FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, KMPA, the Kerala Master Printers’ Association, as part of its various efforts directed to help social causes, distributed funds as flood relief to its members and their families affected during recent devastating floods in the state.

Baroda based Patwa & Sons has installed Autoprint Blanking Machine 108-2H. Apart from meaning zero downtime for Patwa, the machine has enabled superfast process of blanking the cartons, which earlier being a manual process, took a lot of time & labour of them. “The cartons are more safe & undamaged, as while compared to the manual process where in the cartons might hold stains or could be torn sometimes etc.,” declares, Kunal Patwa, Director.

With the addition of MGI JETvarnish 3DS & iFOIL S to its portfolio, Bahubali Digiglam has significantly expanded its portfolio of printing services and is able to cater to evolving customer requirements.

Konica Minolta Business Solutions has recently installed the MGI JETvarnish 3DS & iFOIL S at Bahubali. Another Konica Minolta success story includes Bhiwandi-based Star Offset, Label Converter. It’s a story of its robust business growth with the Konica Minolta bizhub PRESS C71cf.

The largest deal to date for the HP Graphics packaging business, the new ePac order is estimated to be worth over $100 million, including hardware, supplies and services. HP has announced that ePac Flexible Packaging is purchasing 20 HP Indigo 20000 digital presses.

AIFMP president along with 200 colleagues attended the 7th All In Print China 2018. On October 25th, the organizers of All in Print China 2018 held the “India Day” & India Visitor Group Welcome Ceremony in SNIEC.During the event, President of AIFMP, gave a speech on the current situation of India printing industry and expressed his hope for further development of cooperation between China and India.

WAN-IFRA joined forces with a coalition of international organisations

to campaign for the adoption of a new UN Convention dedicated to the protection of media professionals. The initiative was launched by the International Federation of Journalists, with a Convention drafted by International Human Rights expert Carmen Draghici, Senior Lecturer in Law, City University in London.

QIPC Smart Pre-setting means new youth for old presses. A new Smart Pre-setting feature from QIPC-EAE is delivering on a promise to save an extra 150-200 copies with each press start-up. The latest development gives older presses a new lease of life and turns them into modern machines again. Further, Q.I. Press Controls expands activities in India. Kalptaru Offset, Natraj Print House, Saraswati Press, Hexagon Print & Pack and Sanat Printers are five new Indian partners with whom QIPC will collaborate. The Dutch specialist in measuring and control equipment for the printing industry supplies Indian printers with various mRC-3D systems for colour register control.

Cosmo Films has recently launched a metalized velvet lamination film for luxury packaging segment. At Labelexpo India, Esko will demonstrate ‘Labels Connected’ solutions. And, VINSAK will have multiple live machine demo’s at the show. It will display two 8-colour Lombardi Synchroline UV Flexo Presses, VINSAK USAR, VINSAK Table Top Rewinding machine and VINSAK Roll Lifter series. Asahi Photoproducts, exhibiting for the first time at Labelexpo India, will focus on quick, consistent and highest quality print with Asahi AWP water wash flexographic plates. Baldwin Vision Systems brings new Industry 4.0 connected workflow solutions.

In acquisitions and mergers, the key one is B.C. Jindal Group acquiring Treofan Europe. Konica Minolta India has joined hands with Chinabased Brotech Graphic. The association aims at sourcing accessories for the Konica Minolta AccurioPress 190 Label Press.

KMPA’s Cochin roadshow The association distributes funds to flood affected members and affected employees.

At a function by KMPA (Kerala Master Printers’ Association) organised at Hotel Renai Cochin on 13th October, flood relief funds were distributed to the association’s members and their employees.

Besides, the occasion marked a very informative road show conducted by Mr. Pradeep Saroha and team about the upcoming Label Expo 2018.

“It was truly a heart-warming programme with very good participation from members, their families and several employees from our fraternity,” says Biju Jose, Hon. Secretary, KMPA. Ernakulam District Collector K Mohammed Y. Safirulla, IAS, the Chief Guest for the evening, who played a very important role during the flood rescue and relief operations conducted by the government, graced the occasion with his presence. Mr. Safirulla handed over the funds on behalf of the association. KMPA distributed relief funds to 7 of its members who were badly affected by the floods and also to 157 employees of the printing fraternity whose homes were badly damaged in the deluge.

KMPA has always been at the forefront to help towards social needs. Till date KMPA has distributed nearly Rs. 23,00,000/- to its members and employees.

The Association had earlier distributed an interim relief to 10 of its members immediately after the tragedy struck. Till date KMPA has distributed nearly

Another highlight of the evening was KMPA’s generous contribution to the Chief Ministers Distress Relief fund. KMPA President Mr. R. Gopakumar handed over a cheque for Rs.2,50,000/- to Mr. Safirulla as a contribution towards the rebuilding process of Kerala.

