Letter from the Principal Dear Parents and Friends of Presentation, We are excited to welcome you back for the 2018-19 school year! I hope you and your family had a wonderful summer. We have been busy preparing the school for your daughter’s return and are eagerly awaiting both her and your arrival back on campus.

The 2018-2019 school year will be an exciting one. We are welcoming 200 freshmen members of the class of 2022, as well as 12 new faculty and staff. I am also excited to introduce you to our mostly new administrative team; I hope you say hello and get to know them at our opening events.

Tim Case is returning to Presentation for his 12th year and his 4th as the Vice Principal of Student Activities. He brings great knowledge and expertise to our student programs and school leadership. I am pleased to welcome Nancy Taylor as the Vice Principal of Student Services and Andria Bengtson as the Vice Principal of Instruction. Ms. Taylor has been a Presentation faculty member for 16 years, most recently serving as the Counseling Department Chair. She is also a Presentation alum, mother of a graduate from the class of 2018, and a current parent. Andria Bengtson is returning to Presentation after four years in administration at Downtown College Prep in San Jose. Ms. Bengtson previously taught English at Presentation for seven years and served as the English Department Chair as well as the Assistant Admissions Director. They both are trained educators who bring expertise and passion to their new roles. I am excited to work closely with them to support your daughter and her education.

Letter from the President Dear Parents and Friends of Presentation, Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful summer with your family and managed to get some rest and relaxation. Before we officially begin, I wanted to catch you up on a few changes.

Our summer projects are completed thanks to our hard-working facilities and technology staff. Three classrooms (2, 3, 9) have been remodeled and Room 14 has been converted to an Apple Lab. Perhaps the most challenging project was the office swapping that occurred in preparation for our transition to the new President/Principal model of school governance.

Let me refresh your memory as to what that means to you practically.

Katherine Georgiev and I will be be sharing the executive duties at Presentation. (see attached chart) As Principal, she is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school; as has been true in the past, she delegates front line management to her Vice Principals of Academics, Student Services and Student Activities. Thus, all issues/concerns related to students will be handled in her office located off the main office. I have full faith and confidence in the leadership of Katherine and her team and trust you will enjoy working with them.

As President, I will focus on institutional planning, resource development, finance and facilities. I have moved to one of the houses Pres owns across the street and will be working very closely with the Advancement Office on implementing our master plan—which will be very exciting for the future of Presentation and greatly benefit and enhance the Pres experience for your daughters.

For the first time in forty years, I will not be a classroom teacher. Of all the changes, this is the one that is most emotionally challenging for me.

I have loved the day-to-day rapport with my students, and nothing can replace the magic of that interaction.

And while I will not be the “go-to-person” for issues related to your daughters, I will still remain the number one cheerleader for Pres Girls.

I will see you often at events, student activities, assemblies and meetings; I look forward to getting to know you in another role.

By Toni vonDohren | Parent Board Moderator I’d like to welcome everyone back! I hope you all had an amazing summer vacation, full of rest and a whole lot of family time. I’m extremely excited to introduce the executive members of the Parent Board.

Some of these activities are social, such as Mother-Daughter Mass and Pancake Breakfast or the annual Crab Feed and Dinner Dance. Some provide helpful information to the Presentation community’s such as the Principal’s State or the School Address and the Parent Connection Program. Most importantly, many of these activities raise funds for student scholarships and needed equipment. The board generally meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the library and all parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Thank you for all the years of support and encouragement you have given me, and I know you will be equally supportive of Katherine.

So, please be sure to keep your eyes right here on future editions of the Lantern for more information on upcoming activities, sign up to volunteer at future events and play an active role in your daughter’s high school experience. It’s surprisingly easy and super rewarding at the same time.

Key Dates in August Return to Regular Hours Monday, Aug. 6 Presentation will resume regular hours of 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. Please note that the school cannot be responsible for the safety or welfare of your daughters outside of these hours unless she is involved in an organized event such as athletics, dance or music. Please arrange carpools to accommodate these hours.

Frosh Orientation During this mandatory two-day orientation, freshmen leave their books at home and wear free dress.

Monday, Aug. 13, 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

(Check-in begins at 8 a.m.)

Students will visit their classrooms, find their lockers and--most importantly--meet their classmates! They will also be introduced to counseling services and student activities. Lunch is included.

