Two generations in one family have made their home at Presbyterian Manor Mildred Dowling, or “Millie” as many residents and staff at Fulton Presbyterian Manor call her, tells a story about why she chose to live here. Millie explains that her father, Judge Oscar A. Kamp, also called Assisted Living at Presbyterian Manor his home. Millie lived in Montgomery City, Mo., from the time she was two years old until she moved to Presbyterian Manor. She worked as a teacher in Bellflower, then went to Wellsville to work as a teacher. That is when she married Kerry Dowling. Millie’s last year of teaching was at Montgomery City, where Kerry was on the school board. Kerry was a car salesman, and they built four different houses during their time together. Millie said her parents came to the grand opening of Fulton Presbyterian Manor and they said then that if they ever needed a place to go, they would come here. Unfortunately, Judge Kamp’s wife passed shortly after that decision. Judge Kamp had been a prosecuting attorney in Montgomery City for 20 years and a magistrate judge for 32 years. He retired after 52 years in the law. He was acquainted with the Callaway magistrate judge, and after

his retirement, he would travel to Callaway to fill in while that judge was on vacation. Judge Kamp was subject to mandatory retirement at the age of 80. Judge Kamp had been getting along fine in his own home while he was still able to work. One day he came to Millie and said, “I am going to move over to Fulton Presbyterian Manor.” Millie replied, “Oh, you are not ready for that yet!” Her father’s response was, “Look, this is not a typical nursing home.” Judge Kamp and Millie came over, and he moved to Room 11 at the end of the south hall. Judge Kamp enjoyed his time at Fulton Presbyterian Manor immensely. He
liked to take his chair out onto the landing and sit watching traffic go by. Millie said that her father’s experience here is what made her want to move here, too. The fact that her son Jim, a lawyer, is nearby is a bonus. He stops by to see her for 5– 10 minutes almost every morning before going to work. He also takes her to eat at the country club at least once a month. Millie is active in the Lunch Bunch at the Presbyterian Church next door. She also participates in many activities here at the Manor. We are honored to have hosted two generations of the same family at Fulton Presbyterian Manor. u

Fulton Presbyterian Manor honored for achievements designed to encourage its 16 locations and two hospices to achieve high levels of resident and employee satisfaction, meet financial goals, build philanthropic support for the organization’s mission and meet marketing goals. There are 11 areas measured for the Emerald Awards. To receive an emerald, a community has to meet its goals in all 11 areas. Certificates of recognition were given out to communities that reached their goals in one or more category. Fulton was recognized for reaching independent living resident satisfaction goals. Fulton Presbyterian Manor received a certificate of recognition from PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America) for reaching goals in fiscal year 2019, covering the months
of July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2019, at a banquet November 13 in Wichita, Kan. The recognition came through PMMA’s Emerald Awards Program,
“This recognition is a visible sign of Fulton Presbyterian Manor’s commitment to the mission of PMMA of providing quality senior services guided by Christian values,” said Bruce Shogren, chief executive officer for PMMA. PMMA has been providing quality senior services in Kansas and Missouri for more than 70 years. u
2020 Art is Ageless® calendar reveal January 8 Fulton Presbyterian Manor will host a 2020 Art is Ageless Calendar Reveal Party from 2 – 4 p.m. on Wednesday January 8 at Fulton Presbyterian Manor, 811 Center Street. The guests of honor are the two residents whose work was chosen for the 2020 calendar and greeting cards. Carol Bramon (calendar and greeting card) and Mary Kate Saltzman (greeting card) will be present to sign calendars and share their art works in person. Drinks and light refreshments will be served. Please join us to celebrate Carol and Mary Kate! u

Fulton Presbyterian Manor’s Art is Ageless® call for entries underway Fulton Presbyterian Manor has issued a call for entries for the Art is Ageless® juried exhibit to be held March 9 – 15, 2020. Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 40th anniversary Art is Ageless calendar in 2021. Winners will be announced at a reception at 2 p.m. March 16. Artists may choose to enter the exhibit only. For the competition, works are to have been completed

in the past five years (since January 2015). There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional. Works to be entered for judging need to be at Presbyterian Manor by March 8. The Art is Ageless® program encourages Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year.
