Bold Bridal Style for the

MODERN BRIDES

Today’s brides are reshaping the bridal style rulebook, confidently choosing gowns with daring necklines, sculpted silhouettes, and quietly sensual details. But is embracing sexiness still considered taboo—or simply a powerful way to express self-assurance and individuality?

Being Daring and Sexy on Your Wedding Day: When It’s Worth Breaking the “Rules”

For decades, wedding gowns were defined by modesty, restraint, and ethereal romance. But times have changed. Brides today are boldly reclaiming what “sexy” means in the bridal world—stepping out in curveskimming silhouettes, statement details, and design elements that celebrate the body rather than hide it.

Yet the question remains: where does daring end and distasteful begin? And when is breaking the so-called taboo a liberating choice?

Dando London, Bella www.dandolondon.com

A New Vision for the Modern Bride

Classic ballgowns will always have their place, but contemporary bridal design embraces far more diversity. Designers are celebrating brides who want to look confident, glamorous, and unapologetically themselves. And “sexy” doesn’t have to shout—sometimes it’s a whisper. It might be a barely-there illusion panel, a deep V that glides rather than plunges, or a thigh slit that adds drama without dominating the look.

To some, these touches may still feel unconventional for a wedding ceremony. But modern weddings are personal, expressive celebrations—and if a bride feels at her best in a gown that pushes tradition, that authenticity is what matters.

Defining Your Kind of Sexy

Being daring doesn’t mean sacrificing refinement. The key is striking a balance between confidence and elegance—choosing elements that enhance your personality rather than overshadow it.

Think about what makes you feel beautiful:

• A backless gown that feels both dramatic and graceful

• Sheer overlays that suggest rather than reveal

• Cut-outs that offer shape, structure, and subtle seduction

Fabric, too, plays a role. Bias-cut satin, crepe, and liquid silk effortlessly skim the body for a naturally flattering finish. Layered lace can add softness and intrigue, revealing glimpses of skin without giving too much away. The right fabric turns a bold detail from risqué into effortlessly chic.

When Daring Meets Tradition

Not every loved one—or venue—will appreciate a gown that leans into sensuality. A traditional religious ceremony or family expectations may mean you feel the need to pare things back. If so, think about versatility: a detachable overskirt, cape, or topper lets you keep things classic for the ceremony, before revealing a more daring look later in the day.

Letting Go of Outdated Bridal Norms

Your wedding day is a celebration of your love and your identity. “Sexy” is entirely subjective—what feels daring to one bride may feel understated to another. If you’re drawn to a gown that edges beyond tradition, embrace it wholeheartedly. Opting for something bold isn’t about shock value; it’s about wearing a dress that expresses your story in the most authentic way.

The truth? Sexy isn’t a taboo—it’s a choice. And if that choice makes you feel empowered, radiant, and completely yourself, then it’s exactly right for your wedding day.

WEDDING INSPIRATION

SOFT LIGHT

Bathed in natural light and layered with delicate florals, muted tones and classic styling, this orangery wedding shoot offers inspiring ideas for couples dreaming of a soft, traditional aesthetic with a modern, elegant edge

Images: Eva Tarnok Photography, 07544 992558, www.evatarnok.com.

As editors, we’re always drawn to wedding inspiration that feels timeless yet fresh –styling that celebrates light, space and thoughtful detail rather than excess. This beautifully curated shoot, set within one of London’s most elegant orangery-style venues, is a masterclass in how to achieve a soft, classical and traditionally romantic wedding aesthetic using pale tones, refined florals and considered textures.

A LightFilled Setting

Orangeries, glasshouses and conservatories remain enduring favourites for couples who want their day to feel uplifting and graceful. Flooded with natural daylight, these spaces act as a blank canvas, allowing every carefully chosen detail to shine. For this shoot, the historic Orangery in Holland Park provided an exquisite backdrop, combining the grandeur of a country house with the intimacy of a hidden garden retreat. High ceilings, ornate detailing and expansive windows created an atmosphere that felt both luxurious and serene, perfectly suited to a refined wedding style rooted in tradition.

The entire concept was thoughtfully planned and styled by Katie Stocks of The Events Designers, whose signature approach is rooted in elegance and restraint. Her vision centred on a palette of soft creams, gentle greys, blush hues and warm metallics – a combination that instantly evokes romance while remaining understated and refined. Capturing it all through a fine-art lens was Eva Tarnok, whose photography beautifully reflects the light, softness and emotion woven throughout the shoot.

Soft Florals Inspired by the Garden

Florals played a starring role, but always with a light touch. Blue Sky Flowers created an abundant yet natural installation that appeared to grow effortlessly within the space. Using a blend of English garden flowers and foliage, the arrangements featured creamy roses, blush tones and textured stems, designed to echo the surrounding parkland just beyond the glass.

Cascading greenery and delicately placed blooms softened the architectural lines of the venue and brought an organic sense of movement overhead. For couples seeking a pastel look, this shoot is a reminder that limiting your colour palette and focusing on texture, shape and seasonality can be far more impactful than introducing strong colour contrasts.

Elegant Tablescapes with Subtle Detail

The tablescape continued the theme of relaxed luxury. A rustic farmhouse table was paired with clear ghost chairs, allowing the flowers and linens to remain the focal point without visual clutter. Soft grey silk runners flowed down the table, layered with warm gold and bronze candlesticks that created a gentle, flattering glow as daylight faded into candlelight.

Crystal glassware and refined tableware completed the look, proving that classic pieces, when thoughtfully styled, never date. For couples planning their own celebration, mixing rustic elements with elegant finishes is an effective way to balance tradition with modernity while keeping the overall aesthetic light and inviting.

Classic, Roman

Bridal styling was equally timeless. The first gown, a soft A-line design with delicate lace textures and subtle handbeading, embodied effortless romance. Fine straps and an illusion back added interest without overwhelming the silhouette.

A second look introduced a more formal, classic feel – a beautifully structured gown adorned with intricate lace and embellishment, perfect for a traditional ceremony or evening celebration.

Both looks were paired with rose-gold heels featuring delicate floral detailing, adding a whimsical yet luxurious finishing touch. Hair and make-up were kept soft and natural, enhancing rather than disguising, which is key to achieving a bridal look that feels elegant now and in years to come.

Stationery and Finishing Touches

Stationery and paper goods often set the tone for a wedding long before the day itself, and this shoot treated them

as an integral part of the overall design. Elmo Paper Stories created a bespoke suite featuring calligraphy, love notes, poems and velvet vow books, all in muted, romantic tones.

These tactile details reinforced the sense of intimacy and thoughtfulness that ran through the shoot and serve as a reminder that stationery can be both functional and deeply personal.

From flowing drapery and lanterns to understated décor and beautifully crafted rings, every supplier contributed to a cohesive vision rooted in softness, tradition and light.

The key takeaway for couples? Choose a harmonious palette, prioritise natural light, invest in texture and craftsmanship, and allow your venue to guide your styling choices. This shoot proves that a pastel, classical wedding doesn’t need to feel formal or predictable. With careful planning and a focus on quality over quantity, it can feel airy, romantic and utterly unforgettable.

Win Your Wedding

It really could happen to you! In this edition we meet Justine and Craig, the couple who won our 2024 Dream Wedding competition. Here’s how they met, where he proposed... and what happened next!

