James 5:13-14 NIV Our cruise to Alaska in August was truly a “mountain-top” experience for Kenny and me. We experienced breath-taking scenery, had the opportunity to visit new places and learn about other cultures with very different ways of living. Our days were filled with lattes, beer and wine while we relaxed at the Crow’s Nest on the observation deck. We ate our way through the many restaurants on board the ship and on land. We came home relaxed and renewed and several pounds heavier.

On a new PATH®

Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America (PMMA) as a system has been providing senior care and services for more than 70 years across Kansas and Missouri (and coming soon to Colorado).

As a part of the service to seniors, PMMA has always offered care after hospitalizations through skilled nursing and physical, occupational and speech therapies with the objective of supporting a return to prior levels of independence and overall health.

In 2012, PMMA launched a program called PATH® or “Post-Acute-toHome” to strengthen service to older adults. This program serves patients PATH - continued on page 2

Then life happened. At the airport, TVs were filled with news coverage of the shootings in El Paseo and Dayton. Two days later, I was involved in a car accident that was a “deep-valley experience.” Our great-grandson moved to Houston for the school year a few days later, which left a sadness in my heart and a heaviness in my soul. My home church in Russell holds a healing service every Monday. One Monday night, there was a special service for one of my best friends who is currently undergoing chemo and radiation for Stage IV cancer.

By incorporating the PMMA team of medical professionals to develop individualized programs, PATH helps patients regain functionality and promotes a safe return to their home.

Scripture is full of stories of civilizations appeals for healing and comfort and God’s response to them. Healing comes in many forms including physical, mental, emotional and spiritually. A healing service doesn’t guarantee a cure. I believe they can, but they also calm our hearts and bring us peace.

This month I am going to begin a monthly Service of Healing in the Chapel. They will be the first Wednesday of each month with the first one being October 2, at 2 p.m. for all those wishing to take part in a community service. At 2:30 p.m., I will be in the Chapel for any individuals who prefer a more private service. My hope is that these services will give us a time to focus on God whose will for each of us is wholeness, peace, comfort and hope in our lives.

PATH sets the standard with team members who are committed to making the admissions process more efficient and features prompt admissions decisions, extended admission hours, continual communication with physicians and families, proactive planning and post-discharge follow-up, and a comfortable home-like setting.

Recently, PMMA introduced an enhancement to the PATH program called “I Took the PATH to…” supporting our commitment to patient goals. Through a partnership with Aegis Therapies, patients set unique goals upon admission to PATH. These goals are discussed throughout the PATH stay as a way to motivate and honor progress.

Christina Golladay-Bauer - September employee of the month Congratulations to Christina Golladay-Bauer, Employee of the Month for September. Christina has worked for Salina Presbyterian Manor for more than nine years as a registered nurse.

She has been an RN since 2005 and prior to that worked as a CNA, then CMA, Home Health Aide, then LPN. Christina is married to Billy and together they have three children;

Nicole, Mekenzie and Lilly.

In her spare time, Christina likes camping, fishing, softball, baseball and hunting.

When asked what most people would not know about her, she said that she played softball and baseball all the way until she was in college.

Christina is very close to having her BSN and plans to complete this in years to come. ◆

Employee scholarship provides Goetz with the motivation needed to further her education When Director of Nursing Stephanie Goetz earned her associate degree in nursing (ADN), it was never intended to be the end of her educational path. However, somewhere between juggling the responsibilities of a career and a young family, her professional goals got put on hold. Now, thanks to a scholarship from PMMA’s Employee Education Assistance Fund, she’s finally getting back on track.

“Once I got my ADN, I knew I wanted to go on and get my bachelor’s, but with life and everything, I hadn’t been aggressively trying to complete it,” said Stephanie. “Now, thanks to this scholarship, I’m finally focusing on achieving my next goal.”

Stephanie’s focus on her education won’t be taking her away from the community, as she plans on remaining in her current position while working toward her degree.

“I thought about going back to school full-time, but I decided to take the part-time approach,” said Stephanie. “Hopefully within two years I’ll have it completed—that’s the goal anyway.”

Stephanie’s desire to earn her degree is about more than just obtaining another piece of paper or adding a few more initials behind her name, it’s about moving beyond the nuts and bolts of nursing to become a more well-rounded health care professional.

“I think the curriculum will provide a broader scope and help develop the skills needed to be a better nurse,” said Stephanie. “Plus, the additional leadership courses will enable me to take on more of a leadership role within the community.”

In addition to PMMA’s willingness to invest in its employees, Stephanie says it is the people

“I love the relationships we get to build with the staff and residents and the ability to help people on a day-to-day basis,” said Stephanie.

“A lot of us are in this profession simply because we get joy out of helping other people.” ◆

Salina Presbyterian Manor receives 2019 customer experience award from Pinnacle Quality Insight Salina Presbyterian Manor is proud to announce that they are the recipient of Pinnacle Quality Insight’s 2019 Customer Experience Award™.

The Customer Experience Award is given to senior living communities that score in the top 15-percent of the nation in resident satisfaction surveys conducted by Pinnacle Quality Insight for 12 consecutive months. Salina Presbyterian Manor received the award for independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing.

Over the course of 2018, a sampling of Presbyterian Manor’s residents and their families participated in monthly telephone interviews that

include open-ended questions, as well the opportunity to rate Presbyterian Manor in specific categories.
