The past 19 months have revealed that our world is not only capable of profound change—but that we are on the precipice of what could be complete transformation. Within that time, COVID-19 has fundamentally changed our lives. Uprisings against racial injustice have made clear the need for sweeping societal changes. Political and climate crises have impacted every corner of our region, country, and world in ways that can no longer be ignored.

Throughout 2021, though, momentum toward that transformation seemed to backslide, as our shared exhaustion and frustration have grown. But we continue to hold tangible hope for a post-pandemic future informed by all we’ve learned—a world based in true equity and justice. u e-G ri tl

Movement is still happening. At Pride Foundation, we get to hear it, feel it, see it, and bear witness to it every single day. Across LGBTQ+ communities in the Northwest, there are powerful instances of the progress toward justice all around us. It’s in the work of our grantee partners and scholars who show up for community every day. It’s in our supporters who affirm their belief and hope with every gift. Our work now is to keep finding this movement—to participate in it, to support its growth. To remember that we are fundamentally interconnected and in this together for the long haul. We will keep finding the joy and celebration necessary to sustain ourselves and our work. We will keep embracing our resilience and our people. We will keep fighting. Thank you for fueling, cultivating, and believing in this movement alongside us. We need you in this work, and our community wouldn’t be the same without you.
With gratitude,
Katie & Brandy 2
Together we are a
Movement
In Pride Foundation’s ecosystem, every single person contributes something uniquely beautiful and deeply vital. Our collective actions create movement—of energy, resources, love, and care—that ripple out across our communities and region. Our interconnected movement fuels Pride Foundation’s work to create a more equitable world where LGBTQ+ people have the thriving abundance we need to care for our communities.
We have moved so much and our work is far from over. Together, we are transforming our region.

Scholarships Pride Foundation scholarships support LGBTQ+ students who, despite having faced incredible barriers, are extraordinary leaders in our community. These Scholars and Scholar Alumni are not only working to achieve their educational and professional dreams—they are driving movements for equity and justice across the Northwest and beyond.
This past year, we awarded
$601,000 to 95 students.
We’ve awarded
over $7 million to 2,200+ students
across the Northwest since 1993. 6
Stories From Our
Scholars
Our scholarship program funds LGBTQ+ students who are leaders—in their own lives, in their families, in their home communities, in their fields of study, or in our movements for justice. We asked just a few 2021 Scholars and Scholar Alumni to tell us more about who they are, and what drives them in their work and education.
Kyle Agustines 2021 Scholar Field of Study: Fine Arts “ I discovered my passion for art while struggling with mental illness and coming to terms with my homosexuality in a family whose religious beliefs did not accept me. As an artist, I hope to better the world, to help us better understand each other, and to make a stand for others who are persevering through difficulty to achieve their educational dreams.”
Chloe Behan 2021 Scholar Fields of Study: Environmental Sciences & Library Information Sciences “ I do not study solely for a career. I do not dream of labor; I dream of liberation. My dream is to help facilitate the learning and growth of queer youth by providing more queer-affirming spaces to share information and gain useful skills. Libraries have always been my haven, and I believe that libraries with a commitment to sharing resources are a beacon of hope in this age of information crisis.”

“ I grew up as a queer kid in a community with no visible queer adults, much less trans folks or community spaces for queer youth. Now I live in rural Oregon, in a community with a similar lack of representation of queer lives, working to create those kinds of supportive, accessible spaces for queer youth as well as intergenerational spaces and queer history conversations, so that young people can see themselves in the places they live.”
8
Noahloni Garcia 2020 Scholar Field of Study: Social Work “ Growing up in Southeast Washington, there were few organizations and therapists that understood or were trained to be culturally sensitive to my needs as a poor, migrant, Latine person, especially not to my LGBTQ+ identities. I hope to move back and work for either non-profit organizations or for private practice clinics that work with LGBTQ+ individuals and that understand the importance of social justice within counseling.”