Photography: Coops Photography, 07799 613101, www.coopsphotography.co.uk.

When Justine Kiernan entered UKbride’s Win a Dream Wedding

Worth up to £25,000 competition, she did it on a whim.

She had seen it on Facebook, thought “you never know”, and filled in the form. Craig, her fiancé, was unconvinced. “He went, ‘Oh come on, we’re never going to win that,’” Justine laughs. She was delighted to prove him wrong.

Justine, now Justine Emmery, grew up in Rainham, while Craig grew up in Dagenham. They met on Tinder in 2022 and quickly became really

inseparable. Craig proposed on Christmas Day 2023, and the glow of being engaged soon turned into the practicalities of planning.

The win was confirmed in February 2024, right as the couple were preparing to travel to Craig’s brother’s wedding in Scotland.

“While we were driving up, I got the email with all the details and all the prizes on,” Justine says. At the time, they had secured the essentials: a ceremony at Our Lady of La Salette in Rainham, and a reception at Crondon Park in Stock, Essex. Winning shifted the planning process.

It gave the couple a clearer framework and took away much of the financial guesswork.

Justine describes herself as a planner who likes knowing exactly what is happening and when. “I didn’t really have too many meltdowns.”

Craig’s attitude helped too. “Just let me know where you want me and when you want me,” he told her, happy to support rather than steer.

It suited their dynamic: Justine works for an electrical wholesaler, Craig is an electrician, and they are used to being a practical team.

Justine found her dress at Wed2B in Chelmsford and speaks warmly about the experience. Their cake, from Razmatazz Cakes, looked exactly as they had imagined and tasted as good as it looked. They chose Shropshire Petals for confetti and cannons, and that detail became one of the most joyful moments of the day. Justine’s dad loved it so much he bought extra cannons, leaving confetti left over for friends to borrow.

Wedding morning arrived on 10 October and it started early. Eight women were getting ready together, including bridesmaids and Justine’s mum, and hair and makeup began around half past six. “My day literally started by my friend laying on top of me,” Justine laughs. “Get up, you get married today!” Craig had barely slept and still managed a full English at a café before heading to the church to greet guests.

Justine stayed at Crondon Park the night before, with the bridal suite included in the package, which

mattered when you have a roomful of people getting ready. Another personal highlight was the transport. Justine grew up around classic cars and her dad is part of a Corvette club. For the wedding, the club created a procession of classic cars.

Justine and her dad arrived in a Dodge Royale that had been bought only a week before the wedding. “It was stunning,” she says.

Despite the excitement, both bride and groom felt nerves before the ceremony. After months of planning, there is always the fear something will go wrong. Yet, as Justine tells it, the moment she reached the altar the anxiety fell away. “As soon as I met him at the altar, we both instantly felt calm,” she says. The ceremony was led by Father Kris, whom she describes as warm and funny. Craig is not Catholic, but Justine is, and they chose a full mass because it mattered to her.

They added their own touches. Craig chose Jerusalem as the exit hymn,

proudly claiming it as both hymn and football anthem, and it made guests smile. Afterwards, the couple did something they would recommend to anyone: they formed a receiving line outside the church. They had been warned how quickly the day would pass and how easily you can be pulled in different directions, so greeting everyone there meant they could say hello and thank you before the next part began.

At Crondon Park there were welcome drinks and canapés while the couple took photographs. Justine laughs that you can plan every detail of a wedding, then experience it in quick flashes, often without eating as much as you expect.

One of Justine’s most moving moments came during the confetti line. Her nana, her only living grandparent, has dementia and is quite unwell, and Justine did not know whether she would manage to attend. As the couple stepped into the confetti moment, Justine looked up

and saw her nana sitting there, brought by her carer so she could spend time with them. “It was probably one of my favourite moments of the day,” she says.

After the meal, the wedding shifted straight into party mode. Their singer, Barney, was a happy accident: the couple had discovered him performing in a small pub in Norfolk and were so impressed that Craig asked, on the spot, whether he did weddings. He played sets through the evening, with the first dance in between. Justine and Craig chose Lost Without You by Tim Gallagher, suggested by Craig’s best man, and it felt personal rather than predictable.

Later came a father and daughter dance that surprised Justine with how emotional it made everyone. She and her dad danced to Post Malone’s Yours, singing to each other and playing around as they always have. When it ended, they turned to see guests in tears. It was a reminder, Justine says, that the most powerful moments are often the simplest.

To keep the party going, they paid for the venue to extend its licence by an extra hour, celebrating until one in the morning rather than midnight. They eventually got to bed at about three, running on adrenaline and the glow of a day that had lived up to the build up.

Looking back, Justine believes the prize made planning easier, but the heart of the day was always the people. With around 100 guests during the day and another 50 to 60 in the evening, including relatives travelling from Ireland, the atmosphere felt joyful, loud and full of warmth. Her dad summed it up perfectly: “You had an Irish wedding, just in England.” Another guest told her, “Won’t see another wedding like that for 40, 50 years.”

“All we did was book a place and put everyone together in the same room,” Justine says. “That was very much the people that made it.”

Bella Sposa

Bridal

A BRIDAL BRAND REBORN IN LONDON, WITH ROOTS IN UKRAINE. We create timeless wedding gowns that celebrate femininity, craftsmanship, and quiet elegance — made for brides who value meaning as much as beauty.

bella_sposa_bridal

bella_sposa_bridal

This cool retro wedding styled shoot is a joyful reminder that weddings can be expressive, playful and deeply personal without losing any sense of romance.

Led by Rosie from A Whole Lot of Rosie, whose creative vision shaped the concept from the very beginning, the shoot brings together a talented collective of wedding suppliers to celebrate colour, music and individuality. Rooted in personality and collaboration, it offers rich inspiration for couples who want their wedding to feel like an extension of who they are rather than a traditional template.

Soul and Style

At the heart of this shoot is a strong and personal creative starting point. The inspiration grew from the bride’s love of iconic musicians, reflected in striking tattoos that subtly guided the narrative and mood. This is a perfect example of how personal details can inform a wedding aesthetic in a way that feels authentic rather than themed. By drawing on music culture and the free spirited energy of the 1960s and 70s, the styling feels nostalgic yet confidently modern.

The colour palette is central to the story. Warm oranges, golden yellows and soft peach tones appear throughout the shoot, creating a sense of cohesion and joy. For couples keen to achieve a similar look, selecting a focused palette and committing to it across every element can be transformative.

When colour flows seamlessly from fashion to florals and styling, the overall effect feels immersive and considered.

A Bride With Character

The bridal look strikes a beautiful balance between vintage influence and contemporary design. A handmade gown with detachable puff sleeves, a statement bow and fluid lines feels romantic, expressive and wearable. It shows that referencing the past does not mean dressing up. Instead, thoughtful design choices allow the bride’s personality to shine through.

Accessories play an important supporting role. Floral crowns, statement earrings and headpieces created from pre loved materials add texture and individuality while reinforcing the relaxed, creative spirit of the shoot. Hair and makeup are kept soft and glowing, using warm tones that complement the palette rather than overpower it. The result is a bridal look that feels confident, natural and effortlessly stylish.

