Two-spirit 1

Mixed media 74 x 20 x 15 cm Per-Egil Ramsøy was born in Fredrikstad in 1960, and is currently residing in San Fernando, Gran Canaria. He is particularly interested in Japanese raku firing, which means that the work is fired rapidly up to about 900 degrees, then immersed red glowing into sawdust. This causes the glaze to shrink and obtain completely different colors while the ceramic crackles.

Two-spirit. Before the european settlers came and stole their land, history and culture, the Native Americans had a culture where gender diversity was accepted. The modern term, although disputed, is two-spirit. Both male-bodied and female-bodied twospirit were accepted and played a significant role in their society. They were shamans, weavers artisans - even chiefs. Two-spirit people typically formed sexual and emotional relationships with non-two-spirit members of their own sex, forming both short- and longterm relationships. The faces express the artist´s impression, and are not depicting any tribe in particular.