As soon as students are dropped off in the morning, parents are invited to an informal, fun meet-and-greet in the library at 8:30 a.m. hosted by the Presentation Lantern League. Enjoy coffee and pastries as you get to know other incoming parents.

Tuesday, Aug. 14, 8 a.m. - 1:10 p.m.

(Check-in begins at 7:45 a.m.)

Students will learn about Campus Ministry, Community Involvement and homeroom, as well as how to use their iPads in preparation for classes. Students should bring a snack or plan to purchase one at school during the morning break.

Transfer Student Orientation Tuesday, Aug. 14, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

During this mandatory orientation, students leave their books at home and wear free dress.

Incoming Parent Meeting Tuesday, Aug. 14 All parents of new students must attend an orientation meeting at 6 p.m. in the Marian Stuckey Student Center. The meeting will conclude around 8:30 p.m. Appetizers and beverages will be provided.

First Day of School Wednesday, Aug. 15 Students should bring their schedules, iPads and books and report to their mentoring classrooms by 7:40 a.m.

Opening Liturgy Wednesday, Aug. 15 The opening liturgy will take place at 11:05 a.m. on the first day of school. Students must wear their formal uniforms. If you have not yet purchased the uniform, you may do so via the Merry Mart online store.

Student ID Photos Thursday, Aug. 16 and Friday, Aug. 17 ID photos will be taken during English classes. Students must wear their white Presentation High School polo shirts.

Back to School Night Wednesday, Aug. 22, 6:30 p.m.

Meet your daughter's teachers and learn about her classes.

Representatives from campus programs and departments will also be on hand to tell you about Campus Ministry, Athletics, the Math and Science Academy, Counseling and much more! Don't miss this fun and informative evening.

Advancement

This year, we are hosting our annual online auction in November and trying to make it bigger and better than ever! We need everyone’s help to make the auction a success so that we continue to allow Pres girls, both present and future to have the highest quality educational experience.

We are looking for the following donations: • Sports tickets ( Warriors, 49ers, Sharks, San Francisco Giants) • Vacation homes (timeshares, condos, town homes, hotel packages, beach or Tahoe homes) • Concert, theatre or other event tickets • Gift cards (all local businesses/restaurants, stores, movie theaters, etc.)

• Do you have a talent you’d like to share? (Gourmet cooking, sewing, carpentry art and design, etc) • Unique/exciting items and experiences We are also looking for donations to spruce up our some of our existing items. Some examples of items include: fine wines, home goods, spa packages, fine cigars, rare whiskey and bourbons, tech items and more!

Reminders & Updated School Policies Each year school policies are updated and revised. All school policies and procedures are contained in the Student/Parent Handbook that will be distributed to students the first several days of school. Below are some policy highlights that parents and students need to be aware of.

Formal Uniform Reminder Formal uniform must be worn for all liturgies, special occasions and events. The formal uniform consists of these three items: white PHS crest polo shirt, the PHS skirt and white socks. The navy blue PHS sweater may be worn over the white polo. Any other combination is not permitted.

An optional formal uniform item is the navy blue hooded jacket with gray school crest. This is the only jacket permitted to be worn during liturgies and formal assemblies. The gray, fleece jacket referenced in the winter uniform section is not permitted on formal uniform days.

Main Office Drop-Off Policy A student is expected to bring all necessary materials to school with her each day including textbooks, iPad, assignments, papers, projects, signed paperwork due, lunch, etc. These items may not be dropped off in the Main Office. Lunches, flowers, balloons, etc. will not be accepted in the Main Office and delivered to students.

School Hours The Presentation campus is open from 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. The main office is open from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily. The computer lab in Room 101 is open until 5 p.m. The library is open until 6 p.m. each day (beginning the first day of school) unless it is closed for an afternoon meeting. After 5 p.m., students should go to the library unless they are involved in a supervised after-school activity. All students should be picked up from campus no later than 6 p.m. if they are not directly involved in a schoolsponsored activity.

Morning Drop-Off and Afternoon Pick-Up Please be sensitive to our neighbors and other drivers. You should allow an additional 10 minutes for dropping off a student in the morning.

