Employees receive education assistance Two employees at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor have received assistance to continue their education through PMMA’s (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s) Employee Education Assistance program. Samantha Flickinger, CNA Samantha Flickinger is planning on using the scholarship she received to take summer classes. “I was inspired to apply for the scholarship when I was told that I was qualified. At first, I didn’t think I had been working at the Presbyterian Manor long enough. I have applied for scholarships before but had never gotten one,” said Samantha. Samantha is a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and has worked at ASSISTANCE – continued on page 4
For resident Sandra Collins, Thanksgiving is all about family, turkey and traditions. “We did it the same way year after year. My mother and my husband’s mother really never did the Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners. It was our grandmothers that had done it. So, when they got too old, I took it over and did it for a lot of years until I could hand it off to my daughter. Now one of my granddaughters does it,” said Sandra. As families grew, so did the plans. Sandra has three daughters, three TRADITIONS – continued on page 2

granddaughters, three grandsons, three great-grandchildren and more on the way. “We end up having 25 people, sometimes more,” said Sandra. For Sandra, the bigger the better. “I’m an only child and always wanted a big family. I think I finally got it! I’ve really enjoyed these big get-togethers. I just enjoy whenever I can be with all of my kids, grandkids and great grandkids,” said Sandra.

As for the Thanksgiving meal, that’s traditional, too.

“The men always want turkey, so we have a turkey dinner. When the young ones started out doing the turkey, I’d spend the night and do the turkey for them … everyone’s pretty intimidated about that. We all usually bring something. I made the dressing for years. I also used to make homemade rolls but now I just buy them. And I used to make pie but don’t cook much anymore,” said Sandra. As the younger generations have grown, they’ve taken on more of a role at Thanksgiving. “Usually on Thanksgiving night we put up the Christmas tree. Some of us older ones aren’t doing so much but the kids help and reach up as high as they can,” said Sandra. ◆

Employee spotlight: Lisa House Lisa House recently joined the team as the new assisted living director of nursing. Get to know more about her and what makes memory care in our community so special. Q: What do you enjoy about your new role at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor? A: Interacting with the residents. Q: How do you like to spend your free time? A: Hiking, biking, reading and traveling. Q: Tell us about your family. A: I have four wonderful sons. Their names are Brett, Jeffrey, Matthew and Levi. They are each on their own, working and going to college. I have a wonderful Aussie-
doodle named Sophie. Q: What can you tell us about memory care at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor? A: Our programs in memory care are exceptional and personcentered. Staff in our memory care have been with the Presbyterian Manor since the memory care opened. Some staff have worked here for 10+ years. Q: What makes memory care at our community different from others? A: The staff in memory care at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor continue to provide consistent, respectful, person-centered care. Lawrence Presbyterian Manor almost a year and a half. “The scholarship is helping me get through my schooling at the University of Kansas. A few of my classes I am currently taking help me understand medical terms and their meaning. This helps with any medical term one of my fellow nurses could say to me and may not think to explain. I am planning to go into the medical field after I get bachelor’s degree,” said Samantha. Emma McClelland, administrative assistant Emma McClelland plans to apply

her scholarship for furthering her education in the Certified Medication Assistant (CMA) program at Neosho, Kansas. “I applied for this scholarship to further my education. I also applied so that I could help the residents and staff at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor,” said Emma. Emma is currently an administrative assistant to the director of nursing. She also works some shifts on the weekend as a CNA. She’s worked on our campus since 2010. “This scholarship will help me to help the residents more. This is something that is going to help

me in the long run to become a great nurse once I enroll in nursing school,” said Emma. The education assistance program provides funds to employees for accredited educational programs leading to a certification, license or degree. Applications are accepted and reviewed every spring. To be eligible, employees must have been employed at Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America for at least one year at the time the award is made (usually mid-summer). Funds are paid after the successful completion (a “C” grade or higher) of the approved course and can be used to cover tuition, fees and books. ◆
