HEIDELBERG well on track after three quarters of FY2022/23

Sustained growth in third quarter leads sales to rise by around 10 percent to €1,729 million after 9 months.

HEIDELBERG predicts a further rise in the EBITDA margin to at least 8 percent for the 2022/23 financial year (2021/22: 7.3 percent). The net result after taxes is also expected to improve slightly compared with 2021/22 (€ 33 million).

Key Notes :

> Strength of incoming orders from North America, Europe, and growth segment of packaging printing (€1,859 million after 9 months).

> Further increase in EBITDA after 9 months to euro144 million (EBITDA margin: 8.3 percent).

> Forecast for 2022/23 financial year confirmed.

Thanks to strong demand from North America and Europe, along with sustained growth in the packaging segment, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (HEIDELBERG) is well on track after nine months of the current 2022/23 financial year. In the third quarter just ended, from October to December 2022, the Group bucked the general trend in the mechanical engineering industry by recording stable incoming orders of €630 million. This led to a high order backlog of almost €1 billion. At €609 million, sales in the third quarter were around 5 percent up on the equivalent quarter of the previous year. Adjusted for non-recurring effects, EBITDA was €18 million higher than in the previous year, primarily due to the positive impact of rising sales. Posting the full collectively agreed inflation relief bonus had a detrimental effect during this accounting period. The production-related increase in inventories led to a free cash flow of €–4 million in the third quarter, which represented a stable development compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Thanks to the good performance in terms of sales and incoming orders and the significant improvement in the operating result, the company is confirming its forecast for financial year 2022/23 as a whole. “We had a positive third quarter and were able to further increase our sales and operating result. Looking ahead, the coming months will continue to be affected by the expected increases in material, energy, and personnel costs,” said Dr. Ludwin Monz, CEO of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. “We will continue to counter this through price rises and maintain our cost discipline. We are therefore very confident of achieving our targets for the year,” he added.

Strong nine-month balance sheet –high level of demand despite economic uncertainties

Incoming orders after nine months remained stable and at a high level compared with the year before. Despite economic uncertainties, they totaled €1,859 million (previous year’s figure: €1,888 million). On the balance sheet date, the order backlog amounted to nearly €1 billion, which lays a good foundation for the coming financial year. Sales in all three quarters of the current financial year exceeded the respective figures for the year before. At €1,729 million, the nine-month total was 10 percent up on the previous year (€1,565 million).

The positive operating performance also continued in the third quarter but was negatively affected by the non-recurring effect of posting the full collectively agreed inflation relief bonus. Adjusted for nonrecurring effects in the current and previous financial years, EBITDA after nine months was around €56 million higher than the year before. In the third quarter, the operating result improved by €18 million compared with the previous year. The non-recurring effects from recognizing a collectively agreed inflation relief bonus on the liabilities side of the balance sheet (Q3: €–15 million), from selling a property in Switzerland (Q1: €+12 million), and from investing in the joint venture with Masterwork (Q3: €+7 million) largely canceled each other out. The non-recurring income included in the equivalent period of the previous year (EBITDA: €132 million) of around €48 million (Q2 of previous year: €+22 million from the sale of Docufy GmbH, Q3: €+26 million from the sale of property in Brentford in the UK) was thus more than compensated for by the improvement in the operating performance. After three quarters, EBITDA totaled €144 million (previous year: €132 million), which corresponds to an EBITDA margin of 8.3 percent. The net result after taxes after nine months also rose significantly and amounted to €54 million (equivalent period of previous year: €40 million).

Sustained growth in packaging segment

Packaging printing (Packaging Solutions segment) exhibited particularly strong growth in the third quarter. Incoming orders from October to the end of December 2022 were 18 percent up on the previous year’s figure. Over the nine-month period, order intake improved by 5 percent compared with the same period of the previous year. At €812 million, sales after nine months were over 22 percent higher than the year before. In commercial printing (Print Solutions segment), sales after nine months climbed

12 February 2023

to €898 million, while incoming orders fell slightly. As in the first half-year, changes to Germany’s incentive policy for electromobility meant wallbox business (Technology Solutions segment) was unable to continue the previous year’s exceptional growth in terms of incoming orders and sales.

Low net financial debt – equity ratio increases further

After nine months, the free cash flow amounted to €–16 million (previous year: €69 million). This lower figure is mainly due to the usual production-related increase in inventories and effects associated with the supply of parts. As expected, revenues from the sale of assets in the reporting period also

fell in relation to the previous year. Due to the negative free cash flow, the net financial debt at the end of the third quarter was €26 million and therefore remained at a low level (previous year: €6 million). HEIDELBERG is making progress with its equity ratio, which increased to around 21 percent. Alongside the higher actuarial interest rate for pensions in Germany at the end of December, this is above all due to the positive net result after taxes at the end of the quarter.

“A low net financial debt and a higher equity ratio put HEIDELBERG in a good financial position,” said the company’s new CFO, Tania von der Goltz. “In view of the uncertain situation at present, we will continue to work

on our resilience and, in particular, keep an eye on our costs,” she added.

Forecast for 2022/23 financial year confirmed

HEIDELBERG stands by its forecast for financial year 2022/23. The company continues to expect sales figures to increase to around €2.3 billion (2021/22: €2.18 billion). Despite the likelihood of cost increases, profitability is also set to improve further.

HEIDELBERG is still predicting a further rise in the EBITDA margin to at least 8 percent for the 2022/23 financial year (2021/22: 7.3 percent). The net result after taxes is also expected to improve slightly compared with 2021/22 (€ 33 million).

Agarwal Graphics upgrades with Kodak Trendsetter from Monotech

Monotech Systems installs Kodak Trendsetter at Ludhiana’s Agarwal Graphics.

Ludhiana’s leading printing service bureau Agarwal Graphics boasts a state-of-the-art pre-press facility equipped with a line of highend machines and equipments. The facility has been upgraded with the installation of a Kodak Trendsetter Platesetter, supplied, and installed by Monotech Systems, a leading machine manufacturer and one-stop solution provider for the printing and packaging industry globally.

