Young Indian Professionals create history From Madurai to Minnesota (USA) – Mohan Venkat and Ganesh Kumar are first Indian Professionals to be selected in 2019 ‘Technical Association of Graphic Arts’ conference. Mohan Venkat and Ganesh Kumar of Madurai create history for being the first Indian Professionals to be selected in 2019 ‘Technical association of graphic arts’ conference to be held at Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA this coming March. The conference being held since 1948 is considered to be very prestigious among researchers, scientists, engineers and technologists who work with printing technology and colour science. Mohan and Ganesh have jointly developed a compact, reliable tool which can detect colorblindness at a very early stage. The tool named ‘Dalton’ is also considered to be cost effective against the current expensive tool to detect colorblindness. Ganesh and Mohan say that this is a big milestone achieved by Indian researchers.

The booklet is under evaluation in schools, screening camps to check the repeatability & reliability of the booklet. If it’s approved by Indian Optometry Foundation (IOF), soon many children who are color blind can be detected at earlier age and their career aspiration can be handled better.

Ganesh Kumar is working at Heidelberg as product manager for sheetfed & digital. The technical paper by Ganesh and Mohan has been selected for 2019 TAGA conference. Out of 35 papers, only one is from India. This paper will be presented at TAGA International Conference on 17th March 2019. The idea of the paper is to find cost effective and easy tool to detect color blindness. The co-author of this paper, Mohan Venkat, is color vision deficient. He aspired to became a pilot, but got rejected due to his colour vision deficiency. So he studied optometry at Sankara Nethralaya to learn about color blindness and his lifelong passion is to create cost effective tool for detecting color blindness.

Key Notes : > Globally, 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women have colorblindness. > Mohan and Ganesh have jointly developed a compact, reliable tool which can detect colorblindness at a very early stage. > ‘Dalton’ is considered cost effective against the current expensive tool to detect colorblindness.

Currently used detective tool (Ishihara booklet) is printed in paper and is expensive(35000 RS). The

life & quality of the tool also reduces due to aging of paper. Also only big hospitals have this tool and they use it occasionally. So Ganesh and Mohan thought about creating a color blindness detection booklet which is affordable, easy to use and has long life. They tested different substrates (synthetic paper, PE, PP etc) and different digital printing processes to find the right substrate and right printing processes. They compared Dry electrophotography presses, Liquid electrophotography, UV Inkjet on synthetic paper. Color management plays a important role as it is a color evaluation tool. The booklet was tested for rub resistance, scratch resistance, water proof etc. Upon evaluating the printed tool with color blind people they found Dry electrophotography as the most economic & high quality tool. The booklet is under evaluation in schools, screening camps to check the repeatability & reliability of the booklet. If it’s approved by Indian Optometry

Foundation (IOF), soon many children who are color blind can be detected at earlier age and their career aspiration can be handled better. The Technical Association of the Graphic Arts has released the list of papers that will be presented at its 2019 Annual

Technical Conference to be held March 17-20 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 35 presentations and two posters will cover a myriad of research projects and innovations in graphic communications from a study of the ability to recycle inkjet printed products to breakthroughs in digital textile printing. The conference is presented in conjunction with

the Inter-Society Color Council (ISCC). The Technical Association for the Graphic Arts is an international association of academic and industry professionals dedicated to scientific research and technological innovation in all aspects of the diverse field of graphic communications.

About Ganesh and Mohan at Heidelberg India Ltd. He also awarded as “Best Young Manager” by Madras Management Association. Ganesh Kumar has a 15+ years of successful career in graphic arts industry, with specialization in product management, sales & marketing, colour management consultation with local & international companies. Ganesh Kumar, a qualified Printing technology professional from Anna University, with Gold medal distinction is currently heading the product management division

Mohan Venkat, on other hand is a qualified Optometrist, presently heads Sphere Sight Pvt Ltd as the Director. Mohan has 7 patents with respect to eye care diagnostic tools.

Mohan did Optometry under Elite school of Optometry, Sankara Nethralaya & Bits, Pilani. His start-up sphere sight pvt ltd has been recognized by the Indian government and also being featured on the top 500 emerging R&D startups in India. Mohan along with Dr.Krishna Kumar, Principal –Elite school of Optometry launched the first & only organization for colorblind people in India named colourvision.org.in. This organization provides complete information, career guidance and management modules for children’s and people with colorblindness.

Mohan and Ganesh say that people in India are not being screened for colorblindness

at the earliest stage in their life. This leaves millions of Indian children who are colorblind

to get rejection in the careers where they dreamed to join.

Facts about colorblindness: What is colorblindness? And why we should be aware of this condition?

in seeing different colours through our eyes.

Colorblindness is a genetic disorder which reduces the ability of a person to see wide range of colors. Globally, 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women have colorblindness. In other words, for every 12 men 1 will be colorblind and for every 200 women, 1 will be colorblind. Many of us think that people with colorblindness could see only black & white! But that’s completely wrong. People who are colorblind will also see colours, but very limited range of colours. For example, people with color blindness often tend to confuse between red and green, yellow and green, brown & red and if a normal person could appreciate violet , indigo , dark blue in a single picture, for colorblind person the picture contains just ‘blue’ color.

Is there any treatment for this condition?