A Groom With Flair

The groom’s styling is equally expressive. A deep navy suit paired with a rich orange waistcoat and patterned tie demonstrates how colour can elevate menswear without losing a sense of timeless tailoring. For couples drawn to a retro inspired aesthetic, this is an accessible way to inject personality and visual interest. Bold choices like these also photograph beautifully too.

Venue and Atmosphere

Spaces with texture, history and charm lend themselves naturally to creative concepts and often require less decoration to feel complete. The ceremony setting is elevated with playful details such as a bespoke banner and shimmering disco balls.

These additions inject energy and movement, instantly setting the tone for a celebration that does not take itself too seriously. Couples planning their own wedding can take note of how just a few well chosen statement elements can transform a space and create a memorable first impression.

Table Styling With Personality

The table styling is rich with thoughtful detail. Embroidered linens, monogrammed bows, personalised sweets and hand painted glassware layer charm and creativity without feeling overworked.

Floral arrangements featuring sunflowers and chrysanthemums bring vibrant colour and a sense of abundance, echoing the joyful palette used throughout the day.

For couples recreating this look, cohesion is key. Mixing bespoke items with carefully chosen styling pieces allows personality to shine while keeping the overall design balanced. Personalisation does not need to be

extravagant to be effective. Repeating small details across the table setting can be just as impactful.

Fun and Unexpected Moments

What makes this styled shoot so successful is the clarity of vision and the collaborative spirit behind it. With Rosie from A Whole Lot of Rosie leading the creative direction, every contributor worked towards a shared aesthetic that feels cohesive and intentional.

It proves that when couples trust their instincts and surround themselves with passionate suppliers, the result is a wedding that feels stylish, memorable and unmistakably their own

For couples inspired by this look, start with what you love. Music, colour, shared passions or meaningful details can form the foundation of your wedding style.

A Belvoir Wedding

This month we celebrate the marriage of Lady Violet Manners and Viscount William Garnock at the bride’s family home, Belvoir Castle

Photography: David Wheeler, 07931 974123, www.davidwheelerphotography.co.uk.

“I grew up at Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, where my family have lived for centuries, so Belvoir has always been home,” says Lady Violet Manners, reflecting on her recent wedding to Viscount William Garnock at her family’s ancestral home.”

“William was born and raised in Fife, where his family’s estate is located.”

“We both had our years living away — me in London, and him between Scotland and America — but it was through his sister and brother-in-law that our paths finally crossed in Fife.”

“We met in December 2023 at William’s family home in Fife. His sister Charlotte and her husband Jaime had invited me at the last minute for New Year, and when I arrived it happened to be William’s birthday.”

“We were seated next to each other at dinner and clicked immediately. We discovered a shared love of India, America, adventure and history.”

“That first evening I had a very quiet but strong feeling that I was going to marry him one day.”

“By the time he dropped me at the station on New Year’s Day, we both knew it was very real!”

“William proposed in July 2024 in Colorado. He had already asked both my parents for their blessing, which meant the world to me.”

“He took me out to the Great Plains near Jefferson with the Rockies in the distance.”

“Under that vast American sky, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was just the two of us, which made it even more special. The ring is a timeless diamond set in platinum — very classic,

very me — and I was completely taken by surprise when he pulled it out.”

“The venue was never in doubt. Belvoir Castle, where I grew up, was the only choice. It holds so much history for my family and me, and it felt right to gather everyone there.”

“I worked with Philippa Lepley to design my wedding dress from scratch, taking inspiration from my great-grandmother the Duchess of Argyll’s gown from the 1920s, the ruffles I have always loved from Elizabethan styles, and the starry night when William and I first kissed.”

“The embroidery was filled with personal touches — suns, moons, myrtle leaves from the Rutland tiara, and our initials stitched in. I wore the Rutland family tiara, which hadn’t been worn in 30 years, alongside Tiffany pearl and diamond earrings and Roger Vivier shoes.”

“In the evening I changed into a 1940s satin gown from Jane Bourvis with pearl buttons from Jaipur, and later still into a second-hand Balmain dress as a nod to my

mum, who has always instilled in me a love for vintage designer finds.”

“William wore his family’s Lindsay tartan kilt made by Stewart Christie in Edinburgh with a green tweed jacket for the day, then changed into a Prince Charlie velvet doublet for the evening.”

“Our photographer was David Wheeler, who captured everything so beautifully and naturally. Our wedding video has just arrived too, and watching it back was incredibly emotional.”

“Walking down the aisle in the church with my father was emotional — and actually leaving the church was too. Wearing the tiara for the first time in 30 years was surreal.”

“The speeches were a highlight, full of love and laughter, and the atmosphere of pure joy throughout the day is something I’ll always carry with me.”

“I would like to thank the Belvoir Castle team, who are like family to me — and of course my parents, who have supported me in every way.”

QUESTIONS TO ASK

THE BRIDAL SHOP

How many fittings will I have?

Usually you’ll have an initial fitting, then a further one after the changes have been done. The average amount of fittings is two to three. Because of the amount of fittings, it’s worth looking for dresses well in advance of the wedding day.

What should Ibring with me?

You want to feel confident when you try on dresses. Some bridal shops will have strapless bras, heels and jewellery for you to try on with your dress but some may not. Make sure to bring an open mind too! You may surprise yourself with the dress you finally decide on.

Can Ibring my mum and friends?

It’s always worth asking this question. Of course you want your friends and family there with you on the day, but some bridal shops may not have the space for you to do this.

If you have a busy lifestyle, it might also be worth asking if they do late evening fittings. It’s less busy at this time so you’ll be able to bring friends.

What experience do you have?

If the store is in the Retail Bridal Association, it means the business has been running for more than five years and its standards are checked annually. Check if the seamstress is qualified. Make sure you’re visiting a store with good credentials.

What is included in the price?

When you buy a wedding dress, you try on the sizes they have in store. They then order that dress closest to your size and alter it to fit. Make sure you find out how much the alteration will cost; some bridal shops include alterations in the price but watch out for these additional costs.

Can Ibring along a camera?

A lot of bridal shops surprisingly don’t allow this, but it’s important you ask so you can look over the pictures later and compare them to other styles you liked in different stores. If they don’t allow you to bring a camera or take photos, take a note of the name of the designer and the dress name or number so you can look the style up later online and save them that way.

OLD, NEW, BORROWED AND BLUE

The rhyme ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ offers a beautifully traditional way to style a wedding look. Something old might be heirloom lace stitched into a contemporary gown. Something new could be architectural tailoring, fresh fabric or a statement veil. Something borrowed is often jewellery from a beloved relative, worn close to the heart. Finally, something blue appears subtly: a sapphire shoe sole, pale embroidery or a hidden ribbon. Together, these thoughtful details create a bridal outfit rich in meaning, individuality and timeless elegance that feels deeply personal yet effortlessly refined today.

A CLASSIC SILHOUETTE

Choosing the Perfect Wedding Dress for Your Dream Wedding

When planning a wedding in a warm, sunny location, selecting the right dress is key to looking radiant and feeling comfortable. In hot climates, consider lightweight, breathable fabrics like chiffon, organza, or crepe that allow air to flow and help keep you cool. Avoid heavier materials like satin or brocade, which can feel stifling in the heat.

