Seven local artists among Art is Ageless® masterpiece level winners Seven winning artists in Lawrence Presbyterian Manor’s annual Art is Ageless® juried competition will be featured in the 2023 Art is Ageless calendar produced by PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®).

“Beth’s Tulips,” a Painting entry by Barbara Hall, “Baby Giraffe Dreams, a Painting entry by Wendy Rose, and “Mandarin Duck,” a Photography entry by Len Scotto, will appear in the calendar this fall.

Works by local winners are automatically entered into a masterpiece level competition with winning art from 14 other PMMA® communities. More than 170 entries were received for this year’s masterpiece competition. The winners are featured in the Art is Ageless calendar with pull-out postcards “Baby Giraffe Dreams” by Wendy Rose

I have several friends who like to knit. They create beautiful things through knitting.

The churches I serve as a pastor Dinah Dutta make quilts that we send to Lutheran World Federation. They are distributed all over the world.

Quilting requires choosing a fabric, cutting, piecing it together, and finally stitching and tying the quilt. I always wanted to learn to quilt. I could not find the time to meet groups when they met. Finally, I asked my church members who quilt, if they could give me a quilt to take home so that I can tie it. The quilting group from my church let me do that. I have to make marks on the fabric to tie the knots, slowly, carefully, I tie each knot. I learned patience and perseverance are very important to tying the knots. Well, where am I going with this?

As I continue to struggle to understand the situation we are facing in the country, we call America the Beautiful, the image of a quilt or a knitted, crocheted product comes to my mind and reminds me that we are created by God beautifully and wonderfully, “For you created my inmost being;

Chaplains learning and team-building For the first time, chaplains from across our PMMA communities gathered together in August for learning, and team-building.

The chaplains came to Wichita to participate in the Global Leadership Summit, a worldwide event simulcast out of Chicago, that focused not only on leadership but on personal growth as well.

“The variety of teachers used the accomplishments in their lives to inspire and motivate each of us to continue to develop in our own lives,” said Wichita Presbyterian Manor Chaplain Greg Spring.

“Together our chaplains learned, were inspired and motivated.”

“I took pages of notes that I will be reviewing and applying where needed,” said Chaplain Spring, sharing that he already has plenty of thoughts to share with the rest of the leadership team at Wichita Presbyterian Manor during the devotional at their daily meeting.

“Leadership is about building relationships,” said Rev. Dutta as she recapped what she took away from

the summit. “Caring for residents or employees, and treating them as a family is the key to leadership.”

The chaplains say they were grateful for the opportunity to keep growing.

“On behalf of all our Chaplains, I would like to thank PMMA for investing in our lives and careers by making the Global Leadership Summit a Networking opportunity,” said Chaplain Spring. u

Lawrence Presbyterian Manor Chaplain Rev. Dinah Dutta agrees. “I was reassured, and uplifted by the talks, and blessed to meet the other chaplains,” she said.

The chaplains did spend some time away from the summit for meals and a group activity. PMMA CEO Bruce Shogren joined the chaplains, offering uplifting words about the importance of the chaplains’ work in each of our PMMA communities, which underscores service guided by Christian values.

Rev. Dutta appreciated how the chaplains encouraged each other “to love one another, respect, and be part of our mission.”

The chaplains left the conference with a lot to think about and plenty of ideas to take back to their communities.

Knitting – continued from page 1 you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well (Psalm 139:14).

As I write this note we have a difficult issue in front of us to process. Many young adults ask me to explain what is right, and what is wrong. I tell them I do not know what is right or wrong. I ask God to help me understand. Most importantly, as a Christian believer and an ordained pastor my understanding of Christianity and the faith I accepted through the baptism of water and the Holy Spirit is not about right or

wrong. It is about following Jesus’ words, love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12: 31), do unto others what you want them to do (Matthew 7:12). Therefore, knitted together in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), wrapped by His unconditional love, and forgiveness, we continue to knit together, make a new quilt, cutting, shaping, and tying ourselves and our communities in spite of all the confusion and chaos around us.
