Medical Services Prescott College is pleased to partner with Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) to provide medical services to our students. The Family Medicine office at 1050 Gail Gardner Way is the designated service provider for Prescott College students. There are four board certified physicians committed to compassionate, quality, evidence-based medicine, and ready to serve. Appointments are available on the same or next day of the student's call for service. Co-pays and deductibles are based on student's insurance plans. For information about making a first appointment, please contact the Student Life Office at (928) 350-1005 or studentlife@prescott.edu for required forms. After the initial appointment, all patient contact will be directly with the Family Medicine office.

New Book Features Prescott College The University Press of Kentucky is pleased to announce the release of Fields of Learning: The Student Farm Movement in North America, edited

by Laura Sayre and Sean Clark. The book provides case studies of the 15 most influential student farms through North America to give a history of the movement and provide lessons that each farm can teach the broader agricultural and educational communities. Life is a River

A Most Interesting College The Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012 listed several environmentally-focused colleges including Prescott College. The Huffpost College column saw fit to pull out the top thirteen from the book it found most interesting – and we’re one of them!

Back in October of last year Admissions had a professional videographer (also father of a student) on campus filming. We asked him to create a video that would help prospective students and families learn more about the College, not just facts and figures like most college videos, but one that would communicate the more ethereal aspects of what happens here at Prescott College. We wanted the film to leave viewers smiling, feeling inspired, and help them make an informed decision about going forward with the College. We believe he accomplished that.

Faculty News Education Faculty, Anita E. Fernรกndez, Ph.D., announces La Tierra Community School is opening as a charter school on August 8th (we're affiliated with PC and the only Expeditionary Learning elementary school in the tri-city area). All three of our classroom teachers and our director are alumni of Prescott College! Environmental Studies faculty member Tom Fleischner's new book, "The Way of Natural History" is now available. It's an anthology, and includes alumni and former faculty among its 22 contributors including: Wren Farris '00, Cristina Eisenberg M.A. '06, former faculty member Laura Sewall, and faculty member Ed Grumbine. K. L. (Kenny) Cook, Arts & Letters Faculty Member, published three stories - "Filament" (in One Story), "Love Song for the Quarantined" (The Louisville Review), and "Relative Peace" (Prairie Schooner) - in spring and summer 2011. His story, "Bonnie and Clyde in the Backyard," won the 2011 Spur Award for Best Short Story from the Western Writers of America and will also be published in the Best of the West 2011 anthology in September. His full collection of stories, Love Songs for the Quarantined, which won the 2010 Spokane Prize for Short Fiction, will also be published in September.

On Thursday, June 30, 2011, faculty, staff, students, friends of the College, neighbors, and community leaders gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of Prescott College’s new student housing. Campus tours and refreshments were available at the Garvey Welcome Center along with a drum procession to the housing site, speeches by Prescott College President Kristin R. Woolever, Trustee and alumnus Richard Ach, and Prescott's Mayor Marlin Kuykendall.

“It’s a win-win situation for all involved,” says Jack Herring, Dean of On-Campus Undergraduate Programs at Prescott College. He explains that the school has seen a shift in the on-campus student body over the past 10 years. “More and more of our students are first-time college students coming to us straight from home. There’s a need for a lot of transitional support as these young people start their journey into adulthood. The housing is an integral and tangible piece of that support system.”

Research demonstrates that new students who live in college housing are often more successful in completing their studies. Additionally, revenue generated from housing fees will feed directly back into the College’s operational budget, providing added financial stability and the foundation for further institutional development – expanded curricular offerings, added student support staff, and further renovations and improvements to the campus.

In close consult with architect Phil Weddle of Weddle Gilmore Architects, Haley Construction Co. of Prescott will build the 104-bed facility, situated on the western end of the campus in an area bounded by Willow, Garden, and Sheldon Streets and Western Avenue, to U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold certification requirements.

The selection of Haley Construction demonstrates a “huge commitment to a Prescott business and to the community of Prescott,” says Prescott College President Dr. Kristin Woolever. “Additionally, with plans to employ practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations, and maintenance solutions, we’re walking our talk about the environment and sustainability.”

With construction scheduled to be completed by June 2012, the incoming class of freshman for the following fall term can expect homes that boast passive solar design, solar photovoltaic technology, and EnergyStar appliances and high-efficiency lighting fixtures, all of which mean the buildings will generate 100 percent of their own power and still contribute energy back into the grid.

Living “water conscious” in an arid desert state is built in for students with the use of low-flow water fixtures, rainwater catchment and storage for irrigation of landscaping, and expanded parking for cars and bicycles designed for water infiltration.

And that’s just the beginning. According to James Pittman, Director of Sustainability for Prescott College, “The school has a keen interest in developing policies for future construction and renovation that go beyond LEED certification in order to validate values and methods unique to the College’s culture and bioregional identity.”

Keeping in Touch Sending Mail Every On Campus Undergraduate Student currently enrolled at Prescott College is issued a student mailbox. Student mailboxes are housed within the Service Center, which is located on the first floor of the San Juan Building (Prescott Campus). Student mail and packages are distributed to student mailboxes throughout the course of the day. Students can check their student mailboxes Monday – Friday anytime between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For your student’s protection a valid photo id is required for all mail and package pickups (no exceptions). Valid forms of photo ID include: Prescott College Student ID, Passport, or State Issued Driver’s License/Identification Card. Welcome from the On-Campus Undergraduate Admissions Office

In just a few weeks, Prescott College will welcome students back to campus! Preparing to move and start classes is always time consuming and usually comes with some anxiety. Luckily, securing housing here in Prescott doesn’t have to be difficult or overwhelming. Residential Life Coordinator, Jessica Truscott is available to help students seeking off-campus housing by offering several resources and help every step along the way. Once housing is secured, Prescott College offers a Guarantor’s Agreement assuring that the College stands behind the student and that the students’ obligation will be met.

Additionally, this agreement secures Jessica as mediator should an off-campus student need help working with a landlord or roommates. For students who have been unable to obtain housing, a Housing Fair is scheduled for Tuesday, August 23 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Crossroad Community room. Here, students will be able to meet people who have space for rent. So, if you’re a student still needing housing or if you have a space to fill, contact Jessica for more information. Students are highly encouraged to secure housing before leaving for orientation in the field.
