The Farmington Presbyterian Manor team is surrounded by its regional support team after receiving the Emerald Award Dec. 6 at a celebration in Wichita, Kan.

Farmington Presbyterian Manor honored for achievements Farmington Presbyterian Manor was recognized with an Emerald Award Level One from Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America for reaching goals in fiscal year 2018, July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2018.

The recognition came through PMMA’s Emerald Awards Program, designed to encourage its 17 locations and two hospices to achieve high levels of resident and employee satisfaction, meet financial goals, build philanthropic support for the organization’s mission and meet marketing goals. There are 11 areas measured for the Emerald Awards.

Kluvers enjoy the upsides to downsizing When you’ve been married for well over 50 years and have lived and traveled all over the world like Kenneth and Phyllis Kluver, you tend to accumulate a few things. When the time comes to move, the very idea of “downsizing” can be both daunting and scary, but for the Kluvers it was an opportunity.

“We had a 22-foot by 40-foot garage. It was full of stuff we had collected for 38 years. That’s how you run into trouble downsizing,” said Phyllis “But we did it the easy way. We took only what we thought we would need.”

For Kenneth, that meant leaving behind some of his bigger, more spaceconsuming power tools as well as his trusty lawnmower.

“I used to really love and enjoy mowing. To me it was therapy,” said Kenneth. “You’re in your own little world doing your thing.”

However, since moving into the community, Kenneth has learned to enjoy the opportunity to sit back, relax and let someone else take care of a few of the things that used to occupy a lot of his time.

“From the maintenance man to the contractor, everyone is so courteous,” said Kenneth. “If we have a maintenance problem, boom, they come down to fix it.”

And if you think all of that extra time on his hands has Kenneth sitting around with nothing to do, think again.

“You look at the activity calendar for every week, and, my goodness, if you’re bored, it’s because you have no initiative,” said Kenneth.

It’s that level of activity that was one of the things that drew Kenneth and Phyllis to Presbyterian Manors in the first place.

“This is a community. It’s not people just lying in a bed,” said Phyllis.

“These people are up doing things.”

Since moving in last July, the Kluvers have had no problem feeling as though they are a part of that community thanks to the

friendliness of their new neighbors.

“We could be sitting up by the dining hall before it opens and it’s a heartbeat before someone comes and sits down beside you and starts chatting,” said Kenneth.

Put it all together and a little “downsizing” has led the Kluvers to find their perfect fit.

“This feels like home. It did the first time we walked in,” said Phyllis.

Presbyterian Manor’s Art is Ageless® call for entries underway Farmington Presbyterian Manor has issued a call for entries for the Art is Ageless® juried exhibit to be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. between February 20-22, 2019. A reception will be at 2 p.m. February 22.

Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 2019 Art is Ageless calendar.

Artists may choose to enter the exhibit only. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years (since January 2014). There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional. The categories for submission include Christmas, drawing, fiber arts, mixed media, needlework, photography, painting

and sculpture/3D. Works to be entered for judging may be dropped off beginning February 5 at the business office between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and need to be at Presbyterian Manor by February 19.

The Art is Ageless® Program encourages Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year.

Local competition winners will join winners from 16 other Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America communities to be judged at the systemwide level.

Farmington Presbyterian Manor on U.S. News and World Report Best Short-Stay Rehab list Farmington Presbyterian Manor is on the new U.S. News and World Report Best Short-Stay Rehabs list. The senior living community received the highest score of High Performing to make the list, available at www.usnews.com/ best-nursing-homes/search.

New this year is a Short-Stay Rehabilitation rating evaluating the care delivered to patients after a hospitalization for surgery, heart attack, stroke or similar condition.

To be eligible for a short-stay rating, a center’s performance on at least one outcome measure and data on either physical therapy time or RN

and total nurse staffing must have been available from CMS. Outcome measures included the percentages of short-stay patients who were rehospitalized within 30 days, had an emergency room visit within 30 days and were successfully discharged to their home or community.

All Medicare- and Medicaidcertified health care centers were evaluated by U.S. News. To be eligible for an overall rating, a center must have received an overall star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in July 2018 and a staffing star rating in either April or July 2018.

Farmington in Missouri and Topeka and Wichita in Kansas were named High Performing in the new ShortStay category. The three were among 736 communities that received the High Performing designation in both categories.
