Renovation begins at Manor of the Plains

PMMA unveils new logo, brand identity As an organization evolves and grows, so should brand awareness. In the past year, Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America has embarked on a journey to create a brand image that could represent all its communities and provide greater brand awareness for the entire PMMA system.

It may look like a Manor of the Plains is within a construction zone these days. It will all be worth it this fall when the renovation work is complete, and we have an updated community to enjoy.

The new mark had to reflect PMMA’s core values, mission and beliefs. It needed to be simple, but sophisticated enough to convey the high quality of care and service found in PMMA communities. It also needed to be practical, and demonstrate reliability and integrity. At its board meeting March 5, the PMMA Board of Trustees approved a new logo set for the PMMA system.

The new logo captures the spirit of our heritage and commitment to the future. The simplicity of the mark pays tribute to the original request from Alice Kalb to the Presbyterian Church. The upward “V” elements serve to remind us that our core purpose is to provide compassionate and caring services to better the lives of seniors.

“The current look is 23 years old, it’s tired and dated. It was simply time to renovate the healthcare and assisted living areas at Manor of the Plains,” said Bill Taylor, chief operating officer for Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America.

The $1.5 million renovation project includes major renovation work that starts at the main healthcare entrance. This area will get a new door, new vestibule and new flooring, and the updates will continue with new lighting and wall coverings throughout health

The elements of the logo represent the three levels of living (independent, assisted and healthcare) or outstretched arms that protect and serve our residents. These elements are blue to suggest energy and action because it empowers residents to remain healthy, active and engaged.

It also underscores respect and understanding that seniors, as citizens and individuals, retain their rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The logo has three different diamond colors, utilizing colors from the previous PMMA logos.

The diamond elements sit atop the “V” elements to signify the core purpose of our organization. The PMMA gold diamond relates to the Presbyterian Manor gold standard for providing quality senior services; the purple diamond refers to the faith-based mission that is fulfilled daily by the staff members at each PMMA community; the Aberdeen green diamond refers to the commitment to healthy living through the intentional balance of physical, emotional, social, spiritual and intellectual components of wellness.

Over the next several months, you will begin to see the new logos in our communications, advertising, and signage. We look forward to continuing to provide you with the quality senior services guided

by Christian values that you have come to expect. ◆

February’s Angel in Motion Earlier this year, the Angel in Motion Program was developed

by Kristi Wordelman, RN, MDS coordinator, Tehren Esparza, RN, case manager, and Tammy Thompson, RN, director of nursing.

Employees, residents and their families are invited to vote each month for the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) who they feel has provided care or services above and beyond what is required of them.

Cameron Good demonstrates all of these qualities and more on a regular basis, and Manor of the Plains is honored to name him as the February Angel in Motion.

Agnes Rabe, will celebrate her 92nd birthday on August 1. Her son Kevin calls her an “amazing woman.”

When it comes to Agnes Rabe, Mother’s ‘Day’ seems inadequate After raising eight kids, all of them boys, Manor of the Plains resident Agnes Rabe has probably earned more than just one day of admiration and pampering each year.

However, it is safe to say that all of those years of hard work and dedication didn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated.

“Mom was probably one of the hardest working people I ever met,” said Agnes’ son Kevin. “We would go to bed at nine or 10 p.m. and we’d wake up at two in the morning and find mom in the bath tub— that was the only time she had to herself.”

One of Agnes’ other sons, Gary, has also grown to appreciate his mom’s seemingly superhuman abilities to keep he and his other brothers clothed and fed.

“With all of us at home at one time, it wasn’t really easy to do all the laundry, but she kept it up, and we never went hungry,” said Gary.

Agnes’ natural instinct to always extend a hand to someone in need is just one sign of what Kevin calls his mother’s “caring heart.”

Even just putting dinner on the table each and every night was no small task, but it was one Agnes excelled at.

However, that doesn’t mean that Agnes was one to spare the rod with her own children because she recognized that discipline was the other side of the “caring parent” coin.

“Mom made the best fried chicken ever—and we raised 225 chickens twice a year, so we ate a lot of chicken,” said Gary. “A typical meal was four complete chickens, 10 pounds of potatoes and at least a gallon of vegetables.”

“When it came to discipline, I think I can speak on behalf of all my brothers. We were more scared of mom than dad,” said Kevin.

And often, Agnes wasn’t just providing for her own family of 10.

But looking back on it all of these years later, Agnes’ sons are filled with fond memories and appreciation.

“She never knew when we’d bring a friend home,” said Kevin. “There might be three or four extra people at dinner time, and she’d never turn anyone away.”

“I just love everything she did for me and all my brothers,” said Gary.

“She cared about each and every one of us. She didn’t favor anybody, she cared for all of us.” ◆

care and the dining room. The salon will be completely remodeled and the nurse’s station will be turned into a living room area for residents to enjoy.

The rooms also will get a facelift with new flooring and lighting, and the old textured ceilings will be scraped. Bathrooms will get new flooring and some new fixtures.

Assisted living changes include brightening up the hallways with new lighting, flooring and wall treatments. The dining room will change completely with a new set up, flooring and fixtures.

Living room areas will be converted into comfortable spaces to meet, and the employee break room will become a more feasible area for staff.

“At Manor of the Plains, we’ve always set the standard for quality of care. The renovation will help us match that standard we have for care in our home for the residents.

It’s a pretty exciting time here right now,” said Brad Radatz, regional director of operations.

The experts behind the renovation are general contractors Sutherland Builders, architect Vince Haines with Gravity Works and designers Kelley Hoffman and Adrianne Bellew with RDG Design.

“We’re very excited to have all these members on board and the team at Manor of the Plains is working hard to get it done. When you visit, you really feel the team effort behind the renovation. And it will better serve the community of Dodge City,” said Taylor. ◆