KMPA has always been at the forefront to help towards social needs. The notebook distribution drive to school students affected by the floods is an example of such an activity. KMPA donated more note books to such students during the Cochin event. In a symbolic gesture the District collector handed over a few books on behalf of KMPA to Mr. Suresh, winner of the Best Teacher Award 2018 – Kerala State. Mr.

KMPA received generous contributions from several of its members, friends of members, various other individuals, fellow print Associations, manufacturers and suppliers.

Anaswara Offset donated the note books to KMPA.

Apart from this, KMPA received a message from the President of AIFMP confirming the Federation’s contribution to a total amount of Rs.5,00,000/- which will be directly donated to the flood affected members of KMPA. “KMPA whole heartedly thank all the generous contributors. All the above mentioned humble activities would not have

been possible but for such magnanimous show of generosity. The KMPA also thank all its members who tirelessly worked for fund generation, provided technical support for affected press units, and those who worked round the clock to help our affected members get back to their feet,” says Mr. Biju Jose.

Worldwide demand for Heidelberg subscription contracts – commercial printer Burke Group sees great growth potential.

The Burke Group of Companies has enjoyed soaring growth. Established in 1902 as the commercial print shop “Douglas Printing”, Ian and Shawna Burke took over the company in 2005 and changed the name to Burke Group. In the last ten years, sales have grown from CAD 7.5 million (around EUR 5 million) to CAD 28 million today (EUR 18.4 million).

The in Edmonton, Canada-based company currently has 142 employees. “We’ve evolved from a commercial print shop to a solution provider, and offer our customers a one-stop shop – from design to shipping,” explains Ian Burke. “This concept, which includes the online portal and mailing services, is extremely well received. Within the next five years, we’re planning to generate additional growth of CAD 22 million (EUR 14.4 million) through acquisitions.”

The company is planning to increase the current print volume from 18 million to 35-40 million per year. In order to create the increased capacities necessary for this, extensive consultation was provided by Heidelberg. The investment is intended to optimize resources by reducing labour input and waste.

In addition, the existing production area is to be used efficiently and the technology improved. All of these requirements are now fulfilled by the signed subscription contract. It is a complete package comprising machine, software, consumables, and service. The customer only pays for a productive industrial service, in other words the number of printed sheets. “The subscription model fits into our strategy for the future, with which we want to increase our overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) from 13% to at least 26% and in this way achieve our ambitious growth targets,” confirms Ian Burke. “The contract includes consulting services that increase the effectiveness so that we are competitive in a fiercely contested market.”

Subscription contract dovetails with growth targets The subscription contract includes a new eight-colour XL 106 with perfecting, a Stahlfolder TH 82 folding machine, and a Polar N 137 cutting machine. This contract is the first time that the innovative LE UV drying technology has been used on the printing press. The benefits range from the increased productivity to the energy efficiency compared with conventional UV printing, the economy, the variety

of applications, and the impressive colour effect. “This is precisely what we need to provide our demanding customers from industry, trade, gas and water utilities, banks, public institutions, and universities with the best products within the shortest time,” explains Ian Burke. Using LE UV means that the sheets are dry when they reach the delivery, and can go straight into postpress.

The Speedmaster XL 106 is replacing a press from a competitor, and joins a Speedmaster

SM 52 and SX 52 in the press room. Both the subscription machine and the two existing machines will be supplied by Heidelberg with Saphira consumables. These are optimally matched to the machines and help to increase productivity.

“We are seeing strong demand for subscription contracts worldwide, because more and more customers are seeing the many benefits for themselves. We have

20 contracts in place at the moment, and want to exceed the 100 mark by the end of 2020,” explains Professor Dr. Ulrich Hermann, Member of the Management Board responsible for Lifecycle Solutions and Chief Digital Officer at Heidelberg. “We’re happy that the Burke Group with its corporate philosophy and proven track record has chosen the pay-per-use model.”

Samir Patkar is new MD of Heidelberg India Samir Patkar takes over from Klaus Nielsen who decides to take up a new challenge outside Heidelberg India.

Mr. Samir Patkar has been appointed as the new Head of Heidelberg India, effective October 16th, 2018. Mr. Samir Patkar succeeds Mr. Klaus Nielsen, and takes over the managerial duties and responsibilities from the above mentioned date.

After 11 years of successful stint Mr. Klaus Nielsen, has decided to take up a new challenge outside Heidelberg India, during his tenure he made several achievements to the company and expanded the business in many areas. We thank him for his contribution and leadership in the past years.

Mr. Samir Patkar, with more than two decades of experience in the graphic arts industry is a well-known person among the Indian printing fraternity; he is part of Heidelberg group since 2001 and has successfully driven the Indian and Asia Pacific Gallus business at various management capacities.

India Day at All in Print China 2018 “India Day” & India Visitor Group Welcome Ceremony successfully held at All in Print China 2018.

