John Van Hook joins staff as new executive director
Manor of the Plains on U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Home list
John Van Hook, a senior living administrator with more than 30 years of experience, joined the Manor of the Plains staff as the new executive director on October 16. “I am very eager to use my experience and skills in optimizing resident care and building positive employee relations at Manor of the Plains,” John said. Prior to joining the team at Manor of the Plains, John served as the executive director of Trinity Manor in Dodge City from May 2014 to September 2019.
John Van Hook PMMA’s mission to provide quality senior services guided by Christian values is one of the things that attracted John to the position here. “I have always been a firm believer in the idea and practice that as a healthcare provider we should always do the right thing for our residents, our staff and the community we are part of. This is more than a job, it is a calling to help others, and I have seen these values and beliefs actually be a part of how this community is performing its responsibilities—not just to our residents but the staff and the community in which we are located as well. It is a welcome change to be part of an organization that follows

Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City is on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes 2019 short-term rehabilitation list. The senior living community received the highest score of a high performing rating to make the list, available today at www. usnews.com/nursinghomes. The U.S. News and World Report list uses information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the government agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes. CMS assigns one to five stars to each community for how well it performs in health inspections, nurse staffing and level of quality care. U.S. News now uses the CMS

Veterans Day at Manor of the Plains
Veterans Day at the Manor is always special and everyone always looks forward to learning about each Veterans adventures. Each veteran was able to explain their service and even add a story if they would like.
“The most noticeable and most enjoyable part of becoming part of the team at Manor of the Plains is how wonderful the seniors we serve are. The team of staff we have are each awesome in how caring and dedicated they are to serving our seniors. It is truly all about bringing to life the mind set of making every day the best we can for the seniors we serve,” said John. In his free time, John enjoys reading and learning new things. He also likes to travel—preferably to destinations within driving distance—and enjoys trivia with friends. “Great coffee” is also a favorite thing of his. Welcome to the team, John! ◆

star rating for staffing rather than the overall star rating to determine which communities are given the High Performing designation. This decision reflects expert opinion on the importance of staffing in quality of care, as well as the availability since April 2018 of more accurate data on nurse staffing levels in each community or center. New in 2018 was a Short-Stay Rehabilitation rating evaluating the care delivered to patients after a hospitalization for surgery, heart attack, stroke or similar condition. To be eligible for a short-stay rating, a center’s performance on at least one outcome measure and data on either physical therapy time

or RN and total nurse staffing must have been available from CMS. Outcome measures included the percentages of short-stay patients who were rehospitalized within 30 days, had an emergency room visit within 30 days and were successfully discharged to their home or community. Manor of the Plains (Dodge City), Parsons, Topeka and Wichita in Kansas and Aberdeen Heights (Kirkwood) in Missouri were named High Performing in the Short-Stay category, placing them among the top 2,250 short-term rehabilitation communities in the country according to U.S. News. “Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica employees continue to

focus their efforts on delivering quality care every day,” said PMMA President and CEO Bruce Shogren. “The High Performing designation confirms their good work.” All Medicare- and Medicaidcertified health care centers were evaluated by U.S. News. To be eligible for an overall rating, a center must have received reimbursement from CMS in July 2019 and had sufficient data to evaluate quality in that rating.
