Congratulations and welcome to the University of Melbourne! You’ve already taken a great first step: picking up a copy of Melbourne Arts Students Society’s First Year Guide for 2022! Over the following pages, you will learn most of the information which is needed in order to survive your first year at UniMelb.

Coming from an “unprecedented” last couple of years, you’re no doubt excited, but maybe also a little nervous to jump into life as a uni student. I was in the same place not too long ago. Everything seemed big and daunting compared to the familiarity of the schoolyard, and I was so worried that I wouldn’t find my place at uni. Never fear - if you’ve joined our society then you’re already heading in the right direction. Whether you’re here to party, learn more about where an Arts degree can take you, or just to make a bunch of awesome new friends, (or all of the above!) you’ve come to the right place.

Personally, my uni experience has been defined by the friendships that I have formed throughout my years as a member of M-ASS. From Arts Camp as a ‘Jaffy’ in 2020, to Industry Nights on Zoom during what seemed like endless lockdowns, M-ASS has provided me with a sense of belonging that has helped me make the most of my uni experience thus far.

POV: You’ve just started your first year at uni and you’re hearing all these acronyms thrown around: UMSU, SSAF, CAPS, etc. Your friend tells you that M-ASS is running an Arts Camp in Feb! But… hold on, what the heck does M-ASS mean?

M-ASS stands for Melbourne Arts Students Society, or Mega Awesome Sickest Society depending on who you ask. We’re a social and educational club here at the University of Melbourne, welcoming members from all faculties, in particular those studying the Bachelor of Arts.

Our not-for-profit society is run by students for students, and we’re dedicated to providing all UniMelb students with a supportive and welcoming community where our members can meet HEAPS of new friends and make the most of uni life.

As the biggest student club on campus (and in the Southern Hemisphere!), we pride ourselves on the quality of both our social events (including Arts Camp, Paint ’n’ Glow, and Arts Ball), and our educational events - with our regular industry nights showcasing a range of professionals working in fields connected to the Arts degree and providing excellent networking opportunities.

For a $4 annual membership, M-ASS provides members with discounted tickets to our regular social events, free access to our catered educational events, free BBQs every second week (did someone say sausage sizzle?), and discounts at several places on campus - including Carte Crêpes and Schnitz!

Starting your first year at uni can be daunting, especially after spending the past two years online. However, the best way to get the most of your uni experience is to jump in head first by joining a club like M-ASS. Kick-start your uni adventure by getting involved, and get ready to make great memories!

M-ASS to the rescue! Here are 3 ways to meet your twin flame at an overwhelmingly large and bewildering uni.

1. Go on camps, specifically ARTS CAMP! Now we know what you’re thinking, CAMP?! ME?! No, sorry, I will not be dancing around a campfire with strangers singing Kumbaya. WRONG. Arts camp is a 3-day, magical, friend making bender, whereby 200 strangers come together to meet like-minded Jaffys on the D-floor in the bush. Think Falls Festival but without the tents and porta-potties.

2. Attend EVERY club event possible.

Think about everything that interests you - from skiing to scrabble, there’s a UniMelb club dedicated to it! This is the easiest way to meet people, of whom you can have soul igniting, passionate convos with until 3am. No boring small talk required! We promise you, going to the random Thursday pub night alone may actually be the start of a lifelong friendship.

3. Muster up the courage to talk to absolutely EVERYONE. In your lectures and tutorials, you’re not the only person feeling frightened and embarrassed to speak up. Everyone entering university from high school feels like they’re in a maze with no idea where to turn. If someone seems approachable and nice, don’t be shy to introduce yourself!

So, you got through year 12. You made it to Uni. You now want to make a bunch of great new friends, but where do you start? Don’t worry!

The answer is simple: ARTS CAMP 2022.

Arts Camp is, without a doubt, the best way to make new friends and throw yourself into life at UniMelb. The connections you make on camp will last right through your uni experience, and also set you up with a safety net of friendly faces to help you adjust in those first couple of months on campus.

But, what is Arts Camp? From February 25th-27th, M-ASS takes 200 first years to the beautiful Licola Wilderness Village for an epic weekend of fun and bonding. It’s kind of like a school camp, except you can drink and party, and we don’t make you hike all day and sleep in tents at night (unless you want to, of course).

Campers are put in teams and paired with experienced leaders to compete against each other in challenges to win the coveted Arts Camp Trophy, all the while making wholesome new friendships along the way.

