BIG GROUP HUG Community Help for Families in Need Big Group Hug’s mission is to mobilise community support to respond to the immediate needs of young people, particularly vulnerable children and their families.

We do this by providing free material aid essentials for children aged newborn to 16 years – items of absolute necessity including toiletries, clothing, books, formula, nappies, car seats, prams, and bedding – through our extensive network of welfare agencies and community organisations.

The families we support are living in financial crisis due to family conflict, underemployment or unemployment, homelessness, or seeking refuge. They are often forced to choose between providing their children warm clothing and safe bedding, or a hot meal. Our aid packs have an average value of $1,085 equivalent to 3 weeks rent, three to four weeks of groceries, or one year of gas or electricity, alleviating substantial financial stress.

We are honoured to be supported by individuals and businesses who are committed to donating financially and with new or preloved material items; supporting our families through the upcycling, recycling, and rehoming of preloved items, reducing landfill and the environmental damage caused by waste.

A letter from our Founder As I reflect on the growth of Big Group Hug over the last nine years, I am filled with hope for the future. It has been so exciting to see the continued journey and growth of our small charity – from modest beginnings in my living room to closing the chapter on our first warehouse in Bundoora to the move to our larger home in Thomastown.

I am delighted that we have continued to divert enormous amounts from landfill whilst providing essential material aid to families in need. To see my vision for Big Group Hug come to fruition, has been heartwarming beyond description.

Incredibly, next year marks 10 years of Big Group Hug, and our growth and future would not be possible without the commitment of donors and welfare agencies in the community and ongoing support and personal sacrifice of the countless volunteers, it’s this incredible group of people who are the backbone of Big Group Hug. Alongside our board, I have been focused on the future strategic direction and governance of the organisation. Together we have taken Big Group Hug to new heights, helping more children than ever before.

To all our supporters, donors, welfare agencies, my fellow Directors, the Big Group Hug team, and selfless volunteers, I am so grateful for all that you do. And to our families who care for their little ones no matter what, thank you for letting us share in your journey.

A letter from our Chair I am honored to serve as the Chair of the Board for Big Group Hug. Together, we have not only delivered on our strategic plan but exceeded expectations. Our collective efforts have made a tangible difference in the lives of thousands of families and for that, I am immensely proud. It is due to the dedication of all of the volunteers, donors, and supporters that we have achieved our goals and remained steadfast in our mission.

As we look to the future, I am excited to work towards expanding our reach by establishing more hubs in communities that need our support. This strategic growth will enable us to make an even greater impact and reach those who may have otherwise been left without assistance.

Next year Big Group Hug will be celebrating its 10th anniversary – a milestone that is a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. We will use this occasion to reflect on our achievements, honour our history, and look forward to a future filled with even greater promise.

Once again, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all of you. Your dedication and passion are the driving force behind our success, and I am confident that, together, we will continue to make a positive difference in the lives of countless individuals and communities.

A letter from our CEO I am overwhelmed with gratitude and pride as I look back on the past year. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you - our dedicated supporters, passionate volunteers, and the remarkable team that has made our achievements over the last 12 months possible.

We have continued to make a meaningful impact on the lives of over 6,000 children, supporting more families than ever before in our communities. We’ve taken significant strides towards reducing our environmental footprint, saving over 100 tons from landfill, fostering a healthier planet for future generations.

This year was an exciting one in many ways.

We commenced our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan, representing our commitment to our ongoing efforts to create positive change. It embodies our dedication to fostering respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples communities, promoting cultural understanding, and addressing the unique challenges they face. Through this plan, we aspire to make a lasting impact, both within our organization and in the wider community.

We marked a significant milestone as we celebrated 12 months at our Sustainability Hub in Airport West. The hub has allowed us to expand our reach and engage with more community members, across Melbourne.

None of these achievements would have been possible without the commitment, support, and dedication of our incredible volunteers, and the hard work of our talented team.

As we move forward, we remain committed to our mission, never losing sight of the families and children who rely on our aid.