On October, 24th, All in Print China 2018 kicked off at Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC). Mr. Raveendra Joshi, President of the All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP), attended the exhibition together with more than 200 colleagues from India printing industry. On October 25th, the organizers of All in Print China 2018 held the “India Day” & India Visitor Group Welcome Ceremony in SNIEC. Attendees included: Mr. Axel Bartkus, General Manager of Messe Düsseldorf (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.; Mr. Kamal Mohan Chopra, General Secretary of Offset Printers Association (OPA); Mr. Raveendra Joshi, President of the All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP); Mr. Anil Kumar Rai, Consul General, Consulate General of India, Shanghai; and Ms. Chang Xiaoxia, General Manager of Keyin Media. They delivered their speeches respectively during the event.

Xerox published its 2018 Global Corporate Social Responsibility Report detailing the impact of the company’s sustainability efforts across operations in 160 countries.

Highlights from this year’s report include: • 100 percent of newly launched eligible Xerox products satisfied the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT®) and EPA ENERGY STAR® eco-labels.

• 100 percent of products and parts returned by customers at end-of-life, diverted from entering landfills. Instead, we remanufactured, reused, recycled, or provided the waste to suppliers who converted it into an energy source.

• Six percent of the U.S employee population are military veterans.

Earlier this year, the company published the first ever 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Progress Report, a data-

Hamillroad Software wins trademark case Settlement pertaining to German trademark case for Auraia DMS clears the way for the relaunch of Auraia DMS Screening.

In March 2016,DruckhausHaberbeck claimed a trademark infringement in Germany and issued a cease and desist action against the use of Auraia by Hamillroad’s German distributor. Hamillroad supported its distributor and defended the matter up to the point that the Regional Court of Bielefeld dismissed the claim in March 2017.

In parallel with these actions, Hamillroad initiated legal proceedings against Haberbeck for the illegal use and validity of their trademarks. In November 2017, the German Patent and Trademark Office cancelled one of Haberbeck’s trademarks on the grounds of deceptive use. The matter is under appeal by Haberbeck.

Following the loss in Bielefeld, Haberbeck

appealed the original court’s ruling and took the case before the Higher Regional Court of Hamm.

On the 23rd January 2018, two days before the appeal hearing, Haberbeck agreed to settle all the pending legal trademark actions.

The settlement includes both legal costs and compensation, paid to Hamillroad and their German distributor.

Andy Cave, Hamillroad’s CEO commented on the settlement: “This dispute should never have gone to court in the first place as it was clear from the outset that there was no case to answer. We tried on numerous occasions to settle with Haberbeck, but they insisted on pursuing the legal proceedings. We prefer not to engage in court action, but if someone

tries to attack us (or breaches our IP) we will defend ourselves and, if we must, take the matter to court, no matter who it is, how long it takes or what it costs.”

Cave continues: “The legal proceedings put a pause on our Auraia DMS business in Germany, resulting in a negative impact on our German partner’s sales. We are pleased to have finally closed this chapter and are happy to confirm that we have re-opened the door for new business in Germany.”

This year’s meeting was already the 14th time that users of the Cortina waterless newspaper press had come together to discuss technical innovations and the latest developments on the market. Under the overall aegis of Koenig & Bauer, the Cortina users gathered at the headquarters of ink manufacturer hubergroup in Munich. “We are proud that the Cortina User Workshop has proved so successful over so many years and that it meets with such positive response,” said a delighted Peter Benz, Cortina project manager at Koenig & Bauer Digital & Webfed.

As initiator of the workshop, he also assumed his now traditional role as moderator of the two-day event, which was attended by around 100 participants from 15 countries. He reported on recent sales successes and press start-ups, for example the commencement of production at ICP Roto on La Réunion and the commissioning of the first Cortina section at Coldset Printing Partners in Paal-Beringen, Belgium.

Aiming safeguards for journalists and media professionals WAN-IFRA joins call for UN convention on the protection of media professionals.

WAN-IFRA joins forces with a coalition of international organisations to campaign for the adoption of a new UN Convention dedicated to the protection of media professionals. The consortium includes representatives of journalists, media workers, broadcasters, and newspapers from around the world.

Meeting at the UN headquarters in New York with state representatives from Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, Latin America, Asia and North America, the coalition set out the case for a new UN Convention with the objective to rectify a gap in international law for binding norms establishing safeguards for journalists and media professionals including cameramen, photographers, technical supporting staff, drivers and interpreters, editors, translators, publishers, broadcasters, printers and distributors.

The initiative was launched by the International Federation of Journalists, with a Convention drafted by International Human Rights expert Carmen Draghici, Senior Lecturer in Law, City University in London.

During the meeting in NYC, Dr Draghici said that there was a clear case for a dedicated instrument to tackle crimes against journalists as a result of the deliberate targeting of journalists and the systemic impact of attacks on media workers for citizens’ right to know.

