Resident Spotlight:

Shirley Richardson “Master Quilter” To get started quilting, Shirley Richardson took a class with Murray Eckles and started her first quilt, “Trip around the World.” It took her quite a while to finish it, as Shirley had other projects going at the same time.

Shirley has fashioned at least 20 quilts, gifting the quilts to each of her children, grandchildren, and now all four of her great-granddaughters.

“I am thinking there may be a couple more that will need a quilt in the future,” Shirley said.

When younger she crocheted or embroidered all of her doll clothes and still has her favorite doll dressed in one of her creations.

Megan Stein shifts role to director of nursing

Since joining the Manor of the Plains staff back in June, Megan Stein has served the community in a variety of capacities including assisted living director and quality assurance coordinator.

Recently, Megan shifted roles once again, this time becoming the community’s director of nursing.

Before joining Manor of the Plains, Megan had worked in long-term care as a certified nurse aide, an emergency room nurse and as a hospice and home care nurse. She received her associate degree from Dodge City Community College and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Fort Hays State University.

Along the way, Megan has completed the Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) and has received certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).

Since moving to Manor of the Plains six years ago, Shirley picked up reading as a favorite pastime, “Oh, and playing Rummikub and hand and foot with the girls.” u

Away from work, Megan enjoys traveling, going to the lake and spending time with family. She has two “fur babies,” Gizmo and Tank, and is currently in the process of planning her wedding to her fiancee Jess. u

Assignment form makes wishes clear With the end of the year rapidly approaching, it’s a great time to check one more thing off your list — make sure your wishes are respected and your family is protected by completing our Assignment of Amounts Due Resident Form (or reviewing your current Assignment form to make sure it is still correct). If you pass away while a resident of a PMMA® Community, this form will permit you to assign all refunds due to you to the persons specified in your form.

Completing the Assignment form is simple, and if you pass away while a resident of the Community, it can save your family significant time, money and frustration when receiving a refund of any amounts due to you from your PMMA Community. In other words, it can simplify the refund process and avoid the time and cost of estate administration.

This form works like a “beneficiary designation” in that it is effective upon your passing and permits you to designate who will receive all amounts due to you from your PMMA Community (for example, any refunds of your entrance fee deposit or monthly fees). Your Assignment form is revocable and can be changed at any time, so you are not locked if your circumstances change.

Your beneficiaries may include individuals, charities, or others

(including a will or trust so that your refund passes pursuant to your estate plan). You may designate the portion of your refund payable to each of them.

Some things to think about: • Who should receive my refund — certain named individuals, charities, or my will or trust?

• If I have more than one beneficiary, should they receive equal shares of my refund or should I designate different amounts/percentages among them?

• Do I want to designate a successor beneficiary to receive the amount originally allocated to a beneficiary who predeceases me?

Absent a valid Assignment form, the payment of your refund may be delayed until an estate is opened or

other legal proceedings are completed designating who is legally entitled to request the refund and receive payment. Unfortunately, that happens all-to-frequently and we want to help our residents and their families avoid that unpleasant (and sometimes expensive and time consuming) experience.

This is just a summary of how this important document works. We’ll be glad to provide you with the Assignment form to review and complete, and of course we encourage you to get any input you may desire from your family or other advisors.

Time to get the COVID booster

Manor of the Plains residents recently lined up to get their COVID boosters and flu shots. A big thank you to pharmacist Mike Coast and his team for taking such good care of our staff and residents. u

YMCA ribbon cutting

Jackie Regan, the daughter of Manor of the Plains resident Rick Regan and executive director of the Dodge City Family YMCA, had the honor of cutting the ribbon at a Sept. 22 ceremony unveiling the Y’s new lobby and updated weight room. Those in attendance included Joy Wiggins, Manor of the Plains sales and marketing counselor; Jenni Jones, regional director of sales and marketing; and Jackie’s dad, Rick.