Silhouettes are another important consideration. Slim, flowing styles, like A-line or sheath dressesoffer a breezy elegance, while voluminous ball gowns might trap heat and feel heavy over the day.

If you’re keen on a classic bridal look, consider a dress with layers of airy tulle or opt for detachable skirts or overskirts to switch up your look while staying cool.

Details matter too; intricate beading and dense lace can add weight, so look for lighter embellishments or simple lacework. Open backs, off-the-shoulder styles, or strapless dresses are perfect choices, adding a touch of glamour while keeping your look light and airy. Finally, think about practicalities. A shorter dress, like a chic mini or midi length, is playful and ideal for beach or garden settings. And don’t forget to plan for sun protection: a wide-brimmed hat, parasol, or lightweight shawl can add a stylish touch while shielding you from the sun. With these tips, you’ll be ready to shine, comfortably, in your dream dress, no matter how warm the weather.

SPRING & SUMMER 2026 SHOES

FRESH BRIDAL STYLE

From paredback silhouettes to sustainable craftsmanship, British wedding dress trends for 2026 embrace modern elegance with timeless appeal. We explore the key looks shaping bridal fashion, from statement sleeves to versatile designs made for today’s stylish bride

British wedding dress trends for 2026 celebrate refined elegance with a distinctly modern outlook, blending heritage craftsmanship with contemporary design. Minimalism leads the way, with clean silhouettes, fluid draping and luxurious fabrics such as silk, satin and crepe creating effortlessly chic gowns. These pared-back styles allow cut and construction to shine, offering timeless appeal that feels quietly confident rather than showy. Sleeves continue to play a starring role, from soft puffed shoulders to long, sheer designs finished with delicate buttons. Off-the-shoulder necklines are also returning, lending a romantic, slightly nostalgic feel while still looking fresh and fashion-forward. Structured bodices paired with flowing skirts strike a flattering balance between form and movement.

Sustainability is no longer a niche trend but a central consideration.

British designers are increasingly using ecoconscious fabrics, deadstock lace and responsibly sourced silks, while reworked vintage dresses offer individuality with a lighter environmental footprint.

www.kindlingbridal.com

Brides are choosing gowns with longevity in mind, favouring quality pieces that can be altered or restyled after the day.

Versatility is another key theme for 2026. Detachable overskirts, capes and removable sleeves allow brides to transform their look from ceremony to celebration with ease. The overall mood is polished yet relaxed, designed for modern British brides who value style, substance and understated glamour on their wedding day, from city ceremonies to countryside celebrations.

Choosing wedding shoes is about balancing elegance with comfort. Luxurious materials, considered heel height and suitability for the venue all matter. The best pair reflects personal style, lasts all day and allows you to walk confidently from aisle to dancefloor.

GARTER

WEDDING DAY

TRADITION

Wedding garters are a charming bridal tradition with roots in good luck and celebration. Traditionally worn on the right leg, the garter was historically removed by the groom and tossed to guests during the reception, symbolising fortune and future happiness. Today, many brides choose to keep the moment more discreet or wear a second garter for tradition only. When selecting a garter, comfort is essential, as it’s worn throughout the day. Look for soft lace, silk or satin with gentle stretch. Personalised designs or a touch of blue add a meaningful, sentimental detail.

BRIDESMAIDS ON A BUDGET

Budget and Research

As a bride, it’s natural to want your closest friends and family by your side throughout the wedding journey, but you’ll also want to consider their budgets and comfort.

Start by discussing potential costs with your bridesmaids upfront—this shows you’re mindful of their expenses and helps avoid awkward surprises.

Outline anticipated costs, like the hen night, transport, outfits, and gifts, and make it clear that you’re open to discussing what they’re comfortable spending.

Thoughtful Gifts

Remind your bridesmaids that the best gifts aren’t always the most extravagant.

A simple, meaningful gesture, like a thoughtful piece of jewellery or a handmade photo album, can be more special than anything pricey.

If your bridesmaids are on a budget, encourage them to consider something heartfelt—perhaps they could even pool together for one meaningful item from the gift list.

Group Travel Savings

If you’ll all be travelling for pre-wedding events or the wedding itself, suggest coordinating plans to cut down costs. Group discounts on flights and hotels can make a big difference, and shared travel is a great way to build excitement.

If some are road-tripping, a shared vehicle rental not only saves on fuel but keeps the bridal party together for added fun.

Shared Accommodation

Accommodations can quickly add up, so consider encouraging your bridesmaids to

Dessy bridesmaid dresses are a go-to choice for modern weddings, offering a combination of style, versatility, and comfort. With a wide range of silhouettes, fabrics, and colours, the collection ensures that every bridal party can feel coordinated yet individual. From flowing chiffon gowns to structured crepe designs, Dessy balances elegance with ease of wear, making it simple for bridesmaids to move, dance, and celebrate throughout the day.

share a room or suite where possible. This approach often lets them upgrade their stay while splitting costs, making for a more enjoyable experience without a big financial burden.

DIY Decorations and Favours

Save on wedding décor by hosting a crafting day with your bridesmaids. DIY favours, stationery, and small gifts can be made with budget-friendly materials and add a personal touch to the day.

Many resources online offer ideas for creating beautiful and affordable wedding decorations, and crafting can become a fun bonding experience.

One of the collection’s standout qualities is its adaptability. Many designs come in multiple lengths, necklines, and sleeve options, allowing each bridesmaid to select a style that suits her shape and personal preference while maintaining harmony across the group. The colour palette is equally impressive, with everything from soft pastels and classic neutrals to bold, statement-making hues, ensuring the gowns complement any wedding theme.

In addition to style, Dessy prioritises comfort and quality. Lightweight, breathable fabrics and thoughtful tailoring mean dresses look flattering while remaining comfortable for hours of wear. Whether your wedding is a formal affair, a relaxed countryside celebration, or a destination event, Dessy bridesmaid dresses provide timeless elegance, modern sophistication, and a flattering fit for every member of the bridal party.

Hair and Makeup Options

Professional styling is a lovely treat, but it’s not a must. If a bridesmaid would prefer to style herself, make sure she feels comfortable with that option. If you’re keen on a coordinated look, suggest makeup tutorials or share ideas to help them feel wedding-ready, while respecting their budget.

Flexible Dress Choices

Bridesmaid dresses are often a significant expense, but flexibility can go a long way. Look into dresses that your bridesmaids can wear again, or consider convertible dresses that allow for personalisation while keeping a unified style.

Renting or buying pre-loved gowns are also budget-friendly options. If they’ll need alterations, recommend a trusted tailor— often, this is more affordable than in-store options. After the wedding, let them know it’s perfectly fine to sell or donate the dress if it won’t be worn again.

Final Thoughts

The role of bridesmaid is both an honour and a commitment, so making the experience as enjoyable and manageable as possible shows your appreciation for their support. Encourage them to set their own boundaries and budgets from the start, and communicate openly. This way, everyone can focus on celebrating together without stress or strain.

Finding the Perfect Wedding Venue

Choosing the perfect wedding venue is one of the most exciting parts of planning your special day, but it can also be overwhelming. With so many options available, it’s important to consider the details that will make your venue the ideal fit for your celebration.

