FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Kodak, continuing on its drupa momentum at LabelExpo India 2016, attracted a lot of attention for its flagship Flexcel NX System. Kodak announced a significant partnership with Sergusa Solutions which carries Kodak’s Packaging portfolio to offer a turnkey solution to greenfield packaging convertors as well as to existing flexible packaging convertors that are using conventional print technologies. NX System was the buzzword at Kodak stall of LabelExpo. Besides, Prinergy workflow was at the helm of affairs especially at the LMAI awards with the winners using the workflow along with Kodak’s NX System and plates. Nilpeter, Moksha, Alliance, R K Labels and Monotech were running Kodak plates for their demos and quite a few NX Certifications were too conferred by Kodak. Labelexpo India 2016 closed its most successful show to date on 20 November. Billed as the largest dedicated label and package printing event for the South Asia region, Labelexpo India amassed the latest technology and solutions available to printers with over 200 exhibitors occupying the show floor. Endorsed and supported by the Label Manufacturers Association of India, All India Federation of Master Printers, Delhi Printers Association and Authentication Solution Providers’ Association, Labelexpo India also hosted the revered LMAI Avery Dennison Label Awards. Many significant sales contracts were inked by exhibitors including: Alliance Printech, Grafotronic, HP, Marks Enterprises, Multitec Aids, Nilpeter, Omet, Vinsak and Xeikon. Apart from LabelExpo launches, there have been quite a few other launches of relevance around the industry segments. HP has launched its new DesignJet Z series printers in India. HP DesignJet Z5600 and Z2600 PostScript Printers come with a six-ink printing system, which helps users cut costs by reducing ink consumption up to 20 percent. Galgo has launched its Galgo4D range of precut Digital Fine Papers. Cosmo Films has launched Universal Lidding Films for all thermoformed plastic containers.

On the installation front, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Kodak has seen sharp demand for its portfolio of CTP platesetters with ten customers in 2016 choosing to integrate Kodak’s complete pre-press solution – thermal CTP platesetters, thermal printing plates, and Prinergy Workflow – into their operations. Malayala Manorama has placed repeat order for Manugraph Smartline. TCPL Packaging has signed up for two, brand new MK 1060YM Foil-stamping & Die-cutting Equipment from Heidelberg. Skanem Interlabels has chosen HP Indigo WS6800. The order was placed at the recent LabelExpo 2016. In the wide-format arena, Arrow Digital has installed an Efi-Vutek GS3250LX Pro 3.2 mtr 10 colour Hybrid LED coolcure UV high speed printer at Macromedia, Hyderabad and also a Jetrix KX5, true flatbed printer at VGA Digital Printers of Pune. Kodak’s Thermal CTP technology is helping customers win across Tamil Nadu Earlier this year Kodak celebrated 21 years of thermal imaging technology and its 21,000th computerto-plate (CTP) sale at drupa 2016.

Thermal CTP is a major part of Kodak’s rich history in imaging and a primary building block for its graphic communications business today. CTP technology is also testimony to the strength of Kodak’s product portfolio and long-term commitment to the commercial print industry.

In India, the print industry continued to build on its healthy growth trajectory with investments in new technology and equipment a key factor shaping the future for the country’s hundreds of thousands of printers. One region, in particular, has characterized this investment trend over the past year. In the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Kodak has seen sharp demand for its portfolio of CTP platesetters with ten customers in 2016 choosing to integrate Kodak’s complete pre-press solution -thermal CTP platesetters, thermal printing plates, and Prinergy Workflow--into their operations.

By incorporating this pre-press combination, printers are realizing improvements in productivity, quality, and sustainability, especially when integrating technology like SONORA Process Free Plates.

Q800. As a pre-press Bureau, their core needs include speed of output and high resolution to meet the exacting needs of their customers. They opted for a highspeed machine (X Speed) that delivers 2400 dpi output at a standard 34 plates an hour. Combined with Kodak plates, Digital Plate System will utilize this advanced infrastructure to expand their business in the market.

Frontline Printer in Guindy, which serves the publishing market (newspapers and magazines) added a second Kodak CTP machine with the purchase of a Kodak Trendsetter Q400.

Eswari Cards in Sivakasi, which was established over 50 years ago, has carved out a niche in the wedding card market, where they are well-recognized leaders offering a wide variety of options to professional wedding photographers.

Recognizing market demand for a higher degree of output quality, Eswaro Cards installed a Kodak Trendsetter Q800 CTP and Kodak thermal plates.

In Madurai, Tamil Nadu’s cultural headquarters, a strong economy over the past few years has buttressed the growth of the print industry. Vijaay Offset is taking advantage of this trend and has invested in a Kodak Trendsetter

Q800 for their offset production of stationery, book publishing, and general commercial printing jobs.

Olympic Cards is an existing Kodak customer, and they were running an older model of the Trendsetter 800 CTP platesetter. Their experience with Kodak and Trendsetter’s thermal imaging capabilities gave them the confidence to choose Kodak yet again, and they recently installed a hybrid Kodak Trendsetter Q800 CTP with DITR film imaging capabilities. Heidelberg creates sound basis to achieve year’s targets Clearly increases net result in the second quarter with operating result (EBITDA) excluding special items increasing from €33 million to €44 million During the second quarter (July 1 to September 30, 2016) of financial year 2016/2017, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) significantly increased its operating result compared to the previous year, as previously envisaged, and also achieved a clearly positive net result after taxes. After the first six months, the result was still below the previous year’s figures due to sales and the costs associated with the drupa trade show. However, as a result of drupa, incoming orders (up around 6 percent) and the order backlog (up 19 percent) were increased significantly. The Group has thus created a sound basis on which to achieve its targets for the year as a whole.

