FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, The Print Industry has been abuzz with installations and events especially seminars. Sivakasi-based Shunmuga Thermal System has recently invested in a Heidelberg CtP Suprasetter A106. The installation marks the company’s departure from the tradition of outsourcing its pre-press operation. The high-performance equipment Suprasetter A106 is designed for medium formats and can produce at up to 18 fullsized plates/hr (sizes ranging from 370x323mm to 930x1140mm). Malayala Manorama has added two more Mitsubishi to its fleet of presses.The largest selling Malayalam language newspaper with 2.4 million copies this time repeated order for tested DIAMONDSPIRIT-SA Presses. The Mitsubishi presses have been provided by Indian representative Newstech. At Graph Expo 2016, HP too announced that it is fulfilling its robust order pipeline from drupa 2016, delivering more than 300 HP Indigo digital presses to customers worldwide. The first BOBST MW CI flexo press ordered at drupa 2016 is due for delivery this October to the Mexican customer. The BOBST printing press will enable the company to widen its reach in the market of heat shrinkable sleeves.

We have covered J K Fine Prints – a renowned label business company lead by Mr. Himanshu Kapur. With production capacity reaching almost 20 times, the manpower remains almost the same for J K Fine Prints. The key printing equipment include Gallus presses, Omega’s, Letterpress label machines, Hot Stamping machine, fully automatic core cutting and a host of finishing equipment. Vinsak, distributors of Iwasaki for India and Middle East, has recently installed two Iwasaki TR2 Offset Intermittent presses. The first machine was installed at M/s Seljegat Printers at Sivakasi while the second machine has been installed at M/s Wintek Flexo Prints, Bangalore. Other recent installations by Vinsak include India’s first Print Master Hybrid at UFLEX Systems and Synchroline at A&A labels.

Key technology launches in the industry include JUMBO and STARFIRE by Monotech Systems at MediaExpo 2016, where Fujifilm displayed its newly launched and first-ever made in India Vybrant 1800 eco solvent printer. ColorJet launched its latest printer model Softjet Plus, a 2.5 as well as 3.2 metre soft signage printer and Polo Turbo - High Speed at Media Expo. Wide format major Mimaki too has announced that it would launch its new 3.2 m wide direct sublimation inkjet printer model Tx500P-3200DS in January 2017. Heidelberg has unveiled the new digital press for growing label market. The press, Gallus Digital Converting System DCS 340 is a joint development with Gallus based on inkjet technology from Fujifilm.

Brexit, the attempted coup in Turkey, armed conflict in Syria, the refugee crisis and populist tendencies in Europe, the election campaign in the USA: This year, the political events of the day are sure to dominate conversations at the Frankfurt Book Fair – and will be taken up in numerous events and panel discussions. After all, “Europe!” is this year’s slogan for the Weltempfang, the Book Fair’s cultural-political platform in Hall 3.1. “Since a purely economic approach to the European project clearly doesn’t have the necessary integrative power, we’d like to launch new discussions about substantive issues”, said Juergen Boos, Director of the Frankfurt Book Fair, on the occasion of a press conference in Frankfurt today. “We don’t want these discussions to take the form of navel-gazing by member states, but rather to incorporate current events and perspectives from around the globe and, in particular, debates about values such as freedom of speech and publication”. Boualem Sansal, Elif Shafak, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Ian Kershaw, Herfried Münkler, Timothy Garton Ash and Bernhard Pörksen are just a few of the prominent thinkers and academics who will help shape the programme in the Weltempfang – Centre for Politics, Literature and Translation.

The Frankfurt Book Fair’s Guest of Honour this year provides an excellent example of how we can overcome borders and, together, focus on similarities in 2016. For, this year, the Guest of Honour in Frankfurt isn’t a nation but a linguistic and cultural region. Flanders and the Netherlands’ exceptionally high number of new releases attests to how actively and successfully they have worked together: 422 titles in a wide range of genres, including literary fiction, non-fiction, poetry, children’s and young adult literature, comics and graphic novels. Compare this to the annual average of 85 new translations published in the German-speaking world in recent years.

What brings David Hockney, Jeff Jarvis, Julia Stoschek and Christiane zu Salm to the Frankfurt Book Fair this year? Why are many museums and institutions, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Google Cultural Institute exhibiting here? The answer is: THE ARTS+, a new fair within the Frankfurt Book Fair. With THE ARTS+ – which will take place for the first time from 19 to 23

October – the Frankfurt Book Fair is breaking new ground. With a one-day conference (Wednesday, 19 October 2016) and a five-day fair (Hall 4.1), THE ARTS+ offers an ideal place to discuss digitisation as an opportunity and to get new business models in the culture and creative industry off the ground.