This year one of our longest-serving board members, Geraldine Camilleri, has resigned from the board. Geraldine has made an outstanding contribution to the work of Big Group Hug and we honour and and thank her for the countless hours and tireless effort she has contributed over this time.

Geraldine joined the journey of Big Group Hug from its inception in 2014, working alongside its founder, Angela. They first met when Geraldine made a donation directly to Angela’s home, and their shared vision to help families

in need cemented their partnership. Geraldine’s grant-writing expertise and business skills were instrumental in the charity’s growth. Together, Angela and Geraldine were a force to be reckoned with as they transformed the charity from a modest garage operation into a thriving volunteerrun, for purpose organisation. For nine years, Geraldine’s dedication and guidance played a pivotal role in Big Group Hug’s success.

We thank Geraldine for her nine years of service, passion, guidance and dedication to Big Group Hug, and her continued support of our work.

JANE’S STORY Meet Jane*, a single parent facing considerable challenges head-on. Her days revolve around caring for her three children, each navigating varying degrees of Autism.

Jane’s journey is a testament to her determination, where she battles daily not only for her children’s well-being but also her own mental health, all while contending with the looming threat of family violence.

Amidst these trials, Jane’s youngest, four-yearold Sarah*, faced an immediate need for warmer clothing as the cooler season approached. She had grown out of the previous years’ winter clothing and Jane didn’t have the funds needed to purchase winter clothing for Sarah.

Jane’s support worker reached out to Big Group Hug for assistance. We were able to respond quickly ensuring that her family not only received the essentials but also those special extras that our volunteers provide—the touches that add hope, delight, and happiness to their lives.

In her clothing pack, Sarah also found a beautiful mermaid fancy dress costume, allowing her to partake in the excitement of book week at her daycare alongside her friends. This moment of joy and connection shows us the power of community support, and the care shown by Big Group Hug’s selfless volunteers when packing her request.

Beyond clothing, our aim is to alleviate the everyday burdens that can weigh heavily on families like Jane’s, and to act when they need it most.

Support Worker: Zali, Neami National “Every time I make a Big Group Hug delivery, I think about how this has made life just that little bit easier for the child’s parents in terms of expenses, but also the gift of toys and personal hygiene goods. Toys bring joy, and connectedness to families; they develop children cognitively, creatively and emotionally and help us all remember what is good about life. The packs often have lovely personal care products for the parents, these are often luxuries that are gone without; they are so valuable in helping a parent remember to care for themselves and feel worthy.

As a firsthand partner in helping families in need, I’m seeing an increase in need for teenage clothing and shoes. Given children go through such rapid growth spurts, often families with younger children receive goods and older kids miss out- that can be hard.

The best thing about Big Group Hug is the ease of application, the quality of the clothing and those lovely cloth bags the toys come in and of course the kindness of the people who work and volunteer there. The best part about all of it though is seeing the gratefulness of the families who received your wonderful goods.

Apart from providing children and babies with the necessities in terms of clothing, nappies and accessories, it’s so much more - it’s about the quality of the goods which shows respect and helps build esteem and dignity; it’s the untold joy that a delivery of toys or personal care products bring all of which build well-being and improve lives.

Big Group Hug is such an accommodating partner to work with. Everything is easy and automated – making collection easy and delivery a delight.”

OUR IMPACT & PERFORMANCE

In FY23, we supported over 280 Melbourne families per month, through our network of 130+ welfare agencies; delivering 120,000+ material aid items for an average of 500 children per month. This represented a 41% increase in material aid requests to families with 8-day average request fulfillment, with most (70%) being filled within 5 days.

Big Hug Group saw a consistent increase in the overall number of requests from families on FY22.

Our stock at hand is dictated by the quantity of items donated by the community, or funded through philanthropic grants which can lead to stock fluctuations, particularly for some of our high demand items such as toiletries. The generosity of donors throughout the year and participants in our goods drive activities such as Winter Warmers, PJs, Jocks and Socks and Festive Season goods drives are vital to maintaining stock levels through the year.