Start by thinking about your vision for the day. Do you dream of a grand country manor, a rustic barn, or a sleek city venue? Consider the atmosphere and style that best reflect you as a couple. If you're planning an outdoor ceremony, ensure the venue has backup options in case of weather changes.

Budget is another key factor. Many venues offer packages that include catering, décor, and even accommodation, so decide what’s most important to you and what you’re willing to compromise on. Lastly, think about the personal touches. Does the venue allow for customisation? Can you incorporate your own theme or special details to make the space truly yours?

Finding the Perfect Wedding Suppliers

Your wedding suppliers are the people who will turn your aspirations into a real, living celebration — so choosing wisely (and working well together) is key.

Start by doing your homework: read reviews, browse portfolios and meet potential suppliers either in person or via video call to see if your personalities click. Trust matters, especially with photographers, celebrants and planners who’ll be by your side throughout the day.

Once you’ve found “the one” (or several!), be clear and honest about your budget, expectations and nonnegotiables from the outset.

Great suppliers appreciate good communication, and the more detail you provide (timings, venue logistics,

guest numbers and style preferences) the smoother everything will run. Always ensure you have contracts, payment schedules and key agreements in writing, including cancellation policies and what happens if something goes wrong. It’s not unromantic, it’s sensible.

To discover brilliant local talent, explore venue recommended lists, social media and trusted directories, and don’t underestimate wedding fairs.

The National Wedding Show events in London, Birmingham and Manchester are fantastic for meeting suppliers face-to-face and comparing options in one place.

Above all, treat your suppliers with kindness and respect, a happy team delivers their very best work.

CLASSIC CARS: TIMELESS ELEGANCE

There’s nothing quite like a Rolls-Royce or a vintage Beauford to give your arrival a sense of occasion. These timeless beauties are popular choices for their elegance and charm, often decorated with ribbons to match your theme. Whether it’s a glossy Bentley or a striking Jaguar, the smooth ride and plush interiors make them perfect for photographs too. Prices between £400 and £600, depending on the car and location.

HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE: FAIRYTALE FANTASY

For a truly magical entrance, a horse-drawn carriage feels straight out of a storybook. Whether you prefer a classic carriage or a Cinderella-inspired design, it’s an unforgettable way to arrive in style. Just remember to factor in distance and timing, as horses have natural limitations. Prices typically start from around £800 for a few hours of hire.

VINTAGE VW CAMPERVAN: RETRO ROMANCE

A 1970s VW campervan is ideal for boho weddings or anyone craving a retro vibe. Not only can it transport up to seven passengers comfortably, but it also doubles as a quirky photo booth once you arrive. Perfect for relaxed countryside or beachside ceremonies. Hire costs are typically £450 to £650, including decoration and driver.

MODERN LUXURY CARS: SLEEK AND STYLISH

For a contemporary couple, think along the lines of a Tesla, Range Rover, or MercedesBenz. These cars provide the perfect combination of comfort and cutting-edge style, with some even offering eco-friendly electric options. Hire costs typically range from £300 to £500, depending on the model and customisation.

PARTY BUSES: THE CELEBRATION STARTER

If you're looking to bring a sense of fun and festival energy to your wedding day, a party bus is a brilliant way to start the celebrations early. Vintage doubledeckers, retro buses, or modern party-style transport can all create a wonderfully quirky experience for your guests, adding personality, excitement, and a little playful theatre before they’ve even arrived at the venue.

Many couples choose to use a bus to shuttle guests between locations, offering a relaxed, sociable atmosphere along the way. Some buses even feature onboard bars, lounge-style seating, or themed décor, turning the journey itself into part of the celebration.

It’s a great option for weddings held in rural areas or venues with limited parking, and it keeps everyone together — especially helpful if you’re coordinating multiple stops throughout the day. Whether you want something elegant, nostalgic, or full-on party vibes, a wedding bus brings a unique touch and a shared sense of adventure, creating joyful memories long before the main event begins.

QUIRKY TRANSPORT IDEAS

Forget tradition and make an entrance your guests will never forget. Quirky wedding transport is about personality, fun and a sense of adventure. For country-loving couples, arriving on a beautifully polished tractor adds rural charm and a nod to farming roots. Tuk-tuks bring vibrant colour and a relaxed, holiday feel, perfect for summer celebrations and festival-style weddings. Motorcycles suit thrill-seekers, whether it’s a classic bike with sidecar or matching his-and-hers machines roaring away from the ceremony. Stretched limousines remain a playful icon, offering space, glamour and a touch of tongue-in-cheek excess. You could even consider vintage campervans, golf buggies, boats or quirky electric vehicles. The key is choosing transport that reflects you as a couple, creates unforgettable photos and turns your arrival and departure into part of the celebration itself. Long after the vows, guests will still be talking fondly.

LET’S DANCE

From live bands and classical quartets to DJs, magicians and bespoke performances, the right entertainment sets the tone for your entire wedding day. We explore how to create unforgettable moments for you and your guests...

Few moments on a wedding day are as emotionally charged as a couple’s first dance. It marks the transition from ceremony to celebration, and it is often the point where guests feel the true personality of the couple shine through. From the very first notes played in church to the song that opens the dancefloor, music plays a defining role in shaping the day.

Timeless Choices for the Ceremony

For couples marrying in a church or traditional venue, classical music remains a popular and elegant choice.

Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D continues to top the list for bridal entrances, admired for its gentle rhythm and romantic familiarity. Other enduring favourites include Debussy’s Clair de Lune, Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring and Mendelssohn’s Wedding March for a triumphant exit.

Live musicians – whether an organist, string quartet or solo violinist – can elevate these moments beautifully, adding atmosphere and gravitas while complementing the setting. Many couples choose to mix traditional pieces with lighter arrangements to personalise the ceremony without losing its sense of occasion.

Choosing “Your” First Dance Song

As the day moves from ceremony to reception, musical choices tend to become more personal. The first dance is often less about trends and more about shared memories, favourite artists or lyrics that tell a couple’s story. Some opt for modern chart-toppers, others for timeless love songs that feel instantly familiar.

Opposite this feature, you’ll find our curated list of the most popular first dance songs chosen by couples across the UK. From contemporary romance to enduring classics, it’s a useful

starting point for anyone struggling to narrow down the perfect track.

Beyond the First Dance

Entertainment doesn’t stop once the first dance is complete. Over the page, we explore a range of options designed to keep the celebration flowing – from live bands and DJs to string ensembles, surprise performers and evening entertainment that ensures the dancefloor stays full long into the night.

A Surprise Worth Practising

One growing trend is for couples to take dance lessons ahead of the big day. Whether it’s simply gaining confidence or learning a choreographed routine to surprise guests, lessons can transform nerves into excitement.

For many couples, the first dance becomes one of the most talked-about moments of the day, captured on camera and remembered long after the final song has played.

Choosing music that feels authentic, rather than what feels expected, helps ensure the moment is genuinely meaningful rather than performative. Over the page we’ll explore other options for wedding reception entertainment!

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT

Wedding DJ

Wedding DJs do far more than press play! A good DJ reads the room, blends genres and keeps energy high from first dance to final track. Look for someone who meets you beforehand, builds a bespoke playlist and understands when to mix in requests. Professional sound and lighting matter, as does a smart appearance and clear announcements. Ask about backup equipment and experience with your venue. Prices typically range from £500–£1,200, depending on hours, travel and production.

