Celebrating Art is Ageless®

With more than 20 entries in our Art is Ageless® display and juried competition, the chapel was full of many colorful and exquisite projects. The entries included quilts, sculptures, paintings, drawings and other hand crafted clothing. Kansas born artist, JoAnna Trezise, used her artistic background to help set up the exhibit this year. JoAnna is a former employee of Presbyterian Manor, having served in multiple positions including medication aide, activity

director and most recently social services director. She graduated from Sterling College with an art degree.

The exhibit was set up with a “People’s Choice” voting table and Resident Council President, Charlie Seidl, voted for the “pretty, cozy looking quilts.” My personal favorite was the drawing of Thomas Edison by Robert Enders because it is drawn beautifully and has a sense of sophistication. All of the pieces were amazing. The following pieces took home winning prizes.

Furry, Feathered and Finned Friends

2 parakeets find their home near the east side of the dining hall.

Many different animals surround the residents living at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. A fish tank, which contains around eight assorted fish, is located in the main lobby. The lobby is a great place for this tank since many of the residents like to sit and enjoy watching the fish swim around. The residents have all named each fish something different.

However most residents agree on the name of the biggest fish in the tank, a goldfish, named, “Moby Dick.”

When walking into the dining hall from the east side of the building, the residents pass a cage that holds two parakeets, a blue and a green one.

Where the cage is placed is perfect for the residents; they can be seen and heard all hours of the day. Similar to the fish, the birds have a different name depending on who you are speaking to. The two common names for the blue bird are “Blue” and “Sky.” The common two name for the green one are “Goldie” and “Forest.”

Residents love to wander outside to

enjoy the fresh air and the animals that live out there. From the butterflies and the ladybugs, to the wild birds, even the squirrels. The squirrels bring tremendous joy to the residents as they get to sit outside and watch them frolic around the lawn. Corn and peanuts are bought by the barrel to feed these squirrels, along with barrels of bird seed since some residents request to have a squirrel and/or bird feeder placed outside their window so they can watch them up close.

Sweet Memories of Easter

Easter Sunday comes every year, falling on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the official vernal

equinox. Here at the Presbyterian Manor we have some Easter traditions that we live by, and this year was no different. Every year we hold an annual Easter egg hunt for our staff and residents. More than 500 eggs were spaced out and hidden around the building for the residents, staff and their families to find!

with all things Easter. Baskets were filled with colorful bunnies, flowers and eggs adding pastel colors to (almost) every inch of the interior décor.

The residents and staff have some memories and traditions of their own they’ve shared with us. One of our residents, Maurice Reed said, “I didn’t have many traditions during Easter, but Mom always said we had to dress in our nicest clothes to go to church for the 4 COMMUNITY MATTERS MAY 2016

Easter service. When I got older with kids of my own, my wife had our kids go to the Sterling College community egg hunt each year. Oh, and we would always eat a real good ham.”

Kari Wheeler, our administrative services accounting assistant, had many traditions and memories from when she was growing up. “My mom always made hot-cross buns for Easter, which was the only time she ever made them and they were delicious!”