Established in the year 1990, Agarwal Graphics has been a popular printing service bureau working for a handful of clients from all over Punjab and neighbouring areas. “We have been supplying plates to some of the leading printing companies and publishers in the region,” says Mr. Ashok Agarwal, Chairman & Managing Director, Agarwal Graphics.

Mr. Agarwal adds, “We maintain value & quality in production of thermal plates using best-in-class platesetters installed in our production facility. With a target of producing more than 500 plates during our daily working hours, we always strive for a heavyduty digital plate-setter. With the installation of a new Kodak Trendsetter Platesetter we are now empowered to meet our target.”

Earlier, Agarwal Graphics used to produce UV plates using basysPrint UV-Setter. In this respect, Mr. Agarwal mentions that they were in need for just another advanced and

upgraded platesetter for faster production, so they opted for the Kodak Trendsetter.

“We have had the right decision on choosing the Kodak Trendsetter Platesetter X-speed with Kodak softwares from Monotech Systems. Ever since the installation of the highly-advanced thermal platestter in our facility we never looked back and forth for more. This platesetter finally meets all our requirements to fulfil the sheer demands from our customers—faster and friendlier.

Kodak Trendsetter 800Platesetter is an ideal system capable to produce thermal plates up to 33x45 inches. It drives maximum productivity at reduced cost of production for Agarwal Graphics. Many automation features and integrated punch system of the machine trigger faster and flexible plate production.

Mr. Agarwal informs that they are now capable to achieve more accurate and stable imaging using the new Kodak Trendsetter Platesetter.

On the company’s expanded activities, Mr. Agarwal mentions that they have introduced a new division called Agarwal Processor. “My son Shivam will look after the new division. As of now, he’s pursuing BTech IT, so he’s not able to devote fulltime to the business,” he informs. He further mentions that they look forward to strengthening their tie with Monotech Systems, which is a driving force for them to expand business. In addition to thermal plates, Agarwal Graphics supplies inks, chemicals, and other products from brands like Micro Inks around Punjab and J&K.

“Connect Automation” by Komori at PRINT CHINA 2023

Creating production innovation through digital transformation at the printing site is the Connected Automation way of thinking by Komori.

5th International Printing Technology Exhibition of China will take place from April 11 to 15 at the Guangdong Modern International Exhibition Center. Komori will be present with its extensive line-up of latest solutions for the industry.

- KP-Connect Corner, Sheetfed Offset Press Corner, Digital Corner, Komori Nantong Corner, Komori-Kare Corner, SDGs Corner, Currency Printing, Web Offset KomoriChambon, MBO, SERIA Corner.

Key Notes :

> With KP-Connect at the core, Komori enables improving the performance of each piece of equipment.

> Maximizing productivity by optimizing the entire process through connecting the MIS with prepress, press, and postpress equipment.

> At Print China 2023, Komori will set up a Smart Factory in the booth and demonstrate both commercial and package printing.

Today, automation, labour saving, and robotics have made it possible to improve the productivity of various processes of printing. We see, each process is fragmented and individual production processes are managed by analog means. Digitalization connects the production processes and not only improves production efficiency but also visualizes costs and increases profitability. Komori’s “Connected Automation” way of thinking is creating production innovation through digital transformation at the printing site.

With KP-Connect at the core, Komori has proposed improving the performance of each piece of equipment and maximizing productivity by optimizing the entire process through connecting the MIS (management information system) with prepress, press, and postpress equipment.

At Print China 2023, Komori will set up a Smart Factory in the booth and demonstrate both commercial and package printing. Visitors will get the opportunity to see integrated production with all processes seamlessly connected and overall process productivity maximized. In addition, solutions that meet the needs of the Chinese market will be displayed in an easy to understand manner.

Package Solutions

For the first time in China, Komori will highlight high

productivity by exhibiting the Lithrone G44 advance, a unique 44-inch printing press (33” x 44” sheet size). Operability and production speed are very similar to that of the more common 40-inch sized machine, but because the sheet size is approximately 20% larger, more impositions are possible. This unique press is attracting attention as a strategic machine for improving productivity in the package printing market. During the printing demonstration, Komori will introduce its Smart Color printing technology that reproduces a wide colour gamut and includes many special colours, by using only the separations of the six colours of CMYK + orange and green. Since many special colours can be created on the press using separations, many ink colour unit changes can be eliminated, significantly reducing makeready time, reducing material waste, improving efficiency, improving overall productivity and helping to address environmental issues. In addition, many high-valueadded print samples will be on display, showing the additional benefit of the double coater configuration.

Commercial Solutions

Possessing an overwhelming superiority in doublesided, one-pass printing and now being delivered worldwide, the Lithrone GX40RP advance will this time perform a printing demonstration using oilbased ink. Expect high-speed production printing of booklets and quick job changeovers. By linkage from printing to folding, high-speed folding by the

MBO series and unmanned palletizing by the MBO CoBo-Stack will be shown. Visitors will experience the future image of the automated printing factory through demonstrations.

Flexible press for light and heavy stock

Komori Nantong (KNT), Komori’s manufacturing facility in China, will exhibit and hold demonstrations of the Lithrone A37. In response to customer requests to print on heavy stock, Komori has evolved the A37 into a machine that can print on both thin and thick paper. In the demonstration, the press will be connected to KP-Connect to perform cardboard printing for package printing. Print China visitors can experience the capabilities of the Lithrone A37, which can handle a wide range of jobs from thin paper to thick paper with high quality.

Exhibition corner

The Sheetfed Offset Exhibition Corner features a special machine configuration specialized for high-end packaging with value-added printing. The Digital Printing Exhibition Corner features a sample display of the Impremia NS40, the pinnacle digital printing system made possible only by Komori, which can be called “digital offset” printing, along with the business model of the first overseas machine for the Artron Art Group with videos. Komori will also exhibit the business model of the Impremia IS29s, B2-size digital printing system. At the KP-Connect Corner, the core of Connected

Automation, the company will introduce the role of KP-Connect in promoting digital transformation in the printing site with a short seminar. In addition, it will introduce various businesses of the Komori Group, such as SDG initiatives, Komori-Kare, the Currency printing business, MBO postpress, the printed electronics (PE) business, and also show many print samples.