Options include all-day hosting, mood lighting, silent discos or vinyl DJs for couples wanting a distinctive, stylish soundtrack. MC skills and timeline management are invaluable on busy wedding days.

Singing Waiters

Singing waiters deliver surprise, laughter and a memorable talking point, usually bursting into song mid-meal and building to a fullroom singalong. The key is timing and secrecy: confirm how staff will be briefed and when the reveal happens.

Ask about vocal styles, costumes and whether songs can be tailored to you. Most performances last 30–45 minutes and work well between courses. Guide prices are typically £900–£1,800 for one or two performers, rising with larger casts. Options range from classical to pop, musical theatre or even bespoke parody numbers for bold couples, and guest comfort beforehand. Image: www.silverservicesingers.com.

Live Band or Musicians

A string quartet for the ceremony?

An acoustic guitarist for drinks or a full band to fill the dancefloor? Hearing live recordings and seeing recent reviews is essential. Musicians should coordinate with your timings and learn key pieces, including your processional or first dance. Guide prices vary widely: soloists from

£300–£700, quartets £900–£1,800, and bands £1,500–£3,500+. Options include roaming bands, jazz trios, tribute acts or combining live musicians with a DJ for seamless coverage.

Check setup times, dress code and sound limits to avoid surprises on the day. Outdoor performances may require amplification and weather contingency plans too beforehand.

Table Magician

Ideal for breaking the ice and keeping energy flowing while photographs are taken. Look for a performer who feels personable rather than intrusive, and ask to see live footage or testimonials from similar weddings. Professional magicians tailor material to mixed ages and cultures, and should carry public liability insurance.

Expect performances of two to three hours. Guide prices usually fall between £400 and £900, depending on experience and duration. Options include mind-reading, bespoke tricks using names or rings, or a short stand-up finale.

A skilled magician can also quietly manage crowd flow, ensuring guests are engaged without pulling focus from key moments. Discuss dress code and pacing so magic complements speeches and service. Children can be included with age-appropriate effects, while adults enjoy sleight of hand. Avoid overbooking tables to keep the experience special. Some magicians offer pre-wedding consultations and customised routines themed to your wedding.

Toastmaster

A professional toastmaster brings calm authority, ensuring your day runs smoothly and on time. Dressed traditionally, they coordinate suppliers, announce key moments and guide guests discreetly. Look for clear communication, experience with your style of wedding and strong venue knowledge. Guide prices are typically £350–£800.

Image: www.mathewknightmagician.co.uk.

Fireworks

Fireworks create a dramatic finale, perfect for evening celebrations and unforgettable photographs. Before booking, check your venue’s licence, local restrictions and curfews, as well as noise considerations for animals and neighbours. Always use fully insured, professional pyrotechnicians. Displays can be choreographed to music or kept short and spectacular. Guide prices start around £700 for modest shows, rising to £3,000+ for large, bespoke displays. Options include low-noise fireworks, daytime smoke effects, sparklers for guests or illuminated letters as alternatives. Weather planning is essential, with clear safety zones and wetweather contingencies. When timed after cake-cutting or first dance, fireworks feel celebratory without overwhelming the day. Ask about coordination with photographers to capture the moment safely and beautifully.

Top Tips for Choosing Your Wedding Cake: selecting the perfect wedding cake is one of the sweetest parts of planning your special day. Beyond the aesthetic, your cake serves as a centrepiece for the reception and a symbol of celebration. Here’s how to ensure your wedding cake is both beautiful and delicious:

1. Match the Cake to Your Style

Your cake should complement the theme and feel of your wedding. Whether it’s a timeless white tiered design, a whimsical naked cake, or a contemporary geometric masterpiece, discuss your vision with a skilled cake designer. Bring along inspiration, such as fabric swatches or mood boards, to guide their creativity.

2. Start Early

Popular cake makers book up quickly, especially during peak wedding season. Begin your search at least six months in advance to secure your preferred baker. This also leaves ample time for consultations, sketches, and tastings.

3. Think About Flavour

Gone are the days of plain fruit cake being the only option. From lemon and elderflower to chocolate ganache, the choices are endless. Opt for flavours you both love, and consider multiple tiers with different fillings to please all your guests.

4. Consider the Venue and Season

If you’re tying the knot outdoors in summer, delicate buttercream or ganache may not fare well in the heat. Speak to your baker about seasonal ingredients and designs that suit your venue and climate.

5. Budget Wisely

Wedding cakes vary widely in cost depending on size, design intricacy, and flavours. Be upfront about your budget so your designer can tailor the cake accordingly. Remember, a simple design can still look elegant and taste exquisite.

6. Portion Planning

Work with your baker to ensure the cake serves your guest list. A threetier cake generally feeds 75 to 100 people, but this can vary depending on slice size. If you have a large wedding, consider a cutting cake in the back to supplement the display cake.

7. Schedule a Tasting

Tasting sessions are a must! This is your chance to try various flavours, textures, and fillings. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or request tweaks to suit your preferences.

8. Focus on Presentation

The cake table is often a focal point. Discuss styling ideas with your florist or decorator, and consider adding a cake topper or personalised details for a unique touch.

9. Don’t Forget Logistics

Ensure someone is responsible for picking up or arranging delivery of the cake on the big day. Check that the venue has suitable storage, a stable table, and the proper tools for cutting and serving.

10. Trust Your Cake Maker

Finally, choose a cake designer whose portfolio you adore and who you feel confident working with. Their expertise will bring your vision to life while guiding you through practical considerations.

Beth Haxby Cakes specialises in creating beautifully crafted, bespoke wedding cakes with the kind of taste and attention to detail that turns dessert into art. FLOWERS

PERFECT WEDDING FLOWERS

PLANNING A WEDDING MEANS MAKING COUNTLESS DECISIONS, AND CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLOWERS IS ONE OF THE MOST DELIGHTFUL.

Choosing seasonal flowers for your wedding ensures vibrant arrangements, fresh blooms, and a harmonious connection with nature. Here’s our guide to the best wedding flowers for spring and summer in the UK, ideal for crafting stunning bouquets and décor.

Autumn (September – November)

Autumn brings rich, warm tones and more textured foliage. Think dahlias in deep crimson, burnt orange, and plum, as well as berries, seed heads, and foliage in shades of copper and gold. Chrysanthemums and marigolds provide longevity and structure, while roses remain plentiful. Rustic elements like dried grasses or pampas add softness, perfect for a more natural, bohemian style.

Winter (December – February)

Winter weddings can be magical, with rich colour palettes and elegant evergreens. Amaryllis, hellebores (Christmas roses), anemones, and ranunculus all thrive in cooler months. Incorporate fragrant sprigs of rosemary or pine, plus seasonal berries for texture. White blooms, such as paperwhites or orchids, look striking against deep greenery, creating a crisp and classic winter aesthetic.