In India there are many people who are colorblind, but they are unaware of it. This scenario still exists in our society because ‘colorblindness’ being a condition in human, dosen’t affect our body like other medical conditions and diseases. There is a limitation

10

January 2019

Currently there is no cure for colorblindness, as this is a genetic condition and surgical correction will be very complex. However researchers worldwide are studying the possibilities of gene therapy to cure color blindness, they have conducted studies on monkeys, which were successful, however it will take some time to be tested in humans.

What does colorblindness do with my career? It a wonderful question. Many of the parents and students do not realize that in India and majority of other countries, colorblindness is a serious consideration when people apply for many jobs which involve color identification, color classification or to work with color signaling systems. Let’s take an example, a school going student, who is colorblind is very passionate to become as a police officer after graduation. His dream is to serve as Indian police service officer.

Consider this small example for instance: A Police officer witnesses a theft and he has to report it to his fellow mates in the police department. Here he has to submit the details of the theft which includes color of the suspect’s dress, the color of the vehicle which the suspect used, Color of suspect’s hair, skin etc... And in many situations there is a mere possibility of getting help from his co- officers. Similarly if we consider the job of a pilot, Indian armed forces officer, marine engineer etc…they all have to use color signaling systems day in and out to safe guard their life as well as many people who depend upon them.

What is the situation of colorblind students in India today? Many students who are colorblind, pursue their higher education in colorblindness restricted careers. Most of these students end up with career rejection, else to join in alternate jobs or with de promotion/no promotion, it is because people who employ them are very cautious about the risks involved with them.

List of careers where colorblind candidates are neglected: Pilot, Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Airforce, Indian Police service (IPS), Fire fighter, Marine engineering, Electrical engineering, Forensic science, Indian Railways, Chemical/Petro-chemical engineering, Maritime Industry, Color research, Air traffic controller, Baggage handling officer, Quality Inspector in manufacturing Industries, Color matcher in textile, print & paint industries, Leather Industry, Art work restorer, Cartography, Jobs under film & television Institute of India (FTII) and Safety & Security Inspector.

If you have colorblindness, you cannot join in these careers! Today, in India, many people are neglected in these jobs. Many people clear their written examination, physical examination but at the end during medical examination they get neglected. This situation was reckoning in the mind of young Mohan Venkat and Ganesh Kumar. The problem is that people in our country are not aware that they might be colorblind. Today, colorblindness testing happens only through eye hospitals upon demand. There is no proper tool to detect colorblindness at the earliest stage. That is when Mohan Venkat joined hands with Mr. Ganesh Kumar to create the reliable tool named ‘Dalton’s’. Today Dalton’s is being used across various eye hospitals in our country. Most of the eye hospitals have started screening for color blindness among school children through eye camps. The tool ‘Dalton’s’ developed by Mohan and Ganesh has not only made them proud but also it’s a big moment for our country. Mohan says that ‘Colorblindness’ isn’t a disease and people could easily cope with challenges faced by them.

Some of the very common challenges include: •

• • •

12

Every electrical device which uses LED lights to indicate something is a permanent source of annoyance. Colored maps and graphics can sometimes be very hard to decipher. If meat is cooked can’t be told by its color. And you can’t tell if a fruit or vegetable

January 2019

•

is ripe or not yet. If you a have a color vision defect you can’t just choose flowers which fit together nicely, or a painting which fits with the furniture, or a carpet. You also can’t create a web site or an image with nicely matching colors. And you will never be able to easily match your shirt with your tie, your trousers with your shoes, your whole wardrobe. In this case you need a pair of color enabled eyes which help you out (i.e. your family, friends could help you out). By far the biggest issue is matching colors and specially matching clothes. People who are colorblind might confuse with the field sports where two teams play, such as Hockey, Cricket, Football etc.…They get confused when they notice teams with quite similar uniforms. Also in sports and games like Billiards, Snooker, Darts, Archery and similar

•

sports where color targets are involved, there will be confusion in spotting the right targets. Yet there are many people in sports with colorblindness who overcome all this small odds and achieve their goals! During childhood, a colorblind child might feel uncomfortable seeing and naming a particular color. Both teachers and parents might misunderstand that the child is not learning the colors properly. But here the scenario is quite different. Colorblind children confuse with colors in their art class, may not be able to play color based games, may not be able to pick the correct color crayon if asked, Rainbows appear to them only with a maximum of 3-4 colors based upon the type of CVD, they feel difficulty in telling the colors of plants, clothes, leaves, fruits, vegetables and flowers. The actual fact might still be unknown unless otherwise the child is being diagnosed.

Interesting facts! Did you ever know that new traffic signal lights are made for colorblind people? Earlier days colorblind individuals were handicap to traffic signals, they used to confuse between green/yellow and red. Many countries even refused to permit a driving license for colorblind people. But thanks to the traffic signaling systems used today, this system is made specially for colorblind people, and today colorblind community has a safe journey in India with respect to the traffic signal lights.