“The clear improvement in the result during the second quarter shows that our realignment is bearing fruit. In view of the solid order situation, we anticipate that the second half of the year will bring a considerable improvement in sales and the result compared to the first half of the year. The targets for the year as a whole therefore continue to apply,” said Dirk Kaliebe, the company’s CFO.

Sales and the result in the second quarter were much better than in the previous quarter of the current financial year. Net sales rose by euro100 million compared to the first quarter to euro586 million (previous year: euro599 million). Total sales up to the half-year point were euro1.072 billion (previous year: euro1.162 billion). Thanks to strong demand at drupa, incoming orders for the first six months were up around 6 percent on the previous year’s figure (euro1.323 billion) at euro1.408 billion, while the order backlog at euro765 million was even some 19 percent

higher (previous year euro644 million). As a result, Heidelberg has a good starting base for achieving the anticipated significant sales growth in the second half of the year.

Both EBITDA and EBIT in the quarter under review were up on the figures for the previous year. EBITDA excluding special items rose to euro44 million in the second quarter. The total figure for the first half year was euro45 million. Compared to the previous year, the financial result improved both in the second quarter and in the first half year. A positive net result after taxes of euro9 million was achieved.

Thanks to solid incoming orders and the increase in the order backlog, Heidelberg has its sights set firmly on its year-end targets for 2016/2017. The portfolio expansion in rapidly developing markets, possible acquisitions and the drupa industry trade show are expected to substantially affect sales performance in the financial year 2016/2017 and the years ahead.

The investment priorities in the areas of digitalization, digital printing and services are also expected to contribute to an average sales growth of up to 4 percent per year.

The EBITDA margin before special items is expected to remain at the level of the previous year. The company is looking to improve the financial result by reducing the interest burden.

The figures for the third quarter of financial year 2016/2017 are due to be published on February 9, 2017.

KBA and Flint seal cooperation on conventional inks Rapida users benefit from tested inks KBA-Sheetfed and Flint Group Sheetfed have recently signed a strategic partnership.

The deal refers to the worldwide use of Flint Group’s conventional sheetfed ink series on high-performance KBA Rapida presses.

Inks with the seal of quality “Recommended

by KBA” can be obtained through the Flint Group dealer network.

KBA-Sheetfed recommends the use of different Flint Group ink series for different applications, for example for straight printing (Novavit F700 on mineral oil basis or Novavit F950 on vegetable oil basis), perfecting (F950), general packaging printing (Novavit F1000 WIN Bio), food packaging (Novasens P660 PREMIUM) and a number of special applications such as printing on nonabsorbent substrates or fast work-and-turn.

Rapida users who choose the corresponding printing inks from Flint Group benefit from the wealth of experience gained with the individual ink systems at KBA-Sheetfed. All inks are subject to constant testing and, where necessary, are modified specifically to suit the fast Rapida presses. The outcome is constantly high and reproducible print quality – process standardisation is raised to a new level. GDMPA felicitates AIFMP new team Greater Delhi Master Printers’ Association organised the felicitation function to welcome the newly elected team of AIFMP. Present at the function were President, Prof. Kamal Chopra; Vice Presidents, Hon. General Secretary, Hon. Joint Secretary and Hon. Treasurer. Shri Vijay Kumar Chopra, Editorin-chief, Punjab Kesari and past President of the AIFMP, was the Chief Guest.

Shri Vinod Sethi, President GDMPA welcomed the newly elected team under the leadership of Prof. Kamal Chopra for the year 2016-17. Apart from the members of GDMPA, the event was attended by the

printers including those from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

The GDMPA President emphasised the problems of printing industries viz., performance and quality of printing machinery being manufactured in India, shortage of trained technical people, increase in paper prices and competition among printers.

He also talked about his mission to put AIFMP on international map and invited GC members to the April 2017 meeting in China. Imposition of PDF files made easy OneVision has announced the release of its 5.9 imposition software “PlugAUTOIMPOSEin”. The new feature “template editor” makes the imposition of pdf files even easier. The high degree of automation involved in PlugAUTOIMPOSEin means that manual input is greatly reduced, common errors are avoided, and valuable time and money are saved.

The German software producer has developed two easy and time-saving solutions for PDF file imposition, tailored to customers’ needs. Both the PlugAUTOIMPOSEin and Speedflow Impose programmes are suitable for digital and offset printing with rollers and sheets and offer a much faster processing speed, even for extremely large volumes. The easy configuration of remainder sheets, as well as straightforward creation of imposition

templates are additional advantages of the software solution.

The substantial difference between the two software solutions is found in the degree of automation: the PlugAUTOIMPOSEin connection to the Asura “data cleansing tool” and the Workspace workflow management software processes and optimises the PDFs. Naturally this process makes use of the Workspace job ticket function. The page format for an imposition template for PlugAUTOIMPOSEin is variable to a certain extent, and can be automatically transferred to a PDF document awaiting processing.