Spring (March – May)

Spring is a season of new beginnings, making it ideal for weddings. The choice of flowers is plentiful, with delicate textures and soft pastels. Popular picks include romantic ranunculus, anemones, tulips, and sweet peas, which bring fragrance as well as charm. Blossom branches, such as cherry or apple, add height and drama to arrangements, while peonies make their first fleeting appearance in May, offering lush, ruffled petals in soft blush and ivory tones.

Summer (June – August)

Summer offers the widest choice of wedding blooms. This is prime time for classic roses, hydrangeas, dahlias, and larkspur. Peonies continue into June, while sunflowers and cosmos add a cheerful, informal feel later in the season. English garden favourites like delphiniums and lavender work beautifully for country celebrations, and trailing greenery like eucalyptus or jasmine creates a relaxed, romantic look for arches and table garlands.

IN THE FRAME

From candid, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them moments to timeless family portraits, your wedding photographs will become part of your shared history. Choosing the right photographer – and knowing how to work with them –is essential to capturing the day exactly as it unfolds

Your wedding photographs will long outlive the cake, the flowers and even the dress. Choosing the right photographer – and knowing how to work with them – is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning your day. From understanding styles to managing expectations, here are ten essential tips to help ensure your wedding photography is everything you hope for.

Consider a twoperson team

A photographer working with a second shooter – often a husband-and-wife team –can provide a richer, more complete record of your day. While one follows the bride, the other can stay with the groom, or one can focus on beautifully posed images while the other captures candid, spontaneous moments. This dual perspective often results in a more balanced and emotionally resonant collection of images.

Leave it to the professionals

It can be tempting to rely on a well-meaning friend with a good camera, but weddings are unpredictable. A professional photographer brings experience, backup equipment and the ability to work calmly when the light drops, the weather turns or flash is required.

They’ll also know how to adapt quickly when things don’t go to plan – and something always changes.

Know your preferred photography style

Do you love classic, posed portraits or natural, documentary-style images that unfold without direction? Many photographers blend the two, but it’s important to understand the difference between traditional and reportage photography. Ask to see full wedding galleries, not just highlight reels, so you know exactly what to expect.

Book an engagement shoot

An engagement shoot is more than just a pre-wedding photoshoot – it’s a chance to see how your photographer works and how comfortable you feel in front of their lens. It also helps build trust and rapport, meaning you’ll feel far more relaxed on the wedding day itself.

Make sure they know your venue

A photographer familiar with your venue will already know the best locations, angles and lighting conditions. If they haven’t shot there before, ask whether they plan a recce. Local knowledge can make a noticeable difference, especially when time is tight or weather conditions change.

Agree a shot list, appoint a helper

While candid moments are priceless, there are usually key family and group shots you won’t want to miss. Agree a clear list in advance and assign a trusted groomsman or bridesmaid to help round people up on the day. This keeps things running smoothly and avoids unnecessary delays.

Postproduction and delivery times

It’s natural to be eager to see your images, but quality editing takes time. Ask when you can expect your photographs and be prepared to wait – good post-production is worth it. Understanding the photographer’s workflow helps manage expectations and avoids disappointment.

Feed

your photographer

If your photographer is working all day, providing them with a hot meal is not just courteous – it’s practical. A well-fed photographer will be more energised and focused for the evening celebrations, ensuring nothing is missed.

Discuss contingency plans

Ask what happens if your photographer is ill or unable to attend on the day. Professionals should have a robust backup plan, often involving trusted colleagues. Peace of mind is invaluable when planning a wedding.

Talk albums, editing and inspiration

Find out how your photographer reviews and selects images, whether an album is included, and how much input you’ll have. Sharing examples of photography styles you love – lighting, composition or mood – helps ensure your photographer understands your vision and can deliver images that feel authentically you.

Choosing the right wedding photographer is about far more than price or availability. It’s about trust, communication and a shared understanding of how you want your story told – beautifully, honestly and forever... and remember, as well as your husband and wife, the photos will be with you for the rest of your life!

Capturing your day...

While beautifully shot photographs will always be at the heart of your wedding memories, there are many other ways to capture the atmosphere, emotion and fun of your day.

From cinematic films to interactive guest experiences, these additional options can add depth, movement and personality to your wedding story.

Wedding Videography

A wedding film captures what photographs cannot: movement, sound and fleeting moments. The nervous laugh before the ceremony, the crack in a parent’s voice during speeches, or the energy of the dancefloor late into the night – these are moments best experienced in motion.

Many couples who were initially unsure about videography later say it’s one of the best decisions they made. A wellcrafted wedding film allows you to relive the day as it unfolded, not just how it looked, but how it felt.

Style is everything. Videographers range from documentarystyle filmmakers, who discreetly record events as they happen, to more cinematic creators who use dramatic music, slow motion and creative editing. Watch full films, not just highlight reels, and make sure their approach matches your personality as a couple.

Sound quality is also crucial. Ask whether speeches and vows are recorded using discreet microphones, and check what is included: a short highlight film, a longer feature edit, or both.

Venues with good natural light, space for movement and interesting surroundings lend themselves beautifully to film. Some historic venues may have restrictions on equipment or drone use, so it’s worth checking early and ensuring your videographer is familiar with similar settings.

Guide price: £1,200–£2,500 for a professional UK wedding videographer, depending on coverage hours, number of films delivered and whether a second videographer is included.

Drone Photography

Drone footage has become increasingly popular, offering a dramatic, birdseye view of your wedding location. From sweeping shots of country estates to aerial views of marquee receptions and coastal venues, drones can add a cinematic opening or closing to both photo galleries and wedding films.

Drones work best at venues with space – rural settings, stately homes and large gardens are ideal – and in favourable weather conditions. Urban venues or locations close to airports may be restricted, so permissions are key.

Your supplier should be a licensed drone operator, fully insured and compliant with Civil Aviation Authority regulations.

Not all photographers or videographers are legally permitted to fly drones, so always check credentials. Drone coverage is usually brief but impactful, used to enhance rather than dominate the final result.

Guide price: £150–£400 as an add-on to photography or videography packages.

Photo booths for fun

Photo booths are a brilliant way to capture a completely different side of your wedding day. While your main photographer focuses on elegant, emotive imagery, a booth allows guests to let loose and create playful, often hilarious keepsakes.

Traditional photo booths usually include instant prints, personalised backdrops and a box of novelty props – think oversized glasses, silly hats, signs and speech bubbles. They’re particularly popular during the evening reception, when guests are relaxed and looking for entertainment.

Many booths now offer digital galleries, allowing guests to download their images after the event, and guest books where copies of photos are stuck in alongside handwritten messages.

Guide price: £300–£600 for three to four hours, including props and prints.

Engagement Shoots

An engagement shoot isn’t part of the wedding day itself, but it plays an important role in the overall experience. These relaxed sessions allow you to get used to being photographed together, build rapport with your photographer and create images that can be used for savethedates, wedding websites or guest books. Shoots often take place at meaningful locations – where you met, got engaged, or simply somewhere you love – and the results tend to feel natural and personal.

Guide price: £200–£500, or sometimes included in premium wedding photography packages.

Boudoir photography

Boudoir photography is a more intimate option, often booked as a private gift for a partner. These shoots are typically styled, tasteful and confidenceboosting, focusing on elegance rather than overt glamour. They’re usually carried out well in advance of the wedding and can be held in a studio, luxury hotel or even your own home.