IFJ President Philippe Leruth said: “A journalist’s murder simply because of his or her activity is a scandal, but a far bigger scandal is that 9 out of every 10 journalists’ murders remain unpunished. The Khashoggi case, like all the others, illustrate that journalists are singled out as a target and as such they need dedicated protection.”

Elena Perotti, Executive Director Public Affairs and Media Policy at WAN-IFRA said “In the current international legal framework there are no binding norms establishing safeguards for media workers specifically.

This undeniably contributes to the phenomenon of the accountability bar being reset to the lowest level by States getting away with the normalisation of a culture of violence against journalists.”

Johannes Studinger, General Secretary of UNI-MEI told the meeting: “Not a week goes by without us receiving reports of yet more attacks or repression against media workers.

Unless there is action we fear that we will just keep talking about more and more attacks.

We express our support for the IFJ initiative”.

IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger said: “Today was an important first step towards securing enhanced protection for journalists and media professionals. We welcome the support and commitment from member states and our fellow professional organisations and will continue to build a broader coalition to deliver real action on impunity.”

In addition to the ink keys, Smart Pre-setting also regulates the amount of damp based on self-learning software. “In this way, 150 to 200 copies can easily be saved during start-up,” says director Menno Jansen.

NZME Auckland-based NZME – which prints the New Zealand Herald and a range of other titles including some for Fairfax Media unit Stuff – is among sites where these savings are already being realized and fine tuning promises more. Production manager Russel Wieck says the Smart Pre-setting software gives them more control over start-ups: “We don’t work with a single press line here and often switch between our three presses. It happens that we run for hours with a number of towers and then suddenly have to add

Remote A feature of the Auckland implementation was that it was completed almost entirely remotely, a task made easier by the strong relationship the two have had over many years. “In cooperation with NZME, we did a lot of research into the precise adjustment of the system,” says Menno Jansen. “Finetuning such a software package requires a lot of time and energy. Yet it proved possible to do this with their technicians on site and our coordination from the Netherlands. It says a lot about the user-friendliness of the Smart Pre-setting software”. Russel Wieck says the cooperation has been flawless: “The support from QIPC is perfect, with it helping that our night is their day,” he says. “This allows us to have direct contact with QIPC during our production.”

Up-to-date The result is that the presses in New Zealand continue to compare favourably with more modern machines. “We can now look ahead,” says a satisfied Russel Wieck. “Our press is more than 20 years old, but thanks in part to Smart Pre-setting it is future-proof.

This is important in our business. No one else but QIPC is doing much to keep old presses up-to-date”.

During the Print 18 tradeshow in Chicago, September 30th through October 2nd, manroland Goss web systems presented the plan for the future of the company to the print community as a united entity for the first time since the merger of manroland web systems and Goss international in August of 2018.

Q.I. Press Controls further expands activities in India Kalptaru Offset, Natraj Print House, Saraswati Press, Hexagon Print & Pack and Sanat Printers are five new Indian partners with whom Q.I. Press Controls (QIPC) will collaborate. The Dutch specialist in measuring and control equipment for the printing industry supplies Indian printers with various mRC-3D systems for colour register control.

Rakesh Dave, managing director of QIPCEAE India, is delighted to respond to the different orders. He emphasises the versatility of QIPC’s automation systems. “Every press and printing company is different, of course,” he explains. “These orders also involve three different types of machines. For each specific installation, we will really deliver custom work.

These orders show once again that QIPC systems can be integrated in any type of web offset press.

Kalptaru Offset In Ahmedabad, an mRC-3D system for colour register and cut-off control is installed on a TPH Orient press. In total, two cameras are involved. Kalptaru will print fewer wasted copies, work more efficiently and deliver higher quality prints thanks to QIPC’s innovative system.

Natraj Print House Natraj Print House, also based in Ahmedabad, will also equip its Pressline press with an mRC-3D system for colour register and cut-off control. This also involves two cameras. As with Kalptaru Offset, these will be installed by QIPC and the staff will receive technical training on site.

Saraswati Press The order Saraswati Press placed with QIPC consists of four different projects, all of which will be carried out at the Kolkata printing plant. Four of these are two colour register mRC-3D cameras installed on a NAPH Graphics press. “Our systems are

already installed on several NAPH presses,” says Rakesh Dave. “That turns out to be a successful combination. Hence this new order.

Hexagon Print & Pack This print shop in Mumbai has an mRC-3D colour register system installed on a TPH Orient press. The first priority of this quality printer from the Bombay region is to further improve the quality of their printing. In addition, the QIPC system will contribute to a reduction in the number of lost copies and a more efficient production process.

Sanat Printers Sanat Printers from Sonipat already has experience with QIPC systems. The good reputation of the Dutch company also contributed to Sanat Printers having a new mRC-3D system for colour register and cutoff control installed on its Harris M600 press.

The printer wants to save on the number of lost copies and is convinced of the high technology used by QIPC.