If the document page format goes beyond the defined value, it can be adjusted or transferred to a better-suited imposition template. In addition to the many possible barcode options (e.g. DataMatrix, QR), the “Cut and Stack” option offers users of digital

printing in particular added flexibility, allowing version “1” to be produced cheaply. As a new highlight PlugAUTOIMPOSEin includes the feature “template editor”. The module makes it possible to put together individual templates according to customer needs and to impose them automatically afterwards.

The 64Bit architecture supports output files of over 2 GB. In all, PlugAUTOIMPOSEin offers over 1,000 different imposition and printing combinations for the professional page and sheet assembly of books, magazines and job printing. The high degree of automation involved in PlugAUTOIMPOSEin means that manual input is greatly reduced, common errors are avoided, and valuable time and money are saved.

Imposition and pdf files have been made quick and easy – also without any OneVision workflow – by implementing Speedflow Impose.

German Print Media Technology Competition selects winner for WorldSkills 2017 in Abu Dhabi Three newly graduated printers put themselves forward for the opportunity to represent Germany at the next WorldSkills in the print media technology discipline, competing in a preliminary selection round entitled “We make world champions” from 23 to 24 November 2016. Florian Kraus from AZ Druck und Datentechnik GmbH in Kempten came away the winner, with Andreas Will from the same company and Jan Jungwirth from Engelhardt Etikett in Nördlingen as runners-up. Florian Kraus will therefore represent Germany next year at the WorldSkills International competition from 14 to 19 October 2017 in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

The German competition was held in the Print Media Center of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). The participants were given two hours to produce a print job revealed to them during the competition. The jury – Harry Belz from Bundesverband Druck und Medien, Dietmar Meier, Head of Training from Mohn Media, and Josef Schmid from the public Berufsschule I in Kempten– scored the participants on their approach to color blending, the total time needed, and the quality of the printed product. The jobs were printed on a Speedmaster SX 52 five-color press with coating unit. Enn Kerner, Managing Director of Grafitek in Tallinn (Estonia), and Roman Silkin from the Technical College for Printing and IT

Technology in Novosibirsk (Russia) were invited to observe the proceedings. Both gained valuable experience from the national competition and got an opportunity to exchange information and ideas with the printing experts. They will be able to put this valuable know-how to use in 2019 when the WorldSkills competition is held in Kazan for the first time.

“The WorldSkills competition for industrial and craft occupations center on the Olympic ideal, an understanding among nations, and a test of ability of the best from all the nations. It evaluates the discipline of printing technology and demonstrates the attractiveness of the print media technology as a career path,” asserts Bernhard Nahm.

15 nations will be competing in the print media technology discipline in Abu Dhabi.

Participating for the first time will be Russia, Thailand, and Zambia. Over 76 nations in total will complete in 50 disciplines.

Labelexpo India 2016 celebrates biggest-ever edition Held at its new home for the first time, the India Expo Centre in Greater Noida (Delhi NCR), the four-day trade show was its biggest-ever edition and hosted 8,029 visitors.

Labelexpo India 2016 closed its most successful show to date on 20 November.

Billed as the largest dedicated label and package printing event for the South Asia region, Labelexpo India amassed the latest technology and solutions available to printers with over 200 exhibitors occupying the show floor. The show was used as a catalyst for many new product launches with announcements from Atul Papers, Avery Dennison, Bobst, DuPont, Flint Group, GEW, HB Fuller, Konica Minolta, manroland, Monotech Systems, Nilpeter, OMET, PGI Technologies, SPGPrints, UPM Raflatac, Webtech and Zonten.

Endorsed and supported by the Label Manufacturers Association of India, All India Federation of Master Printers, Delhi Printers Association and Authentication Solution Providers’ Association, Labelexpo India also hosted the revered LMAI Avery Dennison Label Awards. The prestigious gongs were given out for excellence in six categories: Flexo, Letterpress, Offset, Combination Printing, Digital and by gold sponsor Avery Dennison. There was a common comment on Day 1 of LabelExpo India 2016 - Kodak has continued on the Drupa momentum and brought Drupa into LabelExpo India 2016. The Kodak booth (L1 @ Hall 5) attracted a considerable amount of attention.

It was just the first day of the show, and a relatively slow one owing to various reasons. However, it was a happening day at the Kodak booth.

They were on a look out for an entry-level machine with minimum of eight-colour configuration with cold foil stamping, relam-delam units and die stations. They found Omet iFlex 10-colour with cold foil unit, relam-delam and two diecutting stations as a perfect solution for their requirement.

Though the machine is an entry-level machine, it has higher degrees of automation than machines of other brands. The iLight feature ensures print cylinder re-registration with a precise laser guide. It makes the operation extremely simple.

Weldon Celloplast, the representative for Omet in the Indian market, has sold two Omet iFlex Label presses.

Weldon announced its first sale of Omet iFlex on the first day of LabelExpo India 2016 to Huhtamaki PPL Webtech Labels.

The press was being exhibited for the first time after LabelExpo Europe in 2015. The iFlex is simple-to-use and quick at setup. It also contains several innovations to ease a printer’s work, including laser-assisted pre-register and register setting devices that speed up the machine setup and rebooting after job change. Featuring a short web-

path, it saves on startup and is capable of producing saleable print with as less as 20m startup waste of stock. It can handle substrates from 5.5 to 18-inches. Huhtamaki is to receive the Omet iFlex press for its new plant in India by January 2017.