Enhancing Sector Efficiencies through Collaborative Initiatives Operating efficiently as a business, and a sector, is important to us. Through our relationships with like-minded aid agencies, we can share resources and reduce duplication.

When fellow Sustainability Victoria Grant recipient Loved & Shared Warnambool reached out for advice, we welcomed their Executive Officer, Jaimee Millar, to volunteer with us for a few days, diligently studying our operational processes.

The objective was to leverage these insights to optimise their own operations in preparation for the launch of their new warehouse.

Both Loved & Shared and Big Group Hug share a common commitment to building a supportive community that provides high-quality material aid to children and families facing adversity. This collaboration has resulted in the provision of Big Group Hug’s surplus stock, extending our reach to a broader geographical area.

Big Group Hug received 3,378 requests from families across 245 suburbs. The Airport West Hub has provided a great geographical reach, allowing us to provide essential aid to more children and families each year.

We understand the importance of community support and working with sister charities across Victoria. In the wake of the flooding in Northern Victoria in October 2022, we reached out to Sunshine Bendigo a community-based, volunteer group that provides practical support to families experiencing challenging times in the Central Victoria region. Together we provided emergency material aid, alleviating some of the stress affected families were facing.

We also supported 23 families who reported as homeless, 70 who were in a refuge, 8 unknowns and 15 who preferred not to disclose their whereabouts.

LAUREN’S STORY Lauren* and her husband, Jake*, were struggling to make ends meet. They had put their hearts and souls into their two businesses, but the pandemic had stripped them of their livelihoods. They were left with nothing but bills to pay and a search for a new career. Then, Lauren found out she was pregnant.

The couple had always dreamed of starting a family, Lauren knew from a young age she wanted to be a mum. But now they were filled with fear and uncertainty. They had already eaten through their savings, and with no job and no income, they didn’t know how they were going to afford all the things their baby would need. It was a scary time for the couple.

One day, Lauren received a call from the local church who knew that Lauren and Jake were struggling and had submitted a request for aid to Big Group Hug, “I knew preparing for a baby would be overwhelming,” said Lauren. With no more savings and no income, getting ready for a baby was stressful. Lauren was overcome with emotion. “I don’t know what we would have done” she said.

“The help of the church and Big Group Hug really took a load off”.

When they arrived at the church to collect what they thought would be a small box of things for their unborn baby, Lauren and Jake were brought to tears as they unpacked all the items inside. It was like a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds of their despair. “The quality of everything from Big Group Hug was incredible. And the amount. I didn’t expect to receive so much”.

Lauren received everything they needed for their baby, from nappies and wipes to a cot and pram, clothes and blankets. Now they had what they needed to give their new baby the best start in life.

“When I met Lauren*, life was extremely difficult for her and her partner after losing their business, falling pregnant and having a loved one pass away all during COVID. They were struggling, so I asked Big Group Hug if they could put together a package for their baby – which they did. That child is now 9 months old and a healthy, happy little boy. Lauren was very grateful to receive the support as at the time they had to live with her parents as things were getting tight.

Big Group Hug does amazing work helping families in need. With the cost of living going up and the resultant drain on family resources, I can only imagine the level of demand has greatly increased and will continue to do so. Money, food & housing are some of the greatest needs I am confronted with in my role as community pastor. I know Big Group Hug have increased their capacity in response to these growing needs.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

SCRgroup This year Big Group Hug forged a valuable partnership with SCRgroup, further expanding our capacity to make a positive impact in the community. Through this collaboration, a program was trialed in the City of Port Phillip through Thread Collect; an on demand pick up service for clothing and household items. SCRgroup collcted from residents and then delivered the goods we needed most, directly to our warehouse in Bundoora.

Each year, SCRgroup diverts over 30 million kilograms of clothing from landfill, giving

them a second life in communities where they are needed most – making SCRgroup the perfect partner for Big Group Hug. Media coverage by Reid Butler celebrated this partnership and highlighted the organisation’s commitment to its mission.