Leibinger JET3up PI: Lighting up the dark side of product marking Printing codes on black plastics with CIJ printers and pigmented inks: this is the dark, problematic side of product marking for many industrial companies, due to the high level of care printers for heavily pigmented inks require. Paul Leibinger has brought light to the dark with the JET3up PI – a Continuous Inkjet printer (CIJ) specially developed for this area, which was on display at the Fakuma trade fair in Friedrichshafen from 16 to 20 October 2018.

Continuous Inkjet printers (CIJ) are among the most popular marking systems in the industry. For dark plastics, however, this type of marking only works with pigment inks, also called contrast inks or opaque inks – since conventional inks would be as illegible as the writing of a pen on black paper.

Moreover, Leibinger designed the hydraulics so that they do not require external compressed air. Contamination of the pigment ink by water, oil or rust is therefore avoided. “Thanks to this combination of a nozzle sealing system and compressed-air-

With the JET3up PI, companies can mark product packaging, cables, pipes, wires and electronic parts on-the-fly during production.

Adobe has delivered on its commitment to pay parity between women and men globally across nearly 40 countries. This is a critical milestone in Adobe’s ongoing commitment to providing employees with a workplace that is inclusive, innovative and exceptional.

These global pay adjustments, including those previously made in the United States and India, impacted less than five percent of Adobe employees and less than 0.2 percent of global payroll costs.

A few traumatic years and much disruption in the graphics business has seen renovation and renewal in many parts of the industry. But none has enjoyed such dramatic rejuvenation as the flexo sector. Chemical and imaging advances are helping flexographers compete with alternative printing methods, including offset, gravure and digital printing. Flexo has shed its former, slightly dowdy, reputation as these advances create exciting new applications, business opportunities and highly capable manufacturing processes.

As over 40% of food produced in India is wasted due to factors that include lack of cold supply chains and accessible packaging materials, over the next ten years in emerging markets, growing cold supply chains will lead to new packaging and labels applications.

Packaging, flexo’s traditional stronghold, gets a lot of attention these days. Digital press manufacturers are eyeing up the sector and packaging producers and brands want new ways to engage with customers.

Rob Vermeulen, board member of the European Brand & Packaging Design Association (ePDA), identifies the Z generation millennials who “don’t want to communicate in the conventional way”. Rob’s colleague, Uwe Melichar, President of the European Brand & Packaging Design Association (ePDA), says generation Z “Want It When I Want It Where I Want It” and expect more. “We see a movement from the

major brands to the private label. The private label will become more and more strong and change their communications because they’re not bound to the history”.

This is music to the ears of digital printing systems manufacturers working on packaging presses for on demand short run applications. In coming years digital printing will indeed be a bigger part of the services mix, but it will not dominate. Competing with flexo technology’s speed and materials flexibility is tough and flexo technologies such as the KODAK FLEXCEL NX System, celebrating its tenth birthday this year, will ensure flexo’s continued edge.

Looking good Further improvements to flexo prepress will deliver yet higher output quality and productivity, and at a reasonable cost. The KODAK FLEXCEL NX System meets growing customer demands for tighter process control and faster job turnarounds. According to Chris Payne, President of Kodak’s Flexographic Packaging Division, “we’re at the beginning of this transition in flexo for packaging”. The print method

is both taking share from gravure and offset and seeing organic growth. As it becomes easier to control and results become more predictable, investment risks come down.

Payne says “flexo is the most adaptable of all print processes and FLEXCEL NX Plate technology supports the step-change in on-press performance required to implement new and more efficient ways of working, such as a reduction in spot colour inks and the adoption of ECG [Extended Colour Gamut] printing. Ink and coating innovations, as well as new screening developments specifically for packaging print, are helping ECG printing implementations spread as colour becomes simpler for flexo printers to manage in software to guarantee accurate colour appearance on the printing substrate. Flexo changes slowly “and we’re not done with investing. FLEXCEL NX technology is one key component as we move forward in the standardisation of the process” according to Payne. He adds that “we have other things that will help to drive even greater efficiency and sustainability”.

Advancing onwards The next ten years are all about materials science and developers working with brands and retailers to drive graphics technology improvements. Digital printing systems produce prints on demand and for very short runs, serving small local producers of goods such as honey or cosmetics, artworks and craft goods. However, for digital printing technology to achieve sufficient scale for Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) will take time. We can expect to see much more variety and diversity in packaging solutions in the next ten years. Creative digital printing implementation models will not be cost effective compared to flexo presses producing 10,000 packaging impressions an hour, a typical short run for FMCG packages.

As brand owners demand increasingly bespoke consumer packages, even for trials across a single city, flexo will remain the preferred option.

Flexo technology keeps improving process reliability and stability, so supply chains are reforming, and workflow systems increasingly support ECG printing and distributed job management. These are key development areas for major digital press manufacturers, keen to provide competitive advantage over flexography. But with over 500 customers using the KODAK FLEXCEL NX System

in daily production, the company has the necessary experience and market intimacy to keep it at the leading edge of flexo and packaging production.