Komori will celebrate its 100th anniversary in October this year. At Print China 2023, to commemorate its 100th anniversary, it has prepared a project to convey its gratitude to everyone who has supported the company thus far as well as those who will partner with Komori in the future.

The Komori booth at Print China 2023 will be a space full of highlights that embody digital transformation by organically connecting equipment and processes.

Exhibit Content

KP-Connect Pro

KP-Connect software allows for comprehensive scheduling, progress and results management for all printing processes in the printing factory. KP-Connect can connect not only printing machines but also MIS (core systems), RIP and postpress machines from various manufacturers, improving operations and increasing productivity by automating overall workflow and sharing information in real time. KP-

Connect is designed with an open platform concept, and by releasing the API in the future, it will be possible to connect devices in a wider range of fields. At the venue, we will connect the offset presses and postpress processing equipment, build a Smart Factory in the Komori booth in which all processes are digitalized, and introduce various process management functions that support digital transformation in the printing factory.

KP-Connect Corner

In the KP-Connect Corner, which embodies the exhibition concept of Connected Automation, visitors can actually confirm the performance of KP-Connect and experience the functions that support DX in printing plants. Komori will propose the best methods from a broad variety of customer cases, such as successful DX by digitalizing process management. Visitors may have their queries about DX in printing answered and consult Komori experts on this. Furthermore, in this corner Komori will hold a seminar to explain each KP-Connect function and method of use in an easy-to-understand manner.

LITHRONE G44 advance - 44” Offset Printing Press

The Lithrone G44 advance offers a unique maximum sheet size of 840 x 1,150 mm (33” x 44”), perfect for high production of strategic sizes in the packaging market. The Lithrone G44 advance offers similar operability to that of a traditional 40-inch press as well as the ability to create more efficient impositions

pressideas/ commercial printing 15 February 2023

from the larger sheet size, dramatically improving productivity. Compared to a large format machine, it is easier to handle the sheets and the running cost is reduced. The powerful paper feed and delivery of the Lithrone G44 advance provide sustained, stable, high-speed production on thin paper, such as for large B-size publications, as well as board stock production for multiimposition package printing, making it a powerful and highly versatile printing machine.

Smart Color technology

Smart Color technology from Komori is a revolutionary solution capable of covering a wide color gamut without special colour ink. This technology uses six colours of ink (CMYK + orange and green) to reproduce the larger colour gamut by multiplying halftone dots. Komori’s high quality presses excel with this process which is dependent on a high level of dot reproduction accuracy. In package printing, where multi-imposition work is frequent, the unique Komorimatic dampening system prevents emulsification, a major cause of colour variation, by controlling a thin film of water on the plate accurately in both the vertical and horizontal directions. Smart Color will be an innovation that revolutionizes productivity for package printing by eliminating colour changes at makeready.

The Lithrone GX40RP advance:

Unmatched productivity for double-sided, one-pass printing

The Lithrone GX40RP advance provides an unmatched productivity and cost saving solution for dedicated two-sided printing. The RP press achieves two-sided printing without flipping the sheet like traditional convertible perfectors, achieving paper savings and productivity increases. Since two-sided printing is achieved on the RP press using the same sheet sizes as straight presses and can be provided with Komori’s worldclass automation features, it delivers better collaboration and optimization between processes for world class ROI.

A demonstration of high-speed printing on thin paper by Lithrone GX40RP advance using oil-based ink will be presented this time. In addition to the print samples from the press in the booth, trading card print samples will be displayed at the venue.

A-APC (Asynchronous Automatic Plate Changing System)

Each unit is equipped with a plate changingdedicated motor, allowing plates to be changed simultaneously for all colours. With the A-APC, plate changing can be completed in 1 minute 25 seconds regardless of how many plates are changed. This labour-saving design greatly reduces makeready time, becoming more effective as the number of plates increases.

LITHRONE A37 - 37” Offset Printing Press

The Lithrone A37 is a high-performance press that inherits the basic performance of the Lithrone Series machines. Being more compact and lighter than a 40-inch press, means lower initial cost and lower life-cycle cost due to reduced power and materials costs. A compact press that can produce A1size products, the Lithrone A37 offers a 640 x 940 mm (25” x 37”) maximum sheet size that

can accommodate a wide range of printing needs. Since colour management can be implemented by including a CMS colour bar on sheets even with 8-up A4 impositions, this machine is ideal for producing high page count products with high print quality. Capable of printing sheets up to 37 inches in width, this press has the power to address the full span of requirements in the publishing and commercial printing segments. Perfect for printing items in the international standard A1 poster size, plus total flexibility in layout criteria such as bindery register marks. The 13,000 sheets per hour maximum printing speed is just right for regular operation.

Moreover, this press offers a sheet thickness range of 0.04–0.6 mm and all the performance demanded for success with short- and medium-run work. A thick paper specification has been added as a new option for this press to meet the frequently changing printing needs of the Chinese market. This broadens the range of work that printing companies can handle while holding down costs.

The press inherits Komori’s Tsukuba quality featuring standard made in Komori Nantong Factory. The demonstration will feature a wide range of specifications for both thin and thick paper.

Introduction to Printing

Printing is supposed to be the most innovative invention of mankind amongst all inventions which has helped in transforming humans to build the modern society we are living in today. In fact printing can be also termed as the mother of all inventions and technologies because printing helped to secure knowledge by printing all documents and spreading them to masses and also secured the technology and knowledge for the future. Printing has been used to transfer not only itself but it has also helped in transferring knowledge to the people through centuries and thereby helped in developing all modern technologies that we are using today. The development of modern society is solely the product of transferring knowledge and creating systems like printed currency which helped in creating systems/policies to actually run the world. Printing is not just

technology but it’s also an art. The combined effect of technology and art can be seen through the influence printing puts on our daily lives and today we cannot live our day without printing.

Definition of Printing

Any script or creative that is transferred and replicated onto any flexible or rigid surface for mass production can be termed as ‘PRINTING’.

