Manor artists among Art is Ageless® masterpiece level winners

Two winning artists in Lawrence Presbyterian Manor’s annual Art is Ageless® juried competition will be featured in the 2020 Art is Ageless calendar produced by PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica).

“Onions II,” a painting by Jewell Willhite, and “Thomas Christmas Stocking,” a Christmas entry by Rick Prosser, will appear in the calendar when it is released this fall.

Works by local winners are automatically entered into a masterpiece level competition with winning art from 16 other PMMA communities. More than 190 entries were received for this year’s masterpiece competition.

The winners are featured in the Art is Ageless calendar with pull-out postcards and greeting cards.

“We are blown away by the artistic talent in our community,” said Curtis Jones, sales and marketing director at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. “Residents and friends of PMMA’s Art is Ageless program are proving that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition.”

Cyber Café event provides participants with hands-on support The community’s first installment in the Cyber Café & Brunch series held on July 18 gave participants individual assistance and hands-on support related to texting and managing contacts.

Weekly yoga class teaches ancient art

For more than 5,000 years, people all over the world have been practicing yoga as a way to find peace and harmony while improving their overall health.

In 2015, that practice made its way to Lawrence Presbyterian Manor through a class offered by Lawrence’s Department of Parks and Recreation.

The class, held each Wednesday afternoon from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., is taught by Mary Ann Saunders, a woman who is a dedicated practitioner of yoga.

“I learned yoga in college a little over 50 years ago. I had really injured my back practicing for a final in my Modern Dance class and I herniated a disk,” said Mary Anne. “A grad student said ‘you need to learn yoga’ so it was that wonderful person that introduced it to me.”

“The primary questions about texting centered around sending particular objects like, ‘How do you text a photo?’ ‘How do you text a video?’ ‘How do you text a web link?’ and ‘How do you text to multiple contacts?’” said Curtis Jones, director of sales and marketing.

Participants at the event were split evenly between Apple and Android users, so staff members familiar with each operating system were on hand to walk attendees through the various topics of discussion.

A second Cyber Café was held on August 15. While more events have not yet been scheduled, more will likely be added in the future. Stay tuned! ◆

As a virtually no-impact form of exercise, Mary Ann has found that yoga is not only a good way to help people recover from an injury, but it can actually help prevent injuries from occurring in the first place.

“Yoga has you move very slowly in and out of the postures or asanas.

That, and learning to listen to your body and its limitations, is what makes yoga an excellent form of exercise for anyone, but especially older folks who are living with more and more limitations the body has as it ages,” said Mary Ann. While residents in the community have numerous options when it comes to exercise, Mary Ann believes that the hands-on nature of yoga combined with the watchful eye of a trained instructor adds benefits that cannot be obtained by watching a video or simply working out alone.

Since its inception, Mary Ann’s class has attracted a devoted following and, over the years, she has been able to witness her students’ improvement firsthand while developing some close personal relationships.

“I have really enjoyed getting to know the folks in this class,” said Mary Ann. “Some have been a part of it since we started in 2015, and it is very gratifying to see folks start to feel better after just a few weeks of class.” ◆

Art is Ageless, open exclusively to people age 65 and older, is a copyrighted program of PMMA. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years.

PMMA’s Art is Ageless program encourages Lawrence Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as additional art-related events and activities throughout the year.

Started in 1980, Art is Ageless is an extension of PMMA’s wellness programs, which focus on mental, physical, social and spiritual health.
