ecause of your generosity, PVM Foundation established the COVID-19 Staff Emergency Help Fund in early March. You – the caring donor – gave, and gave again. You supported 165 PVM staff members facing financial challenges as a result of COVID-19. THANK YOU, DONORS! Dena King, a Village of East Harbor Certified Nurse Assistant, shares her COVID-19 story. She did this because she wants each donor to know how much their generosity means to her and her two young children.

Dena is just one of the 165 PVM staff members helped by your generous donations.

Nervous, scared, and alone. That was the common thread that Dena faced early on caring for nursing home residents. “The virus shut things down. No visitors, no walks outside, the residents were so alone,” Dena reflects. She was their human contact. “I would tell them we’re

going to get through this together. I would just be there for them. Push them to the window to see a glimpse of the outdoors, play cards and help them video chat with their family,” said Dena with a tear in her eye.

On April 6, the virus hit home. Dena became ill with a 101-degree fever and extremely bad coughing attacks. “I felt like I was hit by a truck.

Every muscle hurt. I could not even make a fist,” Dena said. That led to being off from work for over three weeks.

Dena is a single mother raising two young children.

Her children had to go live with her mother. Dena was left to recover by herself. Nervous, scared, and alone was her reality, just like the residents.

Fortunately Dena recovered. However, three weeks without work drained her time off and, to make matters worse her food assistance was taken away.

“ I would tell [my residents] we’re going to get through this together. I would just be there for them.”

Your donations to the COVID-19 Staff Emergency Help Fund were the lifeline Dena needed. “The first thing I did was head over to Sam’s Club for food. It was not an easy time financially. The money really helped, thank you so much donors, you’re such a blessing,” proclaims Dena.

Dena’s situation is not unique. Each day committed, compassionate and brave frontline staff members work to serve frail older adults.

They offer so much love and care, especially during times of quarantine. Dena, like others, faced personal challenges with family care, finances and overall health. 165 frontline caregivers just like Dena were given muchneeded assistance because you cared enough to give, and give again.

COVID-19 changed everything. PVM has two conference rooms at its home office. One of them is now a PPE supply room. Filled from top to bottom with gloves, masks, gowns, and cleaning supplies.

You, the donor, saved the day! Your timely donations to the PVM COVID-19 Emergency Fund were spent on these lifesaving supplies.

With PPE in hand, all were able to maintain adherence to safety protocols and decrease the chance of COVID exposures for residents and frontline staff. Your donation saved a life! Thank you for deciding to donate.

As you can see from the photos, relationships were forged and PPE was purchased in time to maintain needed levels.

The need for PPE was in such high demand that the scope of Andy Kraft’s, Director of Maintenance Operations for PVM, job responsibilities drastically shifted. “PVM went from using 600 masks/gowns per month to using 6,000 masks/ gowns per week. Keeping residents and staff safe is paramount,” Andy says.

Developing new methods to limit the exposure of harmful viruses is the new reality post-COVID-19 for all senior care organizations. All this comes with a hefty price tag. PVM projects $300,000 annually for the heightened precautions needed.

Finding PPE was no small chore. “Most of the PPE in the early stages was going to the hospitals. PVM had to develop new vendor

The COVID-19 Emergency Fund was created to help get critical Personal Protective Equipment to frontline PVM staff and residents. Donations sustain distribution, supply and infrastructure efforts. Funds directly support PVM Villages.

These historically unexpected needs were not in PVM’s operational budgets.

Here’s what your donations can do: $25 will provide 5 face shields – face shields are reusable and produce less waste.

Because of COVID-19, PVM jumped from using 600 masks/gowns per month to using 6,000 masks/gowns per week.

$50 will provide cleaning materials

LEAVING A LEGACY

A SIMPLE ASK Connects Randall & Susan Miller to PVM

A

conversation after church about PVM was life-changing. Here’s how Randall and Susan Miller developed a deep affection for the PVM Mission, and why they decided to leave PVM in their will.

“I did not have any connection to PVM. We were new in town,” Susan recalls. “After church, current PVM Board Member, Wes Pelling, leaned over the pew and asked if I was interested in serving on the newly forming Village of Redford Board. I answered, ‘why not?’”

Any bequest, large or small, can make a difference. Won’t you join the Millers in making a difference?

That simple ask led to Susan Miller serving for many years as a PVM Board Member, including two years leading the organization as PVM Corporate Board Chair. “When I started, PVM had five Villages and now we have so many, I think I have lost count! I am amazed. Very proud,” Susan proclaims.

Randall and Susan made the easy decision to leave a bequest in their will to PVM. Bequest donors like the Millers helped PVM serve seniors for 75 years, and ensure that PVM is around for another 75 years.

“I believe in PVM and love what PVM does. This is why leaving a bequest to PVM made so much sense,” says Susan.

PVM would not be able to serve over 5,000 older adults without kind people like Randall and Susan Miller. Their bequest offers a brighter tomorrow for older adults.

I hope by the time you read this, some normalcy is restored. Maybe the Lions will be playing, but who knows.