Today various technological tools help people with colorblindness to help cope up with their work. Few of the technological tools include, Software and mobile applications to help people with colorblindness to work seamlessly with computers just like the normal people. And there are many solutions crafted & tailored specifically for individual jobs. But to provide all this tangible solutions, people must be tested and screened for colorblindness first says Mohan. Interestingly, Mohan himself is colorblind. He aspired to join the Indian Airforce fleet when in school, collected airplane toys and has met many

of the officers of the Indian Airforce when in school. As Mohan was preparing to join Indian Airforce, luckily he got diagnosed for colorblindness, thanks to Dr.Vijayalakshmi of Arvind Eye care, Madurai. In spite of knowing his condition as a major setback for his ambition, Mohan then pursued Optometry at Sankara Nethralaya and hereby Mohan’s dream is to solve this burden of career rejection of color blind people in our country through technologies and high level research on colorblindness. As parents, teachers and emerging students, we should have colorblindness tested as early to avoid career rejections says Mohan and Ganesh.

Komori H-UV crosses 1000 presses landmark Komori’s H-UV system series achieves the milestone of orders exceeding 1,000 printing presses. Komori Corporation has announced the milestone by its highly successful H-UV innovative curing system, which has reached over 1,000 printing presses installed world over. In India Komori has sold twenty two machines which can print on H UV enabled presses. The Komori H-UV system is an innovative UV curing system that uses a UV lamp/LED module developed with Komori know-how and high-sensitivity UV ink. With just one lamp/LED module mounted in the delivery, this system offers high print quality and reliability as well as excellent economic and eco-friendly performance. The H-UV system has been in worldwide use since it was released in 2009. In 2011, it was honoured with a technology award by the Japanese Society of Printing Science and Technology (JSPST) as a technology that has made an outstanding contribution to the growth of the printing industry or to the development of applications for other fields. It also received the 2011 InterTech Technology Award that honours the development of technologies predicted to have a major impact on the graphic arts and related industries. In recent years, the H-UV L (LED) version has joined the lineup, improving printing efficiency by further reducing power consumption and the maintenance load.

As of January 2019, orders for H-UV system in the 10 years since launch have totaled 1,002 presses, including 527 in Japan and 475 abroad. The H-UV system enables immediate postpress processing and high added value printing on special substrates or package printing thanks to its instant curing performance. Following the rapid change in the printing industry in recent years of more short runs of many different items and quick turnarounds, it has gained high a solid reputation as shown by the many repeat orders from customers who installed the H-UV system. Additionally, Komori total support helps maintain high print quality, reduces common

problems and lowers costs since all K-Supply brand consumables for the H-UV systemare supplied by Komori. It includes the K-Supply H-UV Ink that is the ideal Komori standard ink. For quality control, the effect of changes in materials tends to be temporary. Komori uses its know-how as a press manufacturer to ensure quality control by not only supplying materials but also through recommending and providing machine maintenance. Most of Komori customers have benefited from this technology and they can save 75% on power on their presses. Komori sees that the HUV technology is there to stay along with the new HUV L (the LED HUV) presses in India.

Heidelberg takes Masterwork partnership to new level Heidelberg steps up activities in packaging market and gains potential strategic anchor shareholder; Masterwork to obtain around 8.5 percent of the Heidelberg share capital under a cash capital increase from authorized capital.

Subject to approval by the relevant bodies on both sides and the Chinese authorities, the capital measure should provisionally take place by the end of the first calendar quarter of 2019.

Key Notes : > Masterwork Group Co., Ltd. from China aiming to use capital increase to obtain a stake in Heidelberg. > Increase in equity ratio set to improve Heidelberg balance sheet. > Closer production collaboration set to boost efficiency.

January 2019

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is looking to further improve its market position in the growing packaging printing segment by taking its long-standing sales partnership with Masterwork Group Co., Ltd. (Masterwork), China’s largest manufacturer of die-cutters and hot-foil embossing machines, to a whole new level. Based in the Chinese city of Tianjin, Masterwork is to obtain around 8.5 percent of the Heidelberg share capital under a cash capital increase from authorized capital excluding shareholder subscription rights. The implementation of such capital measure is subject to approval by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG’s supervisory board. The proposed capital increase provides the opportunity for Heidelberg to acquire a further strategic anchor shareholder with a long-term investment horizon as well as to strengthen its equity. The funds Heidelberg generates with the capital increase are to be used to accelerate its digital

agenda (digitizing products, processes, and business models, for example) and for general business financing. “The Heidelberg Management Board and Supervisory Board are delighted that our long-standing, successful collaboration with Masterwork is to become much closer. This opens up further potential in the growing packaging printing segment, especially in China – the world’s largest individual market. We are expecting better capacity utilization at our plants across the globe to make us far more efficient, but I would like to stress that this will not weaken our sites in Germany. We are delighted that in Masterwork we are obtaining another long-term investor that firmly believes in the company’s innovative prowess, strategy, and potential for the future,” comments Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer. “Heidelberg is our ideal partner for jointly leveraging

pressideas/ commercial printing

growth potential in the packaging printing market. The stake we are obtaining in this long-established company and world market leader underlines that we are in it for the long haul and are confident Heidelberg has adopted the right strategy,” says Masterwork President Li Li. Heidelberg and Masterwork have operated a close postpress partnership for a number of years, turning print products into folding cartons for the packaging market. They also benefit from a long-standing, successful

sales collaboration. Masterwork specializes in postpress equipment for the folding carton industry. Back in 2014, it acquired the postpress packaging technologies of Heidelberg, which retains responsibility for global sales and digital customer relations. The possibility of linking Masterwork’s postpress machines to the Heidelberg cloud is a big advantage when it comes to realizing the value proposition of using production data to boost customers’ productivity.

focusing on the two companies’ value chains. Heidelberg will continue to supply the dynamic markets in China and the rest of Asia from the site in Qingpu, near Shanghai, that it established back in 2006. As a result of the closer working relationship with Masterwork, it will also benefit from joint component manufacturing operations at the Masterwork site in Tianjin in the future. This will provide both companies with a whole host of possibilities for improving their efficiency.