Hobsons Bay Donation Day In June we partnered with Hobson’s Bay City Council for a special pop-up donation day aimed at making it easier for residents to support vulnerable families. Hobson’s Bay residents could donate their pre-loved children’s items to Big Group Hug, right in their neighbourhood. We received a very generous amount of children’s hardware and clothing, paving the way for future collaborations.

Circonomy & Moose Toys Circonomy and Moose Toys partnered to launch a pilot initiative aimed at promoting sustainable toy management among residents in Melbourne’s northern region. The collaborative effort encouraged local families to responsibly declutter their toys – old or new, as well as broken toys, through a designated toy take-back program at Northland Shopping Centre.

Residents were encouraged to bring toys they have either outgrown, no longer function, or those they wish to pass on as gifts. Circonomy sorted through the collected toys and those deemed suitable for rehoming were generously donated to Big Group Hug. Others were either safely repaired, or sustainably recycled, thereby avoiding unnecessary materials ending up in landfill.

UPCYCLING

Our contribution to the circular economy extends to pre-loved sheets, pillow slips and fabric that would otherwise go into landfill. We have a team of clever volunteers who repurpose these everyday items into bibs, pram liners, toy and toiletry bags – a sustainable and creative way of reducing the need for new materials. Upcycling embodies the spirit of innovation and sustainability, turning something old into something new and functional, while reducing our carbon footprint.

THE FUTURE Closing the Chapter on Bundoora

Our 5-year tenancy in Bundoora came to an end as we prepared to move to our new HQ in July. Our final year at Bundoora was marked by a flurry of activity. We partnered with some incredible organisations, received marvelous support from the media and successfully delivered our biggest giving day to date – all while trying to find a new home!

Our search for a new HQ received significant media attention, thanks in large part to Carolyn Webb at The Age, who covered the exhaustive warehouse search that culminated in the selection of our new headquarters at Thomastown.

As we look forward to our upcoming 10-year anniversary, our future will be guided by the invaluable insights and support provided by Data4Good, ensuring that Big Group Hug continues to provide for children in need.

THE GROWING NEED The increased need for aid in our community has become more apparent than ever. As the challenges of financial hardship, domestic violence, refugee support, unemployment, and various other difficulties continue to affect the lives of many, the demand for assistance has surged. We recognise that to effectively meet this growing need, our organisation must expand its reach and capacity.

HOLLY’S STORY “When my son was nearly one, we experienced family violence and child services became involved. I had to leave. I didn’t know where to go or who to talk to. It was a really overwhelming time.”

I felt as though now I could tackle these other really stressful things. Having that support allowed us to improve our situation. It was the pivotal point for moving forward. I felt like I had the essentials that we needed to build a stable life.”

At a young age, Holly found herself pregnant. Her world turned upside down in an instant. Her family were unable to accept her situation, leaving Holly without a support system.

Despite the pain, abandonment and isolation she felt, she found the strength to rise above her circumstances and enroll to study. “The support I received was the pivotal point for moving forward and building a more stable life. I’m so grateful for Big Group Hug and the other services that helped us.”

She moved into the family home of the father of her child. Shortly before her son’s first birthday, things became tumultuous and child services became involved. Holly had to leave.

With nowhere to turn, Holly sought help from various sources, but obstacles seemed to block her path at every turn. She was still classified as a dependent person, not yet 21 and as such was deemed ineligible for government funding without a guarantor. Survival mode became her constant companion as she pursued every avenue available to her. She was determined to give her son the life he deserved.

This support had such a profound impact on Holly, she was compelled to give back. Holly is now one of Big Group Hug’s hardworking and selfless volunteers, packing and sorting material aid, with the love and care that was put into her aid pack. “My story is not just about me; it’s about the countless others who face similar struggles.

Together, we can make a difference.”