Using artificial intelligence for content development, 3D printing in the fields of architecture and fashion, virtual reality environments in museums and for urban planning, and digital marketplaces for creative products are just a few examples of how new technologies can be integrated into the cultural sector. But how can stakeholders benefit from this?

These questions will be debated at THE ARTS+.

Just four weeks before the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair, it looks as though the number of exhibitors will be roughly the same as last year, while a slightly higher number of trade visitors is expected. The Frankfurt Book Fair shows strong growth in the field of children’s and young adult books, one of the bestperforming segments in the industry worldwide. A new area for international children’s and young adult publishers in Halls 5.1 and 6.1 will bring together 300 publishers – including many first-time exhibitors.

Yet children’s and young adult books aren’t the only booming area for rights and licensing – 460 tables have been sold in the Literary Agents & Scouts Centre (LitAg), and 692 agents from 31 countries will represent their authors here.

The awards an author receives are another measure of his or her importance and international standing: A new collaboration with the Man Booker Prize, one of the most important literary prizes in the Englishspeaking world, highlights outstanding literary voices – a number of which are expected in Frankfurt. The prize will be awarded in London on 25 October 2016.

It also gathers key players from other media, including the film and games industries.

Prof. Kamal Chopra is the new President of AIFMP The Annual General Meeting of AIFMP takes place in Bengaluru on 25th September 2016.

Prof.Kamal Chopra has been elected as the President of the All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP). The elections were held during the annual general body meeting of AIFMP at Bengaluru on 25th September 2016.

Prof. Chopra is associated with many printers and allied associations around the world.

Popularly known as ‘Man of Networking,’ Prof. Chopra visited the length and breadth of the country, persuading the printers to form associations and to bring them on one platform. Being associated with many Indian universities, spreading the knowledge of printing, he has also recently been nominated as the Hon. Professor at the Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication, China which is world’s largest printing university.

Besides being the General Secretary of Offset Printers’ Association, Prof.Chopra is also the member of the Academic Council of the GJ University of Science and Technology and Board of studies at MC University Bhopal. He is also the President of the Printers Club of India and the Editor in Chief of the Punjab Print.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof.Chopra stressed the need for strengthening micro

and small printers and would emphasise the need for government recognition for printing and packaging industry and ensure for AIFMP the best international standards.

“Printing is the basic necessity of mankind and is the biggest invention till date, but it is seen that no recognition is given to this key industry by the government of India. There is no department or ministry for printing in India and I would like to work for the proper identification of this industry in government, private and social circles at the same time I would like to establish complete networking

with the printers and allied associations of the country.”

The other office bearers of AIFMP during the 2016-17 tenure include: Mr. Anand Limaye, Honorary General Secretary; Mr. C Prakash Babu, Hon. Treasurer. The four Vice Presidents for the four regions are –Mr. Arun Gupta (North); Mr. CD Kumaravel (South); Mr. Rajinder Jain (West) and Mr. Sandip Sanyal (East). The technical seminar set out to inform the printers and equipment manufacturers engaged in Offset printing about UV LED curing. The idea behind the seminar was to assess the printers’ understanding of, and apprehensions about the emergence of UV LED curing systems in India. It also gave the printers the chance to meet both of the stakeholders involved in the transition to this technology – consumables and equipment suppliers. The aim was to create an

The salient points of the presentation covered the advantages of UV LED curing versus conventional UV mercury curing; the low maintenance cost, no ozone emission and lower power consumption of UV LED were highlighted. Flint Group’s product range, including the latest UV LED curing inks, were also presented to the audience.

The presentation ended with discussions on common printing problems and troubleshooting.

During the questions and answers session there was an open discussion about UV LED curing advantages, the cost implications and availability of these new generation inks.

Flint Group confirmed that they are actively looking to strengthen their capability to cater for demand for UV LED as it unfolds and develops in India. UV LED inks will be imported from Flint Group Europe and various sales and distribution methods, which include involving channel partners, local Flint Group stocks and direct imports are being explored.

Smurfit Kappa sets new Guinness World Record with world’s biggest cardboard box Smurfit Kappa has entered the record books by making the world’s largest cardboard box.

Measuring a staggering 40 metres by 20 metres, it was designed and manufactured by a team of creative thinkers in the Smurfit Kappa van Dam plant in the Netherlands.