There are also plans for closer collaboration

New Heidelberg Versafire - digital printing generation successfully launched.

The European launch of the new Versafire digital printing generation took place last past spring. Heidelberg launched two new models on the market: the Versafire EV is a flexible production system that is ideally tailored to the requirements of the graphics industry thanks to its creative applications, and enables extended business models, while the highperformance Versafire EP production system scores with stability and maximum performance at high volumes. In summer 2018, the new Versafire models celebrated their premiere in Heidelberg USA’s Print Media Center Atlanta. The visitors were enthusiastic about the new functions, and impressed by the two presses’ priceperformance ratio. The Commercial Days in the Print Media Center Shanghai in October 2018 marked the launch of the presses on the Asian market, where there was also great interest in the Versafire EV and EP. The new presses are now installed and in operation worldwide at many Heidelberg customers.

Heidelberg launched two new models on the market: the Versafire EV - a flexible production system & the highperformance Versafire EP production system with maximum performance at high volumes.

Key Notes : > Customers from Europe, Asia, and the USA excited by new possibilities. > Heidelberg China Commercial Day generates a lot of interest in Asia. > Rindt print shop tapping creative potential for its customers with Versafire EV and rounding off its service portfolio.

January 2019

Creative potential through very good print quality and finishing options One of the first production Versafire EV presses has

been in use at Druckerei Rindt GmbH & Co.KG in Fulda (Hesse) since April 2018. Managing Director Sebastian Jerabeck had spent years looking for a suitable digital printing system to round off the offset printing offering and provide extended services to customers. His initial experiences with digital printing systems from other manufacturers were less than satisfactory. “We regard digital printing as an important part of our offering, we want to use it to round off our portfolio downwards and print short runs,” says Jerabeck in summing up his requirements. “The Versafire EV was the only press to hit the mark for us: the print quality is so good that there is very little difference between the digital and offset prints. A good colour management system means that products combining both methods can also be produced,” confirms Sören Plur, PrePress Team Leader.

Digital printing system rounds off offset printing offering and extends the range of services Rindt print shop regards itself as a problem solver and relies on individual consulting services, especially for complex printed products. This philosophy

is paying off, with the company growing since its establishment in 1931. It invests in the latest printing technology every two to three years, and is planning another production expansion in the offset printing sector for this year. “We have a broad-based market presence and can rely on our more than 70 employees, who are among our most important assets,” says Jerabeck in explaining his recipe for success.

The full-service print shop operates in three shifts, with 80 percent of its deliveries going to German customers, as well as to Austria and Switzerland. Three quarters of the printed products are traditional commercial jobs, however, the company also produces packagings, which is where it is experiencing the strongest growth. The discerning customers come from industry, banks, insurance companies, publishing houses, and advertising agencies. “We regard ourselves as a partner to our customers. For example, a few years ago we repositioned our print shop by relaunching our brand – moving away from the standard print shop and towards a problem solver, and are therefore less replaceable,” explains Jerabeck. The services for customers are constantly being expanded and now include

warehousing and logistics as well as private web stores for major customers. From business cards to advertising material, they can order everything directly online there. Rindt print shop also wants to extend its portfolio with the Versafire EV. It uses an unusual mailing showing the creative possibilities of the press with opaque white, coating, and neon pink to inform both its regular customers and new customers. “We want to give our customers the best service, and are therefore investing again in the latest technology,” confirms Jerabeck. “We were impressed by the overall offering with innovative technology and the best service of Heidelberg.”

hubergroup launches globally compliant folding carton food packaging printing ink The MGA NATURA ink series for sheetfed offset food packaging exceeds many European and U.S. regulatory requirements for food packaging. With increasingly strict and regionally variable regulation of printing inks for food packaging, printers have been required to use a variety of inks in order to meet regulatory demands for European and North American markets. This has made already complex supply chains even more complicated as printers strive to comply with specific regulatory requirements for ink migration limits and raw materials that are different from one region to another. To help printers more easily meet this challenge, hubergroup has reinvented its MGA NATURA series with a single ink that complies with all FDA Standards and EC Regulations for folding carton food packaging in one formula. This results in reduced approval cycles and increasing production flexibility for brand owners, while printers and converters no longer need to maintain large stocks of a variety of ink types and undertake costly, time-consuming press wash-ups when packaging is destined for different global regions.

Vertical integration enhances hubergroup ink formulation flexibility The unique ability of hubergroup to develop and manufacture its own customized raw materials was key to this success. Chemists discovered a method for incorporating a well-assessed, fully bio-compatible but in this way yet-unused raw material into its MGA NATURA series ink formula. “Our R&D staff

34

January 2019

did a terrific job, when they invented this single global ink formula!” says Taner Bicer, Chief Technology Officer. “They were able to identify, gain approval for and introduce the substance, while significantly improving printability and lowering migration risks, thus exceeding regulatory requirements in many regions, and meeting stricter requirements in others.”