Preface to Printing Machinery

It refers to all those machines and equipments, which are used in the field of printing industry. It ranges from small printers to big offset printing machines. Today, the printing machinery is available in various technologies andsizes to suit different needs. Bigger sizes of printing machinery are also available for heavy-duty printing useful for

Safety Hazards in Printing Machinery

During the operation and maintenance of the machines, worker/operator may be exposed to the following electrical and mechanical hazards, if suitable safety guards or safety devices are not provided:

• Being drawn into in-running nips of rollers;

• Contact with dangerous moving parts;

• Uncovered electric connections;

• Entanglement with rotating parts; and

• Safety alarms and safety/emergency switches.

Need of Safety Codes/Standards

Movement of machine parts, electric energy, sharp edges, heat, noise, chemicals, etc, may create hazards for worker/operator, while operating the printing machine. All these above hazards cannot be avoided by design measures because of the functional requirement of the machine/mechanism and hence safety measures are required to protect the operator from these hazards.

The role of safety codes/standards become important for providing procedures/ guidelines to the manufacturer while designing their machines and to operator also while operating the machine.

Standards on Safety Aspects of Printing Machinery

Standardization in the field of printing machinery has been a long drawn programme beginning right from late fifties

pressideas/ commercial printing 18 February 2023

till present day. Bureau of Indian Standards through its Printing Machinery Sectional Committee, MED 25 has formulated 17 standards on printing machinery and components covering terminology, dimensions, and performance, maintenance and safety requirements.

Some of the major standards formulated by MED 25 on safety requirements in printing machinery are as follows:

Print Summit 2023 drives home ‘Own The Change’ theme

The 15th edition of BMPA’s PS23 successfully takes place with an active participation of over 900 delegates at NCPA Mumbai.

The 15th edition of Bombay Master Printers Association (BMPA)’s flagship event Print Summit was held successfully on 16th of February at NCPA (Tata Theatre) in Mumbai. Over 900 print enthusiasts attended the event and one could literally feel the energy inside the hall.

The organising team, as always was beaming with excitement and so were the delegates. PRESSIdeas has always noticed the positive sentiment and optimism in the approach of the BMPA team in all that they do. The cooperation amongst the members and their respect for their elders/seniors in the organisation is clearly noticeable and the honour bestowed by them on Fred Poonawala who has been a protagonist in all the previous Print Summits was a testimony in itself. So was the gesture asking all the past presidents in the audience to stand up for an applause from the audience considering the time was short and the show had a jampacked itinerary. As it does happen in all organisations, it is good to change the baton over to the next generation well in time.

Coming back to PS23, the present president Mr.Amit Shah introduced the summit to the over 900 delegates, which almost filled in the huge Tata Theatre at Nariman Point, Mumbai. With the PS23 theme of ‘Own The Change’ it was evident from all the speakers that change is the only constant and one who adapts to the change would be the one who would succeed in the long run.

The day had a full day activity with presentations from Kedar Lele of HUL (Key note speaker), Sudhanshu Mani, ex- GM of ICF was a treat to watch (and hear) with his speech interspersed with apt urdu couplets. Both of them got an immense standing ovation from the entire audience.

It is a fact that at such conferences the audience is hardly interested in hearing technical presentations but then organisers need fund to run such shows and main sponsors are given time to showcase their ware - both ITC (Shailendra Singh, GM Production talking on Manufacturing

Excellence: The ITC Way) and Koenig & Bauer (Sasha Fischer, Head KBA PM & Key Account Manager, Europe talking on Exceeding Print) had their presentation slots. As for the others we did hear a murmur that this time instead of stalls/stands for sponsors with provision for standees etc., there were just a couple of Digital screens with videos of about 18 seconds running on them for the visiting delegates to have a chance to see them. Undoubtedly, digital is the future.

Other speakers at the show included Ranesh Bajaj of Vinsak, who had an interactive session with Ankul Nanavaty of Unik Printers. “We don’t have to be China+1 as we already are stronger and smarter to stand alone and become India+1. Well, infrastructure in India is improving at a fast pace, and the ease

of doing business has shown a big change by jumping from 170 in the year 2016 to 70 today” announced Ranesh and Ankul could not agree more. Bajaj also urged the audience to consider expanding to other countries rather than just staying within the country as he himself has done with his expansion to Middle East and Africa.

Dr Pujya Gnanavatsai Swami, was a pleasant surprise with his view for all the business people in the audience. His speech interspersed with cricketing anecdotes and clips from the Indian cricket stalwarts was a welcome change for the audience immediately after the lunch. He urged the audience to be conscious towards the need of all around us to have a life of glory. Well he proved that spirituality coupled with business

pressideas/ commercial printing 20 February 2023

sense can go well and do good in today’s business world too.

R Muthusubramaniam of Packfora had an interesting perspective on the changes that can be expected in future and what could be done to sail in a stable boat whilst being in the troubled seas. Meanwhile, Iqbal Kherodawal of Print Point in conversation with Jinesh Mehta of Unitrade FZE, presented the ‘lead The Change’ series about the tales and travails of Jinesh moving out from his comfort zone of family business to the successful managing of his own brands in the UAE while outsourcing from China and now getting back successfully into the production scene in the middle east.

Indraneel Chitale of Chitale Bandhu gave an inspiring account of their growth, a journey of over 81 years. Raveendra Joshi, the President of AIFMP while felicitating Indraneel, termed him as the ‘hightech mithaiwala’. Arunachalam Muruganantham, the Padman of India gave an inspiring speech too.

During PS23, it was announced that BMPA is working towards the creation of a print museum which is expected to evolve as a landmark in the cultural map of the city. While mentioning about it during the event, Mehul Desai from the organising team said that the Mumbai Print Museum is expected to showcase the rich printing tradition and the technological evolution of print with a

special focus on print in Mumbai city and its environs.

What we made out of the very successful event is very simple explained in the quote below and was put out in the presentation by the Keynote Speaker too: “Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you’d better be running”.

Driving profitability in labels!

Driving profitability in labels, with embellishments, digital printing & hybrid printing.

Based on the views of the printing fraternity it is largely agreed that embellishments, security features and innovative concepts on labels that enhance the shelf appeal and lead to better sales volumes for brands, can help get better prices.

Key Notes :

> The entry of organized retail outlets replacing Kirana stores triggered the increase in demand for labels and packaging.

> With the margins in the labels industry under intense pressure, label converters are looking at options to drive in profitability.

> Label printers across India share their views on how to drive-in better margins in the label production.