Also, there’s no mobile reception, which makes camp the perfect place to unwind and really immerse yourself into life as a uni student.

With camp at the end of O-Week this year, there’s no better way to set yourself up for Week 1. Camp tickets are selling FAST, so make sure to snatch one up as soon as you can. Trust us – you don’t want to miss it, and if there is one thing for sure, it’s that you won’t regret going.

It can seem daunting for new students or aspiring members to integrate themselves into M-ASS, but there’s a few things you can do to get yourself involved!

M-ASS members get together and bond over our fortnightly BBQs! Our culinary trained chefs (AKA our BBQ Rep + volunteers) provide everyone with snags, drinks, and vegetarian/vegan options. These BBQs are FREE with your M-ASS membership, so fill up on some delicious food and make the most of an absolute bargain. Our BBQs are another opportunity for first years and older students alike to meet up and have a great time. For those who don’t come to Arts Camp, many have pointed to our BBQs as their entry point into M-ASS.

The best way to keep yourself in the loop with what M-ASS is up to is to join our Facebook groups. The M-ASS Facebook page is your first step to learning what is going on in M-ASS! However, to get the best content, the M-ASS General Committee (GC) Facebook group is the best way to get involved with M-ASS events throughout the year. Every time we have new merch, events, or anything else M-ASS related, the GC group will keep you updated. Also, befriend Artie Prime on Facebook (*wink*)! Artie is a legend in M-ASS and wants to get to know you all! M-ASS has provided so many new students with opportunities to make friends, so make sure you get involved!

I ripped Caitlyn’s skirt after borrowing it on Arts Camp for like 30 mins max…

This one time, someone went in for a fist bump and my brain short circuited and I literally just stared at their fist for like 30 seconds.

I still think about it all the time lmao.

My campers tried convincing me that ‘DJ Hotsauce’ was a renowned techno artist. Totally fell for it and bragged about how much I “loved his set.”

(1 like = 1 prayer)

One time I was crossing the road right outside uni feeling my fit when I tripped on the uneven concrete and FACE PLANTED in front of a crowd.

I have been forever humbled ever since.

I failed my driving test because for a hot minute I thought I was in America.

I had to be picked up from Uni Square by my Mum at Camp Regoonion pres (it was 7pm…).

I was kicked out of PA’s for dancing on the table… It was safe to say, I wasn’t allowed in the next day.

I forgot to pee after sculling a litre of goon before getting on the bus to Arts Camp and had to pee into a vomit bag (1/10, do not recommend).

I was scrolling through TikTok for 5 mins with my mic unmuted in a tute. *secretly watching TikTok drama*

I’m like, literally a donkey.

My most *iconic* moment was when I split my pants in the Slums bathroom after having one too many Liquid Golds.

I definitely did not tear my ACL doing ‘the sprinkler’ on stage.

I got into a heated argument with my mate, and accidentally sent a screenshot of our convo back to them...

The day after Arts Ball, M-ASS hosted a BBQ on campus.

Let’s just say, my stomach had a bit of a detox…

I fell down the stairs at The Last Jar...

I was DEAD SOBER. At least the curry sauce chips on their menu are good, though.

HOUSE OF CARDS

What’s better than a pick-me-up latte before class? A latte that is socially responsible! House of Cards, located on the UniMelb Engineering Lane, is a coffee shop that is committed to giving back.

After ordering your beverage of choice, you are given a playing card which you can drop into one of four ‘cause’ categories - cultural, social, environmental, or health. At the end of the month, House of Cards makes financial donations based upon the distribution of cards in each cause box. What’s more, House of Cards ensures their coffee beans are sourced and produced in the most environmentally sustainable way. So, get on down and try one of their delicious guilt-free blends!

CARTE CREPES

If you follow the UniMelb Love Letters page, you’ve likely seen a post about Carte Crepes and their amazing staff (and food, of course). Located near Arts West and the John Medley building, Carte Crepes serves nearly every flavour of crepe you could possibly imagine. From salted caramel to passionfruit and melted white chocolate, there is something for everyone. Of course, it wouldn’t be quite complete without barista-made coffee and T2 teas.

If you’ve got time on your hands between classes, head on over for a delicious, reasonably priced snack to satisfy that sweet tooth. Don’t forget to present your M-ASS membership card at checkout for $$ off!

