MSFIN provides quality, new and recycled goods for the whole family.

MSFIN works with over 80 welfare agencies to provide material aid support for families in crisis. They do not liaise directly with families; this is to ensure that families in need are provided with professional and holistic support from trained support workers.

Big Group Hug Community support for vulnerable children

Big Group Hug (BGH) redistributes donated goods (including clothing, blankets, prams and cots) to underprivileged families within local communities to tackle the serious issue of childhood poverty.

BGH utilise social media and their volunteer network to mobilise people to put out a call to donate urgently needed items. These donated items are then checked, sorted and distributed directly to families through Maternal and Child Health Workers and other community welfare agencies.

BGH create opportunities for volunteers and their support base to positively, immediately and directly impact the lives of other families experiencing hardship and contribute to the creation of socially inclusive communities that work together to support all children in their early years.

TS4A

Team Sports 4 All TS4A help provide involvement in community team sport for families who are going through financial and/or social hardship.

Families are referred via community services organisations and schools. TS4A pay for their registration fees and uniform costs but more importantly offer ongoing support via their volunteer sports mentors to encourage long term involvement in sport.

TS4A currently assists over 100 children to play sport who otherwise would not be able to. They are established in Bayside and in 2020 commenced taking on families in Stonnington with the future plan to set up TS4A in as many municipalities as possible so they can make team sport accessible to all families no matter their circumstances.

Empowering people with Dementia Umbrella Dementia Café (UDC) coordinates regular social catch-ups to empower people living with Dementia to regain autonomy and improve their self-esteem and wellbeing. UDC’s catchups also enrich connections between people with Dementia, their carers and their families.

Rumbalara FNC Dungala Kaiela Foundation

Dungala Kaiela Foundation aims to support initiatives that will empower First Nations people in the Dungala Kaiela region to achieve prosperity. Dungala Kaiela supports a meaningful set of initiatives focused on employment, education, health and well-being. Each of these programs incorporate cultural identity and affirmation.

The Dungala Kaiela Future Fund to provide financial support for the educational, employment, parenting and cultural programs initiated by Rumbalara Football Netball Club. These programs provide pathways to a better future.

The fund does not support the sporting club.

The value of these initiatives was quantified by an academic study from La Trobe University that concluded $1 invested generates $5.45 return in social value.

Helping Hoops Breaking down barriers one basket at a time

Helping Hoops (HH) provides free community-based youth basketball programs to instil values and skills that benefit participants in their everyday lives.

Children and young people attending Helping Hoops programs may come from migrant or refugee backgrounds, living in inner-city public housing estates, have an intellectual disability or special needs, or may be socioeconomically disadvantaged in some way.

DVR

Derwent Valley Railway Preservation Society The Derwent Valley Railway Preservation Society was established in 1990 to attempt to reinstate steam train travel along the Derwent Valley railway line between New Norfolk and Mt Field National Park. This not-for-profit, volunteer-based organisation is working closely with the state government to resume the service as a major tourist attraction for the region.

In December 2021, the state government provided DVR with a lease to operate on 500m of line in-between Third Ave and Back River Rd. Plans are to re-commence operation to the public in Q3 2022. The Derwent Valley railway line, from New Norfolk to Mt Field National Park, links many tourism operators in the valley.

They’re committed to the re-establishment of the railway which will enable larger numbers of visitors to experience the valley and its rail heritage.

Chill Out & Look About Road safety awareness

The Chill Out & Look About initiative aims to improve road safety awareness for all road users. The initiative honours the memory of Dylan Briggs, who tragically died while riding his bike home from school in March 2020. It was created by his family and group of classmates at Frankston High School.

Their superhero logo was a simple idea that was important to Sarah-Jane – Dylan’s mum. Dylan loved Marvel and DC characters (particularly “The Flash”) and Sarah-Jane wanted Dylan’s legacy to be associated with him being a superhero. Dylan’s last gift was one of organ donation and through that he has saved lives. A true hero!

“The logo and emblem will be synonymous to Dylan being ‘on watch’ – looking out for everyone’s safety. He would have loved that. The design of the character was modelled on an actual photo of him.”

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids Children are often placed urgently into foster care with nothing more than the clothes on their back.

B4VK provide a free backpack full of essential items to aid displaced children and restore their dignity by showing that someone cares, well before any longterm arrangements have been made.

These backpacks and nappy bags are filled with essential items to help get displaced children through the first 48 hours of care. The packs include basic toiletries, clothing, pyjamas, a torch and extra love items such as soft toys, blankets and games to provide some comfort as they fall asleep in a stranger’s home.

Since 2015, they have supplied Victorian children with over 9,000 ‘My Essentials’ packs.