Grants Pride Foundation grants support organizations across the Northwest that are working passionately to meet the needs of our communities and advance justice for LGBTQ+ people. We prioritize LGBTQ+ groups that serve BIPOC communities, grassroots groups with limited access to other funding, and groups that support LGBTQ+ people in places where no one else is.
This past year, we awarded
170+ grants totaling over $1.6 million.
We’ve awarded
nearly $10 million
in grants across the Northwest since 1987. 12
Stories From Our
Grantee Partners
Our grant programs fund groups and organizations who are showing up for LGBTQ+ communities in every corner of our region every single day. We asked a few of these grantee partners to discuss what drives their work.
Black & Beyond the Binary Collective Crisis Community Care Fund recipient • Portland, Oregon “ Black and African transgender, queer, non-binary, and intersex communities have long created safety for each other. Our work is grounded in this tradition and history, and prioritizes deep communal connection, cultural recognition, traditional African healing practices, connecting over food, working communally with local healers, reconnecting with the land, and participating in music and art. Through our programming, we are creating even more opportunities to expand the care and safety that will get us closer to liberation.”
Glacier Queer Alliance Community Grants and Crisis Community Care Fund recipient • Kalispell, Montana “ LGBTQ+ folks in the Flathead Valley lack visibility, even amongst allies who want to support us. We knew we needed to create access points—meaningful opportunities to build authentic connections and relationships. We are providing positive, safe, and caring resources and welcoming physical gathering spaces for queer folks and for all in need of community—so that everyone in the Flathead Valley can feel safe and supported.”
Native Movement Community Grants recipient • Fairbanks, Alaska “ We are dedicated to building people power, rooted in an Indigenized worldview, toward healthy, just, and sustainable communities for ALL. Through grassroots-led projects, trainings, and workshops, we are dismantling oppressive systems that harm LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit communities. Together, we’re working for social justice, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, and the rights of Mother Earth.”
North Idaho AIDS Coalition Community Grants and Crisis Community Care Fund recipient • Coeur d’Alene, Idaho “ NIAC was born during a time when AIDS was taking the lives of our loved ones. Our community needed a safe space for our family and friends who were being ostracized, traumatized, and living in fear of stigma, hatred, and deepening cultural divides. We are continuing to build this critical space so that our clients have food that nourishes them, strong connections to community, and the testing, treatment, and support systems they need to thrive.”
Odyssey Youth Movement Community Grants and Crisis Community Care Fund recipient • Spokane, Washington
Grants
“ LGBTQ+ youth deserve a thriving community right here in the Inland Northwest— and we created Odyssey as a youth-led, adult-supported movement to make that a reality. We are building programs to improve the lives of youth and young adults in the exact ways we need it, whether through food and clothing, or online and in-person spaces to connect.”

Community Advocacy, Education, & Research At Pride Foundation, we believe that one of the most powerful tools to shift culture is telling the breadth of our stories—the stories of our lives, our experiences, and our communities. TRANSformCulture is our community advocacy, education, and research program that shifts culture through community connection, relationship building, and storytelling.
The movement changes, but our goal is the same—to change culture to be
inclusive of all LGBTQ+ people. 18
Transforming Our
Culture
The work of TRANSformCulture is led and developed by the Village Council— a committee of community members from across the Northwest. Together, we use messaging research and community organizing to increase awareness and acceptance of the breadth of gender diversity, and to empower Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC), Two Spirit, trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender diverse community members as leaders within and beyond their own communities. “ As part of the Village Council guiding TRANSformCulture, being able to be part of a multi-generational group where I can sit across from an Indigenous elder, a Black trans femme activist, a Fa’afafine fellow organizer—having that beautiful blend of people and experiences, has really stood out for me.” — Village Council Member

Create Messages
TRANSformCulture is collecting hundreds of stories of BIPOC nonbinary, Two Spirit, trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender diverse people that will be used to build effective messages about the lives and experiences of our communities. Then, those stories and messages will be shared throughout local and national communities to drive policy, public education, and movement strategy— all with the goal of transforming our broader communities.
When it comes to advocacy, research, and public education, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The diagram above outlines every step of our process, but this approach shifts and adapts to the needs of every community we work with.

