Commun ty Matters Lawrence Presbyterian Manor
Sending ‘Angels’ to the Good Samaritan Program Special angels will soon be adorning Christmas trees and holiday displays at every Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica (PMMA) senior living community. The “angels” are paper ornaments that will arrive throughout the holiday season along with gifts to the annual Christmas Angel Appeal, which raises funds for the Good Samaritan Program for Benevolent Care. Donors who make gifts are asked to return paper Angel ornaments along with their gifts. The ornaments pay tribute to donors’ family members or friends and are displayed at PMMA communities designated by the donors. During the past two years, donors to the angel appeals have given more than $90,000 to the Good Samaritan Program. The program assists PMMA residents who have out-lived their financial resources through no fault of their own. Since PMMA began 66 years ago, no residents have been asked to leave because they exhausted their financial resources. If you would like to participate in the Angel Appeal, please email development@pmma.org or call 800-336-8511.

A time to be thankful
Residents share their thoughts this holiday season It may seem much of the Thanksgiving holiday is focused on food, football and shopping, but in reality it’s much more. While we are thankful for many things throughout the year, Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to come together with family and loved ones to focus on why we are truly thankful. Many people find Thanksgiving a perfect time to reflect on their health and happiness. Others like to reminisce about their childhood, past holidays or amusing stories. However you and your family decide to spend the holiday, we hope that it’s filled with happiness and wonderful moments. Here is what some of our residents are thankful for this holiday season: “I am thankful for the staff members on the Wheatlands Health Care Center floor. They give excellent care to my husband, Paul, a resident since May 1, 2013.” — Jan Jess “We remember a Thanksgiving when my mother ran the motel on Sixth Street, owned by the Webster family. And on Thanksgiving Day we ate lunch at the motel and had an ice and snow storm. We watched the cars going up the hill to Iowa Street getting stuck and causing a traffic jam. Now we are thankful that we are at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor and enjoying all the friendly staff and residents.” —Richard & Eva Steffen “I am endlessly thankful for my good health at my age (90) – no walker, no cane, no hearing aids. I’m especially thankful for everything here at Presbyterian Manor – good caregivers, very good food and a very comfortable home (apartment). What could be better!!!” —Betty Jo Miller “I am thankful for my husband, Al. He tells ‘sometimes’ funny jokes and encourages me to use my creativity. Thankful for a great washer and dryer just across the hall from 502! Thankful for friends and relatives. Thankful for my daughters Joy and Susie, and son Albie. Thankful for the opportunity to sing in the LPM choir. Thankful for my deceased parents Charlie and Cleo, whom we loved dearly. Al says he is thankful for me, family, and friends – and the new ones at LPM.” —Janet & Al DeMaranville
