Newton Presbyterian Manor’s Art is Ageless® call for entries underway

Changes begin this month.

Campus facelift construction begins Heading into 2020, it was all planned out. A project to update and revitalize many areas of Newton Presbyterian Manor’s first floor of the main building was announced and ready to start.

Like many plans, COVID-19 interrupted the project. For the safety of everyone involved and the unknowns presented, the project was shelved.

You may recall, we shared a story of former resident, Christena Bowen’s generosity and her desire to leave a legacy. At her passing in 2014, she left a gift to Newton Presbyterian Manor earmarked for remodeling and capital improvements.

It was her gift that served as the catalyst for the proposed renovations.

Now in 2021, thankfully, a new plan emerges. With some careful planning, the project will be able to move forward, adhering to COVID-19 protocols while providing limited disruption to the overall operation of the community.

All artists age 65 and older are invited to participate in the annual Art is Ageless® juried exhibit and competition at Newton Presbyterian Manor March 25 – April 9.

Artists compete in nine categories, including painting, drawing, photography, quilting and sculpture and may be designated as amateur or professional.

The complete rules and category listing is found online at ArtIsAgeless.org. Artists may choose to enter their works for exhibit only. For the competition, works are to have been completed in the past five years (since January 2016).

Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the Art is Ageless calendar in 2022. Works to be entered for

Vaccine distribution has begun in our community. Every person who receives the vaccine will strengthen the protection for all residents, staff and the community at-large. PMMA strongly encourages our families, employees and residents to carefully consider obtaining a vaccine for themselves as well as their loved ones. ◆

Redger named director of nursing at Presbyterian Manor A new director of nursing has been named at Newton Presbyterian Manor. Hannah Redger, RN, assumed the role in December after six months as the director of assisted living and home health on the campus.

“Hannah has done an excellent job leading the assisted living team and handling many of the tasks necessary for staff and resident COVID testing,” said Marc Kessinger, executive director. “We know she will bring strong leadership, energy and a commitment to resident care to her new role.”

Beginning this month, temporary walls will go up and old walls will come down throughout the main lobby and dining areas.

Phase one of the renovations will allow for a new dining experience, updated lobby with casual seating and a hospitality area. This new space can also be utilized as a commons room for meetings and presentations.

Phase two renovations will move down the hallways with new flooring, lighting, doors, wall decorations and furniture and extend into common areas and gathering rooms. From there, more updates are slated.

Hannah Redger, RN

Prior to her director’s role in assisted living at Newton Presbyterian Manor, Redger worked for Newton Medical Center and as a travel nurse in trauma and orthopedics. A graduate of the Hesston College nursing program, Redger has been a charge nurse, quality control nurse, case manager and wound care nurse.

“The community of donors and friends of Newton Presbyterian Manor play an integral part of this investment. So many people want to help seniors during this pandemic. Now is the time,” said Marc.

“I’m honored to accept this new role on the Presbyterian Manor management team,” said Redger. “I look forward to getting to know our current and future residents as well as the employees in the health care setting.”

The Art is Ageless® program encourages Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions

throughout the year.

Local competition winners will join winners from 14 other PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica) communities to be judged at the systemwide level.

This month’s Bravo goes to Tammy Hall

Robert Keckler shared: “On Saturday, I noticed that my mini-refrigerator was no longer working. I mentioned it to Ms. Tammy, who was passing out supper. I had hoped to put all the contents in a box to take to the kitchen for cold storage.

Within minutes of supper being served, Ms. Tammy showed up with a different fridge. She would not allow me to lift either fridge. We took everything out of mine and she then lifted the old fridge out and replaced it with the new one. All told, it took her about 30 minutes and the new fridge was up and running. She certainly saved me a great deal of money and the agony of watching my perishables perish. Way above and beyond!” ◆