Flexible flexo There’s more Over the next ten years in emerging markets where keeping food fresh is difficult, growing cold supply chains will lead to new packaging and labels applications. According to the United Nations Development Programme over 40% of food produced in India is wasted due to factors that include lack of cold supply chains and accessible packaging materials. Even in warm places, plastic wraps on coconuts can extend shelf life from four to twelve weeks. And new formats are emerging as shopping habits change, requiring smaller quantities and trial sizes. Dr John Anderson, responsible for business development at Kodak, says, “we’ve gone from supermarkets holding around 9,000 product lines in the 1970s to over 45,000 in the 2000’s”. Varying sizes and versions plus short turnaround requirements add pressure to complex supply chains, and smaller quantities create more packaging. One package for a loaf of bread becomes multiple packages with fewer slices, more likely to be eaten than discarded. This increases packaging but reduces food waste. Sustainability is about balance, so pressure for environmentally friendly packaging lifecycles will rise in line with changing recycling behaviours.

Sort it Anderson explains that Europe has one of the highest levels of recycling in the world … [but] there is a difference between recycling and reusing and recovering components from the product. One of the problems with plastics recycling is getting enough of the material to make it easy and economically viable to recycle. Brands are getting together to develop mechanisms for sorting at recycling plants instead of in the home or at curb side. Apart from the complex politics there are many challenges to achieving this, requiring technology and investment into separation processes, managing mixed components, dealing with contaminants and consumer education. Flexible packaging use will keep rising. We see more and more of this type of package. Instead of a PET bottle we’re seeing flexible pouches with thinner materials. Lightweight materials which stretch on press are not well suited to

Knowing how to prepare for the next ten years depends fundamentally on an awareness of technological developments and being able to see where current trends are heading. The flexo sector is slow moving but working hard to exploit digital workflow and process automation technologies.

With more predictable plate making using technologies such as the KODAK FLEXCEL NX System’s, this gets easier. Laser Ablative Mask System (LAMS) technologies widely used for flexo plate production over the last 20 years are reaching their performance limits and are challenged to match Kodak’s speed and output quality, without using additional products and processes involving time and cost. Kodak employs a combination of high resolution film-based mask, KODAK SQUARESpot Imaging Technology and a unique lamination process to create extremely sharp flat-topped dots that are a 1:1 faithful reproduction of the digital file and optimized for printing. This technical approach brings a greater degree of precision to the plate making process and offers significant potential for future developments that will further the evolution of standardized, automated print production.

Kodak’s technology allows for the imaging of micro-level, highly engineered patterns on the printing surface of the plate and as Payne explains “the plate’s the thing controlling the ink flow” positively impacting press running speeds. This helps flexo printers move away from outdated practises, to use digital production techniques to reduce prepress process steps. Payne says flexo printing is “still basically a craft industry … where we’re going with production, [it] will be an automated process in future”. But this depends on knowledge within the sector as much as on technology.

Training and knowledge development Understanding how to get the most out of new technologies helps companies improve services to customers and their bottom line profits. But making a change takes effort.

Stefano d’Andrea, a technical consultant with the European Flexo Technology Association reminds flexo printers that “new technologies

are useless if you don’t use them in the proper way”. He suggests that flexo printers stop using the press as a proofer because it’s no longer necessary to work that way. d’Andrea has also found that technology, such as the FLEXCEL NX System can make flexo cleaner and greener, for example by reducing environmental impacts using ECG printing which reduces the number of inks required. As well as saving money, ECG printing means less wash up on press, predictable colour control, faster makereadies and more reliable file sharing across output processes. Effective implementation of ECG requires an understanding of digital colour management because as d’Andrea says, “you have to demonstrate how good you are in CMYK to reach expanded gamut”.

Offset printers print to ISO print control aims extracted from predefined characterization data sets for different printing conditions.

CRPC7, (Characterized Reference Printing Conditions) one of several characterisation data sets used in ISO graphic technology standards, characterises CMYK’s widest colour gamut in offset. d’Andrea points out that “we should be able to do that in flexo” and that brand owners and printers can

work together to ease conversion of process specific data sets for automatic colour data repurposing because “if you can measure it, you can control it”. Over the next ten years we expect to see many more flexo printers improving colour control and output reliability, because this is what their customers want.

Control freaks Output control depends as much on the printing plate as it does on software and robust characterisation data sets.

Improvements in plate technology are catalysts for wider changes in the industry and have pushed Kodak to keep refining the FLEXCEL NX System. But they are also spurring ink and coating innovations, and Anderson says, “one of the trends we look at is can the print be part of the barrier properties: can we add stuff to ink to create a barrier?”. A quick examination of some leading brand initiatives reinforces the need for technology solutions. The Pepsi 2025 sustainability agenda is working to achieve zero waste to landfill, through collaborations with other big brands for sorting and processing waste. Pepsi aims for 100% of its packaging to be recyclable by 2025 and

there are already signs that other big names are following suit. Iceland, a UK retailer of frozen foods has committed to becoming 100% plastic-free by 2025. By then we can expect considerable materials advances.