The challenge was to make a box big enough to eclipse the previous world record set in 2014 in the US. The enormous cardboard construction, which was a feat of design and engineering, was unveiled at a special event for staff and customers at the plant in Helmond.

Speaking at the event, General Manager of Smurfit Kappa van Dam plant Wim Peeters said: “It’s not every day that you set a world record so there was a lot of excitement when

it was confirmed by Guinness. We’re used to making extra-large boxes every day but this one was in a league of its own!

“It was great to see it come together after all the hard work and planning that went into the design and manufacture. We’d like to thank everyone who came along and got behind our world record challenge. We’re looking forward to hanging our official Guinness World Record certificate on the wall!”

The record-breaking box has already gone on to be recycled and will be turned into new packaging for one of Smurfit Kappa’s customers in just 14 days. The Smurfit Kappa van Dam plant designs, manufactures and supplies corrugated cardboard packaging and specialises in extra large, heavy duty

packaging for a range of sectors including food, automotive and logistics.

Sivakasi’s Shunmuga Thermal System installs Heidelberg Suprasetter CtP A106 Sivakasi-based Shunmuga Thermal System invested in a Heidelberg Computer-to-Plate Suprasetter A106 to bring the CTP plate making process in-house, marking a departure from a tradition of outsourcing the pre-press operation.

This installation in Sivakasi, a major printing hub in South India, is indicative of a growing trend of printing firms that aim to internalize CTP plate making. Heidelberg already enjoys a strong position in Sivakasi’s printing industry.

“Our latest addition – the Heidelberg Suprasetter CtP 106 – is a game changer.

Having an in-house plate-making facility has helped cut down on outsourcing time and costs, with a tremendous positive impact on productivity and quality. Heidelberg’s pre-press and press standardization is a job well done,” comments Thavasi kumar, the cofounder of Shumunga Thermal Systems.

A high-performance, pre-press equipment designed for medium formats, the Suprasetter A106 can produce up to 18 fullsized plates /hour, and expose plates in sizes ranging from 370x323mm to 930x1140mm.

Exceptionally low power consumption renders a long laser life for the Suprasetter A106, a strong credential that appeals to customers like Shunmuga.

Established as a commercial printing unit in 1985 by self-made entrepreneurs and brothers – Thavasi Kumar and Sampath Kumar, the three-decade old company embarked on a historic journey without much fanfare, printing calendars and notebooks.

Later, with the entry of two more siblings – Prakash Prabu and Suresh Babu, the familyowned business got a complete marketing makeover.

Today, it operates out of a 12,000 square feet production facility, and continues to specialize in printing school notebooks.

The production shop floor is equipped with a Heidelberg SM 102 five-colour press with perfector – operating in multiple shifts, in addition to two other two-colour and four-colour presses. The Postpress division includes state-of the-art cutting, finishing and lamination equipments.

the Prinect workflow embellishes our press portfolio. Such an imperative and impressive prepress service in-house will support our endeavour to capitalize on market opportunities, expand our customer base and strengthen our professional offerings,” Sampath Kumar remarks confidently.

Ganesh Kumar, Senior Sales Manager – Heidelberg states, “Heidelberg’s proprietary Intelligent Diode Systems (IDS) insulates plate-setters against production failures.

The IDS ensures that there is no snag in operations, even if a diode fails.”

At the heart of the Suprasetter A106, lies Heidelberg’s proprietary thermal laser technology. The exclusive laser system fosters, excellent imaging quality, and precise optics. The emitters switch “on” only while

exposing the plate, thus drastically reducing the power consumed, while also preventing long downtimes.

Any adverse impact from external temperature is prevented through an integrated cooling system. A temperature stabilizer maintains the temperature of all the components relevant to imaging at a constant level, so the imaging of printing plates always happens under the same conditions.

Heidelberg India hosts Seminar cum Prepress product demos in Sivakasi Heidelberg India joined hands with the Sivakasi Master Printer Association (SMPA) to host a seminar in Sivakasi, one of the key printing hubs of Tamilnadu. Reinforcing Heidelberg’s position in this major market, the seminar focused on the latest innovations in print technology across the globe.

In his presentation, Ganesh Kumar, Sr. Sales Manager of Heidelberg India who handles equipments sales for Sivakasi emphasized the advantages of fully automated presses and discussed the ‘dernier cri’ from DRUPA. He also expounded on the benefits of Anicolor press, which is steadily gaining inroads into the Indian printing sector.

