Salina Presbyterian Manor welcomes our newest residents Please help us give a warm welcome to seven new members of the Salina Presbyterian Manor community.

Two are Connie and Karl Stutterheim, who moved in September. They are living temporarily in an apartment, but will soon move to a duplex unit. First, they chose new appliances, flooring, cabinets and countertops.

Connie is looking forward to having a little more space and a spot to do a little gardening. She enjoys planting vegetables, including dark leafy greens, which she says will grow practically year-round. She’d also like to add a fruit tree.

Well-coiffed residents, thanks to in-house beauty salon

Their moving process went smoothly, thanks to the help they received from their three children. They also have eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The beauty salon at Salina Presbyterian Manor is one of the many amenities that residents enjoy.

The couple has been married for 61 years. Before retirement, Connie worked as a nurse. Karl was an electrical engineer and president of Kasa Controls and Automation, which their son now runs.

In fact, it was the deciding factor for one member of the community.

The couple is pleased with their choice to move to Presbyterian Manor.

“I had always heard you should move before you have to,” Connie said.

They put their names on the waiting list about three years before they decided it was time.

“We’re very satisfied,” Connie said. “It’s very friendly and well-run. And the residents all seem happy.”

The other new members of our community are Nancy and Clay Thompson, Bob and Diane Ott, and Nancy Barton.

“A resident once told me when she was visiting the Manor, she noticed all the ladies’ hair was perfectly styled,” said Cathy Boos, sales and marketing director. “That made her decision to move here final.”

Employee of the Month: Penne Clapsaddle Congratulations to Penne Clapsaddle, our Salina Presbyterian Manor employee of the month for November.

In her free time, Penne enjoys golf, gardening, and spending time with her dog Hugo. She also loves to travel.

Penne has worked at Presbyterian Manor for four and a half years in the dining services department.

Two things you might not know about Penne: She took selfdefense in college, and she wears a 2,000-year-old coin on a chain around her neck. ◆

She has two children, John and Michelle, and she recently became a great-grandmother.

Townhome residents on Windsong, Nova and Vista Courts want to say “many thanks” to Executive Director Christian Gilbert, Chaplain Mary Bridges, and Activities Director Lacey Buhrle for the fun Manor Mingle event held in the three cul de sacs. We all enjoyed meeting Christian and getting acquainted with new townhome residents. Hot cider and Halloween snack bags were distributed, and Chaplain Mary furnished lively music.

Mary’s Musings...

One of the first things we learn in a disaster is that everything is connected. As we battle a pandemic, my prayer has been that we are able to look at all parts of our lives and see them through a new lens. Many things have changed and may continue to change, but our strong foundations support us during difficult times. Christmas is one of those foundations. Advent, the first season of our church year, is my preparation for Christmas. There are four themes in Advent and each Sunday we light a candle to focus on them: hope, love, joy and peace.

I have come to think of Advent as a season of nesting, of preparing our hearts for the coming of God-withus. He fills the nests of our hearts with his presence, though the noise surrounding us sometimes means we don’t realize it’s there.

It is important that we make Advent a time to reflect, ponder and not let the world distract us from our nesting time. I invite each

of you to prepare a nesting place in your heart for Christ to dwell.

Each day you can prepare your heart with this simple ritual. Light your Advent candle for week one, the next week candles one and two, and so on. End with the lighting of the Christ candle on Christmas.

As you light your candle, repeat these words from a poem by Joyce Rupp: “Prepare the nest of hearts. / Patch up the broken parts. / Place more softness in the center. / Sit and warm the home with prayer. / Give the Christ a dwelling place.”

Each evening, take a few minutes to think about the nest you are preparing and reflect on how God has been present in your life this day. Then use Paul’s words from Ephesians 3:17 as your prayer: “May Christ live in our hearts through faith.”

Keep welcoming Christ into your heart-nest this Advent season, remember that it is there that Jesus continues to be born and desires to make his home, if only we will receive him and warm the nest with love. ◆

‘Secret Santa’ coming to Presbyterian Manor

This season, the activities department will host a “Secret Santa” exchange for the townhome and independent living residents.