Please pay attention to Presentation staff members who direct the flow of traffic in the mornings and afternoons. To help ease traffic congestion, Presentation High School strongly encourages students to be dropped off and picked up from school behind the gym to alleviate traffic congestion on Plummer Avenue. Drop-off or pick-up of students in red zones, driveways or in the middle of the street is not permitted.

Anti-Bullying/Anti-Harassment Policy Pres has adopted a more extensive policy regarding bullying and harassment. Please be sure to review it in the Student-Parent Handbook when your daughter receives it in the fall.

Food Service Information Welcome to the Pasta Market hot lunch program for the 2018-2019 school year. At the beginning of the school year, parents are asked to pre-pay a certain dollar amount to allow the student to purchase her The Lantern | July/August 2018

daily meals. Each student will be issued her own personalized account.

The amount you pre-pay will depend entirely on how many days you believe your child will participate throughout the period. Suggested initial amounts are between $150-$200. The menu is a la carte which allows students to choose the menu items of their choice. Deposits/ funds must be paid using our new online service. With this new system you will log on and make your payments electronically. www.thepastamarket.net School code: PRES67 We will still accept cash at the hot lunch line (counter service).

However, we have found that establishing an account speeds the checkout process during lunch.

You will receive a statement from us on a monthly basis (via email) informing you of your child's account balance. This will give you the opportunity to recharge the account for an additional period. If your child spends more than her balance she will be allowed to purchase lunch only for that day. If the account continues to have a balance due, your child will not be allowed to purchase any further meals and will be turned away from the hot lunch line. In order to maintain the integrity of the program and to continue to offer the lowest costs possible, please actively monitor your monthly statement and account balance.

Any money owed from the 2017-2018 school year must be paid before participation in this year's program will be allowed.

We have established a 24-hour message hotline for any questions and comments (650) 949-3239. We also have a hot lunch coordinator who is happy to address any questions you may have at hotlunch@pastamarket.com.

Attendance Reminders With the new school year fast approaching, here are some important reminders about our attendance policies: • If your daughter is not coming to school or will arrive late, please call the Attendance Office at (408) 266-1060 no later than 9 a.m.

For safety reasons, it is very important for us to hear from you no late than 9 a.m.

• All absences require a written note signed by a parent the day your daughter returns to school. Faxes and emails are not accepted.

Your daughter is considered absent if she arrives after 8 a.m. and will need a parent note (unless she has a free period).

• In the rare instance when your daughter needs to leave school early for an appointment, send her to the Attendance Office before school with a note from you stating the reason she needs to leave school and the time of the dismissal. She will be given an early dismissal notice and will be able to leave class at that designated time.

• Your daughter may carry in her backpack the following items: Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, Midol, Tums, and throat lozenges. If she requires prescription medication, the Attendance Office needs to be informed if she carries the medicine in her backpack.

• If your daughter is sick at school, she must go to the Attendance Office. Ms. Fuqua will call her parents when necessary. We thank you for complying with our policies. • Dropping off or picking up students in the school driveways.

• Moving neighbors’ trash cans or driving over or parking on lawn clippings.

• Jaywalking students must use the crosswalk.

• Blocking any portion of the street when cars pull up to the curb in the front of school. Back end of car may not be sticking out into the street disrupting the flow of traffic.

Traffic Control Guidelines Cars are encouraged to drive to the back of campus behind the gym to drop off and pick up students. Cars are also allowed to pull into the loading zones in the front of the school. During morning drop off and afternoon pick up driveways are one-way only. The north driveway is entrance only and the south driveway is the exit.

Parent and Volunteer Policy Parents must be fingerprinted to serve in most on-campus volunteer roles. The Verify Group will be on campus on the following dates to fingerprint parents:

• If you are parking on the street, check to see if you are parking safely, correctly and legally. Pay attention to red zones and hydrants.

• Be courteous to our neighbors at all times.

• Move your car if requested to do so.

• Report any collisions or damaged vehicles to the main office. If you cannot locate the owner of the other vehicle, leave a note with your name, phone and insurance information.

• Practice safe, slow and courteous driving at all times.

Drop-Off/Parking Don'ts: • Don't move garbage cans or park/drive over grass clippings.

• No left turns can be made from Plummer Ave. onto Jenvey Ave. during drop-off or pick-up.

• Don't talk on your cell phone or text while driving. It is illegal.