Ashokan Krishnamoorthy, AGM – Product Management & Prepress, highlighted the significance of prepress solutions in commercial and packaging printing. In his

address, he also discussed the patented IDS (Intelligent Diode System) without Suprasetter CtP Systems.

Indukalpa Saikia, Production Manager Digital solutions/Postpress, presented specific product demonstrations on Versafire, the digital printing solution from Heidelberg that combines the advantage of offset and digital systems. The demo also included Polar Digi cut solutions, the laser die-cut technologies from Polar.

In conjunction with the seminar, Heidelberg India also conducted a two-day pre-press demo on Prinect Workflow Solutions on the 5th and 6th of August. The audience totaling 85 for this two-day conference included a mix of commercial and packaging printers.

The huge draw of the event was the one-toone session, which resonated well with the participants.

KBA-Sheetfed and ACTEGA seal strategic partnership KBA-Sheetfed and ACTEGA Coatings & Sealants have forged a strategic alliance in the field of inline finishing. The new cooperation agreement further intensifies their existing partnership and places activities on an even higher, strategic level. ACTEGA products which have been tested on Rapida sheetfed offset presses are to carry the seal of quality “Approved and licensed varnish by KBA”.

The prime objective of the cooperation is

to ensure the availability of high-quality coating systems for KBA’s high-performance sheetfed offset presses. Already during commissioning, the use of correspondingly approved products under uniform conditions will serve to establish application standards.

This, in turn, will safeguard both outstanding finishing quality and high performance in the inline coating process.

All users who obtain their coating products through the ACTEGA sales network will benefit from the predefined product standards, as new products will already be tested and optimised for use on Rapida sheetfed offset presses. On the bottom line, the cooperation can thus be seen as a further means to maximise the business success of users whose work involves the application of varnish coatings in an inline process.

KBA and ACTEGA will be cooperating at global level. The plans to date include joint product and sales training, print demonstrations at KBA, at fairs and at customer events, the development of appropriate starter kits to be supplied with new presses, and continuous further

development of the products concerned.

To this end, regular tests will be conducted on the Rapida presses installed at the KBA customer centre. The cooperation covers water-based, UV, HR-UV and LED-UV coatings.

In addition, KBA-Sheetfed and ACTEGA have further joint projects in the pipeline, such as the annual ACTEGA-Terra calendar and useroriented marketing activities.

Heidelberg presentation at Print Con 2016 Printing Knowledge Conference, Kanchipuram: 31st July 2016 Tamil Nadu Master Printers Federation organized “Print Con 2016”, a seminar on latest trends and technology in the printing industry.

The seminar was held at Kanchipuram and was attended by nearly 500 small and medium Printers apart from Print buyers and various association members.

Knowledge Sharing Workshop on Lamination 2nd Knowledge Sharing Workshop organized by MMS at the Mumbai Mudrak Sangh Training Centre, Babulnath, on 11th August 2016 Mr. Pradeep Bodkhe, Cosmo Films, one of the global leaders of BOPP Films, introduced the printers present at the workshop to their vision 2020 which aims at becoming the most preferred global brand offering value added BOPP films for packaging, labels, lamination and industrial applications.

The films are recyclable and have a huge demand worldwide. Being the largest exporter of BOPP film from India, Cosmo Films has production units based in India, Korea and USA with an installed capacity of 136,000 MT. The company plans to expand capacity with the installation of Bruckner (10.4 mtrs.) BOPP line of 64000 TPA by early 2017. This will take the total installed capacity of Cosmo Films to 200,000 TPA. It was a first of its kind workshop on the subject “Lamination”. Those who attended were of the view that the learning from this Seminar was beyond their expectations and they were now abreast with the new technologies available. There will be another session by Cosmo Films in October. The next workshop on Colour Management takes place in September.

P V Chandran elected INS president P V Chandran, managing editor of the Mathrubhumi daily, has been elected the president of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS). He was selected to the post at executive committee meeting held after the 76th annual general body meeting at Bengaluru. He succeeds Kiran B Vadodaria of Sambhaav Metro.

Chandran joined Mathrubhumi as director in 1977 and was the executive member of the INS for a long time. He became the vice president of the INS in 2013 and deputy president in 2014.

Malayala Manorama adds two more presses to its Mitsubishi fleet and the fifth press has been in operation since June 2016. The Malayala Manorama has been satisfied with the performance of the DIAMONDSPIRIT-SA and the Project management done by the Mitsubishi Team.