Each resident will receive a stocking for their door, which is where their secret Santa will leave a surprise. Activity department staff will stop by to have you draw another resident’s name. You will then magically become the secret Santa for that resident. ’Tis the season! ◆

With cases on the rise, we remind you to practice basic safety measures to keep yourselves and others safe from COVID-19. Whenever you leave your residence or are in the presence of others, wear a cloth mask or face covering over your nose and mouth, wash your hands frequently with soap and water or alcoholbased gel, and maintain a safe social distance of six feet or more between yourself and others with whom you do not live. Practicing these simple safety measures can help stop the spread of COVID-19. ◆

Residents share Christmas memories Even decades later, most of us cherish yuletide memories from childhood. To celebrate the season, five Salina Presbyterian Manor residents shared memories of their Christmas traditions with us.

Usually he brought a gift from my friends Mary and Sue Connell.

Mother would tell me that he stopped first at the Connell’s home and that Santa brought their gift with him.

I asked my father if I could go with him to take Santa to his sleigh. I wanted to see his reindeer. Daddy would always explain that he was only going to take Santa to another child’s home, and the sleigh and reindeer were parked way out in the country. As I grew older, I wondered about the real Santa.

Ken Jennison: During the dust bowl days, we could not afford a Christmas tree, so one of my brothers brought in a giant tumbleweed. We called them “Russian thistle.” We decorated the thistle with home-made ornaments and a wheat cross on top. It was a special treat to see that Christmas bush. Our Christmas gift was a few pieces of candy on our plate in the kitchen.

Connie Johnson: When I was a little girl, I would wake up on Christmas morning and Santa Claus would be at the foot of my bed. Santa never talked,

It was a family custom to go to Sue and Mary’s home on East Iron in Salina for dinner on Christmas night. One of those times I went into the bedroom and Santa’s red suit was laying on the bed. At last I knew why Santa never talked: my Santa Claus was Mary Connell.

Years later when we would drive down East Iron Avenue, I would point out the Connell home to my children and grandchildren and tell them that was where Santa Claus lived. I am sure they thought I was rather strange! But, you know I still believe in Santa Claus. He lives on today in my heart and in my precious memories.

Dr. Perry Hunsley:

Santa Claus made his visits after bedtime, unseen. There were empty stockings with names of each.

Seasonal oranges, hard candies, peanuts and other nuts were put in the stockings. We ate cranberries, candied dates and pickles from sauce dishes. We drew names to exchange gifts. Breakfast followed with waffles, cream cheese and fruit marmalade.

Bill Grosser: We put up our Christmas tree a week before and placed a wreath on the front door. Greenery and lights were put over the front porch steps.

Our kids hung their stockings on the fireplace on Christmas Eve. We attended church service Christmas Eve and then came home to eat oyster stew.

On Christmas morning, we opened our gifts after breakfast. Our Christmas dinner always consisted of turkey, yams, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, dressing, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie and creamed corn. All this followed by a nap!

We celebrated the 12 days of Christmas and took the tree and decorations down on Epiphany.

Jean Burch: Mother made a big production out of holidays and birthdays, even though it was during the Depression. She must have saved egg money and cream money for months, because we always had several gifts each under the Christmas tree. Even though they were mostly practical gifts like scarves, snow boots, sweaters and socks, we usually had a surprise gift or something we really wanted.

There was always a big coconut still in the husk under the tree, plus a bag of oranges (rare in the winter), peanuts and candy.

native has 41 years of experience in the hair industry, and she has owned three beauty shops during her career.

One evening during Christmas break, dad would cut the husk off the coconut and saw it in half with a hack saw. We three children would share the small amount of coconut milk and mother shredded the coconut for all of us to eat.

Kate joins Sherry Valentine, a 27year veteran of the Presbyterian Manor salon.

One of my best gifts was a hot water bottle to be filled with hot water to warm my feet at night, as our bedrooms were not heated. I had been using sod irons heated and wrapped in newspaper. Even though we had no electricity for lights, the Christmas tree was always big and beautiful—or least I remember it that way. Christmas morning was exciting! ◆

Sherry has lots of stories to tell from her years behind the chair.

Once while giving a perm, the sink clogged. Her client misheard Sherry when she explained that she couldn’t rinse out the perm because the sink was clogged. “Oh honey,” the resident replied, “Your brain’s not clogged!”