The second Omet order was for the machine showcased at LabelExpo India 2016 stand of Omet. The order for the press was placed on the second day of the show. Insight Graphics will install the press at its Kolkata facility.

The recent machine will be Homemade Bakers’ third Nilpeter. They will be using the press to catch with seasonal demand for converting and printing cones, laminating and foil. The baking company is in business of laminating paper and aluminium foil in-house for making biscuit cones for ice creams. The recent press will be installed by January 2017.

At the show, it focused Lombardi Synchroline, UV Flexo Press. It is a narrow web Flexo /Screen /Combination press capable of printing on an extensive range of materials. This Flexo printing machine uses from 1 to 16 colours for printing purpose with a special flatbed device for special applications such as hot foil stamping and creasing carton boxes. It is characterized by a smart setting and maintenance and control of the printing register, that adjust in real time any micrometrical deviations, allowing printing on different material.

Pressure sensitive self adhesive labels are what they intend to do with the Lombardi.

“The in-mould labeling is a plus point. We can run up to 12 micron films on the machine, which would give us an edge especially in the shrink sleeve market,” adds Sashank. The duo expect to increase their turnover by 125% with the new acquisition.

The Synchroline range of machines from Lombardi is governed by brushless motors and the setting and maintenance of the printing register of the whole press is undertaken by the electric board with a system of register control. This enables real time correction in any deviation in register due to material extension etc. With the capability to run 450mm with paper, adhesive paper or extensible films, it is capable of operating at a speed of 220 meters per minute optimally.

One of the major attractions at our booth is the digital supermarket, where visitors could see first-hand, the various application possibilities for label and packaging converters. Our key highlight was the Brand Innovation Summit, where we were able to share insights with brand managers and owners, helping them understand the challenges and opportunities of the label industry. Four of my customers are present here and they are displaying what they have achieved with their HP Indigo. It’s basically

Excell Graphics and Mangalam Creations install Lombardi machines Lombardi Synchroline and its Indian representative Vinsak had a successful Labelexpo India 2016. Excell Graphics of New Delhi has invested in a Lombardi Synchroline 430 and Bengaluru-based Mangalam Creations has chosen a Lombardi Synchroline 330 at the show.

Mangalam Creations is a part of the Venkateshwara Packagings group based out of Bengaluru and have been in the field of corrugation and offset printing before jumping onto the label printing bandwagon with a brand new all Italian Lombardi Synchroline 330 narrow-web flexo printing press sold to them by Vinsak, the leading supplier in India for the flexo industry.

Chetan Kothari, the leading man from the company pointed out that they have been providing labels to their existing customers by outsourcing it from the market. “With the increase in orders and also the potential in the labels field, we have chosen Lombardi narrow web press for our needs,” he said.

The Lombardi Synchroline 330 is equipped with UV along with chill drum, servo-driven and other advanced features. The machine is

capable of running a paper width of 350 mm (print width 330 mm), unwinding diameter of 1000 mm and a maximum speed of 220 meters per minute. The machine is capable of printing on paper, adhesive paper as well as extensible films.

With a facility spanning about 5000 sqr. ft., Mangalam expects to convert approximately 100,000 running meters in the next six months.

With an aim to expand in the flexible segment, Excell has invested in the latest Lombardi. The machine was showcased at the LabelExpo India 2016. The machine accepts rolls in sizes up to 450, has a preregister system, a Corona treatment unit, a Lombardi patented Air Blade System (ABS), and a servo motor on each of the eight units of the press. Other features include lamination, cold foil, slitter, two die-cutting stations.

Monotech Systems has multiple launches at Labelexpo India Monotech Systems launched multiple products not only from its own brand JETSCI made in India project but from the other principals Focus and Labelmen as well.

This was the biggest ever participation of Monotech Systems in Labelexpo. A variable data inkjet security printing with slitter rewinder and inspection system; a modular full colour inkjet printing solution; ultra-high speed & quality hybrid inkjet imprinting unit; and a personalized solution for cards were launched by the company.

It was a first time display for Focus Proflex High Performance Servo Label Press live at the expo. Also, the Taiwan giant Labelmen got introduced to the Indian labels and packaging market.

The modular full colour inkjet printing machine for label production can be integrated with an existing flexo printing press or finishing and converting machines.

With a printing width of up to 330mm and top speed of 70m/min, it features an advanced RIP engine, CMYK process colour, UV LED and lamp curable inks, as well as an option to have white, spot or security inks.

The variable data inkjet security printing, slitter rewinder and inspection system, with a web width of 350mm, can operate at a maximum speed of 150m/min. It offers multiple lane inkjet printing, features track and trace modules, UV curing system and static eliminator.

Monotech Systems also launched the JETSCI X1 and X2 series of hybrid inkjet imprinting units that can be retrofitted to any converting, conventional printing press of high speed and quality requirements. With Fujifilm Dimatix Samba printheads that offer

a resolution of 1200dpi, the inkjet unit prints at speed of up to 300m/min. The unit can print with both water-based inks as well as UV-curable inks. The inkjet imprinting station is targeted at printing barcodes, 1D, 2D and QR codes or logical and sequential numbers, variable images, custom fonts and symbols, micro text and security features, full or part page variable features as well as multi-colour printing.