Self-adhesive or pressure sensitive labels industry in India has grown steadily right from the time of its initial entry into India to be indigenously produced in the mid-1960s when a screen printer manually created the first label. Thereafter, label manufacturing has evolved and completely transformed technically over the years. Initially, small and slow very narrow web letter presses, 4 or 5inch wide, from the eastern part of the world were used to print with blocks and die-cut labels with flatbed dies in roll form. These presses eventually started going wider in printing width with growth in demand. The need for increased production in 1980s brought in the adoption of rotary flexographic printing presses. However, since the flexo plate technology was just evolving, usage of letterpress block printing was still growing. It was in the new millennium that developments brought in prepress and plate making technologies, made it possible for printers to decrease their dependence on letterpress printing technology and invest in flexo presses that eventually became modular and print widths going wider with increased speeds.

Toward the middle of the first decade of the new millennium, the pop and Mom retail stores, known as Kirana stores catering to consumers, started being replaced by the entry of organized retail

outlets and with it, came the increase in demand for labels and packaging. When it was realized the customer’s point of purchase decision to lift the product off the shelf is the driver for sales, brands felt the imperative need for attractive labels and packaging. Different print technologies started being employed and presses with advanced capabilities started being developed and offered. While all this

28 February 2023

transformation was happening, the label industry in India was all along registering a robust double-digit growth. It was largely accepted fact that even though labels are a very small part of the large packaging industry, it was more profitable. Due to this, the number of label printers kept growing, investments also came in from established offset printing companies. With cheaper label presses coming from China and availability of good affordable machines in India, the label printing capacities have grown exponentially. This increase in capacities, the pandemic, the strikes in Finnish paper mills, the Ukraine war, the re-emergence of Covid in China, etc. brought the margins in the labels industry under intense pressure. Raw material prices have since escalated, freight rates, salaries and overheads have increase while competition does not leave room for increase in selling prices. In such a difficult scenario, label converters are looking at options to drive in profitability.

Opinion and comments of label printers across India was sought on how to drive-in better margins in the label production in the given circumstances. Three questions were posed to all, their response is somewhat similar, yet some do have apprehensions about the steps that are suggested whether they will actually drive in margins? However still, a direction on the way forward appears to be an imperative. The printers in the diverse geographical zones who contributed their views are as follows;

North:

• Anuj Bhargava, Kumar Labels NOIDA hereinafter referred to as (AB)

• Rajeev Chhatwal, Kwality Offset New Delhi (RC)

West:

• Mahendra Shah, Renault Paper, Palghar (MS)

• Himanshu Kapur, J K Fine Prints Mumbai (HK)

• Priyank Vasa, Unick fix-a-form, Ahmedabad (PV)

East:

• Manoj Kochhar, Holoflex Kolkata (MK)

South:

• Raveendran Selvarajan, Seljegat Sivakasi (RS)

• Lakshminarayanan Parthasarthy,

Signode India Ltd. (Wintek) Bangalore (LP)

Question: Do you agree that Embellishments, Digital printing & Hybrid printing or converting are important steps to get better prices for labels?

AB: Yes, value added labels do add to margins. However still, the main buyers are few. Startups or premium products cannot add volumes where multiple players offer value additions.

RC: Embellishments certainly will get you a better price if you have a technical edge over your competition. Just a different printing process does not get you more price from customers. One needs to decide which process to use to get better return based on machine capabilities .

Hybrid is still not suited for the Indian Market. However good converting and finishing is important for short runs on digital to reduce wastage.

MS: Yes, I agree. With increase of just-intime orders, shorter runs and demand for innovations, it is economical and faster to produce with Digital printing. Embellishments complemented with other capabilities, aid improvement in value addition.

HK: More technical the labels are, better is the margin. Unfortunately, large companies expect more for less. The basics of costing has been lost by most label converters. Embellishments also add to costs, but to recover those costs is difficult.

PV: We aim for the best process fit for a job, be it digital, flexo, hybrid or offset. That is the only way to master production cost. Digital embellishment always gives an edge and keeps business secure but does not always guarantee increased profitability, it comes with its own limitations.

MK: I agree that Embellishments, Digital printing & Hybrid printing or converting are important steps to get better prices for labels. Value addition invariably leads to a better realization. Brand protection elements such as hologram, security inks, security designing also add value.

RS: Not only embellishments, but also innovations along with having capabilities

for attending to needs of customers are important. If food and pharma customer needs labels with water-based inks, we need to have those capabilities. If they need booklet labels it becomes an imperative to be able to create them. Every printing process has its own specialty so when you are able to create labels with Hybrid and digital technologies, then of course selling prices are better.

LP: QR codes and AR (Augmented Reality) in labels, connecting consumer to the brand – is what we see as way forward for profitability . Embellishment leads to aesthetics, shelf appeal, increased sale and brand value for better profits to the buyers and converters.

Question: Have you taken any steps in this direction to increase your capabilities?

AB: We are always focused to value added labels. We have capabilities do embellishments like 3-D effects, embossing, textured foiling, screen printing and many other such processes that enhance the aesthetics of product.

RC: We have already invested in converting equipment with finishing and embellishing capabilities like foiling, Screen printing, Lamination etc. Our range of labels includesFoil stamped/embossed labels, labels with tactile effects, Laminated, 3-D embossed, Variable data and Holographic labels etc.

MS: Since long, our customer profile is such that embellishments and employment of multiple print technologies is an imperative, for this reason we invested in hybrid presses many years back. Currently to achieve just in time capabilities we are investing in digital printing which will also give us additional production time on our main printing presses.

HK: We have always invested to be a capable company, right from inception so have the capacity to do all types of embellishments.

PV: Yes, we have added digital capabilities. Having multiple printing technologies at our disposal, enables us to pick and choose processes that are best suited for a particular job depending on the complexity of decoration required.

MK: We are constantly trying to scale up our

pressideas/ plc 29 February 2023

capabilities of adding diverse authentication features and other embellishments such as foiling, registered hologram stamping, variable data printing and finding new materials that are unique.

