Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America announces Art is Ageless® winners Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America has announced the winners of its annual, systemwide Art is Ageless® competition. The works of more than 60 senior artists from Kansas and Missouri will be featured in the 2022 Art is Ageless calendar and greeting cards.

Art is Ageless is open exclusively to people age 65 and older. Competition pieces and works must have been completed in the past five years. To be eligible for PMMA’s masterpiece level competition, artists entered a juried competition at one of 15 Presbyterian “Palingenesis of Pulsars and Manor communities in Kansas and Missouri. Planets Part 1” by local artist Artists not interested in competition were invited to enter the Art is Ageless exhibit only.

More than 160 pieces were judged at the masterpiece level for inclusion in the calendar and Art is Ageless greeting cards.

Craig Boyers won in the painting category and will be featured on a postcard in the 2022 Art is Ageless calendar.

The Best of Show – Professional winner is Carol Rondinelli with her drawing “Just Me and Teddy in a Strange World.” Rondinelli entered the competition at Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kan. The Best of Show – Amateur winner is Jan Warren with her quilt “Book Shelf Quilt.” Warren entered the competition at Salina Presbyterian Manor in Salina, Kan. The Art is Ageless program includes art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions on PMMA® campuses throughout the year.

Art is Ageless is a copyrighted program of Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica that started in 1980. The program is an extension of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s wellness programs, which focus on mental, physical, social and spiritual health.

Employee of the month: Shawn Bretton Environmental Services Supervisor Shawn Bretton is our employee of the month. Shawn has been with Salina Presbyterian Manor for more than 16 years. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children: Daeton, age 16, and Carissa, 12. The family also has one dog and three cats.

Shawn’s hobbies are spending time with family; listening, watching, reading and collecting movies, music and books; exploring Kansas and the larger U.S.; writing and filmmaking.

One thing you might not know about Shawn is he scares very easily, especially in the dark. But he kind of likes it — he often explores the “spookier side” on his travels.

Shawn is still working on becoming a professional writer, and he wants to continue to explore the world with his family. u

The blanket in the shape of a fiveshelf bookcase is chockablock with clues about the Warrens.

“I tried to incorporate books in it that have meaning to us, that refer to our hobbies or places we’ve been,” Jan said.

A Bible and other religious texts attest to the importance of faith in the Warren household. Spines made from patterns featuring

saxophones and notes demonstrate their love of music. Three Kansas universities each have their own volume. So do many holidays, which reflect Jan’s enjoyment of seasonal decorating.

On the top shelf, some books reference Jan’s Scotch-Irish and Swiss heritage. A stitched title on one spine reads “Lindsay,” her grandmother’s maiden name, and “Scotland,” her homeland. The

The pleasure of Jan’s bookshelf quilt is in all the details she layered into it. In these choices, you can see her mind at work: a scrap of a red-and-white gingham print became a volume labeled “Cookbook.” Most home cooks will instantly recognize the reference to the “Betty Crocker Cookbook” and its iconic gingham cover.

To add other titles to the spines of some books, Jan used pieces of salvage — the edge on the side of woven fabric that prevents it from unraveling. It’s often printed with the name of the fabric pattern, and Jan turned many of these into

book titles. For example, she matched the title “Fiddle Dee — It Was Meant to Be” to a book in the children’s section.

In addition to books, Jan styled her shelf with a globe, fishbowl, blue and white china plates, and prints from four national parks: three the Warrens have visited and the Grand Canyon, where they’re headed next.

“It was fun to put it together and see what fabrics looked good next to one another,” Jan said. “And I wanted to be sure I put in leaning books and stacked books and some other objects to make it look like a real bookshelf.”

Though Jan is new to quilting, she learned to sew in junior high. A couple of friends encouraged her to give it a try. When she got

stuck, Jan consulted a book, a YouTube video or a friend.

First, she made a several holidaythemed quilts to add to her holiday decorations. Then a bookshelf quilt caught her eye on Pinterest, an online image-sharing service.

“I thought that would be a good way to use up scraps,” Jan said. It turned out so well that an artist friend urged her to enter the Art is Ageless® competition at Salina Presbyterian Manor.

When she’s not planning her next quilt, Jan works part time at the Salina Dairy Queen, which she owns and operates with her husband, a retired schoolteacher.

“I decorate the ice cream cakes,” Jan said. “It’s another artistic outlet for me.” u

Mary’s Musings By Mary Bridges, Chaplain “Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.” — Thich Nhat Hanh In my August “Musings,” I invited each of you to join me in choosing, practicing, knowing and living joy.

Here’s an update on how it’s working. The night of Aug. 25, I thought I heard rain, then rolled over and went back to sleep. When I got up, the floors were wet and the kitchen was flooded. A small plastic pipe developed a hole and sent an arc of water into our home. We were overwhelmed, but a series of phone calls brought people to help, and we came up with a plan.

I put up a quick post on Facebook and received a surprising reply from our son’s high school sweetheart, who is Neola O’Neil’s niece. She told me about a memorable experience she and Todd shared

while sailing at Lake Wilson one Sunday. The wind died down, and they had trouble getting his small sailboat back to shore. As a result, they adopted “Sailing” by Christopher Cross as “their song.” It ends with these poignant lines: “Well it’s not far back to sanity, at least it’s not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away and find serenity Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see.

Believe me.

“Sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free” Joy comes from the most unexpected places. When I shared the news about our kitchen disaster, I heard from a friend for the first time in years. She shared a memory of a song with a message of joy and hope, and that became the source of my smile. u