The company also showcased the personalization machine for printing plastic and PVC cards. It is equipped with K-series inkjet printheads. This particular solution could print VDP on plastic cards in one colour at high quality and speeds; and also it can be further upgraded to full colour printing. The cards can be printed at the speed of up to 6500 cards per hour.

From flexo and offset label printing, the Focus Proflex which was live, is a modular printing press which is available with Servo

drive technology (Se version) or line shaft (e Version). The new drop in Cylinders ensure fast set up and consistent quality throughout the press speed. It can be further offered of options for specialized production applications from unsupported films through to small cartons.

Focus had live demo of their flagship Flexo machine at the recent LabelExpo India show. We were told by Mr. Antony Cotton who was present at the show, about the range of Focus solutions that include Digital Inkjet, CI Presses along with Hybrid etc. “We provide British quality products at very competitive rates with excellent support across the globe. We have a large installation base in India. Our machines have been performing here for the last more than 20 years and still going strong and that is exactly where we score a point or two over our competitors,” emphasizes Antony. He feels that to further improve their market penetration and boost installation base, Monotech has been putting best efforts and they would collectively be able to make a difference in near future in this direction.

The ordered KBA RotaJET 130 can print more than 500 million single-colour A4 pages every month. Put into the perspective of book manufacturing, this means that Bookwell Digital Oy will be able to produce several million books per month.

The high-volume press is scheduled to enter full production in Juva/Finland in mid-2017.

More than 80 percent SMBs are looking to digitize paper-based processes small/mid-size businesses admit paper processes waste time – 8 out of 10 pledge to change in 2017 More than 80 percent of small/mid-size businesses (SMBs) want to cut paper out of the way they invoice, report financials, manage legal and human resource forms, and handle other time consuming processes, according to a Xerox survey.

The survey of more than 1,000 companies in the United States, United Kingdom, France and Germany shows respondents expect to make the change during the next 12 months.

Nearly half (46 percent) of respondents confirmed that a significant amount of time is wasted on paper-intensive processes and 6 out of 10 view this as having a major impact on their bottom line. SMBs in Germany (51 percent) and the United States (50 percent) cited they spend the most time, followed by the United Kingdom (43 percent) and France (37 percent).

As SMBs prepare to digitize their paper processes, most will turn to experts for recommendations since only 1 in 5 respondents are aware of existing paper-free solutions in the market. The study shows that 47 percent will go to an office equipment dealer, 1out of 4will look to their IT reseller and 37 percent will turn to the product manufacturer.

“Though this survey did not cover India as a region but we are seeing a similar trend emerge amongst the SMBs here. Not just businesses but the Indian government has made digitization a priority for the nation through their Digital India initiative.” said Balaji Rajagopalan, Executive DirectorTechnology, Channels & International Distributor Operations, Xerox India.

Priorities driving business decisions The survey, conducted by independent market research firm Coleman Parkes Research, shows increasing productivity as a top priority for SMBs, along with growth and reduced printing costs. Other findings include: • Overall, 28 percent reported they are well advanced with respect to implementing their plans to digitize paper processes, with France (33 percent) being furthest along.

• U.S. SMBs are lagging in their plans to digitize processes with 41 percent citing they have just started, compared to the average (37 percent).

• Twelve percent of all SMBs are one to three years away from implementation.

• In addition to focusing on digitization and automation, SMBs are also exploring other areas to improve productivity, including: • Managed Print Services (MPS): Of the SMBs surveyed, 42 percent have an MPS contract, while 40 percent said they plan to put an MPS contract in place within the next year. Sixty-six percent spend more than$1,000 USD each month for printing activities, a significant cost of doing business.

Companies with MPS contracts cited reduced costs, decreased paper consumption and improved tracking of print costs as top benefits.

• Mobility: By the end of 2017, 23 percent of SMBs believe mobile devices will be completely integrated with their workflow processes. Today, 66 percent of SMBs include mobile printing in their mobility initiatives, while 27 percent plan to within the next year. The main drivers include increasing productivity of mobile workers, meeting customers’ needs for remote information, and improved and

faster customer service.

Security: It’s becoming increasingly important for SMBs to secure businesscritical information across all technology with the rapid growth of data. As a result, 56 percent of SMBs currently include printers and/or multifunction printers in their security strategies.

SMBs in the United States and Western Europe spend $40 billion USD annually on office equipment and related print services1.

Helping these businesses improve their processes has been a major focus for Xerox.

The company has introduced a variety of solutions to help SMBs automate processes, improve mobility and reduce printing costs through MPS. Xerox’s ConnectKey technology automates manual paperdependent processes and makes it easier for mobile users to collaborate and work more effectively, even outside of the office.

Xerox also leverages partnerships with Cisco and McAfee for a multi-layered approach to securing printers.

Survey methodology 1,021 SMBs with annual revenue ranging from less than $6 million USD to more than $305 million USD took part in a detailed online survey completed in September 2016. The “2017 Office Productivity Trends to Improve the Bottom Line” survey was completed by independent thirdparty Coleman Parkes Research and commissioned by Xerox. Respondents were senior business managers in operations, finance and IT, along with small business owners. The SMBs taking part had between 50 and 1,000 employees, and were based in the United States, United Kingdom, France and Germany. 293 companies took part from the United States.