Today’s eco materials are made with plantbased products but taking corn from food chain makes food more expensive. Anderson says the “next generation of products will come from waste products from plant materials”, such as a monolayer instead of multilayer substrates which are hard to recycle. Aluminium oxide (AlOx) is “a coating solution. It’s very thin but when you melt the plastic, the AlOx floats to the surface and can be renewed and recycled … the chemistry is really starting to move”.

Since 2008, flexo technology advances have focused on chemical and imaging innovations and reshaped the sector. By 2028 flexo printing will match offset for stability and predictability and traditional supply chains will collapse and reform.

It will be a bumpy ride but as Anderson says, “it’s all of us together … all of us in partnership driving operational efficiency and sustainability together”.

Non-Ketone Non-Toluene inks at Flint’s Lamdapura facility - Non Ketone and non Toluene inks under the ArrowFlex and ArrowBond brand names being produced at Flint Group’s Lamdapura, India facility.

It is known that inks produced using toluene and/or ketone, which are used in some packaging and labels can pose health risks.

Indian Label industry has for the last many years been registering a steady double-digit growth. The industry largely consists of family owned small or medium sized enterprises employing 1-5 label presses. A handful of larger enterprises have surfaced in recent times due to acquisitions or mergers by multinational companies. The size still needs to become bigger to reach the size of large international label producers.

Ironically some of the upcoming existing companies in this segment who were growing and appeared to become large players, opted to be acquired rather than go it alone. We do see some Indian owned label companies now rising from the crowds to become evident in growth beyond the average size. It is hoped that they will also not opt to be acquired, we do need indigenous companies that will grow and prove their mettle. There is an imperative need for these companies to break away from being single owner or family driven businesses to become professionallymanaged entities. They need to optimise production processes, manage wastages, invest in workflow automation, etc. leading to continuous growth and better profitability. Stronger bottom lines in the industry is sure to enable printers investing in expansion and employment of new technologies leading to evolution of the industry, presenting state of art products. A large population and expanding retail trade are driving the demand for labels. The industry that originated in just the metro cities is now spreading to the interiors of India, there is need for further growth as printers realise the need to be multilocational to be able to service customers in a large country more efficiently. At this time the exhibition Labelexpo is looked at with interest as it provides knowledge not only to existing printers but also to new entrants. It showcases the best of indigenous and international label production equipment, materials and consumables at one place. Cosmo Films launches metalized velvet lamination film Cosmo Films, global provider of speciality films for flexible packaging, lamination and labeling applications as well as synthetic paper recently launched a metalized velvet lamination film for luxury packaging segment. The newly developed film has been engineered to offer intense silver colour along with rich velvet touch to the laminated paper/paperboard or package.

Silver colour is not easy to handle especially when used as a background during printing.

It takes longer to dry and also has a risk of ink set off during print stacking. Due to these challenges, printers usually avoid using silver as a background colour. However, graphic art designers prefer silver background as it allows them to make attractive artworks facilitating use of many other shades and the impact it generates with gold foil stamping and UV spot coating. To bridge this gap, Cosmo Films introduced the metalized velvet touch film which is glueable, stampable

and printable. The matte silver coloured BOPP based velvet touch lamination film needs to be laminated to the unprinted paper before going for printing or post lamination embellishments.

The film is available for both thermal and wet lamination in 32 and 20 microns respectively and offers excellent printability with offset, UV offset, screen, UV inkjet and laser printing.

GMG OpenColor 2.2 provides integrated measurement data optimization Colour management specialist GMG is releasing an upgrade to its GMG OpenColor profiling solution. Version 2.2 of the multiaward-winning software incorporates automatic, spectral data-based optimization of measurement data.

GMG OpenColor creates colour-accurate proofing and separation profiles based on characterization of the planned print production. The user measures test charts or colour patches in order to obtain data needed for characterization. This data is subsequently combined with other parameters from the printing process to create a dynamic profile. Naturally, the data obtained from the calibration process has to be optimized. Erroneous test charts, poor substrate textures, and dust can all cause an excessive degree of distortion. Deviations can also arise from the measuring device itself. Previously, users of GMG OpenColor were reliant on third-party software for optimizing the measurement data or had to subsequently correct profiles themselves in a manual process. Double celebrations at FlexoTech Awards At the 2018 FlexoTech Awards in London, Reflex Labels and Hamilton Labels won an award in three categories. The Awards

ceremony was held in London at October 10th. Reflex Labels’ label ‘The Black Farmer Pork Mince’ won the award in the category UV flexo, paper and board. This label was printed on Reflex’ MPS EF 510 flexo press.