Guide price: £300–£800, depending on time, styling and finished products.

(Now Let’s Go!) We Do!

Congratulations, you’ve celebrated your special day in the company of friends and family... but the fun isn’t over yet! Enjoy your first few days as a married couple with one of our suggested honeymoon destinations

For many couples, the honeymoon is the first chance to pause, exhale and celebrate married life away from the excitement of the wedding day. Whether you are dreaming of long-haul luxury or a shorter European escape, a little forward planning will ensure your honeymoon begins as smoothly as possible.

Before booking, double-check that your passports are valid for the full duration required by your destination, bearing in mind that some countries insist on at least six months’ validity beyond your return date.

If you plan to change your name after the wedding, it is usually far simpler to travel on your existing passport and update documents once you are home. Airline tickets must match the name shown on your passport exactly, so resist the temptation to rush paperwork before you fly.

Comprehensive travel insurance is essential, even for short trips or destinations within Europe. Make sure your policy covers medical treatment, cancellations, lost luggage and any activities you intend to

enjoy, from snorkelling to skiing. If you are travelling long haul, it is also worth checking vaccination advice well in advance.

When it comes to packing, think beyond swimwear and evening outfits. Carry copies of important documents, both digital copies (that can be used as a backup) and the printed originals, along with chargers, adaptors and any medication you may need.

A small first aid kit, sun protection and a light jacket for evenings can be invaluable. Many couples also pack something sentimental, such as a wedding photo or handwritten note, as a quiet reminder of the celebration you have just shared.

Most importantly, remember that a honeymoon is not about perfection but about time together. Allow space for rest, spontaneity and the occasional indulgence. After months of planning, this is your moment to relax, reconnect and begin married life with unforgettable memories.

WHERE TO WED

Your Guide to Legal Wedding Venues in the UK

Planning a wedding is an exciting journey filled with choices, from selecting the perfect dress to finding the right flowers. But one of the most crucial decisions is where to say “I do.” While you may have a dream location in mind, not all places in the UK are legally approved for marriage ceremonies. Understanding the legalities can make a big difference when planning your special day, so let’s take a look at the types of venues available for your wedding and what you need to know to ensure everything is above board.

Civil Ceremonies

If you’re looking for a non-religious ceremony, a civil ceremony is the ideal option. The good news is that there are a variety of places across the UK where you can hold a civil wedding, but the rules differ slightly depending on the country.

England and Wales:

In England and Wales, you can legally wed at licensed locations, including register offices, town halls, hotels, country houses, barns, and even gardens, as long as the site holds an official marriage licence. Recently, regulations have been updated to allow for more flexibility, enabling couples to marry in any part of the venue’s grounds—without the need for a fixed structure like a gazebo or archway—provided the venue has local authority approval. This change has opened up many more picturesque options for those seeking outdoor ceremonies.

It’s important to remember that civil ceremonies cannot take place in any premises with religious connections, so you’ll need to choose a secular location. Once you have selected your venue, you must give notice of your intention to marry at your local register office. This notice period is typically 28 days, but if either of you is

subject to immigration control, this may extend up to 70 days. Fees for registrars vary, starting at around £46 for a simple ceremony at a register office and increasing depending on the venue and requirements.

Scotland:

Scotland offers significantly more freedom when it comes to wedding locations. Couples can legally marry almost anywhere, whether it’s on a beach, in a forest, or even on a mountaintop, provided the officiant conducting the ceremony is authorised. This relaxed approach makes Scotland a popular choice for couples looking to create a unique and memorable ceremony in an outdoor setting. However, you still need to complete the necessary paperwork, including submitting marriage notices to the local registrar at least 29 days before the ceremony date.

Northern Ireland:

In Northern Ireland, civil ceremonies must take place at a venue approved by the local council, such as a register office, hotel, or historic building. Outdoor ceremonies are possible, but less common, and the venue must be licensed accordingly. The process is similar to England and Wales, requiring at least 28 days’ notice and a booking with a registrar to officiate.

Religious Ceremonies

Religious ceremonies in the UK are governed by different rules, depending on the specific faith and location of the ceremony. Here’s what you need to know:

Anglican Church Weddings:

For couples wishing to marry in an Anglican church (the Church of England or the Church in Wales), the process is straightforward. If you or your partner are regular attendees, you may have the right to marry in that church without the need to give notice at a register office. Instead, the church will announce your intention to marry on three consecutive Sundays leading up to the wedding, a process known as “publishing the banns.” However, if neither of you are connected to the parish, you may need to establish a link by attending services regularly for a set period before the wedding day.

Same-sex marriages are not currently permitted in the Church of England, although civil partnerships are recognised.

Other Religious Ceremonies:

If you’re planning to marry in a religious building other than an Anglican church, such as a mosque, synagogue, or temple, you’ll need to check that the building is registered for marriage ceremonies. Additionally, you and your partner must give notice at a local register office at least 28 days before the ceremony. For some faiths, such as Judaism and the Quaker tradition, ceremonies can be legally recognised without the presence of a registrar. Same-sex marriages are allowed in religious buildings that have opted in, but this varies depending on the denomination.

Approved Premises for Weddings and Civil Partnerships

For couples seeking a modern or alternative setting, approved premises are a popular choice. These include a wide range of locations such as stately homes, castles, hotels, country clubs, and even some restaurants. To host a legally binding ceremony, a venue must meet specific licensing criteria, including adhering to safety and accessibility standards and providing an appropriate and dignified setting for a wedding.

The licensing process is thorough, and venues must apply for approval from the local authority, ensuring that the ceremony space is “fit for purpose.” These venues often book up quickly, especially during peak wedding season, so planning well in advance is recommended.

To discover thousands of venues visit www.confetti.co.uk.

Outdoor and

Alternative Wedding Locations

With the increasing popularity of outdoor and alternative wedding venues, more couples are exploring unconventional locations like farms, woodlands, or private gardens. To marry legally in these settings, the site must be registered as an approved premise or hold a separate license. However, there is an alternative: you can legally marry in a register office and then hold a celebratory ceremony in an unlicensed location afterwards. This option allows couples to have a symbolic celebration in the

setting of their dreams, combining the formality of a legal ceremony with the beauty of a personalised, scenic celebration.

Destination Weddings and Marrying Abroad

If you’re considering a destination wedding, the rules and requirements differ significantly depending on the country. Popular wedding destinations like Italy, France, and Greece each have their own legal processes, and you may need to provide specific documents, such as birth certificates, proof of residence, and certificates of no impediment (confirming that you’re free to marry). It’s best to start planning early and consult the appropriate embassy or a specialised wedding planner who can guide you through the process.

Final Considerations

Whichever type of ceremony you choose, there are some consistent elements to remember:

Witnesses: You’ll need at least two witnesses at your wedding, who must sign the register or marriage certificate.

Notice Period: Most ceremonies require at least 28 days’ notice, with some exceptions.

Fees: Costs apply for giving notice and for the services of registrars or officiants.

Understanding the legal requirements and choosing a venue that suits your style and needs will help ensure that your wedding day is unique and meaningful. Whether you opt for a traditional church wedding, a modern civil ceremony, or an outdoor celebration, the choice is yours—just be sure to follow the rules to keep everything legally binding and stress-free.