As the consumption of confectionery and bakery products continues to rise, so do the expectations of consumers. Not only do they want to be wowed by the taste, but they are also becoming choosier as far as the packaging is concerned. And this is forcing manufacturers of confectionary and baked goods to be more creative and efficient. The good news is that packaging producers and machine manufacturers are able to help out with material-conserving packaging solutions and more efficient production lines.

The confectionery industry goes to enormous lengths to sway consumers with its products. Packaging chocolate and similar delights in appetising wrappers and allowing the product to speak for itself are no longer enough these days. To entice the consumer, manufacturers today are digging deeper into their box of tricks. The latest trends include fun videos and commercials for their products that consumers

can watch in the process of consumption. One of the pioneers of “snackertainment”, in which the real and the digital worlds merge, is food giant Nestlé. In a marketing campaign with Internet leader Google, it has the red rectangular wrappers of “have-a-break” KitKat printed with QR codes that lead straight to the manufacturer’s own “YouTube my Break” channel.

This is where users are entertained in a variety of ways – and thus cleverly hooked by the product.

What makes the campaign different is that the striking KitKat logo with its strong brand identity has been removed from its central position on the wrapper for this special edition and replaced by YouTube.

In addition, Google’s Android operating system, in the wake of Cupcake, Donut, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, was given a brand name in the shape of KitKat for the first time in history. It is an open secret in the industry that Nestlé dug deep into its pocket for the privilege. This way the group is underlining something that experts and studies have recently repeatedly found: that the package is of supreme importance today in communicating the brand –

particularly in the confectionery sector. “With increasing product diversity, competition is getting tougher. If you want success on the confectionery market, you have to present your product well,” says Torben Erbrath of Germany’s Association of the Confectionery Industry (BDSI).

This applies all the more as the selection of sweets and bakery products at the point of sale is constantly growing. The existing products with traditions going back many years are being supplemented more and more by sugar-free or sugar- and fat-reduced confectionery. The range of confectionery suitable for vegetarian or vegan diets is also on the increase. In addition, confectionery that is gluten- or lactose-free or even halal or kosher can now be found in almost any supermarket. In the snack sector, says BDSI, the palette is growing in diversity and with a huge variety of flavours – whether in nuts, deep-fried or baked salty snacks. “Thanks to this vast diversity, there’s a matching product for every consumer,” says Erbrath. “The package paves the way into the shopping trolley.” Package designers are therefore faced with a difficult task. They have to publicise the snack with memorable slogans across all possible media and showcase it on the shelves with attention-grabbing colours and shapes.

Alternatives to classical packaging materials making increasing inroads into the marketplace When jostling for position, it is best not to overdo it. Because making excessive use of materials and hence resources does not go down well with the consumer. “Customers are attaching growing importance to keeping their ecological footprint as small as possible. And they also have a strong desire for healthy, ultra-fresh foods that also come in high-convenience and attractive packages,” says Andreas Steinle of the Zukunftsinstitut (Future Institute), a think tank for trend and future research. But industry should do without overly flamboyant and elaborately produced packages for economic reasons as well as ecological ones. The cost not only of raw materials such as milk, cocoa and sugar, but also of energy and packaging materials is steadily rising.

To lastingly attract consumers who want sustainably produced goods and prevent

the cost of materials and production from spiralling out of control, industry has no alternative but to economise on materials and above all avoid excessively extravagant packages while also reducing energy input in production. The fact that material downsizing is possible is illustrated by studies by pacproject, an international firm of consultants. As an example, it has taken a close look at the historic Corny muesli bar wrappers and discovered that the product’s aluminium barrier film wrapper has been steadily reduced in the last 30 years and finally replaced by a new composite barrier material – without detriment to the product.

“Even without full barrier protection, the Corny bar was still in a very good qualitative condition at the end of its sell-by date. And this raised the question whether the cereal bar actually needs the level of protection and barrier effect provided by current films,” says pacproject packaging engineer Alexander Witt.

Alternatives to classical packaging materials like aluminium and plastics are already making increasing inroads into the marketplace. Under its Greenbox label, Bionatic, for example, has developed its first range of some 250 different packaging solutions using renewable or recycled resources such as wood, cellulose, bioplastics and palm leaf. Many of these solutions are biodegradable or can be incinerated pollution-free, says Bionatic founder Robert Czichos. And their production is straightforward: “A single leaf is converted into package by first cleaning it with a highpressure water jet. And then it is moulded on exposure to heat in a mechanical press. So it’s a kind of deep-drawing process. This is followed by finishing in which the edges are smoothed and the surfaces polished. And that is pretty well it.”

Meanwhile scientists are searching for further alternative materials. In the context of its ThermoWhey project, the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging (IVV) is working on a production process for barrier coatings made of whey protein capable of replacing conventional oil-based polymer coatings. The advantage of whey is that its ingredients are naturally capable of extending the shelf life of foods. However, whey is heat-sensitive, so researchers first have to find a coating formulation that can also be processed at high temperatures.

Machine manufacturers will also be present in Düsseldorf with numerous innovations. “Manufacturers of foodprocessing and packaging machines accord high priority to handling natural resources responsibly and managing their processes with minimal environmental impact. They know how important sustainable production processes are for customers,” says Vera Fritsche, expert at the association for food processing machines and packaging machines within VDMA (Mechanical Engineering Industry Association).