Hamilton Labels’ label ‘Kenkō Koi Fish Food Colour Plus’ won both the award in the ‘Labels (process)’ category and the prestigious Supreme Award.

Xeikon celebrates 30-year anniversary Jubilee book to mark print’s 25-year digital journey.

Over the last year, in a series of articles on the ‘PastPrintFuture’-blog, industry experts Laurel Brunner and Ed Boogaard have been chronicling the 25-year history of digital printing. To commemorate this milestone, there will also be a book of the same title – to be launched during Xeikon’s 30th anniversary celebration.

It has been 25 years since the Xeikon DCP-1 and the Indigo E-Print 1000 were introduced at IPEX 1993. The digital printing industry has come a long way since, and 2018 was an excellent moment to explore digital printing’s evolution. The ‘PastPrintFuture’ project set out from the beginning to not just talk technology, say Brunner and Boogaard: “We wanted to focus also on the people that

made it happen, on the changes that digital printing has enabled in business models and in applications, and on how this helps to define the future of the industry.”

Brunner and Boogaard managed to engage with a broad range of people that have been closely involved with print’s digital journey in various ways. “We have talked to great entrepreneurs who often have been pioneers in digital print and are still pushing the boundaries. And industry pundits such as Frank Romano, Andy Tribute and Kurt Wolf have helped us to put things in a broader perspective.” Danny Mertens, Corporate Communications Manager for Xeikon, adds: “We hope both the blog and now the book will be beneficial to those who are relatively

new to the industry, and a walk down memory lane for veterans who have been around for a while.”

“Writing down these stories and reading through historical publications, we have once again been impressed by what has been achieved in only 25 years – but even more so by what the future may still bring to this industry. Beck Automation AG presents new BASIC IML Variant In-mould labelling technology for food and non-food applications.

The BASIC IML series from Beck Automation AG, Oberengstringen, Switzerland, is now also available for two cavities. The new variant is suitable for 1 to 5 litre buckets. The machine can of course also be operated with only one cavity. This model complements the established and successful BASIC IML model, which is particularly deployed for buckets with product sizes from 5 to 33 litres and was designed for one cavity.

The basic structure of the BASIC IML system comprises a stable and compact machine frame. The rapid movements are made possible thanks to the robust machine frame and the use of high-performance servo motors made by Beckhoff.

As with all custom IML systems from Beck Automation, the BASIC IML systems also use high quality materials to ensure the long life of the machines. In addition, during development a lot of emphasis was placed on speed, ergonomics and dynamics; this has resulted in the BASIC IML system that is in no way inferior to customer-specific systems.

The new BASIC IML system with two cavities has an impressively short and attractive delivery time, just like the first BASIC IML model. Standardised construction means the system can be delivered ex-works just 12 weeks after receipt of order.

Along with numerous “Beck standards� already available in the basic version, great emphasis is also placed on high levels of flexibility. Round, rectangular or oval products of between 1 - 5 litres, with cavity spacing of 300mm - 575mm are all possible. The arrangement of the two cavities must be horizontal. The included rotary cores, which correctly orient the label, are already available in the BASIC IML system.

Unilever and Veolia sign collaboration agreement on Sustainable Packaging Three-year partnership will improve waste collection and recycling infrastructure to help create a circular economy for plastics waste.

Unilever and Veolia today announced that they have signed a collaboration agreement to jointly work on emerging technologies that will help create a circular economy on plastics across various geographies, starting in India and Indonesia. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, just 14% of the plastic packaging used globally is collected for recycling after use, with 40% ending up in landfill and a third in fragile ecosystems.

In 2017, Unilever made a strong commitment to ensure that all its plastic packaging will be designed to be fully reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. To help create an end market for this material, the company also committed to increase the recycled plastic content in its packaging to at least 25% by 2025. These targets are driving real change

Xaar 1201 opens up new graphics markets for Chinese OEMs The superb print quality and versatility of the Xaar 1201 printhead is opening up new markets for Chinese OEMs in wide-format graphics – as recently underlined by the printhead’s presence on XuCheng’s stand at SGIA 2018 in Las Vegas.

Used in XuCheng’s PRIMO X3500 flatbed industrial printer, the compact Xaar 1201 printhead delivers a high level of print quality and performance. Designed for easy integration by printer manufacturers, it features 1280 nozzles that jet variable dropsizes. These produce high-quality graphics and textiles on a wide range of substrates at an apparent resolution of up to 1440 dpi.

This success is driven by two factors: firstly, how Xaar and HaoCheng, the company’smaster distributor in Greater China, work together to provide Chinese OEMs with the key resources(including training, electronics, inks and printheads) required to develop a printer; and secondly, HaoCheng’s full integration support.

development cycles and reduces time-tomarket, and has already contributed to the Xaar 1201’s impressive adoption-rate across Asia.