Migration will be far below the migration limits. Brand owners and printers can be assured that these inks do not include impurities or undesirable substances which could inhibit regulatory compliance of food packaging. The new MGA NATURA inks are globally available commencing in January 2019 and include both process and spot colour inks.

hubergroup’s own strict MGA guidelines for packaging printing inks guarantee that the ink is produced in compliance with all relevant standards –including Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements for printing inks for food contact materials. These new inks consist of substances that will not migrate or which have been approved for food contact.

“We are pleased to be introducing this innovative folding carton ink, the safest packaging ink on the market,” Bicer adds. “No matter where printed folding cartons are headed in the world or from which country ink is sourced, this new MGA NATURA ink will be no restriction for compliance with all relevant regulations.”

The CEFLEX initiative unites almost 100 companies and associations from the entire value chain of flexible packaging – from manufacturers of packaging films and processors (including ink providers), to brand owners, retailers and specialized companies for recycling. “CEFLEX is the most significant and solution-oriented industrial initiative for flexible packaging,” explains Jörg-Peter Langhammer, Head of Global PSR + Sustainability at Siegwerk. “It offers a perfect platform to network and exchange with experts from other areas and to cooperatively shape the future by redesign and innovation, along with the parallel development of a strong infrastructure to collect, sort and recycle flexible packaging. I am firmly convinced that together we can make a real difference.” Siegwerk has joined CEFLEX in 2017 as the first ink provider. Prior to that, the company was already contributing to preliminary projects regarding the future of flexible packaging managed by the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.

The CEFLEX commitment and New Plastics Economy Flexible packaging represents an application area that provides customized product protection at minimum total cost and with the lowest environmental impact – in other words it is very resource efficient. CEFLEX and its stakeholders are fully committed to the goal of 100 percent collection and recycling of all plastic packaging. Working together, the initiative’s underlying goal is to prepare a comprehensive sustainability and

circular economy roadmap for flexible packaging by 2020. Next to design guidelines for flexible packaging in a circular economy this roadmap shall include activity plans for increased resource efficiency as well as measures for the optimized collection of flexible packaging waste and recovery of recyclables. By 2025 CEFLEX wants to establish a collection, sorting and reprocessing infrastructure based on the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly processes, concretely developed for post-consumer flexible packaging across Europe. Alongside with CEFLEX, Siegwerk fully supports the Global Commitment and Common Vision issued by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) on a New Plastics Economy envisaging a future where plastic, including flexible plastic packaging, is never becoming waste and is in line with a circular economy.

Siegwerk’s contribution Siegwerk’s contribution applies to printing inks and varnishes and their essential role in the future of flexible packaging. Today, the company’s experts are participating in three of the seven overall workstreams that were established to achieve CEFLEX’s defined goals. These include: • Design Guidelines for a Circular Economy • Sustainable End Markets • Facilitating Technologies Through its work, Siegwerk contributes to the design guidelines for flexible packaging in a circular economy and the influence of inks and printed layers on the automatic sortability of flexible packaging waste and on recyclates derived from mechanical recycling including extrusion. Together with all other stakeholders, Siegwerk takes the discussion

further and investigates the removal from inks and printed layers during the recycling process (deinking) to improve the quality of the recyclates. Ultimately, Siegwerk is engaged in investigations on ink influence within advanced recycling technologies like chemical recycling where polymers are extracted from pre-sorted post-consumer waste streams. Apart from mechanical recycling many of these advanced recycling technologies haven’t been used on a large scale yet and thus might be promising options for the future. Siegwerk has a wealth of experience with inks for paper & board applications and the corresponding need for ultimate deinkability of inks to support paper recycling. The company offers ink series that are compostable according to DIN EN 13432. Siegwerk also makes every effort to further develop bio-based inks – like the newly- developed water-based ink range UniBio – with an increased share of raw materials based on renewable resources. With its ink series Sicura Litho NutriEco Siegwerk also markets the world’s first low migration UV ink range for cosmetics and food applications that has been awarded Gold status of the “Cradle to Cradle Material Health Certification” by the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA). This means, that these inks are safe for recycling processes and therefore fit well into the circular economy approach.

The first Scodix E106 user collects nine honours at PPC 2018 TPC Printing & Packaging was recognized for outstanding design and production for five different projects, collecting a total of nine different awards. At the 75th North American Paperboard Packaging Competition, TPC Printing & Packaging (Chattanooga, TN) was recognized for outstanding design and production for five different projects, collecting a total of nine different awards. TPC has been a Scodix UltraPro with Foil digital enhancement press user since May 2017, and has recently become North America’s first Scodix E106 system user. In total, TPC collected four “2018 Gold Awards” in the “General” category, four “2018 Gold Awards” in the newly introduced “Digital” category, and one “2018 Excellence Award”. The winners were announced during Paperboard Packaging Council’s (PPC) annual conference at the Whitley Hotel in the Buckhead district of Atlanta. This year’s competition marked the first time digitallyconverted cartons could be adjudicated. The industry’s premier competition for carton manufacturers considers the concept, design, print, performance, and shelf appeal (“wow factor”) of each paperboard packaging entry. Submissions were judged over three days at PPC’s headquarters in Springfield, MA. In all, 130 entries were considered by an eight-member judging panel, which included university professors, brand owners, retired industry executives, and packaging engineers.