• Don't litter.

• Don't engage in arguments with our neighbors for any reason.

• Stopping, parking, dropping off or pick up students in red zones.

• Students parking in the loading zones in front of the Advancement and Jenvey houses before 7:40 am. This disrupts the flow of morning drop off.

• Dropping off or picking up students in the middle of any street in the neighborhood.

• Blocking the crosswalk or any driveways.

• Pulling into neighbors driveways to drop off, pick up, or to turn around.

• Pulling into or parking in faculty numbered parking spots.

Tuesday, Aug. 14, 7:30-9 a.m., Reception Room (at the beginning of Frosh Orientation) Monday, Aug. 20, 5-6:15 p.m., Reception Room (before the Fall Sports Parent Meeting) The cost is $67 and can be paid by cash, check or credit. Unfortunately, fingerprinting is non-transferable between schools, so all parents must be fingerprinted at Presentation (even if they have already been fingerprinted by their elementary or middle schools). Parents only need to be fingerprinted once during their four years at Presentation.

Donors in Plaid Class Dues

For the fourth year in a row, Presentation is continuing its Donors in Plaid program. Each student is asked to turn in $20 to their homerooms

by Monday, Aug. 22. These class dues accumulate into a fund to be used for class activities and for a senior gift for the school. Each senior class has two options for the senior gift: partially funding a student on financial aid for the following school year or supporting the non-tuition scholarship fund. What better way to give back then to give directly to one of their sisters in plaid? All those who pay class dues on time will receive free dress on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Donors in Plaid replaced class level candy sale fundraisers. Students will participate in the annual Magazine Drive, Holiday Drives for Sacred Heart Community Service and the Mission Drive for the Sisters of the Presentation. Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry offers a variety of class level retreats throughout the year for students to deepen their faith and to bond with one another in community. Mark your family’s calendar for your daughter’s class level retreat! Registration and permission forms have been mailed home. During retreat, students participate in group discussions, listen to talks from students and faculty about their faith journey, and enjoy community-building activities, with plenty of free time to reflect and relax. All retreats are open to—and enriched by—students of all faith traditions.

Retreat reservations will be accepted in the order they are received.

Our retreats are popular and space is limited. Please register early to reserve a spot.

Retreat Calendar Freshmen: Monday, March 4: This is a mandatory retreat day for the entire class of 2022. The sessions focus on community building, prayerful reflection, small and large group discussions, and an opportunity for the freshmen to get to know one another and to create lasting friendships. More information and a permission form will emailed in September.

Sophomores: Thursday, Nov. 29 or Tuesday, Jan. 22: Your daughter will get an opportunity to take some time out from her busy schedule to reflect on the important relationships in her life and how patience, understanding and forgiveness can strengthen those ties.

Juniors: October 25-26 or April 29-30: Your daughter will not want to miss this opportunity to attend her first overnight retreat. Juniors will have a chance to reflect on the importance of finding the sacred in their everyday lives. They will experience a variety of prayer styles and reflect on retreat talks led by senior peer ministers on the topics of prayer, faith, integrity and service. Students will spend time participating in small and large group discussions, community building activities and given plenty of free time to reflect and relax.

Seniors: February 7-8 or March 14-15: Your daughter will treasure the memories she creates on her final retreat with her graduating class.

During this retreat, seniors will have a chance to reflect on how God is calling them in their present lives as well as how they will respond to that call. Faculty members share personal experiences to help students to understand the concept of God’s call, how God calls them through various people in their lives, how to discern God’s call, and how to respond to God’s call, especially in times of challenge.

College Counseling

The beginning of a new and exciting school year has arrived. The month of August can be incredibly busy, with new classes, teachers, and schedules to adjust to, as well as the start of the college application process for seniors.

Beginning in August, we will offer mandatory collaboration periods and individual meetings for seniors.

The individual meetings will cover a variety of topics including: • Verification of “First Five” college list • Confirmation of planned standardized testing dates (if applicable) • College Essay and Supplemental Essay brainstorm and proofing • Creation of personal deadlines and timeline for college and financial aid applications • Identification of teachers for letters of recommendation Communication will be essential as you progress through the fall application season. We recommend you and your daughter plan weekly family conversations regarding her progress. We find these weekly meetings promote open and positive communication while cutting down on tension and stress, making the application process a more enjoyable rite of passage.

