Owens celebrate long marriage

When it comes to knowing how to make a marriage last, Leta and Richard Owen could probably write the book.

They tied the knot on May 16, 1959, recently marking 58 years of marriage.

Missouri Department of Education for 40 and a half years, and Richard retired from AZZ Electric after 30 years of service.

Richard and Leta have a niece, Stacy Bonderer, that they’re very close with, and have lived at Fulton Presbyterian Manor since December 2016. While they’ve enjoyed a long, successful marriage, Richard admits his wedding day wasn’t his favorite.

“My wedding day was terrible; standing up there for 20 minutes with everyone looking at you was horrible. I just wanted to say ‘I do’ and go on.”

In 1984 Leta and Richard celebrated 25 years of marriage.

Not long after they exchanged vows, they went on their honeymoon, which included a visit to a train engine.

“Richard likes train engines,” said Leta. “But Richard forgot his billfold in the hotel. We went back

to the hotel and it was still there. At that time the hotels were family owned and not corporate.”

When asked the key to a long marriage, they said patience, forgiveness, and sometimes you just have to turn the other cheek.

Accolades for painting of Alley Spring Mill

Fulton resident Wanda Wickell’s painting “Alley Spring Mill” will be featured in the 2018 Art is Ageless calendar.

“Even though I’m not a professional artist, in December of 2016 at 94 years old I had a desire to try to capture the beauty of lovely Alley Spring Mill at Emmince, Mo. I don’t think any painting, certainly not mine, can do it justice. For years, my late husband, Joe, and I collected the history of Missouri’s mills. Believe me, you haven’t seen Missouri unless you’ve visited our beautiful mill country! Go and enjoy!”

Wanda also won Best of Show – Amateur at the local level before going on to win at the system-wide level.

Wanda may not think her painting does the mill justice, but we certainly think it does. Congratulations to Wanda and all other AIA winners!

Get to know: Karen Werdenhausen

During the month of October, we celebrate a very important part of our Fulton Presbyterian Manor family: our physical therapists!

Karen Werdenhausen has been helping our residents improve and regain function for more than 11 years.

“Karen is a wonderful asset to us and our residents. She is very kind, passionate and shows a lot of love and care to our residents, no matter if they are here for just a short time or long term,” said Keri Edwards, administrative services director.

Social Services Director Donna Hunter had even more wonderful things to say about Karen.

“She is a caring, loving, wonderful person who would be an asset to any team she worked with. I’m thankful she has chosen us to be with throughout the years,” said Donna. “I take pride when I speak of ‘our’ therapy department, and Karen and the job she does is the reason. Not once but time and time again, you can see Karen’s care and concern for her patients is genuine and from the heart. She has a smile each and every day she is here. She connects with our residents in a special way, a truly lasting bond you don’t get often enough in senior care. Karen is one of those rare gifts. We have had several residents return home after going through our PATH program, and for one reason or another some have returned to us again for therapy.

These people remember Karen and the connection she had with them.

This is a testament to the quality of care and true compassion Karen provides while doing her job. She does a wonderful job and it shows. I am so proud of her and so happy to know her.”

Obviously, Karen enjoys her profession, and it shows in the way she treats patients and goes above and beyond to help them.

“I enjoy helping others get stronger

and return to their prior level of function. I love being able hear the patient stories about their life and being able to bring a smile to their face each and every day,” said Karen.

When Karen’s not at Fulton Presbyterian Manor, you’ll find her spending time with her husband, Matt, and their four young children. She enjoys doing crafts and riding four-wheelers. Thank you, Karen, for all you do for our residents!