In her darkest hour, Orange Door reached out to Big Group Hug on her behalf and a request for aid was made. To Holly’s surprise, assistance arrived in the form of a cot and some much-needed clothing for her one-year-old baby.

“I received a cot, clothing and some other items from Big Group Hug and it was the biggest relief.

Big Group Hug is incredibly grateful for the dedication of our 350 steadfast volunteers... ...who play an integral role in our daily operations, including scores of schools, youth groups and workplaces.

Collectively, they generously contributed 26,000 hours of their time to support our mission.

Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation, from collecting items within their communities, to sorting, cleaning, and packing donations. Some drive our vans and others assist in preparing and writing grant applications. Their dedication is what fuels the continued success of our charity.

2023 JagaJaga Community Volunteer Award – Katherine Freiberg Katherine Frieberg who has volunteered with Big Group Hug since 2018, received the ‘2023 JagaJaga Community Volunteer Award’. The award, presented by Kate Thwaites MP, recognises the efforts of individuals who selflessly volunteer their time and effort to make our community a better place. And Kat certainly does that!

Inaugural Ambassador – Jacinta D’Angelo

Congratulations Kat!

In November we appointed Big Group Hug’s inaugural ambassador; Jacinta D’Angelo. Jacinta first connected with Big Group Hug as mum fleeing a family violence situation and needing aid. She has turned the tide and is a committed supporter of Big Group Hug, passionate about improving the lives of children and families to ensure the best possible outcomes for their future.

And she got right to work! Jacinta spoke at various partner events through the year including at the International Women’s Day Breakfast hosted by sister charity, Caroline Chisholm. She shared her story and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

COMMUNITY IN ACTION For the Kids On 8 October 2022, long time supporter Gerri, Debra and Jess hosted a fundraising lunch in support of Big Group Hug at Old England Hotel, Heidelberg. Like all good luncheons there was a raffle, silent auction and door prizes. A warm, joyous afternoon was spent among friends raising funds for a special cause helping kids through their local charity, both which benefited our charity.

Over the first week of December, EthicalJobs.com.au matched all donations made to Big Group Hug to the value of $7,000, resulting in an astounding $16,295 raised to support our families!

Stavros is another long time supporter of ours. In 2023 he set himself a new fundraising challenge: Running a half marathon (21km) every 4 hours for 48 hours (including through the night!) clocking up a total of 252km! In June battling a chest and sinus infection, Stavros completed 180km, 2600 push ups and 36 mins of plank time, on only 3.5 hours sleep over 48 hours.

NIDO EARLY SCHOOL AIRPORT WEST The generous Nido Early School community rallied together, collecting essential items and toys for the 2022 Festive Campaign, Gifts of Hope. The delivery of these donations to Airport West was beyond adorable. Welcomed by founder Angela Wood, who was visiting Airport West at the time, the children donned their high vis and learned a valuable lesson in giving. We just know that having these children in our corner, the future is bright.

Giving Heroes The Funding Network is the largest collective giving model in Australia. Since 2013, they have brought together 20,000+ people to help raise over $22 million for over 500 non-profits and social enterprises. We we’re fortunate enough to be a chosen charity for the 2023 live crowdfunding event.

IN THEIR WORDS ELTHAM COLLEGE

Eltham College began our relationship with Big Group Hug in 2016 when our Year 11 Coordinator at the time was looking for somewhere to donate her children’s baby clothes to a place that would have a direct benefit for families in need.

From late 2016 our year 10-12 students were welcomed into the Rosanna Church Hall where they had real experience of what is involved in running a charity and have been involved in sorting and cleaning of donations, creating clothing, stationery and toiletries packs and at times being able to assist with requests.

For our students Big Group Hug has been a welcoming place where students know their time is valued and makes a difference. Many fond memories were had of using pressure washers and being involved in the Toy Donation Christmas Drive of 2016/2017. It is wonderful to know that several students have gone on to be regular volunteers after they have finished school as they have been able to learn about ‘making a difference’ to their local community in such a hands-on and meaningful way.

