Four local artists among Art is Ageless® masterpiece level winners Four winning artists in Farmington Presbyterian Manor’s annual Art is Ageless® juried competition will be featured in the 2022 Art is Ageless calendar produced by PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®).

by Juanita Rapp Wyman, will appear in the calendar when it is released this fall.

Works by local winners are automatically entered into a masterpiece level competition with winning art from 14 other PMMA® communities. More than 160 entries were received for this year’s masterpiece competition. The winners are featured in the Art is Ageless calendar with pull-out postcards and greeting cards.

“Regency,” a quilt by Jeanette Bishop, will be featured on a postcard included in the 2022 calendar. “Tender Companions,” and “Brotherly Love,” paintings by Anita Alsup, “Blooms and Ribbon,” a painting by Barbara Stanfield, and “Curious Cow,” a drawing by Juanita Rapp Wyman, will be featured on greeting cards.

“I am blown away at the talent we have here in our community and am honored that we get to share this exhibit of artwork by seniors,” said ART IS AGELESS – continued on page 2

Teresa Pinkley retires, leaving volunteers in familiar hands After 16 years of service, Teresa Pinkley retired as volunteer coordinator in July, leaving behind some big shoes to fill.

“During her tenure, Teresa built a good, solid group of volunteers,” said Farmington Presbyterian Manor Executive Director Jane Hull. “She worked diligently selecting and placing volunteers in jobs where they would be successful and jobs they would love. She always made everyone

A copyrighted program of PMMA, Art is Ageless is open exclusively to people age 65 and older. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years.

PMMA’s Art is Ageless program encourages Farmington Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year.

Lessons from Ecclesiastes

In a nod to our Presbyterian heritage, we will be periodically sharing columns from our community chaplains in your Community Matters newsletter.

In July, the Rev. Elwyn Holmes of Salina’s First Presbyterian Church led our first worship service in over a year. He used the familiar words from Ecclesiastes 3:1-13 for his message. The reverend said that these words from centuries ago continue to remind us that life isn’t always great and it often brings things into our lives that we don’t like. He used “The Message” translation by Eugene Peterson. These words gave me renewed hope for our world.

Jeffery Kranz, an author who lives in Bellingham, Wash., tells us that “Ecclesiastes explores the unpredictability of life: we have an idea of how the world should work, but it rarely goes that way. And no matter how wise we are, or how hard we work, or how strong our faith is, we don’t have any guarantees and we are encouraged to be loyal to God and enjoy the simple things in life — because we really don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow.”

There’s an opportune time to do things, a right time for everything on the earth: A right time for birth and another for death, A right time to plant and another to reap, A right time to kill and another to heal, A right time to destroy and another to construct, A right time to cry and another to laugh, A right time to lament and another to cheer, A right time to make love and another to abstain, A right time to embrace and another to part, A right time to search and another to count your losses, A right time to hold on and another to let go, A right time to rip out and another to mend, A right time to shut up and another to speak up, A right time to love and another to hate, A right time to wage war and another to make peace.

But in the end, does it really make a difference what anyone does? I’ve had a good look at what God has given us to do — busywork, mostly.

True, God made everything beautiful in itself and in its time—but he’s left us in the dark, so we can never know what God is up to, whether he’s coming or going. I’ve decided that there’s nothing better to do than go ahead and have a good time and get the most we can out of life. That’s it: Eat, drink, and make the most of your job. It’s God’s gift.

There is an opportune time for everything. u

So, who would be willing to try to step in and fill those shoes? Turns out it would be Teresa’s own, newly acquired, daughter-inlaw—Melanie Schwalenberg.

“I had been teaching English from home via Zoom, and I missed working with real, live people. So, when I heard she was retiring, I told her to let Presbyterian Manor know that I was seriously interested in her job because I

knew how much she enjoyed it— especially the people she worked with,” said Melanie.

Now, after going through the interview process and being officially offered the job, Melanie feels honored to be carrying on her mother-in-law’s work.

“I feel very grateful to have this opportunity,” said Melanie. “I really love getting to work with the amazing, kind and helpful volunteers. It is neat to get to work with people that actually enjoy working for free.”

It’s been a big summer for Melanie.

In addition to landing the new job, she also married Teresa’s son, Kyle Marshall, on July 31. And while you hear about tumultuous mother-inlaw/daughter-in-law relationships, Melanie says that couldn’t be further from the truth between her and Teresa.

“Teresa and I both love home décor, shopping and reading. We hit it off right at the start, and I really value our relationship,” said Melanie. “I feel blessed to have a mother-in-law that brings so much positivity and goodness to our relationship.” u