In confectionery production, Fritsche continues, there is still plenty of room for optimisation. Intelligent control and automation technologies and energy-efficient drives, compressors, fans and pumps are some of the classical solutions for saving electricity and other resources and boosting energy-efficiency. Efficient motors perfectly adapted to machine movements and acceleration processes reduce power consumption. In addition, says Fritsche, innovative and optimised processes cut the consumption of energy and water, while innovative machine designs extend service and maintenance intervals and service life and thus save energy.

Swiss plant manufacturer Bühler, one of the prime movers in efficient processing solutions, has set itself the goal of reducing

energy consumption in all of its core processes by at least a further 20 per cent by 2020. “This way we can both raise the energy-efficiency of our products and also do our bit for environmental protection at the same time,” says Ian Roberts, the Group’s Chief Technology Officer. He sees a central aspect here in productivity – by shortening cycle times, for example. Additionally, Bühler is redoubling its efforts to improve the energy efficiency of existing customer installations.

Because of the numerous process steps such as cleaning, roasting, debacterising, crushing and grinding the cocoa beans, chocolate manufacture is highly complex and costly. Bühler pledges to slash energy costs in cocoa processing by 65 per cent if customers make use of the company’s free energy audit and also adopt its shell burning technology. The audit is used for tracking down energy leaks in the production process. As an alternative to the direct disposal of the shells, the new combustion system exploits the energy obtained from the shells for roasting and debacterising, so no heating energy has to be bought in.

Theegarten-Pactec is also pushing vigorously ahead with machine solutions that help customers cut their costs. The company is focusing among other things on “Industry 4.0”, i.e. the digitalisation of production and streamlined human-machine and machinemachine communication with the aid of the latest software. “Making production processes transparent, keeping key data retrievable at all times, analysing them correctly and ultimately deciding on the appropriate course of action holds great potential for boosting efficiency,” says Markus Rustler, Theegarten’s Managing Partner. For this purpose, the company started back in 2011 to overhaul its user interface and the associated data processing for the machine operator and management.

“We have thus created a platform that makes the performance of our systems more transparent. For example, it is possible to establish correlations between efficiency losses and time, ambient temperature or other parameters. And this helps operators to track down errors and to find their own solutions,” says Rustler. Furthermore, the intuitive support of maintenance and cleaning processes has been optimised – with active service and maintenance interval reminders from the machine itself, for example. The advantage of automation and digitalisation

is that the machinery linked into complex communication systems can be operated by fewer operators, in some cases even only one. And by integrating the user interface into mobile consumer devices, the data from the machinery can be accessed and even edited from anywhere in the world, says Rustler.

The Swiss company Knobel Maschinenbau, a specialist in machines for chocolate manufacture, helps producers to cut costs in other ways. It sells its equipment – moulding lines, stand-alone depositors and other devices – on the modular principle so that customers can extend their production step by step and, if required, re-equip their production locally segment-wise. This offers

them high flexibility and thus permits rapid and efficient changeover to new products.

Swift re-equipping has also been made possible by simply integrating new machines in the system on the plug-and-play principle, Knobel explains.

With numerous efficiency-boosting innovations, machine manufacturers have attuned themselves to the requirements of manufacturers of confectionery and bakery products. This gives the latter plenty of scope not only in their choice of packaging materials, but also in the modernisation of their lines. And at interpack, they can find out all about these innovations.

The trend in labeling plastic containers is toward increasingly thinner foil in the PET segment. Another interesting development is represented by pre-glued sleeve labels.

Special self-adhesive labels offer many customization options. They are now no longer limited to nonreturnable packaging, but instead have also become successfully established on returnable bottles in the beer, water and soft drink area as wash-off labels.

The self-adhesive label is removed in the bottle washer, and then the container can be refilled and labeled anew. “Higher product diversity, short changeover times and smaller batches,” Mr. Richter explained summarizing trends in bottle design.

Highly individual solutions thanks to direct printing This trend is also in line with direct printing.

Regardless of whether PET, HDPE, metal (can) or glass, round container or shaped bottles, digital printing can be applied almost anywhere and provides highly customized solutions. It is all a matter of chemistry between ink and container material. “The print quality of direct printing is getting better all the time, and the speed is increasingly faster,” according to Mr. Richter.

In addition to the general trend to reduce packaging material and toward increased sustainability, the market is also changing in the area of labeling and design technology.

This term from computer science combines two requests from the industry: the customization of products on one hand and the traceability of product paths on the other hand. “For example, labeling technology makes it possible with the application of a QR code on a container to individualize it and trace the product path via use of the code by a consumer,” Mr. Richter explained. The customer in turn has the option of checking the originality and authenticity of the product using a smartphone to scan the QR code.

At the same time, his action is forwarded to the manufacturer who can then enter into the desired interaction with the consumer. What Google, Amazon and Co. can do today can become a reality for the beverage industry tomorrow. In other words, the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, is becoming a topic for beverage manufacturers.

RFID technology, the “identification with the aid of electromagnetic waves”, has already been introduced in the beverage industry.

It serves for authenticity protection on one hand and anti-theft protection on the other hand. In a southern European country, for example, a well-known whiskey distiller consistently employs RFID technology in its high-quality products. An RFID transponder is hidden in the back label, which can trigger an alarm at an attempted theft, for example.

“Using RFID technology is very easy with modern labeling technology. However, transponder costs remain an issue,” Mr. Richter added.