RS: At Seljegat we always endeavour to stay invested and capable with the latest developments. We have already installed machines with multiple capabilities, and we prefer all inline. We can do embellishments, special varnishes, multilayer labels, digital for variable or personalized labels, embossing, etc. We are always ready to cater to the changing needs of customers, nowadays pharma and food companies are demanding labels to be done with water-based inks or low migration inks, we have immediately empowered ourself suitably to serve them. In today’s time if we cannot deliver that extra, then we get lost in the crowd of intense competition.

LP: We are already having all capabilities and exploring AR in labels as next step towards Brand connect and Brand promotion.

Question: What in your opinion are factors that can drive in better margins? Please mention steps at given prices of inputs.

AB: Label companies should invest in making labelstocks for captive use, negotiate hard while buying machines and for buying raw materials.

RC: As competition gets aggressive, systems need to be designed to reduce wastages, increase productivity and buy raw material at competitive prices. Making our internal systems strong is the only way out to drive-in better margins.

MS: We started the process of optimizing production costs, long time back. We collected data of all ongoing jobs for past 3 years and calibrated all processes as per the following;

a) We dwell on actual time needed for the job and check if the processes are complying with targeted numbers.

b) If not complying what’s the core reason and if for some reasons not meeting norms, can solutions be found?

c) Evaluating, if no solution is possible, is the job generating profit for the company?

d) If not , either get the price increase or

discard such jobs to save time for more sustainable jobs.

HK: Rather than controlling the input prices on which we have no control, we should focus on getting better prices from clients. We need to factor-in the basics like label waste that is completely non-recyclable and cannot be salvaged. Label machines are capital intensive we must add the impact of cost of investment in the total price of end product.

PV: To improve profitability;

Freight cost management is an imperative, it can save lot of money.

Process improvements and wastage control is necessary. One should start with small steps like exact web sizes, proper sheet layout, special sizes for volume jobs, ink management and keeping a track of low moving stocks.

Refrain from unhealthy competition.

Learn from your mistakes as a team. Take all complaints seriously. Try implementing simple solutions.

Update monthly performance chart of individual operators, give them incentives for faster turnaround and increased capacity utilization. Take corrective steps to reduce downtime due breakdowns.

MK: Key to improve margins is to provide customised solutions by understanding what the customer needs. We try to incorporate various levels of authentication, embellishments and decoration to tailor solutions that best meet their needs. If a customer cannot afford to pay for the hologram, we focus on enhancing the printed authentication features keeping costs under control, and yet get a price that enhances our profitability while the customer appreciates the value we deliver.

RS: For driving in better margins, the instant reaction is to buy cheaper but if we have to think of steps at given raw material prices then one has to research internally and implement changes. As a first step we have opted for equipment and steps for faster changeover time between jobs to increase productivity. We have invested in a system

for make ready to be completed before one job ends. The changeover time for us has reduced from one and half hour to just thirty minutes. For job set up we were using fresh labelstock but now we use rejected, old and leftover unusable stocks. Next, we are now switching over to LED UV as its operational and lamp replacement cost is lower. New equipment has been ordered and will be installed soon. We plan to install an automatic butt slicer for non-stop production. Reducing wastages is also on our radar and we constantly work on it.

LP: The following steps are necessary to drive in profits;

Watertight operations, control on wastages and minimising set-up waste.

Reducing overhead costs, improving efficiency and OEE (Overall equipment effectiveness).

Propose embellishments to customer making the label more premium to claim better realisation.

Summation:

Price increase is an ongoing process, the impact of inflation is felt every year along with that of other unavoidable circumstances. So, manufacturers need to gradually increase selling prices to maintain a healthy bottom line. Unfortunately, that is an ideal scenario but in actual the selling prices are driven by market dynamics and competition. In the present situation, for the label industry, it is time to look internally and evaluate. Based on the views of the printing fraternity it is largely agreed that embellishments, security features and innovative concepts on labels that enhance the shelf appeal and lead to better sales volumes for brands, can help get better prices. The simpler the label is, more is the competition. As indigenously produced label presses have come within the reach of middle level printers, the competition in that segment has become intense. Moreover, with organized retail and ecommerce becoming the predominant selling systems, need for more decorative labels, IT enabled labels and personalized variably printed labels with security features has escalated. Not long-ago setup of label jobs took an hour or more with 2 or 3 persons on each press and at least 100 meters of material being used before final saleable production commenced. With

pressideas/ plc 30 February 2023

increased automation, advanced automatic registration controls, higher speeds, etc. now a single operator can setup a job in just a few meters in about 15-30 minutes, with increased productivity, less wastages and quick changeovers between jobs by keeping the next jobs ready. Using exact size materials and not generating offcuts is also a necessity. These are changes that add to margins and reduced operational expenses.

Food and pharma safety and health concerns are matters of importance for discerning customers, this, along with statutory rules for toxic or unsafe materials used in converting labels, are to be avoided. There

is an increased demand for non-migration and water-based inks because UV inks are considered somewhat hazardous for direct food contact and skin contact applications. Printers need to have such capabilities to supply as demanded by print buyers. Most companies feel that to reduce costs there is need for internal production systems and the workflow to be strengthened or monitored continuously to reduce downtimes at each stage, opt for more automation to reduce manpower and use energy efficient machines, equipment or systems.

Finally, time has come when EPR (Extended producer responsibility) compliance has

become mandatory. Sustainability and circular economy are becoming a social responsibility for earth to be a safer planet. Large FMCG companies and brands have already started opting for or expressing preference to buy from certified green companies. It will not be out of place that producing in compliance, may as well add to cost but it may also qualify for better pricing for this good social cause.

Digital printing becomes cool for the next generation

A perspective to give the job description »printer« new attractiveness.

Since the spring of 2022, just as the industry was beginning to recover from the economic and social effects of the pandemic, HR managers in numerous industries have been asking themselves: Where are our employees, where are our young people? This situation revealed a labour shortage that began well before the pandemic. The reasons for this are obvious. But what to do to change this?

Mechanical engineering companies like Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG are breaking new ground. Their developments support the converter’s efforts to counter the shortage of skilled workers through automation.

Key Notes :

> In an overall competitive labour market, it is currently not very attractive.

> In Packaging Industry presses are increasingly controlled via an HMI making it interesting for female and male trainees alike.

