted from export out of Canada due to protection under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Pridham’s will not provide shipping or CITES application services.

The successful buyer has to pick-up the item in person. Shall the buyer decide to take the item across a border after picking it up, the buyer takes full responsibility for obtaining proper exporting and importing documents from both countries: EXPORT IS AT THE BUYER’S RISK. Pridham’s supports the protection of our fauna and flora. | AVERTISSEMENT: L’ivoire, la coquille de tortue et d’autres objets de source animale ont un interdit d’exportation à l’extérieur du Canada en raison de la protection prévue par la Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d’extinction (CITES). Pridham’s n’offre pas de service d’expédition ni de service d’application pour CITES. L’acheteur doit ramasser l’article en personne.