“Rise & Shine”: Gold Awards in General and Digital Categories TPC Packaging produces a wide range of high-end custom folding cartons and promotional packaging for customers primarily in the cosmetics, fragrance, spirits and health & beauty markets. They installed the UltraPro to expand the range of effects they could offer their discerning clientele. And it was immediately popular. In fact, the piece TPC Packaging created for the open house event that introduced the new capabilities — titled “Rise & Shine” — to showcase the full range of effects had previously won a national Benny award, as well as a regional Printing Industry Association of the South (PIAS) Best of Show award. At the PPC competition, “Rise & Shine” won a Gold Award in both the General category and the Digital category. “Rise & Shine was an introductory promotional piece, designed to promote this technology, and communicate our new digital capabilities properly with our existing, as well as newly target customers,” said Joseph A.

Schmissrauter III, President, TPC Packaging. “All 10 of our top accounts — which make up the bulk of our revenue — have already been introduced to the technology through the Scodix UltraPro system. We are eager to institute the larger format and increased production speeds of the Scodix E106.”

Awards keep coming In addition, TPC was also honoured with seven more awards: • General and Digital Awards: Munro Premium Scotch Whiskey Gold; • General and Digital Awards: Old Forester 1920 Personalized (Rise + Shine Enhanced) Executive Leader Program Carton; • General and Digital Awards: Spearhead & Greener Planet CIBS Give Away Carton using Rise & Shine Enhancements; • Excellence Award (Silver): Jack Daniels “Old No.7 Legacy Edition” Folding Carton.

RPC introduces cup recycling initiative Helping customers recycle their used cups into valuable second life products. RPC Tedeco-Gizeh, the UK’s sole manufacturer of plastic vending cups, is launching a unique initiative to help customers recycle their used cups into valuable second life products. The company is working with its sister business from the RPC Group, RPC bpi recycled products, so that vending suppliers and operators who collect their own used cups can deliver them to the RPC bpi facility in Dumfries. There they will be reprocessed and blended

with other recycled polymers for use in the manufacture of RPC bpi’s Plaswood. This is a high-performance lumber made from 100% recycled plastic that does not rot, splinter, crack or degrade with age and requires no maintenance. Products manufactured in Plaswood include fences, posts and outdoor furniture. Scotland’s leading vending machine supplier Excel Vending is the first company to make use of this service, collecting cups from its customer base across Scotland. “This is a great initiative,” comments Excel Vending’s managing director Jane McDonald. “The cups are a valuable resource that can be put to good use rather than going to landfill and will help to support our environmental and CSR strategy.”

DOMOTEX 2019: A Report Over 1,400 exhibitors from more than 60 nations came to Hannover to kick off a successful new year of business. The latest edition of DOMOTEX – the global showcase for carpets and floor coverings (January 11 to 14) – has underscored its reputation as one of the biggest and most important hubs for business, innovations and trends in the sector. With close to 90 percent of all attendees having decision-making authority, the caliber of the show’s visitors remained extremely high – a fact confirmed by exhibitors. According to the exhibition survey, the order situation of exhibitors remained constant, while the purchasing volume per visitor went up. About 70 percent of all DOMOTEX attendees once again came from abroad. The figures also revealed an increase in attendance by architects, interior designers and contract business professionals.

The booklet is under evaluation in schools, screening camps to check the repeatability & reliability of the booklet. If it’s approved by Indian Optometry Foundation (IOF), soon many children who are color blind can be detected at earlier age and their career aspiration can be handled better.

January 2019

“Thanks to its strong international drawing power, DOMOTEX serves as the sector’s definitive global marketplace. The positive and optimistic outlook on the 2019 business year that was tangible in the trade fair halls proves the success of this year’s exhibition,” said Dr. Andreas Gruchow, the Managing Board member in charge of DOMOTEX at Deutsche Messe. “Manufacturers and customers as well as partners,

architects and designers from all over the world come together to network at DOMOTEX, spawning new business relationships and collaborative opportunities previously not deemed possible,” remarked Sonia Wedell-Castellano, the new global director for DOMOTEX, adding: “That’s what this year’s theme of CREATE’N’CONNECT is all about.”

Upbeat mood among exhibitors Fabian Kölliker, Head of Marketing at the Swiss Krono Group, voiced early praise for the professional nature of the event: “We are very satisfied with the number, quality and internationality of attendees. Even after day two of the fair, we are already extremely happy with our success so far.” The Balta Group has remained faithful to DOMOTEX since the origin of the fair. As Marketing Director Geert Vanden Bossche reports: “The rug business is a global business and this is the best place to connect with people and customers from around the world. In only four days we can meet with a lot of customers, giving a good return on our investments.” For Myriam Ragolle, Managing Director of Ragolle Rugs, DOMOTEX represents the ideal opportunity

to present the new products to a worldwide audience within just a four-day period: “It is impossible to achieve that by traveling. We can also make contacts with new customers from all over the world. This makes DOMOTEX unique.” Exhibitors from the skilled trades also expressed keen satisfaction with the run of the show: “Here at DOMOTEX 2019, we have once again succeeded in impressing a trade audience from Germany and abroad,” said Julian Utz, CEO of Uzin Utz, adding: “The show’s international focus gives us access to exactly the right potential customers.” As he pointed out, Uzin Utz is strongly focused on Asian and Arab-speaking markets. “So the strong turnout by customers from these regions is a real boon for us.”