> What makes the Gallus One technology a particularly attractive workplace for young professionals?

You don’t have to look far to understand the reasons for the younger generation’s disinterest in the printing industry. The fact that it is not very attractive to young people when choosing a career is mainly due to a perceived image. Numerous company closures in the commercial sector as well as the environmental problems of packaging have shaped the image of the industry. In an overall competitive labour market, it is currently not very attractive.

Yet label and packaging printing has a lot to offer. According to one study*, bottlenecks in skilled workers are mainly to be found in gender-typical professions, i.e., professions that are mainly practiced either by women or by men. Such hindrances are not as likely to exist in occupations that are equally attractive to women and men. For the printing industry, this means emphasizing the attractive employment prospects in label and packaging printing for women and men alike, as well as their crisis-proof and future-proof jobs.

After all, packaging printing is an industry in which fundamental parameters are currently being rethought. A market where the shift towards more environmentally friendly, sustainable materials and print designs is in full swing. An industry that is dominated by media technology and where presses are increasingly controlled via an HMI (Human Machine Interface) like a smartphone. These developments help make it interesting for female and male trainees alike.

Mechanical engineering drives automation forward

What the industry has learned is that there is a growing shortage of operators for machines where there is little or no automation. The pandemic has also shown that if skilled workers are absent, printing presses can no longer be operated. This is one of the reasons that mechanical engineering companies like Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG are breaking new ground. Their developments support the converter’s efforts to counter the shortage of skilled workers through automation.

The Swiss mechanical engineering company, whose name stands for conventional and hybrid narrow web technology in the market, recently surprised the industry with the presentation of the Gallus One. With this model, the company is bringing an independent digital printing machine into the market and is

34 February 2023

thus pursuing the clear goal of preparing the digital transformation in narrow web printing for upcoming requirements. Pure digital printing is a practical option to renew the machine park, since high-end hybrid machines are out of the question for many converters due to their capital requirements.

Digital printing is changing the job description »printer«

What is exceptional about the Gallus One machine concept is the extensive standardization which has been incorporated into the digital machine. It’s defined process parameters are designed for consistent automation, which enables the operator to confidently complete the demanding tasks in day-to-day business.

The high level of automation of the Gallus One changes the field of activity at the press. Self-monitoring of basic functions on the digital press frees the operator from timeconsuming routine tasks. No more manual make-ready as in conventional printing, no more manual mixing of inks, no more colour changes, no more adjusting of inks and many other manual activities. These are eliminated in digital printing.

Here, the operator carries out the order change with predominantly IT-related activities. They take the print data from the pre-press stage with integrated colour management and load it into the frontend that controls the digital printing machine. They then selects the appropriate substrate profile for printing. This processed data is then printed with high production reliability and productivity. The orders are completed with a data backup. Apart from material handling, process steps that are carried out via the control console characterize and automate the job description of the machine operator in digital printing.

Gallus One with additional ease of use

What makes the Gallus One technology a particularly attractive workplace for young professionals? Thanks to its extensive level of automation, the machine offers a level of operating convenience that is well above the standard. An operator controlling the machine via the human-machine interface (HMI) receives all important information from it directly on the display.

During operation a proprietary image processing system (Vision System) takes over several functions serving as the heart of the central machine, and is the basis for the high level of automation. One of these time-saving functions is the user-friendly adjustment of register settings at the push of a button. This ensures that the individual colours are precisely superimposed. The Vision System with its high-resolution camera outperforms comparable solutions by automating essential quality assurance measures detecting not only missing nozzles, but also density variations (Density Uneveness) in solids. Compensating for these two sources of error prevents both white lines in the print image and the formation of rainbow effects that would cause colour drift in solids.

The Gallus One has other user-friendly functions that make working on the machine a pleasure. With the Gallus One, the print heads are not moved - not even for cleaning. This innovative concept minimizes service calls and increases machine availability. The newly designed cleaning system moves the entire substrate table down in the printing area, giving access to the print heads as a whole - including web tension control. When cleaning is triggered by the operator, the cleaning unit is then brought to the print heads and cleans them. In addition to this standard cleaning through the use of the innovative features of the cleaning system, ultrasonic cleaning can be activated to support the cleaning process as needed. This makes the entire process extremely simple for the operator, with the aim of replacing manual cleaning as completely as possible.

The glass covers of the pinning modules, which fix the ink droplets directly after they hit the substrate using UV light, are just as easy to clean. Their cleaning takes place outside the press, without any contortions during the cleaning process. Both of these solutions make working on and with the press easier.

Refilling ink is also very user-friendly. For improved ink handling, the ink containers are easily accessible from the operator side. This design allows the containers to be changed without the operator coming into contact with ink, while the machine continues to run, so there is no need to schedule downtime or need to correct the web.

Additionally, the operator does not have to worry about splices in the parent roll. The Gallus One has an automatic detection system that works via sensors detecting splices in a roll and allows them to pass all print bars without any loss of register or speed. This function protects the print heads from damage without affecting production.

Of course, to operate the machine, the operator must be able to master the workflow. With the Gallus One, setup assistants (wizards) guide the operator step-by-step through the upcoming tasks and support, working through the necessary steps systematically, making the steps easier to learn. Using a client-server architecture, tasks such as step & repeat can be taken over by either the operator or the prepress department. The latter relieves the operator and allowing them to concentrate more on downstream processes.

Automation also makes maintenance easier. In ongoing predictive service monitoring, sensors record the condition of the machine and transmit the data online to a cloud service set up by the parent company, Heidelberg. This is done in strict compliance with the European General Data Protection Regulation, which protects both personal and job-related data. The machine condition data is analysed, and if any irregularities become apparent the customer’s maintenance department is informed. In this way foreseeable faults can be rectified before they occur. This approach has proven its worth in the sheetfed sector over many years.

Cultural upheaval

These examples show how automation affects press technology and operations in label and packaging printing. Making full use of the automation possibilities involves embedding the presses in a workflow that links them to the factory management system. Despite extensive automation overall, the industry continues to rely on the technical expertise of its employees. Therefore qualified employees will continue to be indispensable in the future. To attract them, jobs need to be designed in an interesting way. Digital printing with the Gallus One is one example of technology being applied to accomplish this.