Story Dogs Making reading fun, so no child is left behind

Story Dogs aims to turn children with reading difficulties into confident life-long readers. ‘At risk’ 7-year-old students are introduced to a trained volunteer and their dog for an ongoing weekly reading session that is outside the classroom, relaxed and fun!

Reading sessions take place in a quiet area of the school grounds, such as the library or outside the classroom. A reading session is approximately 20 minutes long, where each child is one-on-one with the dog team. Books are chosen to suit the student’s reading level.

During the session, the handler often speaks through the dog, such as; “Sam doesn’t understand what is happening on this page, could you help him out?” The child becomes the teacher as they help the dog understand, and their confidence soars.

VicDRG

Victorian Dog Rescue & Resource Group Inc. VicDRG is a volunteer-led charity that rehomes dogs (and cats) that would not have lived if they’d been left in a pound or shelter. As strong advocates for responsible pet ownership, VicDRG does whatever is necessary (including training and specialised vet care) to find neglected animals a home where they’ll be loved.

No expense is spared to restore their rescued animals to health, even if it involves complex surgery. Every effort is made to retrain dogs and cats that have been unfortunate enough to have a neglected background.

VicDRG believe the respect and care they offer to their companion animals is how they should all be treated.

Foodbank Victoria

Foodbank Victoria (FBV) is Victoria’s largest food relief organisation. FBV sources surplus food from the nation’s leading food suppliers that would have otherwise gone to landfill. This food is then supplied to hundreds of frontline Charities (including The Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul as well as smaller charities such as Open Table, The Big Umbrella and Gippsland Farmer Relief), to feed more than 140,000 vulnerable Victorian’s each month.

From their facility in Yarraville, they distribute over 9.3m kilograms of food and grocery items each year to 533 charity partners across Victoria – supporting food relief programs including community pantries, mobile soup vans and emergency food hampers.

For every kilogram of food distributed by Foodbank, the social return on investment has been valued at $23. This means the impact of Foodbank’s work in the community is worth almost $1 billion annually. Despite their very best efforts, the food FBV supply is still not enough. That’s why they rely on the food and grocery sector as well as individuals, corporations, community groups and all levels of government to join the fight against hunger.

Feed Me

Geelong, Bellarine & Surf Coast Feed Me is a volunteer-led food rescue charity that turns leftover food into nutritious meals and delivers them to people in need across the Bellarine Peninsula under the motto ‘No Questions, No Agendas’.

Lana, owner of Belly Bowls and Bellarine Catering, saw how much food she was throwing out at the end of each day.

So, she started to package it up and distribute it to people in need.

Feed Me has now provided more than 300,000 meals to those in need.

A team of about 40 volunteers perform a range of tasks, such as admin, cooking, delivery and legal advice to help thousands of families in need each week.

Melbourne Salvos Project 614 Melbourne Salvos Project 614 care passionately about those who live on the fringes of society (people who are homeless, suffering mental health issues, affected by a range of addictions or suffering from social poverty). Led

by Major Brendan Nottle, support is provided by supplying meals, clothing and counselling to create pathways out of their current state of marginalisation (such as training, volunteering, employment and accommodation options).

The Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 is well aware of the struggles that some people can find themselves in and often through no fault of their own. Salvos 614 desire to make a difference in this situation in whatever way they can. Some of the ways Salvos 614 aim to help are by building relationships with people—being a family to those who don’t have a family or someone to talk with.

Sunbury Neighbourhood Kitchen The Sunbury Neighbourhood Kitchen (SNK) provides great food and companionship to the less fortunate of the Sunbury community. A team of volunteers use surplus food to provide about 150 people with a meal in a safe and friendly environment at the Sunbury Memorial Hall on a Monday evening.

SNK has been feeding those in need in the Sunbury community since 2013, is staffed and managed by volunteers and is completely non-profit.

SNK caters to the less fortunate of their local community with a team of over 50 volunteers that cook, wash dishes, set tables, transport residents to and from their homes, and some that just come to have a chat with those needing to be listened to.

Open Table

No waste cooking workshops Open Table is an emerging food relief charity with a strong focus on eliminating food waste. In addition to providing free community lunches, Open Table run No Waste Cook Club sessions to educate people on how to reduce household food waste.

The journey began in 2013 with a humble little community dinner at the Brunswick Neighbourhood House. The idea of ‘meeting our neighbours’ while reducing food waste quickly caught on. We soon grew to a network of pop-up lunches at various community spaces around Melbourne.