The College Counseling Department is here to support your family’s application process and is also excited to introduce you to our new Director of College Counseling, Ms. Anya Ishida. Ms. Ishida joins us after several years as a Guidance and College Counselor, as well as College and Career Coordinator at St. Francis High School. Prior to this role, she served as the only College and Career Counselor at Moanaluna High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. As Ms. Ishida states, “Each student has a unique story that is revealed through the college process. I am blessed to guide students through such a transformational time in their lives. I cherish face-time with my students, love editing college essays, and meeting families, all in an effort to discover each student's distinctive qualities and strengths. I learn something new and fascinating about my students each day.” We look forward to each of you having an opportunity to meet Ms. Ishida, who will be assuming Mrs. MaryLynne Rodriguez’s caseload.

Community Involvement

Community Involvement will be kicking off the school year with our annual Service Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 5! Over 30 non-profit organizations will be on campus to share their service opportunities with our students. From working on bikes, to serving meals, educating children, to playing with animals, or working on crafts with disabled youth, there is something for everyone. Last year our students served over 5,500 hours in the community and made a huge impact on the organizations they worked with and the people they served. We hope students continue to feel inspired to get involved and find organizations at the service fair that match their passions.

Athletics

Welcome back, Panthers! I hope you had a wonderful summer! Some of our fall sports begin their season on Friday, Aug. 3; make sure to check the athletics homepage for the fall tryout information. All student-athletes who want to try out for an athletic team must complete and turn in the athletic participation packet (the sports physical form and the online forms) to the Athletic department before they can tryout.

The Panther’s Den will be open once again this school year so you can shop for your PantherWear right on campus! The Panther’s Den store is located in the Gym Foyer. We’re selling a lot of great gear and merchandise…make sure to check it out! Check the Athletic Booster’s website for more information or email the Panther’s Den store manager with questions at boosterpreswear@presentationhs.org.

Lastly, make sure your calendar is marked for the Athletic fundraiser on Saturday, March 16. The 5th Annual Game of Throws is sure to be a fun night and I hope to see you there! Be on the lookout for information about the Athletic fundraiser in the coming months. Go Panthers!

Dance

Welcome back to school! The Presentation Dance Company is so excited to announce our new classes for the 2018-2019 school year.

Dance Company is a place for all interested in dancing at Presentation.

Whether you have been dancing for years or are interested in taking your very first class, we have a class for you. We offer classes in jazz, ballet, hip hop and tap. These classes meet once a week for the entire school year. If you are interested in our Dance Company, this is our non-audition, non-competition dance team that is available for all levels of dancers. The Company performs at various school performance and is a place for students to choreograph and perform their own choreography. If you are interested in being apart of the Company you must also take a ballet and jazz class. Registration packets can be picked up from the dance studio. Paperwork is due

Performing Arts

Announcing our Valenzuela Theater Schedule!

We have an exciting theater season planned for this coming school year.

Opening Saturday, Nov. 3 is The Music Man. This golden-age classic is set in Iowa in 1912 and concerns the antics of a salesman who arrives to sell the town a boy’s and girl’s band. The audition workshop for this production is Monday, Aug. 20, where students can learn the basics of the audition process here at Pres. Auditions are August 22-24. All students, including new freshman, are invited to audition for all shows, and if you know any high-school-aged boys who might be interested, please spread the word to them!

Winter Musical: Once on This Island Our winter musical, Once on this Island, opens on Saturday, Jan. 19.

Based loosely on The Little Mermaid, and currently enjoying a successful revival on Broadway, this musical is about a girl who falls in love with someone from a different social class on a tropical island and must prove that love is the strongest force on earth. The audition workshop for this show is Monday, Nov. 5 and auditions are November 13-14.

Spring Play: Hamlet Our spring play is Shakespeare’s Hamlet, which will open Saturday, March 16. The audition workshop is Wednesday, Jan. 16 and auditions are January 22-23. I.T.S. Our drama club, The International Thespian Society (I.T.S.), will hold its first meeting in August. Freshman who have an interest in performing or in technical theater should not miss this first meeting, where we will be discussing our student-directed productions, including our benefit concert in October, as well as some original productions that will be totally student-created.