Malayala Manorama will be installing two more DIAMONDSPIRIT-SA Presses after having successfully installed and taken into production five presses.

The Malayala Manorama, the largest selling Malayalam newspaper with 2.4 million copies, ordered five DIAMONDSPIRIT-SA Presses from Mitsubishi in 2013 to enhance its production efficiencies. The first press was taken in to production in November 2014,

Guaranteeing fast deliveries to Cortina users KBA and Apex start cooperation for the reconditioning of anilox rollers In July 2016 KBA-Digital & Web in WĂźrzburg signed a cooperation agreement with Dutch technology specialists Apex International regarding the coating and engraving of anilox rollers for its waterless KBA Cortina web offset press. The principal objective of this partnership is to guarantee the fast deliveries of newly coated and engraved anilox rollers to Cortina users when overhauling becomes necessary due to wear after several years of production.

Twenty users have opted for the compact and waterless KBA Cortina so far, accounting for a total of 86 towers and 688 printing units. Nineteen of those presses, with 680 printing units and an identical number of anilox rollers, are in daily operation. The first press line was commissioned eleven years ago, and a certain degree of wear and need for anilox roller replacement is thus only to be expected. KBA estimates the lifetime of a Cortina anilox roller to be around 200 million cylinder revolutions, though many a roller has already been in service for considerably longer. Alongside the ink and the blade contact pressure, the nature of the ceramic coating and the type of engraving are essential factors influencing the life cycle.

Extensive expertise on both sides As a leading manufacturer of anilox and metering rollers, Apex International possesses vast experience and know-how in the field. In fact, it holds patents for the so-

called GTT anilox technology, an engraving geometry based on open, slalom-style channels, which are designed to achieve an extremely homogenous ink application while reducing wear to a minimum. The inner body of the double-walled Cortina anilox rollers, in turn, has been patented by KBA; here, the integrated temperature regulation permits fine control of the ink application.

Accordingly, the anilox rollers for a Cortina press are more expensive than the standard film rollers of a conventional inking unit, as a result of which reconditioning with a new ceramic coating and laser engraving is a meaningful option.

To date, the Cortina anilox rollers have been coated and engraved at the KBASheetfed factory in Radebeul, which also manufactures and engraves hundreds of rollers for anilox coating units each year.

The laser engraving machine used for the Cortina rollers, however, is starting to show its age and has become increasingly susceptible to disturbances and delays.

After a thorough economic analysis and consideration of all conceivable alternatives, the KBA management has therefore decided to outsource its coating and engraving requirements rather than investing in new laser engraving equipment. Another aspect which clinched the decision in favour of Apex International was the latter’s experience from its manufacturing of high-quality anilox rollers using the GTT technology; such rollers had already been used with good results on several Cortina installations before official announcement of the cooperation.

No change in replacement procedures For the Cortina user, there are no changes in the procedures for roller repairs and replacement. A worn roller must still be sent to the KBA factory in Radebeul, as before.

The interior of the roller is there inspected thermographically for contamination. If necessary, any contamination is either flushed out or brush-cleaned, as appropriate.

The roller is subsequently filled with nitrogen as corrosion protection and sent to Apex for renewal of the surface. At Apex, the roller is stripped, coated with a new ceramic layer and laser-engraved using the GTT technology. The warranty of at least 200 million cylinder revolutions given by KBA remains unaffected.

KBA and Apex have committed to pooling their specific anilox roller know-how for the waterless offset process and plan to continue development of the existing solutions together. In addition, current users will benefit from the increased stability of the repair process, with high-quality results and short delivery times. The same naturally applies also in the case of new rollers, whether for a new or expanded Cortina installation or as replacement spares.

Canon India appoints Eddie Udagawa Vice President Will be spearheading the Consumer Imaging and Information Centre (CII) division Canon India made a major announcement with the appointment of Mr. Eddie Udagawa as the new Vice President of the company.

Mr. Udagawa, in his new capacity, will be leading the Consumer Imaging and Information Centre (CII) division. The CII embraces both Consumer Systems Products (CSP) for laser and inkjet printers and Image Communication Products (ICP) for camera products. Xerox named to Dow Jones Sustainability World and North America Indexes Xerox has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the first time and the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index for the third consecutive year.

Heidelberg unveils new digital press for the growing label market Joint development with Gallus based on inkjet technology from Fujifilm

Heidelberg is unveiling a new digital press for the growth market of digitally printed labels. This represents the next milestone in the company’s strategic realignment, particularly in terms of significantly expanding sales in the digital sector over the medium term.