Despite all the new developments, there is continuity to see at drinktec 2017. The good old paper label definitely still has a future.

It can be processed at high speeds, looks good and will remain in the market for the foreseeable future.

In the second judging round, on 2 November 2016, the jury decided which entries won the Bronzen (bronze), Zilveren (silver) or De Gouden (gold) Noot. In this round each Finalist presented his/her entry to the full jury in a lively debate.

Zircon Technologies invests in SPGPrints rotaLEN direct laser engraver Indian label converter equips for high-volume, narrow-web screen imaging following deal agreement at LabelExpo India 2016 Self-adhesive label converter Zircon Technologies has invested in an SPGPrints rotaLEN direct laser engraver, to provide a digital, efficient prepress workflow for imaging high volumes of rotary screens at its Dehradun (Uttarakhand state) factory.

The sale was agreed at Labelexpo India on the Stovec stand where the full range of SPGPrints’ solutions for labels was being presented.

The rotaLEN engraver offers fast, clean, high-definition (HD) screen imaging with minimal manual intervention. These characteristics make it an ideal solution to complement Zircon’s Omet Varyflex V2 press that incorporates three rotary screen units for value-adding label enhancements and its newly ordered10-colour Omet XFlex with two rotary screen units. The rotaLEN will have the capacity to supply screens for both presses.

The rotaLEN engraver features CO2 lasers that burn the emulsion on the mesh, in a dry, single-step and fully digital process requiring no chemicals, film, or exposure / drying processes.

The laser precision and control of the accompanying RIP software enables outstanding levels of resolution, sharpness, tonal gradation and contrast. Cosmo Films launches Universal Lidding Films for all thermoformed plastic containers Cosmo Films, manufacturer of speciality BOPP films has launched BOPP based Universal Lidding Films suitable for heat sealing to any of the rigid thermoformed cups/containers made up of PP/HIPS/PET/ PVCor PE. The films are generally used for lidding of unit packs of packaged drinking water, juice, yogurt, jelly, jam, marmalade, butter etc., as well as trays used for packing salads, meals and fresh fruits etc.

Global Bioplastics production capacities continue to grow despite low oil price Stronger political support needed to realise full potential of bio-based materials in Europe The results of European Bioplastics’ annual market data update, presented at the 11th European Bioplastics Conference in Berlin, confirm a stable growth of the global bioplastics industry. “The market is predicted to grow by 50 percent over the coming years despite the low oil price,” says François de Bie, Chairman of European Bioplastics.

The global bioplastics production capacity is set to increase from around 4.2 million tonnes in 2016 to approximately 6.1 million tonnes in 2021. Packaging remains the largest fields of application for bioplastics with almost 40 percent (1.6 million tonnes) of the total bioplastics market in 2016. The data also confirms a decisive increase in the uptake of bioplastics materials in many other sectors, including consumer goods (22 percent, 0.9 million tonnes) and applications in the automotive and transport sector (14 percent, 0.6 million tonnes) and the construction and building sector (13 percent, 0.5 million tonnes), where technical performance polymers are being used.

“The data illustrates an important trend, driven by changing consumer demands, to make plastic products more resource efficient and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the dependency on fossil resources,” explains de Bie. “This trend is the result of substantial investments in research and development by the many innovative small and large companies that concentrate their strengths on the development of biobased products designed with the circular economy in mind.”

Bio-based, non-biodegradable plastics, such as polyurethanes (PUR) and dropin solutions, such as bio-based PE and bio-based PET, are the main drivers of this growth, with PUR making up around 40 percent and PET over 20 percent of the global bioplastics production capacities.

More than 75 percent of the bioplastics production capacity worldwide in 2016 was bio-based, durable plastics. This share will increase to almost 80 percent in 2021.

Production capacities of biodegradable plastics, such as PLA, PHA, and starch blends, are also growing steadily from around 0.9 million tonnes in 2016 to almost 1.3 million tonnes in 2021. PHA production will almost quadruple by 2021 compared to 2016, due to a ramp-up of capacities in Asia and the USA and the start-up of the first PHA plant in Europe. With a view to regional capacity development, Asia will further expand its role as major production hub. In 2021, more than 45 percent of bioplastics will be produced in Asia. Around a quarter of the global bioplastics production capacity will be located in Europe.

Bioplastics are a growing, innovative industry that offers solutions for a sustainable plastics economy and that plays a key role in the transformation to a bio-based circular economy. Yet, despite these advantages, the data shows that the overall growth of the global bioplastics industry is currently being slowed down by the low oil prices and a lack of political support for the bio-based economy.

“A European policy framework that secures equal access to bio-based resources within the bioeconomy and that creates a level playing field for bio-based materials and conventional materials is of paramount importance,” says Hasso von Pogrell, Managing Director of European Bioplastics.

“As is the acknowledgement of the facilitating role of compostable plastics and other innovative materials designed for circularity during their use and end-of-life for making waste stream management more efficient. We therefore urge EU legislators to consider the many benefits of bio-based

materials in the implementation of the EU Circular Economy Package and to support initiatives to develop a global carbon-pricing mechanism to incorporate the external costs of climate change into product prices and that way enable the market penetration of greenhouse gas saving materials like bioplastics,” concludes von Pogrell.

The market data update 2016 has been compiled in cooperation with the research institute nova-Institute (Hürth, Germany).
