Our Shared Strength As you may know, our beloved friend and esteemed president Joe Rizza retired in April after eight years of exceptional service to our Foundation. His leadership and dedication have set the bar high and we have all benefited from his knowledge and experience.

I am privileged to begin working as your new president. I have spent more than 20 years as a professional fundraiser, the last seven of which have been here at Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation. Previously, I was a senior fundraiser in Wisconsin, working at an adult teaching hospital, children’s hospital and medical school. After more than two decades, I still find great meaning in this work which helps alleviate human suffering, facilitates an exceptional patient experience, and shows our community—particularly the most disadvantaged—that we care.

In partnership with our Board and staff, we will continue building on the tremendous impact of our Foundation over the last 50 years. At the heart of our work is facilitating a great giving experience for every donor, no matter the size of their gift.

In this time of constant change in healthcare, we will continue adapting to keep up with the ever-growing need. I look forward to finding out just how much we can accomplish together. I can’t say thank you enough for your interest and support.

Jeannine DANIELS

Mark Colyer, BSN, RN, and Cindy Hinson, RN, OCN, (back) have been with Jennifer Andreas (front right, with mother Jeannine Daniels) since her first monthly infusion treatment over 20 years ago. Jennifer has beat the odds to become a mother of two and continues to lead a busy, productive life.

“Any experience,” said Jeannine Daniels, “can turn out to be positive.” Although she hoped for a different diagnosis after her daughter Jennifer Andreas was diagnosed with an immune disorder, hypogammaglobulinanemia, in 1993, the happy ending ultimately came in a different form. Instead of mourning the condition – which requires monthly treatments and causes other health issues, including a serious liver condition – she turned her ongoing experiences into a strength that she now shares to help others.

Along those lines, Jeannine has served as a Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation board member for more than 18 years. It has been a perfect fit for this businesswoman, who once owned a jewelry store, was chairman of the board at First National Bank of Santa Fe, and serves on the board of the New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool. Her personal goal as chair of the Foundation’s Allocations committee, which awards funding to internal requests for support, is to stretch every donor dollar and fulfill as many requests as possible. As part of this effort, she applies “Business 101” principles in her dogged search for ways to save money.

When discussing her many contributions, Jeannine, who is also a Luminary Circle member, points out that her motivation comes down to one thing: using her unique experiences and talents to help others. “Donating to a hospital is probably the greatest money you can give,” she said. “For us, it has been a life-saving place for 26 years. I am grateful and just want to give back!”

Jeannine has served on numerous Foundation committees: Allocations, Executive, Finance, Governance and Daffodil Days. She has donated jewelry for auctions, given pearls to PRIDE nursing honorees and helps with special projects and events.

Good cardiologists can explain the mechanics of a heart in the body. Great cardiologists understand the implications those mechanics have for a person’s life.

They take the time to listen, reassure, understand, explain and tell the truth—even when the news is not good. To them, a patient is not just a person, but a friend.

Heart and Vascular Care cardiologists have received the highest number of Guardian Angel recognition gifts from grateful patients – some of them more than once.

Following is a brief glimpse into these cardiologists’ unique styles of compassionate care that create lasting impressions on their patients.

With his easygoing manner and playful sense of humor, Dr. Friedman puts his patients at ease and their fears to rest.

Knowing that the term “heart disease” can inspire the worst kind of thoughts, he provides realistic data to help them see the best of the situation.

“Many people live long and productive lives despite having significant heart disease,” he said. “I try to put it all in perspective and tell them the things they can do to improve the quality and length of their lives.”

A former tennis pro, Dr. Friedman still plays an occasional match, and writes and performs folk and country music on guitar, harmonica and mandolin.

“People don’t always make the decisions we would make. Their choices are related to family, friends, culture, beliefs and money. I think it’s important to take care of patients within their context and not ours.”

“I tell patients to do a little bit every day. A little tweak on their diet. Five minutes of extra walking. A little something every day becomes a huge change in 365 days.”

Dr. Vanessa Marin has a knack for helping patients cope with difficult situations, getting to know them through her natural friendliness and genuine insight. Some are frightened and need time to accept what’s happening to them, while others are worried about taking medication or the effects of their condition on family members. “Once you know someone’s concerns, you can understand what they’re going through and find a way to make (their treatment) work,” she says.

Dr. Marin and her husband, Dr. Guilherme Marin, have two children, ages 10 and 7. They love to go skiing, and try to run outdoors and go hiking whenever possible.

A lot of times, that’s all it takes.”

Having once been a nurse, Dr. Jane Schauer has a personable way of connecting with her patients and is known for her “nononsense” approach in helping them learn to help themselves.

With a PhD in exercise physiology and a willingness to incorporate holistic and nonmedical practices, she knows that there are many routes to achieving good health. As such, she encourages patients to explore options, including phone apps and YouTube videos, to find eating plans and exercises that work for them.

“There are no shoulds, and there are no nevers,” she says.

“Your job is to figure out what works for you.”

The rowing machine whooshes to life as Marion Lovato kicks into high gear, her effort as steady as her breathing.