HOHO’S CANTEEN

If you’re in the mood for a cheap yet delicious meal, look no further than HoHo’s! With a wide variety of zaccacias, Middle Eastern pastries, baguettes, falafel, bagels, and more - UniMelb students are guaranteed a hearty meal to fuel their brains and bodies before and after classes. Once again, no cafe on campus would be complete without a hefty coffee and drinks menu. Whether it be eating in or taking away, Hoho’s provides every customer with a generous portion and low cost. Now that’s an experience to smile about!

Picture this: It’s 4:30pm, you’ve just come off a long day of procrastinating assignments and pestering fellow students in your tute to give you the lowdown on this week’s readings that you’ve inevitably avoided.

All this procrastination has caused an unquenchable thirst, so you message all your newfound friends the most simple message possible… “Pub?” But… What do you do? And where do you actually go?!

Luckily for you, your M-ASS friends have spent many years honing their knowledge of the pub, just to give you the most foolproof guide imaginable.

Just footsteps away from Uni, the PA’s rooftop is perfect for the quick after-class summer evening beverage with those new friends from O-Week and Arts Camp! However, as the name suggests, it does come with the price of a ‘prince’, with a jug of the sweet liquid nectar setting you back well over $20.

Named (unofficially) after the infamous M-ASS President Edward Clyde Biggins, the Clyde is located a stone’s throw away from uni. The most well known, and often the crowd-favourite of uni pubs.

The perfect place to go for an after-tute drink, only to find yourself at the nearby intersection cafe in search of a HSP at 1am… Slums has $6 pizzas, $8 pints, and some of the best value cocktails in town, including the house favourite, liquid gold (ask for one and you shall find out what the drink entails…). Slums is home - enough said!

QB can sometimes be described as the Canberra of University pubs - with the convenience of being located on the Swanston tram line, a class outdoor beer garden and a decent food menu, it’s not a bad place to go after a rough day at uni.

Located in the middle of Union House on campus, the IDA bar is UMSU’s form of giving back those pesky SSAF fees through the gift of cheap pints and elite jaffles. The IDA bar is also the midpoint of the famous “Goon, Schoon, IDA bar and Croom’’ game, and is a one-stop shop for a quick afternoon drink before kicking on or heading home.

Come for the Irish Vibes, stay for the curry chips - this cute little classic Irish bar is the ideal place for a pint of Guinness, Kilkenny, or a Beef and Guinness Pie. However, the best part of The Last Jar is their world famous curry sauce chips. chips Simply hot chips with some curry sauce and melted cheese, these bad boys are game changers and will give you the ultimate foodgasm.

Prosh is ………………It is also the best week of the university calendar, where teams compete for ………. , prestige, pleasure, and points. It’s a week full of silliness and shenanigans, focused on making new friends, clever arts and crafts, and testing your improvisation.

Prosh has been around since at least the 1960s. Inspired by ……………………… , it has become a treasured part of the university experience. Prosh is also all about giving back, and picks a charity every year to raise funds for. In previous years 2020, and 2021, the charity was Orange Sky: a mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness, founded by two Brisbane locals. You can usually gain points by donating blood, volunteering your time, ………………… , or getting vaccinated.

The best event of Prosh is …………………… , but there’s a huge array to choose from. Think billy cart races, a 24-hour scavenger hunt, trivia night, and some large-scale DIY constructions. Prosh allows you to be creative, adventurous, silly, slippery, delirious, inventive (and the list goes on), but we don’t want you doing anything you’re not comfortable with. Absolutely everything is optional, and you’re only encouraged to do as many events as you’d like. While you can win points, the real win is the experience, memories, and friends you make along the way.

M-ASS is in no way affiliated with Prosh, but you will find a big team erected in honour of our good pal, Artie Prime: Artie’s Angels. With TWO TROPHIES under our belt, the inaugural 2018 win followed by the absolute shock win of 2021, AA is a great place to begin your Prosh experience (and meet some M-ASS alumni as your judges…). @artiesangels

ARTS CRUISE We all know everyone loves a good boogie, but imagine a party… on... WATER. Climb aboard and go for a leisurely trip around the bay at the Annual M-ASS Cruise. Past themes have included Snooze Cruise, The Boat That Rocked (decades theme!), and many more - it’s a guaranteed epic night for shore!