Heidelberg and Gallus jointly developed the Gallus DCS 340 digital label printing press in less than one year. It is designed to meet growing demand for the cost-effective production of short, medium, and versioned runs in label printing.

The rapid progress in rolling out the digital strategy shows that the partnerships Heidelberg has nurtured with various suppliers are proving highly successful when it comes to developing new digital printing systems for industrial applications. For example, the Gallus Group, which was recently taken over in full by Heidelberg, has held a customer event to present the forthcoming Gallus DCS 340 (DCS = Digital Converting System) digital label printing press, which is based on inkjet technology from Fujifilm.

Heidelberg and Gallus jointly developed the digital production system for industrial label printing in less than one year. Heidelberg is to manufacture the inkjet unit at its Wiesloch-Walldorf site, while the flexo and converting units for the new press will be produced at the Gallus plant in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The system is slated to enter series production in the coming year and will meet growing demand for the cost-effective production of short, medium, and versioned runs in label printing.

“We are pursuing a growth strategy in our digital printing operations,” says Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach. “Today, less than twelve months after we started our collaboration with Fujifilm, we can stand alongside Gallus and unveil the first print-ready system. The only way to rapidly leverage growth potential in digital printing is through partnerships.

Having completed its takeover of Gallus Holding AG in the summer, Heidelberg has reinforced its commitment to the growth segment of digital label printing. Ferdinand Rüesch, former owner of Swissbased Gallus Holding AG, supports the strategic realignment that Heidelberg is pursuing. With a total stake of around nine percent, he is the company’s biggest individual shareholder.

“It was the right time to take this step. It is only by working with a strong partner such as Heidelberg that Gallus can overcome the long-term challenges facing digital printing in our sector and still make full use of the potential that is out there,” says Rüesch.

The newly unveiled digital printing system has been designed for the self-adhesive labels market. The global print volume for these labels is growing by around four percent a year. Although only around five percent of this volume is printed digitally, this figure is rising rapidly. Indeed, digital printing is driving change in this highly promising market segment. It is anticipated that, in the medium term, just under half of the presses sold in this sector will be digital.

By launching this new technology, Heidelberg and Gallus will be actively shaping change in the business models used in this segment and offering users a versatile and cost-effective solution.

At Labelexpo, MPS introduced together with EMT the Chameleon RobustCutside load die station. Also, MPS partnered with Kodak to perform live press demonstrations at the MPS booth,pushing the limits of flexo technology. The interest has been overwhelmingly positive.

At Labelexpo Americas 2016, MPS experienced record North American sales.

MPS demonstrated its flagship flexo press: the EF. The EF automated multi-substrate press was built in Green Bay (WI). MPS invested heavily in a North American organization including local assembly, sales, marketing and customer service.

After starting a local organization, MPS grew significantly in the North American market the past years.

Partnering with Kodak, MPS demonstrated how flexo label printers can deliver a level of

print quality and cost competitiveness that will enable them to compete head-on with digital, offset and gravure suppliers. During one of the demonstrations Kodak showed the “Do More with Four” technology: an eight colour job was produced by using four colours only (CMYK), significantly reducing set-up waste and time. The contract for the new press was signed at drupa, where the press had its world premiere. Delivery is scheduled for October 2016.

BST introduces innovations for the labelling and packaging industry At the 15th edition of LabelExpo Americas, BST’s newly introduced PowerScope 5000 and the Tubescan EagleView generated huge visitor interest. In addition to presenting information on innovative solutions for narrow web applications, BST had live demonstrations of the Tubescan EagleView and the Shark Lex. Mark Lambrecht, President of BST North America, remarked “I am extremely proud of this team. What a tremendous effort by everyone to make this show a success.”

Label and package printing professionals from all over the world came to Chicago to educate themselves about the latest technologies for the label and narrow web market. More than 17,000 visitors broke all previous records for the show.

Amongst numerous exhibitors the BST booth was highly frequented by visitors from the industry. After three productive days with many new business leads, the company looks back upon the most successful LabelExpo so far. According to Mr. Lambrecht, the activity in the BSTNA booth exceeded the company’s goals. At the

conclusion of the show, the company saw a 135% increase in the number of leads from the previous LabelExpo.

With live presentations, visitors could see both the Tubescan EagleView and Shark Lex in action on a rewinder. Visitors could see first-hand the first 100% inspection system in the world to incorporate both a 100% inspection camera and a detail viewing camera all in one system. Live demonstrations also featured the product’s easy setup and use.

