LANTERN Presentation High School Parent Newsletter | September 2015
Dear Parents and Friends of Presentation, We had a very successful opening of school. The incoming ninth graders experienced two days of orientation to Pres which appeared to make them more relaxed and comfortable on the first day of school. Our opening liturgy centered on the school-wide theme of “Merciful Like the Father,” which mirrors Pope Francis’ Jubilee of Mercy.
I do hope we can model a little more mercy towards our neighbors and each other when it comes to driving practices. We are all navigating in a very small space; there simply is no room for violations of the law or rude behavior. I am very concerned about the safety of our neighborhood children and Pres students. We can do better! As is my custom, going forward, my monthly letters will be on topics pertaining to parenting, student wellness and general educational issues. Of course, I will continue to recommend books that I find valuable and of potential interest to you. We plan to begin a parent blog, where we can discuss these books and have more free-flowing conversation. Stay tuned for details.

My first recommendation this year is How to Raise An Adult by Julie Lythcott-Haims, a former dean at Stanford University. The subtitle gives a strong clue about the content of the book: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success. As both an educator and parent who lives in the heart of Silicon Valley, her message hits home and is an invaluable read. As she states so eloquently, we must stop viewing our role as raising children and focus on raising adults. We need to prepare our children FOR LIFE not shelter them FROM LIFE. I could not agree more. Happy reading and blogging! By the time you read this, Back To School Night will have come and gone. I hope you enjoyed the evening and concluded, as I do every day, that your daughters are in good hands. The teachers at Pres are competent educators and truly good people who care about students and their progress. May your daughters never take for granted the gift you have given them. Take care. If we can help in anyway, do not hesitate to ask. God Bless! Mary Miller
