Salina Presbyterian Manor announces Art is Ageless® winners Salina Presbyterian Manor recently hosted a come-and-go reception for the winning artists in the annual Art is Ageless® juried competition.

The winning artists’ works can be viewed on the Salina Presbyterian Manor Facebook page, Facebook. com/SalinaPresbyterianManor.

“We are honored to exhibit artwork by seniors,” said Cathy Boos, marketing director. “Art is Ageless is unique in featuring only the works of artists age 65 and older.

Our artists prove that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition.”

As a disaster relief worker for the Red Cross, she worked to connect devastated communities with lifesustaining resources. The job took her across the country to respond to disasters as far as Hawaii (after Hurricane Iniki). In addition to hurricanes, Arlena helped coordinate the humanitarian response to many floods and fires.

Employee of the Month: Edie Chaney Congratulations to Edie Chaney, employee of the month for April. She has worked for Salina Presbyterian Manor for around four months as an activity assistant.

When asked what most people would not know about her, Edie said that she was born in Orlando, Fla., and she has three sisters and two brothers.

Edie is married and has two children: Ashley (35) and Chris Edie said when she retires she wants (33). She has five grandchildren: Ella to travel and do volunteer work.

Mary’s Musings Throughout history, early writings and manuscripts were revised from time to time. Historians believe the 23rd Psalm was written around 1,000 B.C. In January, we began exploring Rabbi Harold Kushner’s book “The Lord is my Shepherd” during our weekly chapel services.

Each week, we explored a different phrase of this beloved Psalm and heard a different translation or paraphrase of it.

We explored Rabbi Kushner’s thoughts on the ancient words and today’s meanings.

The book connects two meanings of the same word, staff: In the ancient world, people were very familiar with how the shepherds used their staff to pull their sheep out of the pits they have fallen into.

informed her affinity for disaster relief.

“Growing up on the farm, when the hail hit the wheat, you had to deal with it,” she said. “You helped your neighbor when they needed help at their place. That’s just the way I grew up.”

During a disaster, Arlena was used to working long days, often from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. But the reward was in helping.

“When you can help someone get back in their own home, that’s as much enjoyment as anyone

could possibly have,” Arlena said.

“Knowing you helped is the best feeling.”

It was happenstance that she “ran across” the job about six months after moving to Kansas City.

“I saw an ad in the paper,” Arlena said. “Also, our radio club had met at their office for our meetings, and I just had a feeling it was something I would enjoy.”

Arlena used her radio expertise to keep in touch with her husband when she was away on an assignment for the Red Cross for two weeks at a time. She was

even able to connect disaster victims with their families when telecommunications systems were down. Her radio call was WA0VYS. Arlene was part of the disaster response to many hurricanes, including the following: Juan, 1985; Hugo, 1989; Andrew, 1992; and Iniki, 1992.

Arlena retired from the Red Cross in the late 1990s, but she says she will always feel connected to the organization and its important mission. And she will never forget how good it felt to help people get back on their feet. ◆

We often hear from donors, "I wish I could do more to support the PMMA mission." Many are surprised to discover that through estate planning, they can have a tremendous philanthropic impact on PMMA’s future, while still caring for their own financial needs along the way.

Karen Smith (right), an independent living resident at The Westerly on PMMA’s Wichita campus, plans to give back to the place that has meant so much to her during retirement. Karen made provisions in her will to benefit Wichita Presbyterian Manor.

“When I came here in 2015, they promised I would be cared for, for the rest of my life, even if I ran out of money,” Karen said. “I have saved all my life, but I am not a millionaire, and that security has been a comfort. I decided that leaving my estate to Wichita Presbyterian Manor was a good option. I want to leave anything I have left to someone else who came here with the promise of being cared for, for the rest of their life.”

Karen’s estate planning still leaves her plenty of options while she is living.

“There is not a restriction as to how I spend,” she said. “I started traveling, took a break during the pandemic, and plan to start up again when it is safe. This is a good time in my life.”

Karen, a retired nurse practitioner, began envisioning what she wanted life to be like in retirement while she was still in the throes of her career. After discovering Wichita Presbyterian Manor, she knew it would be the right place to live out the rest of her life.

While many of Karen’s activities were put on hold during the pandemic, she also knew that living at PMMA meant there was help if she needed it. She would be safe and cared for, no matter what.

“I don’t have any children and I have too many nieces and nephews to count,” Karen said. “I didn’t want anyone to have to take care of Aunt Karen. At PMMA, I have independence. Everyone I need is here, everything I need is here.”