Scan. Another highlight presented by BSTNA was the iPQ Check surface, which allows 100% surface inspection during production and which supports subsequent processes in an optimum way.

Visitors were also very interested in the high-performance iPQ-Spectral system for its innovative solution for the measurement of absolute colour values. A highlight was the integrated evaluation function which provides great support to the printers since it offers concrete recommendations in case of colour deviations measured inline.

The new Powerscope 5000 not only created a lot of interest in the booth, it also resulted in customer orders. Orders were taken for fifteen Powerscope 5000 systems during the show.

Flint Group announces appointment of Friedrich von Rechteren Flint Group has announced the formation of a central Business Development unit for the Flexographic Products Division, located in Stuttgart. Friedrich von Rechteren, while being the head of this unit, will simultaneously assume the responsibility for Sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

He will also be a member of the Flexographic Products Senior Leadership Team.

Friedrich von Rechteren has extensive experience in various commercial roles building, growing and running businesses in the chemical industry. He has held cross regional and cross-functional Business Development, Product Director, Marketing and Commercial management roles in specialty as well as base chemical markets.

Mr. von Rechteren holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany.

The growing label business company grows under the leadership of the fourth generation Himanshu Kapur and Karan Kapur. The efficiency comes from financial discipline, quality assurance and modern business management systems.

Once Himanshu is able to get these additional equipment in, he says the capacity will increase by 200% and is confident that the company will double up in sales in the next five years.

Brothers Surendra Kapur and Jatindra Kapur, Directors of Jai Kaushal Industries and R K Papers, Mumbai mentored their sons Himanshu Kapur and Karan Kapur into label printing business with their start-up enterprise J K Fine Prints. While their fathers and mentors continue to run their own continuous stationery, business forms and label printing unit R K Papers, their young boys continue to grow their label business efficiently with financial discipline, quality assurance and modern business management systems in place.

The plan is to increase capacity to 200% and double up sales in next five years time. Three additional press rooms with storage areas for toolings and plates are already in place – waiting just for the presses.

Surendra Kapur has been an early entrant into label industry and the founder president of LMAI (Label Manufacturers association of India). He draws immense respect from the label fraternity in India.

On one of my recent visits to Taloja, Mumbai, where J K Fine Print is located, I had the opportunity to visit and interview Himanshu Kapur and see for myself the path traversed in these last few years.

Since Karan looks after marketing and sales, operating out of their Nariman point office in South Mumbai, I could not meet him. Himanshu, an MA in Psychology, and Karan, an MBA from Mumbai’s SP Jain Institute, were just 23 years and 24 years old respectively when J K Fine Prints was setup. It was a pleasure to see Himanshu now as a much learned label printer – confident and in control of what he was doing. I asked him whether he thought of opting for other careers before starting this enterprise and whether he faced any initial starting troubles, he said, “There was no problem in starting the company as Dad (Surendra Kapur) had trained me well for two years before starting this venture.” He further added that since the family was in labels he never thought of anything else, “I knew that for me, it has been labels, always!”

The Letterpress fans started with Letterpress Printing Technology Due to a talented and experienced mentor behind, they never faced any typical business nightmares.

Kapurs have traditionally been fans of Letterpress Printing. They even started this company with

Letterpress Printing technology. For Himanshu the most satisfying moment till date has been the shift from 4 colour Flatbed Letterpress Printing to Flexographic Rotary Printing by installing a 7 colour Gallus press. Months before the press arrived, he had spent endless hours on online learning to know nuances of the Flexographic Printing Process. When the press came, he was fully prepared for efficiently managing the business. The results were significantly positive and he shifted most of his jobs from Letterpress to Flexo. I asked him which was the most complex job that he has done till date. “Though there are many, yet I would mention the Kid Baion (Merck) label that we did. It was an 11 colour job that we compressed to 6+1 colour and achieved excellence,” says Himanshu. He proudly mentions that the elders do not interfere with their work and rather compliment them for having achieved success.

It was amazing to see that when they implemented their expansion plans, three different additional press rooms have been constructed providing space for three more label presses planned for future. All the rooms have storage areas for toolings and plates. Only the presses need to move in!

was originally built to 18000 square feet by adding another floor. Presently they are working with two Gallus flexo label presses, two Letterpress label machines, three Omega’s, One Hot Stamping machine, fully automatic core cutting and a host of finishing equipment. As availability and management of manpower continues to become challenging, Himanshu has extensively indulged in automation. The automatic core cutter is one such equipment that cuts down time and reduces 3-4 persons permanently cutting cores. Plate cleaning was another area where they employed one person on each machine but with installation of an automatic plate cleaning machine they have just one person doing the job. They started with strength of 35 employees in 2006 and gradually went up to 70. With Himanshu‘s efforts they now produce more with just 35 people. He asserts that once he as an ERP system which he is working on in place, he will be able to reduce the workforce by another 4-5 persons.

