Managing Dementia: A Science & An Art Caring for someone with age-related dementia like Alzheimer’s disease can be isolating, overwhelming and emotionally devastating.

Nurse practitioner Susan Scanland understands: She’s worked with older adults, their families and professionals at long-term care communities for nearly 30 years.

Susan will be our special guest Jan. 20 to talk about “Managing Dementia: A Science & An Art.” The event will be at 2 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel at Eisenhower National Airport.

Emerald Awards

Susan has devoted her career to working with people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

She has written textbook chapters, professional journal articles and online courses, and has presented at numerous national aging conferences.

She also publishes a monthly e-newsletter on Alzheimer’s and other dementias, distributed to nearly 10,000 health care providers.

Wichita Presbyterian Manor honored for achievements Wichita Presbyterian Manor received a certificate of recognition from Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America for reaching goals in fiscal year 2015, July 1, 2014, through June 30, 2015.

The recognition came through PMMA’s new Emerald Awards Program, designed to encourage its 18 locations to achieve high levels of resident and employee satisfaction, meet financial goals, build philanthropic support for the organization’s mission and meet marketing goals. There are 11 areas measured for the Emerald Awards.

To receive an emerald, a community has to meet its goals in all 11 areas.

Certificates of recognition were given out to communities that reached their goals in one or more category.

Executive chef joins Wichita team Dany joined the Wichita Presbyterian Manor team in October 2015 as executive chef. As a chef, he is committed to producing the highest quality food and food presentation. A native of Lebanon, he has more than 15 years of mastery in the culinary arts. He is trained in pastry arts as well as culinary arts. He also trained at Republic Hotel Management of Rome. He worked at Maronite Catholic Institute in Rome, Italy, the Intercontinental Hotel in Asmara Eritrea and Doha, Qatar, before becoming the Lebanese Cuisine executive chef at Cedar Grill Restaurant. He has worked at Ali Baba, The Palms and The Daily Egg Restaurant in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Zentangle benefits people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia At the annual Alzheimer’s Conference luncheon in November, guests were invited to draw right on their placemats. Wichita artist Bonnie Pewterbaugh created the interactive mats with a design and directions for creating a Zentangle.

Bonnie is a certified teacher of Zentangle, a popular new art form that holds special appeal for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Simpler than it looks, Zentangle uses repetitive patterns to form intricate geometric designs. It is said to promote relaxation, mindfulness and stress relief.

“Even for people who feel they are not creative, once they learn the method, they realize how simple it is,” Bonnie said. “It really brings a great amount of self-satisfaction.”

A chance meeting with Amy Watson, life enrichment director at Wichita Presbyterian Manor, led to Bonnie’s creation of the placemat.

Newton Presbyterian Manor and Wichita Presbyterian Manor sponsored the luncheon at the conference, and a mutual friend suggested that Bonnie develop a Zentangle piece for the event.

“I hoped it would be used at the table to start conversations,” Bonnie said.

Newton Presbyterian Manor and Wichita Presbyterian Manor sponsored the luncheon at the annual Alzheimer’s Conference in Wichita. The placemats at lunch, provided by the Newton and Wichita Presbyterian Manor campuses, featured a Zentangle design, an art form that appeals to those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Attendees were encouraged to try their hand at drawing their own Zentagle.

Bonnie comes from a family of artists, but she said her tastes usually ran to arts and crafts. She discovered a Zentangle website about five years ago and ordered a drawing kit. In 2011, she earned her certification and is now one of five certified Zentangle teachers in Kansas.

“I created some pieces and put them in one of the galleries downtown, and they sold,” she said. “I thought, that’s it, I want to share this with people.”
