It’s that time of year where our calendars and hearts are full as we celebrate Christmas traditions around our community. Here are just a few of the things we look forward to about sharing the holidays together at Rolla Presbyterian Manor.

Staff and resident carry-in dinner The staff and resident carry-in dinner is an employee appreciation event that Rolla Presbyterian Manor has every Christmas. Staff and Presbyterian Manor will provide food.

The U.S. News and World Report list uses information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the government agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes. CMS assigns one to five stars to each community for how well it performs in health inspections, nurse staffing and level of quality care.

U.S. News now uses the CMS star rating for staffing rather than the overall star rating to determine which communities are given the LIST- continued on page 4

“This gives the staff a chance to eat and visit with the residents from all levels of care. After the meal is complete, the residents present staff with a monetary token of their appreciation, which is presented by the resident council,” said Krystal Grisham, MDS coordinator.

Leland Womack, the current secretary/treasurer for the resident council, has been on the committee since he moved to the campus more than 10 years ago. He’s handled the employee appreciation fund for about seven years. As treasurer, he collects the funds donated by the residents and works with the local bank to have the funds equally placed in money packets to be distributed to employees who have been employed at Presbyterian Manor for six months or longer.

Leland also hands out Christmas cards with a small gift card to those employees who have been employed less than six months.

“The carry-in dinner is special because it allows the residents to show the staff members their appreciation for the labor, work and care given by the staff at Rolla Presbyterian Manor to the residents.

It also allows us to share a meal, camaraderie and learn more about the staff that work here,” said Leland.

Resident Gerald Huddleson added, “It is a nice way to say thank you for all you do.”

And the event is very much

appreciated by the staff.

“This event is special to me because it is an opportunity to get to spend time with the residents and actually have time to visit with them. I started at PMMA in 2002 and was a mom of two kids living paycheck to paycheck. Many years, these funds helped me ensure my children had a good Christmas.

I am grateful for the generosity that I have received through the years from the residents and I truly do think of all of them as family,” said Krystal.

This year’s carryin dinner will be December 13 at 11 a.m.

Are you counting your points and checking them twice?

This year’s resident Christmas Store will take place December 10 in the activity room. This annual tradition includes the exchange of activity points that residents have earned over the past month for new and repurposed items that could be perfect for Christmas gifts.

“We’ll have new and repurposed items like silver, scarves, mittens,

books, jewelry and stuffed animals that residents may enjoy themselves or could wrap up and give to somebody on Christmas. It’s all donated by church groups, staff members, family members and even residents. How to live with purpose at any age

“Make yourself useful,” my dad used to say to me when I was seven, standing around, twisting my arms into skinny pretzels while he washed our family station wagon.

The suds splashed around the blue plastic bucket, his strong forearms scrubbing the baby blue front fenders. The sun shone later as every inch of the car gleamed.

Sitting idly by didn’t seem to work in his world. He was a busy man, a stoic provider for a family of seven children and my mother. He worked and expected the world to give him nothing in return. It was how he operated.

business, a driving force for years.

His whole identity was swaddled around his “purpose” of being Mr. Music (his customers affectionately gave him the moniker which was also the name of his business, a home hi-fidelity/record & tape store which still operates today).

What happened in the months that followed his retirement was watching a man roam around restless as a caged cat. He had no idea what to do with himself, how to “make himself useful.”

And then he found writing.

He found a way to self-propel into a world of meaning by writing, at his own direction, his life stories — through essays and poems and stories. He became consumed by it at times and all of us, his children, stood back in amazement that our father, whom we’d always known to be a savvy business owner, a smart cookie, an ace at poker and pool and golf, suddenly also was a damn good writer.

He penned, literally, his life in words. He had voice, authority and suddenly, a “repurpose.” It brought him joy and safety in a new world of aging that he had to traverse. ◆

The Lord’s Favor

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn.

— Isaiah 61:1-2, NIV Christmas and New Year’s Day link together in our minds. Two of the biggest holidays on the calendar fall one week apart but in two different years.

One is the final annual holiday of one year. The other is the first holiday of the next.

Christ becomes a transition from old to new.

The moment of his birth marks the line between the Old and New Testaments in the Bible. It also

Those whom darkness and sin have made prisoners can find a new life and freedom in Christ. The word “gospel” means good news. The proclamation of salvation through Christ is the ultimate good news.

He is the gift that God gave to the world. Christmas is a time of gift giving as we recognize God’s great gift to us.

January 1 gives the opportunity to start fresh.

After the rejoicing of Christmas, the blank slate of a new year makes the ideal time to start implementing the changes for a new life.

Although many resolutions fall by the wayside, their importance remains. We need points in life where we draw a line to divide old behaviors from new ones. Without them, change will never happen.

As Christmas comes and the New Year follows, find joy in the gift of God’s Son and the gift of completing another year.

Take time to look forward to the coming New Year and prepare for the changes it may bring. May it be for you “A year of the Lord’s favor.” ◆

Christmas light tour Weather permitting, we will take residents on a tour to see Christmas lights around the Rolla community every evening the week of December 9-13.

“They put light throughout Lions Club Park, and we drive through there and go through different neighborhoods through Rolla,” said Joy. Sign-up sheets will be available the first week of December.

Children’s Christmas party The annual Children’s Christmas Party is a favorite holiday event that’s been running for more than 20 years in our community. This year the party will take place on December 23 at 2 p.m. All staff children from newborn through age 12 are invited to attend the event and will receive a gift from Santa. Residents are invited to attend and enjoy watching the kids open presents and visit with Santa.

Goodie bags, drinks and cookies will be provided.

Marketing Director Joelle Freeland shares that, “Santa’s elf helper is always available for parents to stop by to let her know if Santa needs to mention or remind a child to behave, do better in school or be nicer to a sibling. It always surprises a child when Santa can be specific about something.”