MAX PARTY SWOTVAC and Exams can be some of the most stressful times you will have in your uni career. However, as soon as they are over, M-ASS are here and ready to party with a vengeance. The M-ASSive After eXams Party (MAX) brings those post-exam holiday vibes, sick DJs, and epic drink deals to finish off the semester in the right way!

PUB NIGHTS Pub - arguably one of the best parts of the uni week! What’s even better is M-ASS’ frequent pub nights that allow everyone to meet up, sink a few bevvies, make some new friends, and hang about for general tomfoolery. There is also always plenty of good tunes and boogie-ing into the night, probably to the dulcet tones of Gimme Gimme Gimme (we are Arts kids after all).

PAINT ‘N‘ GLOW Imagine the Gossip Girl annual White Party, but messier and WAY more fun. At our one-of-a-kind Paint ‘n’ Glow party in Sem 1, unleash your inner Picasso by smearing UV paint all over your mates while having a boogie on the D-floor. Find some white clothes that you’re not emotionally attached to, because you’re everyone’s canvas that night. Grab your mates and come get messy!

Amongst all the fabulous events that M-ASS runs, one stands out as the highlight of the year for many.

Our annual themed Arts Ball is a night to remember - with free-flowing drinks, a three course sit down meal, endless dancing, a FREE ticket to the after party, and plenty of memories to be made!

You’ll enter the venue dressed to the nines after a classy ‘pres’ with friends, grab a complimentary drink and hit the D-floor. After dancing your heart out, you’ll take a seat at your table and enjoy your meal (which you most likely will swap with the person sitting next to you). With a little more eating and a lot more dancing, this portion of the night will draw to a close… but it’s not over yet! You’ll board a party bus with the other ball-goers and head to the next venue for our after party - which promises to bring immaculate vibes and excellent tunes.

Whether you’re riding solo or coming with a large group, there’s always room for you at the table - feel free to bring a friend from another degree or university too. We can’t wait to share this epic night with you very soon, see you on the dance floor!

As a BA student, you’ll write many essays, which may seem kinda daunting, but here are some tips that will help you achieve those H1s ;) Start with researching and building solid notes that help you understand your topic. From there you can use those sources to map out your argument and figure out your stance/thesis.

For referencing, the university websites ‘Recite’ and ‘UniMelb Library’ are your besties. Your essay’s referencing style will be specified by your tutor or the subject-guide on Canvas. For this, Recite is super helpful as it was created by UniMelb, and has detailed and understandable information about each style.

Most essays will require ‘peer-reviewed’ sources which can be difficult to find. However, the library website provides a ‘peer reviewed journals’ option on the left-hand side which means that the articles that appear in your search are all academically sound and usable.

Don’t be scared to ask your tutors questions and send emails, they are happy to help! When your essay’s due date is approaching, your tutors will leave a few minutes during tutes for assignment questions.

Remember, there’s probably another student wondering the same thing and will be grateful for you asking the question.

UniMelb has a fantastic range of welfare and support services which are provided by both the University faculties and the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU), relating to both mental and physical health and wellbeing.

UniMelb Services

The University offers free, confidential, and short-term professional counselling services to all students. These sessions can be booked online via the Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS) page. CAPS offers a wide range of free workshops discussing subjects such as settling in as an international student, mindfulness, anxiety, and communication.

UniMelb also offers bulk-billed doctors’ appointments for students with experienced doctors and nurses. The welfare of students is further supported by financial aid options, including student loans and advice and advocacy around Government student payments and grants. Additionally, UniMelb offers disability services such as alternative exam arrangements, equipment loans, assistive technology, and extensions to assignments. UMSU Services

UMSU offers comprehensive, free, and confidential advocacy services for students. This advocacy covers potential grievances, such as assessment disputes, special consideration, misconduct, discrimination, bullying, and others.

UMSU has also developed many community support departments with social events, support groups, and other resources, including for people with disabilities, Indigenous students, People of Colour, Queer people, and international students. Also, UMSU has a legal service which is available to all currently enrolled students. It provides free and confidential legal advice by qualified lawyers on various legal matters.

Hey Jaffys! Congrats on your admission into UniMelb and welcome to some of the best years of your life.

Each year, you pay this thing called the SSAF (Student Services Amenities Fee), and a part of it goes to funding the University of Melbourne Student Union, otherwise known as UMSU! UMSU is for students, by students. It’s integral to students’ lives because it’s the peak representative body for students at UniMelb. Some of the things we do include: free food, activism, advocacy, fun events, and of course the support of clubs and societies! UMSU is also one of the biggest student unions in the country, which makes it highly respected nationally. Pretty epic.