Gippsland Farmer Relief Inc. Supporting farmers in Gippsland

Gippsland Farmer Relief bring a rural perspective to providing assistance to farming families in need via a monthly food hamper. With many farmers being too proud to seek help via traditional food relief Charities, GFR offers a highly confidential and respectful food relief service that is easily accessible during difficult times (whether that be due to bushfires, floods or other challenges).

Gippsland Farmer Relief remained fully operational throughout Covid lockdowns and managed supply issues caused by early panic buying to ensure each hamper was packed with essential food staples.

GFR’s vision of providing regular farm household assistance, along with linking farming families to existing welfare and support services, remains front and centre of their efforts.

The Big Umbrella Food relief charity 100% run by volunteers

The Big Umbrella (TBU) is a dynamic emergency food relief charity providing assistance to vulnerable Victorians experiencing food insecurity and homelessness. TBU operates Melbourne’s only mobile soup kitchen and is agile enough to respond to natural disasters (floods, bushfires) within 24 hours in their mobile food truck.

TBU aspire to be totally self-sufficient with the introduction of an organic garden at their Brunswick facility to grow their own fresh produce for preparation in their commercial kitchen.

The charity is 100% run by volunteers so every dollar goes towards one of their programs. Plus, founder Justin Dickinson’s music industry connections enable TBU to donate unsold concert merchandise to clothe those in need.

John Foreman’s

Aussie Pops Orchestra

For over 40 years, John Foreman’s Australian Pops Orchestra (APO) has presented a unique blend of popular classical and contemporary music to Australian audiences and performed with some of the biggest names in the world.

Founded in 1980 with Kel McMillan at the helm, then continuing thanks to the magnificent work of David Ashton Smith OAM, Dr Chris Brendon and Ingrid Ross, the orchestra now carries on the traditions that have been put in place by wonderful people.

In 2019, Ingrid caught up with conductor John Foreman to discuss the future of the orchestra. Ingrid wanted to step aside from the APO but was keen that the legacy of the orchestra be maintained. John agreed to take the reins of the orchestra.

The orchestra excels in presenting exciting programs across a broad spectrum of popular music – from Bolero to the Beatles, Gershwin to Tchaikovsky, Strauss waltzes to the classic rhythms of Cole Porter or the haunting melodies of Andrew Lloyd-Webber.

Gippsland Art Gallery

Playing a vital role in arts & culture Host of the 2021 Archibald and Young Archies Portrait Prizes.

Gippsland Art Gallery’s permanent collection of artworks is one of the great cultural assets of the region.

Comprising over 3,000 items and valued at over $10 million, this significant collection documents the art of Gippsland and beyond. Since its establishment in 1965, the focus of the collection has been Gippsland and the natural environment.

Artworks range in materials from paintings, sculpture, photography, and printmaking, through to glass, ceramics, textiles, and woodwork. The collection has particular strengths in works on paper, landscape and wildlife art, craft (1960-1990) and contemporary painting (1990-present).

Heide Museum of Modern Art

Heide Museum of Modern Art began life in 1934 as the home of Melbourne couple John and Sunday Reed and has since evolved into one of Australia’s most important cultural institutions.

Amassing an outstanding collection of the contemporary art of their time, the Reeds outgrew their original farmhouse, now known as Heide I, and in 1963 commissioned the construction of a ‘gallery to be lived in’ from David McGlashan. This modernist architectural icon eventually opened as a public art museum in November 1981 following its purchase by the State Government on behalf of the people of Victoria.

Heide, located just twenty minutes from Melbourne’s CBD, is a unique combination of art, architecture, social history and landscape and regularly hosts special exhibitions, events and a craft market on the second Saturday of every month.

State Music Camp Victoria

State Music Camp hosts two five-day camps each year. The camps are highly regarded for their emphasis on orchestral music and music education.

They are also well known for the high standard and quality of the conductors, tutors, staff and managers who are involved in running the camp.

Volunteers who are passionate about orchestral music govern and manage the SMC. State Music Camp does not receive any grants or government assistance. The camp fee covers all the running costs.

Many past campers return each year to work alongside their friends and learn from expert tutors and conductors. The camp has a young and exciting feel and is operated in an atmosphere that is positive and engaging.

Amplified Victoria Formerly Girls Rock! Melbourne

Amplified Victoria aims to empower young female, trans, and gender diverse people aged 10 to 17 through music and education. They run several programs throughout the year for both youth and adults and are expanding their offerings all the time.

Amplified Victoria requires all mentors, organisers, band coaches, instrument instructors and workshop facilitators to be female, trans or gender diverse.

Multicultural Music Organisation Founded in 1979, this charity supports outstanding artists from diverse communities to promote understanding and appreciation of unique cultural musical experiences.