The benefits of attending DOMOTEX Susanne Gerken, a Color & Trim designer at Volkswagen, came to DOMOTEX 2019 to catch the latest trends and check out innovative materials. As she pointed out, colour trends and issues such as sustainability, recycling and new material lifecycles are all equally applicable to the automotive industry, and her takeaway was much more than just new impressions: “At DOMOTEX I picked up several ideas I can use to great advantage in my work.” In contrast, business matters were the prime objective for Alex Hosseinnia, CEO of Dallas Rugs in Dallas, Colorado: “My line of work is all about buying and selling,” he said, adding that what he liked about DOMOTEX was the way it made it easy for him to meet up with suppliers, and that it was an ideal place to discover the latest trends and fashions, for

example colors and patterns, that were “likely to be showing up in U.S. retail channels in the course of the next year or two.”

CREATE’N’CONNECT at DOMOTEX 2019 The inspiring “Framing Trends” showcase in Hall 9 proved its worth. In its second year, it once again featured impressive displays of innovative products by manufacturers, artists, designers and students. International architects, designers, planners and influencers were particularly appreciative of “Framing Trends” as the beating heart of the event. The new showcase has proven to be highly effective at bringing visitors together and spawning lively interaction and business dialogue. Under the motto of “Gaining Ground”, the “Treffpunkt Handwerk”” skilled trades hub in Hall 13 proved popular among interior designers, parquet and floor layers, painters and varnishers. The hands-on demo area gave flooring experts an opportunity to see innovative floor treatment and finishing tools and machinery in action while comparing notes with fellow professionals.

Heimtextil 2019 A lively start to the new furnishing season gives hope for a good business year ahead. The international home textiles industry has enjoyed a promising start at Heimtextil in Frankfurt am Main. The challenging economic situation and uncertainty in the retail sector were countered by a positive and confident mood at the world’s leading trade fair.

The booklet is under evaluation in schools, screening camps to check the repeatability & reliability of the booklet. If it’s approved by Indian Optometry Foundation (IOF), soon many children who are color blind can be detected at earlier age and their career aspiration can be handled better.

3025 exhibitors from 65 countries took the international trade fair for home and contract textiles to a 15-year high: ‘Exhibitors and visitors accepted the new trade fair concept with great enthusiasm and confirmed the trade fair’s position as an important meeting place for the industry. The quality of the decision-makers impressed the exhibitors, as did the number of new business contacts from 156 countries, especially international ones – thus enabling Heimtextil to set a new benchmark’, says Detlef Braun, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt. ‘Around 67,500 visitors ensured that there was a busy atmosphere in the halls, despite a slight decline due to various reasons, such as difficult travel conditions on account of the storms in the alpine region and airport strikes in Germany’. One topic that occupied both exhibitors and visitors was the current and future economic situation. A further challenge is the increasingly evident changes that are happening in trade. Increasing revenues and revenue shares in online retailing stand in the way of the efforts made by the stationary retail trade

to maintain their inner-city businesses. ‘The small business specialist trade, but also department stores and multibrand stores, and thus the heart of our visitor target groups, are under pressure from the constantly increasing levels of e-commerce. With Heimtextil and our consumer goods fairs in general, we offer these retailers in particular clear perspectives and diverse inspiration in an ambiguous world’, continues Braun. Heimtextil made it easier for its visitors to access valuable inspiration and business momentum thanks

the new hall 12, which has been an additional architectural highlight on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds since September. Top international companies from the Bed & Bath Fashion segment presented their wares here. For the company Curt Bauer from Aue in Saxony, the première of the new hall was a successful one. ‘We’re very enthusiastic about the new hall 12. The product range there was very well received. We are very satisfied with the quality of visitors to our stand. In addition to a good frequency of German visitors, we are particularly pleased about growth from China and Russia’, says Managing Director Michael Bauer.

to an optimised trade fair concept and the associated new hall structure. ‘The new concept brought more visitors to the stand’, was the feedback from Andreas Klenk, Managing Director of Saum & Viebahn from Kulmbach in Franconia about hall 8.0 which offered textiles editeurs and manufacturers of curtain and sun protection systems a common platform for the first time. ‘It was the right decision to merge the different segments. We had high quality discussions with respect to both export and domestic business, and are satisfied with the trade fair’. As part of the new concept, Heimtextil expanded its unique product range across the entire exhibition site and also included

Natural materials, PET and ocean plastics Heimtextil set a standard in terms of sustainability: after the first global climate protection agreement for the textile industry was signed by 40 leading fashion companies, organisations and associations at the World Climate Conference in Katowice last December, the focus in Frankfurt was also on environmental progress in the textile industry. Numerous exhibitors presented progressive solutions, for example in the recycling of PET bottles and ocean plastic as well as in the use of certified natural materials. ‘Sustainability was the theme for us at this year’s Heimtextil. Major media players visited us and the ‘Green Tour’ guided tour stopped by. We presented many things, including our first vegan duvet and fair silk products, all 100 per cent produced in Austria’, says Denise Hartmann, Marketing Manager at Hefel Textil. The topics of water consumption in the textile industry and microplastics also increasingly came to the fore. The exhibitor directory ‘Green Directory’ alone contained around 150 progressive companies listing sustainably produced textiles. The offer was supplemented by its own lecture series as well as theme-specific tours, which provided valuable impetus and underpinned the pioneering green position of the trade fair.