Just over a year ago, Marion weighed 298 pounds, was connected to oxygen 24/7 and couldn’t exercise for more than two minutes straight. Although she had once worked as a certified nursing assistant, a stroke in 2015 at the age of 43, along with other health problems, turned this career caregiver into someone who needed to be cared for.

That began to change when she entered the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab program at the Presbyterian Healthplex in January 2018. Through supervised exercise, nutritional support and information to help manage her condition, she lost more than 100 pounds and gained a new sense of confidence.

Stories like Marion’s are not uncommon, said Pam Haines, Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab program manager. “Many of the patients we see are desperate to feel better,” she explained. “The results and benefits can be so profound that people will often continue as Healthplex gym members after their program is complete.”

With this kind of success, the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab program has reached maximum capacity. That’s one reason why it is the beneficiary of this year’s Laughter is the Best Medicine fundraising event, as well as a recipient of additional funds from Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation’s quarterly funding process – all to help build a much-needed west side expansion at the PMG High Resort facility in Rio Rancho beginning in January 2020.

This is welcome news for future patients who, like Marion, will find the guidance and encouragement they need to reclaim the lives they want. “The program helped me make changes at home—that’s how I started losing weight,” said Marion. “My husband and I used to try getting healthy on our own but would always give up. Now we’re constantly moving forward … there is no turning back.”

Cost Effectiveness of Cardiac Rehabilitation after Myocardial Infarction.

Marion, a member of the Santo Domingo Pueblo, is now able to carry on her family’s tradition as a jewelry artisan. Her supplemental oxygen, which she now only uses at night, previously prevented her from working near chemicals and flames.

The Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab program at the Healthplex serves up to 160 patients per day, three days a week. The new west side facility, located in Rio Rancho, will see about 50-60 per day, which will reduce strain on the Healthplex.

As a participant in one of the most comprehensive programs of its kind, each patient is closely followed by a team of physicians, nurses, exercise specialists, a PhD exercise physiologist, a respiratory therapist, a diabetes educator and a registered dietitian.

A nurse or paramedic monitors all patients by telemetry during their first four or five visits. S/he notifies a clinician on the floor if abnormalities are detected.

BEGINNINGS Just as daffodils sprout each spring as the first hint of warmer and brighter days ahead, we have returned annually for the past 35 years to bring hope to our hospice patients and families through Daffodil Days.

In its 36th year, Daffodil Days had a new and purposeful mission: providing options to our hospice patients with the development of Presbyterian Hospice House. Once constructed, this 10-bed facility will be the first of its kind in the Albuquerque area, designed to fulfill an unmet need for specialized hospice care in our community. It’s hospice care, but more importantly, it’s home.

With the dedication and support of volunteers, sponsors and community members like you, we raised $166,000 for Presbyterian Hospice House in 2019.

PRESBYTERIAN VOLUNTEER SERVICES Endowment Supports Staff Education Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation is grateful to announce a generous $250,000 contribution from Presbyterian Volunteer Services. This latest gift will establish an endowment, the Volunteer Services Health Professions Scholarship Fund, to support continuing education, including tuition, books and other expenses, for non-nursing clinical staff starting in 2020. This new endowment will complement Volunteer Services’ existing Nursing Education Fund.

“We chose to create this fund in honor of the Foundation’s 50th anniversary,” said Richard McGrath, Presbyterian Volunteer Services Board chair. “We wanted to commemorate our lengthy partnership with a meaningful gift that will elevate our non-nursing staff also involved in patient care.”

“Volunteer Services contributes so much to our organization,” said Rick Scott, Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation president. “Not only do they step up to care for patients alongside staff each day, they also support educational opportunities that help those staff thrive and grow.”

Volunteer Services has a long-standing history of support for the Foundation. They began their legacy of giving as the Women’s Auxiliary in 1969 by contributing their first major gift of $8,000. In 1987, Volunteer Services established an endowment with gift shop proceeds that has grown to more than $5 million in value.

Today, Volunteer Services is the second-largest donor in Foundation history, having contributed more than $8.7 million from gift shop proceeds and other fundraising efforts. There were more than 775 Albuquerque and Rio Rancho-area volunteers who collectively served 98,978 hours in 2018—the equivalent of a $2,443,760 gift to Presbyterian.

EXCELLENCE With his confident stride and contagious smile, it’s easy to recognize Ed Chacon as he approaches from down the hall. Arriving at the nurses’ station, he exchanges wisecracks with the staff on duty and then heads into his office, ready to take on whatever happens next. He absolutely loves his job, and it shows.

The assistant nurse manager for the hospital’s surgical and short-term care units, Ed has been with Presbyterian since 2015. After spending 21 years in the U.S. Coast Guard as an independent duty corpsman, he chose nursing to continue doing the work he cares about the most: attending to patients at their bedside, advocating for his crew and taking care of others.

As an extension of his generosity and personal mission, Ed included Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation in his will, inspired in part by a Foundation grant that sent six of his nurses for training. Several of those nurses now want to earn their certification from the Academy of Medical Surgical Nursing, and that’s an education that Ed values both for its benefits to the individual and its ripple effects in the community.

“If taking care of my staff, indirectly, through the Foundation, will make it better for them, make it better for the patient and for Presbyterian as a whole, then I’m going to do whatever I can to support that.”
