“Bee on Geranium,” a photograph by Carol Bramon, will appear in the calendar when it is released this fall.

In addition, “Summer Flowers,” a painting by Mary Kate Saltzman, and “Morning Glory,” a painting by Carol Bramon, will be featured on the Art is Ageless greeting cards.

A will to help Karen Werdehausen and other Fulton Presbyterian Manor therapists provide the invaluable service of getting residents back on their feet and back in their homes.

Growing up watching her twin sister struggle with the debilitating effects of Cerebral Palsy, Karen developed a deep respect for the importance of physical therapy.

“Going through that and experiencing that, I had a passion from there,” said Karen, who has worked as a Physical Therapist Assistant at Presbyterian Manor for nearly 13 years.

Tresa Allen, marketing director, said this month Presbyterian Manor would like to recognize Karen and all the therapists who work at the community providing a vital service to residents.

“We love our therapy department because they work so hard and their goal is to get our folks in good shape to do the things they need to do,” said Tresa.

Presbyterian Manor therapists work with existing residents experiencing health problems or those living at the community temporarily to undergo rehabilitation after a surgery or illness.

A little therapy fun with therapists Karen Werdehausen and Shaeana Cobbins, Raymond Pfaff, director of nursing, and residents Joseph Barks, Dorris Pitt, Alice Houf and Gertrude Vandeloecht.

“We have people that come in with all sorts of diagnoses,” Karen said.

“They are weak and we get them stronger so they can go back home where they want to be.”

Karen said the most rewarding part of her job is establishing relationships with residents and getting to know them personally. She appreciates that the residents have reached an age where they aren’t afraid to share their thoughts.

“The best part is they really don’t have filters,” she said. “They just tell you what they think when they think

it. I love hearing stories from their childhood. It makes you realize the things that you take for granted today.”

Building a friendship with residents also helps them feel comfortable, Karen said.

“They get excited about coming to therapy instead of it being a chore,” she said. “Especially once you get to know them, they are kinda like family. We joke around with them.

We just want to make their lives better.” u

New role suits employee In honor of International Housekeeping Week Sept. 8-14, Fulton Presbyterian Manor would like to recognize Julie LaRue, who recently transferred from the dining services department to housekeeping services.

She said she elected to make the move because she wanted to build skills in another area of care.

“She is doing an awesome job so far!” said Tresa Allen, marketing director.

Housekeeping is a perfect match for Julie, who takes pride in a job well done.

Julie has worked at Fulton Presbyterian Manor for a little over two years and changed departments around the first of July.

“I like for things to be clean,” she said.

What keeps her motivated?

When it comes to her job, Julie believes in working smarter, not harder.

“My family really more than anything,” she said. “My grandbabies.” u

It’s been a good change.

“I get to see the residents more and visit with them more often,” she said.

Week celebrates everything great about Assisted Living In 1995, the National Center for Assisted Living set aside one week in September as National Assisted Living Week to celebrate residents and staff in this area of care. It begins on Grandparents Day, Sept. 8, and runs the entire week. This year’s theme is “A Spark of Creativity.”

The Fulton Presbyterian Life

Enrichment Director and Marketing/ Social Services Director are planning a week of fun activities for Assisted Living residents. There will be games, prizes and a party on Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. to celebrate both the AL residents and staff.

There will be prizes handed out daily leading up to the party, which will

feature cake, ice cream, punch, balloons and even more prizes.

“We are excited about this AL celebration!” said Tresa Allen, marketing director.

Fulton residents appreciate the homey environment and loving care they receive in the Assisted Living neighborhood. u

Here’s a little of what residents have to say about assisted living: “If I couldn’t be at home then this is the place to be.”

“The people are nice here.”

“It is close to family members.”

“You can have family here just like it is at home.”

“It is handy to have a lot done for me (medication, meals, etc.). There is a “I have assistance when I need it; when lot of convenience to it.”

“When I have my hearing aids out I know there is someone there in case of an emergency.”

“I don’t dislike anyone or anything here.”

The winners are featured in the Art is Ageless calendar with pullout postcards and greeting cards.

“We are so lucky to have the Art is Ageless competition and are blessed to have local artists who enter annually,” said Tresa Allen, marketing director.

Art is Ageless, open exclusively to people age 65 and older, is a copyrighted program of PMMA. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years.

seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year.

Started in 1980, Art is Ageless is an extension of PMMA’s wellness programs, which focus on mental, physical, social and spiritual health.

Residents and friends of PMMA’s Art is Ageless program are proving that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition. u
