I started working as a CNA in 1994 at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village. When Presbyterian Village opened its doors, only north of the main lobby was completed. The south side of the building was still under construction.
Adult day services allow caregivers to take a break while feeling assured that their loved one is safe and comfortable in a supportive environment. Day services are available in Fort Scott’s assisted living setting, or trained staff will provide homebased services if needed.
The nurses were housed in an empty apartment on the north side of the building. We had less than 10 apartments filled at the time with others waiting until the building was completed to move in. During my first stint at Presbyterian Village, I worked as a CNA, private caregiver and the activities director.

In late 1995, I decided to stay home with my two small children. Soon after, I started a licensed in-home daycare business, caring for up to 12 children with two employees. From 1995 to 2016, I continued my childcare business, took care of several family members and did private home care for several older adults. In 2016, after my aunt passed away, I decided to take a two-year hiatus from home healthcare and continued with my childcare business. In 2018, I was ready to get back to taking care of older adults. I talked it over with my husband, and soon after applied at the Presbyterian Village once again. Bravo – continued on page 4
While caregivers are away, loved ones can visit Presbyterian Village and enjoy a long list of amenities, including relaxing in a suite apartment, a buffet style lunch, transportation, cable tv, wireless internet and life enrichment programming. Residents share homemade treats and memories at ice cream social The first ice cream social was held in 1744 when Maryland Governor Thomas Bladen served ice cream at a dinner party and has since become a popular way for Americans to socialize and celebrate. Fort Scott Presbyterian Village joined the tradition in late June by holding an ice cream social for tenants and friends of the community. The social featured three varieties of homemade ice cream – vanilla, chocolate and strawberry – and music. The social attracted a large crowd, with tenants and guests taking the opportunity to share their favorite ice cream memories. Margie Bailey shared a childhood memory, saying her family would have homemade ice cream each summer because her father was able to skim the cream off the top of milk cans and then crank and crank until there was ice cream. Becky Kellum, marketing director, said all tenants and guests enjoyed themselves. “The ice cream social was a hit,” she said.◆

Bravo – continued from page 1 I’ve worked at Presbyterian Village since 2018 as a float, companion and fill in. When anyone asks me why I work a second job I always tell them, “God made me a caregiver, and it’s what I like doing.” Presbyterian Village has given me the opportunity to work with some great nurses, staff and tenants. I love being around the tenants, hearing their stories of days long ago and learning from their life stories. If you take the time to listen to them, you can learn so much about our history and theirs! They have so much to offer.