Research & Data Justice
At this program’s core is a commitment to using research and data justice frameworks that recognize that we are the experts on our own communities. Within these frameworks, the subjects and the experts are one and the same, and the research produced supports community-driven goals.
“ We’re going through global grief. Communities that have been impacted by transphobia, homophobia, racism, ableism, and the climate crisis are now suffering more than ever through COVID. We have the cultural, experiential, spiritual knowledge to fight these crises but these solutions are often not seen as valid in traditional academic research. Research justice honors community wisdom—because we have the fullest picture of what our communities need.” — Agaiotupu Viena, Director of TRANSformCulture
Centering Black & Indigenous Voices The Village Council is developing a research framework that explicitly centers the voices, experiences, and leadership of Black and Indigenous folks. “ We want to see a focus on anti-blackness and deconstructing it in all of our atmospheres—holding the voices, experiences, and knowledge of Black people, whether singularly identifying as Black, Black and Indigenous, AfroLatinx, particularly if their outward experience as a Black person.”
“ Anti-Blackness is Anti-Indigeneity. To perpetrate that on others is to perpetrate that on ourselves.” —Mattie Mooney, Village Council Member

We were
Built to Meet This Moment We could not have predicted our current reality, but in so many ways, movements like ours have been building to respond to it. Alongside our entire ecosystem of grantee partners, scholars, supporters, and community members, Pride Foundation was poised to put our years of experience, planning, and deep relationships into action through the many crises of the past 19 months. Despite it all, our collective love, care, and resources flowed together abundantly to our meet communities’ needs, growing and transforming our work to meet the moment.

Resource Mobilization Pride Foundation began in 1985 with a group of LGBTQ+ leaders around a kitchen table. They believed in a simple but revolutionary idea: that every person should be able to live safely, openly, and genuinely in all the places we call home. Their idea sparked a community movement—and what is now the only LGBTQ+ community foundation in the Northwest. We partner with a vast network of individuals, fundholders, businesses, and foundation partners to mobilize resources and increase the impact of LGBTQ+ philanthropy in the Northwest.
Together we have mobilized and awarded
more than $80 million
to build a world in which all LGBTQ+ people can be
who we are, where we are. 26
Stories From Our
Supporters
Every day, our supporters show their dedication to building a world where we can all live openly and safely in all the communities we call home. We asked a few of them to discuss what drives their support of Pride Foundation.

“ For much of my life and work in social justice, I’ve had to choose between focusing on issues of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Pride Foundation is so intentional about tackling intersecting identities and creates space for a person’s whole self in this work.”
“ We are both fortunate and honored to be able to help fund the work of underserved and marginalized LGBTQI communities, including communities of color, through our Pride Foundation donor advised fund. We give through Pride Foundation because we rely on their expertise to direct our money to where it can do the most good.”
Brent Olinger Havre, Montana
“ Growing up in rural America as a queer person, I always thought my aspirations for life were limited. Organizations like Pride Foundation help LGBTQ+ people realize that our aspirations are limitless. By providing scholarships and grants, Pride Foundation promotes freedom for LGBTQ+ people from the oppressive structures that seek to diminish our existence. Pride Foundation promotes self-love of LGBTQ+ people from large cities to rural communities.”
Your gifts are
transformational In 2020, we were facing the reality of the long, isolating pandemic, the presidential election was hanging in the balance, and our future was in a state of profound uncertainty. But it was in the midst of this disconcerting new world that Pride Foundation supporters like you showed up in the ways our communities needed most. We already had big plans for growing our work in 2021—from significantly increasing our grantmaking and offering multi-year support, to offering larger scholarship awards and creating an emergency fund for students. Your generosity, including an unrestricted gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, fueled these bold goals and helped us make an even bigger impact for LGBTQ+ communities during a critical time. While some gifts receive more press than most, at Pride Foundation, all the gifts we receive are transformational—because that’s what it means to be a community foundation. Supporters
Whether it’s the proceeds from a neighbor’s garage sale, or a large bequest—it is your collective support that fuels the work to advance equity and justice for LGBTQ+ people across the Northwest.

Whether you have been with us for decades or recently started engaging with our work—we appreciate you!
At Pride Foundation, we believe every gift is transformational and our work is about relationships. Because of this, we acknowledge our supporters in this report based on when they gave their first gift to Pride Foundation, instead of by gift amount.