Canon India launches its most cost effective and multi-purpose Desktop A1 Plus Large Format Printer

imagePROGRAF TC-20 – Canon’s first desktop 4-colour pigment ink large format printer with A1 plus capability.

Driven by its pursuit in innovation, Canon India expanded its printing portfolio with the launch of imagePROGRAF TC-20, its first desktop 4-colour pigment ink large format printer with A1 plus capability. Keeping in mind the versatile needs of architects today, the sleek and compact TC-20 supports operations from small workspaces or home bound offices, while delivering vibrant, colorful, and quality output for big designs and blueprints.

The TC-20 also supports roll paper of up to A1 plus width and comes with a standard built-in Auto Sheet Feeder (ASF) that enables continuous A3/A4 printing for maximum productivity. Compatible with free software and applications such as the PosterArtist, the TC-20 offers superb ease of use as with other high-end large format printers in the imagePROGRAF series.

Speaking on the launch, Mr. Manabu Yamazaki, President and CEO, Canon India said, ‘’With customer needs at the core, we have been expanding our portfolio, launching specialized products in line with market trends. The hybrid working format is witnessing increased adoption across sectors, propelling growth for space efficient superior technology equipment. The new offering imagePROGRAF TC-20 is designed keeping in mind the new-age working landscape addressing varied needs of large format printing. Categorically targeting the architect community and photo studio industry, TC-20 provides users with extreme convenience operating from different locations, be it home, construction site or compact office spaces. We are confident that the latest launch will emerge as a preferred choice enabling desired quality and productivity.”

Large Format Printer with Small Footprint

Featuring a space-saving design, the new TC-20 meets large format printing needs of home offices, remote worksites, and corporate offices with its compactness. The large format printer sits easily on desks or

shelves and allows users to conveniently perform print-related operations such as loading paper, refilling ink, and replacing maintenance cartridge from the front of the printer. Equipped with a new shaftless roll holder, the TC-20 also allows users unfamiliar with large format printers to replace roll paper effortlessly even in tight spaces.

Continuous Printing for High Productivity, High-Quality Prints

The TC-20 supports up to 50 A3 or 100 A4 cut sheets2 with auto-switching between cut sheets and roll paper. For maximum productivity, users can load up to 100 A4 cut sheets in the standard ASF for continuous printing, and print CAD drawings or posters on A1/24-inch roll paper effortlessly from various applications. Other productivityenhancing features include 70 ml ink bottles for all four colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black) to cater for continuous printing of technical drawings, GIS maps & posters and an optional desktop basket for easy collection of prints.

Using all-colour pigment ink, the TC-20 produces clear, high-quality prints with fine lines and small characters on drawings comparable to prints from high-end large format printers. The prints do not smudge easily from highlighter marks or water spills.

Efficient Printing with Applications

Delivering excellent ease of use, the TC20 works with various free software and applications to help users work efficiently. With PosterArtist web application, users can create their own designs from a wide

selection of templates, and print marketing collateral such as posters and flyers on the TC-20 to meet different business needs. The large format printer works with free software, Direct Print Plus to help users send multiple prints in different formats such as PDF and TIFF. Users can preview the layout of files without launching dedicated application for each file, reducing time spent and print wastage effectively.

With Canon Print Inkjet/SELPHY application, users can check the usage of roll paper and ink via smartphones or tablets and keep the TC-20 up to date with the latest firmware. Users can also print documents stored in the cloud via PIXMA Cloud Link6 on the application.

Designed with Sustainability in Mind

As the first Canon large-format printer registered as a gold product in the field of imaging equipment products under the U.S. “EPEAT7” environmental assessment system, the TC-20 conforms to strict EPEAT standards as a product with high environmental performance. This includes low power consumption of approximately 28 W during operation and approximately 1.8 W during standby, and the use of more than 5% recycled plastic.

Mimaki launches first Direct To Film Inkjet Printer

Mimaki, manufacturer of inkjet printers and cutting systems, has announced its first ‘direct to film’ (DTF) inkjet printer, the TxF150-75, at its Global Innovation Days event. Utilising a heat-based transfer method, the printer is ideal for creating premium, customised merchandising, sportswear and various other promotional textile applications. This is the latest entry from Mimaki for the decorated apparel segment and made its EMEA at-show debut at Printwear & Promotion Live! in the UK (26th-28th February 2023).

DTF printing provides an easy and affordable process for decorating apparel, most commonly T-shirts. The design is initially printed directly onto a special transfer film, which is then sprinkled with hot-melt powder. Once heated and dried, the transfer sheet is ready to be applied to the fabric using a heat press.

Based on Mimaki’s existing 150 Series, one of its best-selling models, the new

TxF150-75 responds to the market need for a reliable, stable DTF technology. Built-in ink circulation system and degassed ink pack design prevent common DTF issues, such as poor ink ejection and white ink clogging. These core technologies, which also include the nozzle check unit and nozzle recovery system, all ensure that processes are carried out efficiently with minimal intervention needed.

Mark Sollman, Sr. Product Manager EMEA, Mimaki Europe comments, “Apparel decoration is a hugely popular and dynamic sector, one which we are already operating in with our other textile technologies. However, we could see the impact DTF technology has had on the industry in recent years, with its significant advantages over existing technologies. Namely, DTF avoids the time intensive process of plate creation in screen printing and the required weeding in traditional vinyl heat transfer. The technology can also create vibrant designs with its full colour printing capabilities. We’re excited to bring a solution to the market that is designed for those already active in the decorated apparel sector and those looking to enter it, which excels in usability, reliability and quality.”

As the company’s first entry into a new segment, Mimaki has created its own range of water-based pigment inks (PHT50)

especially for this solution. As of March 2023, these inks are OEKO-TEX® ECO PASSPORT certified, guaranteeing safety and environmental standards are met in line with Mimaki’s sustainability pledges. Unlike sublimation heat transfer printing, DTF is much more versatile when it comes to materials, able to work with more than just polyester and TC blended (polyester blended) materials, and on light or dark coloured fabrics.

The printer also comes with Mimaki’s RasterLink7 RIP software, allowing users to have full oversight and the ability to streamline the process from the design to the final product.