During the year, you’ll experience different things from UMSU, whether you’re active in the union or not. There are numerous departments in charge of different things, such as the Women’s, Activities, POC, Welfare, and more.

They hold events, collectives, campaigns, and activist spaces so every student can feel connected on campus. UMSU also has a legal and advocacy service that gives out free legal advice and advocacy in case things go wrong during your time at university. With us coming back to campus, we can expect more events including Bands, Bevs, and BBQ (BABBA anyone?).

The best part of all of this, is that becoming a member is free! Being a member of UMSU means that you get to actively support and back one of the greatest student unions. It also means you get first access to news and events, as well as to run in the student elections. Each September, UMSU holds their annual elections where you get to vote who represents you.

It’s also super easy to get involved. Keep an eye out during O-Week for UMSU’s expo, and during the semester for on campus and online events. Feel free to pop into Union House and knock on our door, we’re happy to help!

What even is a BA? Arts subjects are typically centered around the humanities - focusing on studies of people, cultures, and language. We research and learn how these things have developed, the impact they have on individuals and communities, and how they interact with each other to shape our world.

Good luck getting a job!

HA HA HA

Lazy. Unoriginal. Unfunny. Do better. Even if you don’t intend on going into a field directly related to your major, BA graduates are highly employable in general. This is thanks to our ability to analyse and interpret complex content, weigh evidence, write succinctly, carry out thorough research, and communicate clearly. These are all skills that are extremely desirable in workplaces, with recently graduated M-ASS members entering roles that include corporate marketing, federal policy writing, and social work.

Isn’t Arts pretty easy?

We WISH! A BA can require you to read and interpret dense and intricate literature (let me introduce you to Foucault and Bentham), formulate evidence based arguments, interpret statistics, and write at a higher standard than high school. Many Arts subjects are notoriously difficult to do well in, with the allusive H1 haunting the majority of the cohort.

You’ve got *ahem* superior taste buds if you like this iconic snack! Convenient to make in the Arts West kitchenette, it’s typically everyone’s no-brainer snack during study szn.

Let’s face it, our parents have most likely put a piece of fruit in our hands right as we’re walking out the door.

Pro tip: eat this in the morning before it goes rotten in your tote bag…

Up & Go is a quick and easy meal replacement if you’re running late to your 9am tute. Packed with protein, there are also vegan and higher protein options available.

Treat yourself to this classic snack!

There are plenty of vending machines scattered around campus if you’re feeling peckish, or, you can be everyone’s favourite, by bringing a family-sized bag of Doritos to the table…

snacks will NOT be needed EVERY SECOND THURSDAY because you will be at the M-ASS BBQ (*wink*)

Drop a slice of orange into a wine glass, add Aperol, fill the glass with ice, top with sparkling wine / prosecco, and finish with soda water.

Replace Aperol with orange juice and bitters, topping with only soda water!

Muddle lime wedges and mint leaves. Add rum, lime juice, and agave/sugar syrup. Fill glass with ice and top with soda. Add some mint sprigs on the top of the glass to garnish!

Q: What’s better than munching on a free cooked snag every second Thursday at South Lawn?

A: Eating a free and PERFECTLY cooked snag every second Thursday at South Lawn!

The art of cooking snags has been passed down from one BBQ rep to the next! With a bit of convincing, they’ve let us in on their top secret knowledge, RE: how to cook the PERFECT snag.

The most useful trick we know is the infamous sausage bounce test.

As weird as it may sound, by picking up your snags with tongs and letting them drop from approximately 10cm off the hot plate, you can get a rough idea if the snags are perfectly cooked. A raw snag will have minimal ‘bounce-age’, whereas a perfectly cooked snag will have a little jump to it, since it’s nice and firm. Try this out next time you are unsure if your snags are cooked properly ;) Our second tip is to ensure you always pay attention to the snags, as there is a fine line where a sausage can go from perfect, to well… uh… not-so perfect. This, alongside regular flipping, will make you the second-best snag cooker in the world!

M-ASS would love to see as many new faces as possible at our FREE fortnightly barbeques for M-ASS members (South Lawn at 12pm). It’s a great way to meet new people and get involved with arguably the best society at UniMelb!
