Life experience and a little competition inspired Margo Imes to write
Wichita Presbyterian Manor receives 2019 customer experience award from Pinnacle Quality Insight
It all started in 1998 when Westerly resident Margo Imes attended a Baxter Black show. There was a poet that opened up for Baxter and Margo thought to herself, “I can write better than that.” So, she did. Margo wrote poetry for years and decided to try cowboy poetry since she had 16 years of experience with horses, cows and farm work. The first poem she wrote, she shared with friends and everybody wanted a copy. She has even had her work published in a poetry book called “The Big Roundup.” Besides proving to herself that she was more talented than that opening act at the Baxter Black show years ago, Margo enjoys writing cowboy poetry because it is therapeutic to her. The cowboy way of life is also something she and her husband, Vern, have shared for 22 years. It wasn’t until the two attended a whistle dance that they met. The dance requires you to dance with your partner for about 15 seconds and when the whistle blows you switch partners. The theme event encouraged dancers to dress like their favorite athlete. Margo’s favorite athlete was a barrel racer, so she dressed up as a cowgirl. As the two danced, Vern asked her if she was a real cowgirl and Margo responded, “yes!” IMES - continued on page 2

The Customer Experience Award is given to senior living communities that score in the top 15-percent of the nation in resident satisfaction surveys conducted by Pinnacle Quality Insight for 12 consecutive months. Wichita Presbyterian Manor received the award in skilled nursing. Over the course of 2018, a sampling of Presbyterian Manor’s residents and their families participated in monthly telephone interviews that include open-ended questions, as well the opportunity to rate Presbyterian Manor in AWARD - continued on page 3

For several years, the two of them were part of the Mounted Sheriff ’s Posse where they patrolled parades, Riverfest, zoo day and crowd control at large events. They rode their own horses and carried their own guns, since the organization was volunteer with only the uniforms provided. Vern and Margo have lived at Westerly since January 2018, where they enjoy the people, communication and companionship with fellow residents. If you’re interested in reading

Joyce Carr’s PATH to success Following a brief stay in the hospital, Leota “Joyce” Carr chose Wichita Presbyterian Manor’s PATH® (Post Acute to Home) program for her short-term rehabilitation. She heard numerous recommendations from friends and family who had loved ones who received exemplary care at the community. Their endorsements aided her decision-making, as well as the location, with the community being only eight minutes from her home. Then when one of her physicians, Dr. Mohammed, also recommended Wichita Presbyterian Manor, her mind was made up. A week before her scheduled surgery, Joyce and her granddaughter toured the community. They were impressed by the size of the room and the overall cleanliness of the campus. After her rehabilitation stay, when asked about her experience at Presbyterian Manor, she praised the care she received from the therapy staff.
She was initially concerned about whether they would be able to manage the pain behind her knee, but found the staff to be professional, friendly and experienced in their care. In addition to the care, she also was impressed by the education they provided when she was discharged home, which was instrumental in ensuring her success going home. Joyce was excited to return home, play with her grandkids and resume her Bible study.

Health and wellness adds Brain Fitness class Living well and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle is a vital focus for Wichita Presbyterian Manor and many of our residents. As part of our new wellness program, Carol Gibbon, health and wellness director, added a “Brain Fitness” class. This class offers tactics and brain exercises that stretch and increase brain muscles at a fun, engaging and social gettogether. Handouts are provided, but discussions and individual and group work are incorporated. Brain exercises are important to promote brain function and keep synapses firing and the mind sharp and alert. Our residents are finding this class to be fun and beneficial, and the number of people coming increases each week! To learn more about the