of the most important building blocks for long-term physical and mental well-being. At Heimtextil, a number of new products and aspects came to the fore that help people become sensitised to and analyse their sleep behaviour and promote healthy sleep. Around the redesigned hall 11.0 and in the adjoining lecture area ‘Sleep! The Future Forum’, representatives from the national and international bed industry enjoyed attractive product presentations and superb speeches on the topics of sustainability, hospitality, sport and digital. In addition to the renowned trend show, the trade fair also focused on contract business, particularly in the hotel and hospitality sector, as well as decorative and upholstery fabrics, digital printing solutions and wallpapers. The next Heimtextil in Frankfurt am Main – its 50th edition – will take place from 7 to 10 January 2020.

Sleep becomes new lifestyle theme Heimtextil also focused on sleep as one of the upcoming lifestyle trends. While a balanced diet and sufficient exercise are now a natural part of a healthy lifestyle, restorative sleep is still neglected* although it is one

Kornit Digital launches Atlas - launches the next-generation direct-to-garment printing platform designed for high-volume production and optimized cost of ownership. Kornit Digital has introduced Kornit Atlas. Following the success of Kornit’s Storm HD6 and Avalanche HD6 / HDK, the Atlas is the first instance of the company’s next-generation direct-to-garment printing platform, providing garment decorators and screen printers a unique tool for mastering the current and future challenges of the textile supply chain. The Kornit Atlas is a heavy-duty system created for super-industrial garment decoration businesses. It was designed to deliver a typical annual production capacity of up to 350,000 impressions, optimizing production efficiency and cost of ownership. The Kornit Atlas is aimed at highly productive garment decorators, mid to large size screen printers and innovative businesses looking to combine state-of-the art technology with lowest cost of ownership. The system is equipped with new recirculating print heads and comes with a newly developed ink, NeoPigment Eco-Rapid. The Kornit Atlas is equipped with a unique printing engine, featuring an enhanced version of Kornit’s HD technology, complemented by a professional RIP (raster image processing) software solution, and produces prints that meet the highest standards of retail quality and durability. The all-new Atlas comes ready for Kornit’s future releases of its cloud-based business intelligence, productivity analytics and optimization software platforms, scheduled to be released in the second half of 2019. It will allow for easy future

network connectivity required to support fleet management and optimization of global multi-systems and multi-site enterprises. Omer Kulka, Kornit’s VP of Marketing and Product Strategy, comments, “This is a huge leap forward, not only for Kornit, but also for the direct-to-garment industry as a whole. We have delivered the Atlas on the collective feedback of thousands of Kornit systems’ operators and on the experience collected from hundreds of millions of printed garments – simply put, the Atlas is the best and most cost-efficient direct-to-garment printing technology for high-quantity and high-quality production requirements. On top of that, the Atlas has been designed in a modular and future-ready way, driving quick and easy implementation of new developments in the future. At Kornit, we remain focused on constantly introducing technology that allows the industry’s leading brands to better connect with their customers and to adapt to the rapid changes in consumer preferences, impacting the fashion and apparel industry and is driven by the talent in our global research and development division.” The new NeoPigment Eco-Rapid ink is a main driver of the Atlas’ retail quality prints. It provides leading white ink opacity, matched to those of conventional screen inks, and meets highest durability standards on multiple fabric types. Its increased colour gamut and saturation allow for deep full tones and precise spot colour matching.

The new ink has been developed with sustainability in mind, carries the Oeko-Tex Eco-Passport certification and is GOTS pre-approved. The new Eco-Rapid ink will be integrated with new Storm HD6 and Avalanche HD6/HDK systems and will also be retrofitted to existing Kornit HD systems. Kornit intends to switch all existing HD customers to NeoPigment Eco-Rapid during the year 2019. The launch of the Atlas completes an extensive period of beta testing, with extremely positive feedback from early adopters. Deborah H. Merrill, President of the Delta Group, parent company of DTG2Go, comments, “Many of the Kornit Atlas’ innovative capabilities, including the wrinkle detection and pallet ergonomics, present clear productivity benefits. The new Eco-Rapid ink provides impressive brilliance and colour gamut, meeting all wash test standards with no discernible scent. We are glad we had the opportunity to beta-test the Kornit Atlas and are certain it will become a key component within DTG2Go’s production line.” Jon Lunt, Co-Founder and Director at T Shirt & Sons, adds, “Using the Atlas, T Shirt and Sons achieved a significant boost in garment decoration production through the peak holiday season. In several weeks of rigorous testing in a high-volume production environment, the Kornit Atlas – with its new Eco-Rapid ink set – was a revelation, doubling our output with very high-quality prints and the reliability this high-pressure season demanded.” The system was demonstrated live at Kornit Digital’s booth at the ISS Long Beach show, taking place January 18-20, 2019 and in all of Kornit’s experience demo centers around the globe shortly after, as well as at Fespa Munich from May 14-17, 2019 and ITMA Barcelona, June 20-26, 2019. In addition, the company is planning Open House events to demonstrate the new systems in April in its regional subsidiaries.