As Big Group Hug has continued to expand and evolve firstly in Bundoora and through the more recent move to Thomastown Eltham College has been proud to be associated with such a wonderful organisation.

We are fortunate to have many schools and youth groups partner with Big Group Hug. Working together, we are educating the next generation about sustainability, community involvement and lending a helping hand to those in need. By volunteering their time, they are learning that kindness has no limits and that their actions can make a real difference in someone’s life. Schools have a big role to play in nurturing shaping a generation of caring and understanding individuals.

And together, we’re paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS “I have found through my time at the school that the service is an awesome way to get involved within the community and hear inspiring stories from the people within it, including stories shared at our nights in the Big Group Hug warehouse. STAR OF THE SEA An incredible group of Year 9 students conducted a winter warmers donation drive and then dedicated an entire day to join volunteers in the warehouse. Together, they sorted and packed material aid boxes filled with essential items for children in need.

After a hiatus in 2022, our annual giving day returned and was held on 17 May 2023. For one day only, all financial donations were matched by a group of very generous people who share our vision of working together to protect every young person from the adverse effects of disadvantage.

Together with our incredible partners at Money3, we set up shop in our Call Centre for the day and the telethon began.

Big Group Hug staff and volunteers together with staff from Money3 spent the day on the phone, making calls to supporters in an attempt to surpass the 2021 final tally of $84,000.

Only two hours in and we had raised $64,206, only $20,000 off the 2021 total. We were humbled by our community’s response and inspired to work harder for our recipients.

At 12.00pm the total was $70,366 and before we knew it, we had hit the $100,000 milestone! Celebrations aplenty, we soldiered on and at 7.00pm we had reached our target of $150,000. The momentum wasn’t slowing, our incredible supporters kept reaching into their hip pockets! Inspired by the incredible response from our community, new matchers approached us with some additional funding – so we upped the ante and increased our target to $185,000.

As the night drew to a close, and the timer ticked over, we ended the day at $199,788. The matched funding ended at midnight on May 17, but some further donations came through in the days following, taking the final tally to an astonishing $203,240.

We are overwhelmed with the astounding support we received from the incredible Big Group Hug community on Double Donation Day. To more than double to total from 2021 was incredible. So many children in Victoria benefitted from this collective effort.

BUSINESS IN ACTION 1000Club

In April 2023 Big Group Hug launched the 1000Club, an exclusive club that unites businesses and individuals committed to creating a positive impact and supporting struggling families. The 1000Club presents a unique opportunity to make a lasting difference. It aims to provide essential material aid to children facing hardship for generations to come, ensuring a strong foundation for every child.

SPOTLIGHT ON Goods Drives Our annual festive campaign had a rebrand in 2022.

Reverse Advent Calendar became Gifts of Hope and it was a great success – we received over 4,900 items.

We were blown away by the generosity of our supporters and during donation drop off conversations we learned that some organisations chose to forgo Kris Kringle and instead donated gifts.

We also heard from young children who handpicked items for those less fortunate and some even shared their own pocket money for the cause. These stories not only warmed our hearts but showcased what an amazing and generous community we have.

By joining the 1000Club, members can make a lasting impact on struggling families by making a regular contribution of just $83 a month, or an annual payment of $1000. These contributions will directly support Big Group Hug’s efforts to provide essential aid to families in need, ensuring that future generations have access to essential resources. With one in six children in Australia currently living in poverty, the need for support has never been more crucial.

Swim Schools Bundoora, expressed his motivation in becoming a member of 1000Club. “I wanted a way to give back,” he said “and the 1000Club is a great initiative to support the local community.” Chris’ commitment sets an inspiring example for others to follow, demonstrating the power of collective action in making a difference.

The 2023 PJ’s Jocks and Sock campaign focused on collecting new PJs, underwear and socks for children aged 2-16, plus singlets for newborns to teenagers. Arguably one of our most successful campaigns each year, 2023 was no different. We received 11,191 new sleepwear and underwear items for children in need.
