Director of nursing feels at home at Topeka Presbyterian Manor Jodi Broxterman’s decision to join the staff of Topeka Presbyterian Manor came down to a feeling. “Presbyterian Manor just felt homey when I came here for my interview,” said Jodi, who serves as the health care director of nursing. She joined the staff last May. Jodi has spent most of her 23-year career in long-term care. She was a CNA in high school before becoming a CMA. She earned LPN status at the age of 24, but did not pursue her RN until she was in her early forties. Despite the challenge of balancing work, family and classes, she was inspired to return to school because she “wanted to do more” and thought she might enjoy an administrative role. Topeka Presbyterian Manor’s Art is Ageless® call for entries underway Topeka Presbyterian Manor has issued a call for entries for the Art is Ageless® juried exhibit to be held April 6 – 9, 2020. Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 40th anniversary Art is Ageless calendar in 2021. Artists may choose to enter the exhibit only. For the competition, works are to have been completed in the past five years (since January 2015). There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional. Works to be entered for judging need to be at AIA - continued on page 2

advanced from charge nurse to assistant director of nursing to director of nursing, a position she first achieved three years ago. Jodi lives in Sabetha with her husband and 13-year-old son. She has two adult daughters, one of whom is married and lives in Lincoln, Neb. The other is a student at K-State studying elementary education. Her son plays basketball and football, which keeps the whole family busy. Jodi enjoys sewing and crafting in her spare time. She took up quilting 10 years ago after taking a class. A lengthy commute means Jodi spends two hours driving each work day. She copes by listening to audiobooks in the car. She likes fiction of all kinds, but suspense novels in particular.

“I don’t like to be bored,” Jodi said. We’re thrilled to have Jodi as part of our dedicated and qualified staff. The World Health Organization designated 2020 as “the year of the nurse.” This observation coincides with the 200th birth anniversary of revolutionary nurse Florence
events, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year. Local competition winners will join winners from 15 other PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica) communities to be judged at the systemwide level.

Topeka Presbyterian Manor celebrates Christmas in style Thanks to a dedicated “Christmas team,” Topeka Presbyterian Manor kicked off the holiday season in fine fashion. The dining staff prepared delicious appetizers and delectable desserts for employees, residents and their staff to enjoy.
“My brothers and I all enjoyed this year’s Christmas event,” a resident’s family member wrote on Facebook. “The food was amazing!! Kudos to the chef and food prep team. Best (Christmas party) yet.” “It is a blessing to celebrate this beautiful season with residents,
families and staff,” said Heather Pilkinton, executive director at the Manor.
Many thanks to the staff members who worked to make this year’s Christmas party a success, and to all the residents and family members who celebrated with us. ◆