Plans for capacity expansion The youthful urge to grow is evident in these young men. When they started they were consuming just 15000-20000 square meters of label stock per month. This has now grown

Though not actively involved in sales yet when asked about competition, Himanshu emphatically states that price is surely an area of concern and says, “We would prefer to lose a customer rather than reduce prices.” As for Digital Printing, he doesn’t plan to invest in the technology for another 7 years.

They have so far not invested in plate making capabilities because Himanshu believes that this job has to be left to professionals so that the product is delivered to them perfect and defect free. Maybe a day later in life, when the workflow and workload demands so, he may invest but as of now he does not wish to add a department in his company that will not produce additional revenue. Moreover, he is comfortable with the quality delivered when plates are outsourced.

Himanshu Kapur is not really the gen next in the Kapur family. Actually he is the fourth generation of the family patriarch Lala Jai Dayal Kapur, whose son Ram Kumar Kapur, Himanshu’s grandfather setup, R K Papers in Mumbai to manufacture paper stationery.

Surendra Kapur took over the reins of the manufacturing unit and expanded into labels.

Jatindra Kapur looked after marketing and sales. Now Himanshu and Karan run J K Fine Print. With a strong heritage and deep roots in business, this young duo is expected to rise exponentially in the label industry.

Vinsak installs two Iwasaki TR2 Offset Intermittent presses Recently appointed by Iwasaki as the distributor for India and the Middle East, Vinsak has made two recent installations of the state-of-the-art Iwasaki TR2 Offset presses.

The first machine was installed at M/s Seljegat Printers at Sivakasi. Seljegat operates from a 80,000 sq.ft. manufacturing facility serving customers from diverse industries with its pressure sensitive labelling and shrink sleeve solutions. “We have a long history of relationship with Iwasaki,” said Mr V S Raveendran, MD, Seljegat Printers.

“Starting from the first series of VSD and RUH flat bed and semi rotary machines that we purchased when we began our journey into labels, we have grown together over the years with Iwasaki. The latest addition has been a state-of-the-art TR2 offset intermittent press, which puts us at the next level of offering high quality Litho printed labels for our customers in short to medium runs,” he added.

With the lowest cost of origination for offset, the intermittent process which offers unlimited repeat sizes & low set up web waste, Seljegat finds this process a complimentary technology to their flexo presses and better placed to compete against short run digital work as well. The machine offers additional ability to to print on textured substrates. “We are happy that M/s Vinsak has taken over the sales and support of the Iwasaki range. Our earlier experience with Vinsak’s support for ABG finishing equipment has been extremely delightful,” concludes Raveendran.

New ColorForecast assures correct colour reproduction Xeikon has unveiled X-800 5.0 software.

Jeroen Van Bauwel, Xeikon’s Director Product Management says: “We have created the X-800 5.0 with our four cornerstones of development in mind – improvements in colour quality, moving closer to green button printing, helping facilitate management and integration with the customer’s environment.”

One key new feature is the ColorForecast tool that allows custom or brand colours to be reproduced correctly time after time no matter what the final substrate is.

“ColorForecast predicts if the file will print to the desired results. It can test and verify if the colour will match output. This reduces set up times and waste. Customers don’t have to print, check, send samples, wait for

a response, modify settings and then print again. It can all be done offline,” comments Van Bauwel.

Another feature ensures Xeikon presses get up to quality faster, improving machine throughput and efficiency. Bauwel explains: “We are very good in having stable output but with this new, incremental, calibration we can create the curve faster and more accurately. As a result, Xeikon presses can get up to quality faster improving machine throughput and efficiency.” For more complex delivery, Xeikon has developed shuffle imposition. It allows seamless mixed label production.

Van Bauwel explains the positive impact on profitability margins: “We see set up

waste in finishing reduced from 17% to 12% by integrating X-800 workflow with MIS environment. This equated to a 30% waste reduction.”

Van Bauwel concludes: “By fine tuning the whole process waste of expensive substrates is reduced and press time is maximised.”

Xeikon X-800 5.0 will be released at the beginning of 2017 and will be made available for all MyPress-based engines.
