Remembering Sally Lorch

Sweet. Positive. Heroic. Adventure-seeker. These are just some of the words residents and staff have used to describe resident Sally Lorch who passed away on February 14, 2021. In her 100 years of loving life, Sally didn’t shy away from adventure and had an incredible gift at spreading positivity.

“She was a very special lady,” said Carol Winch, life enrichment director.

“She loved to travel. In fact, she used to go every year with her family to different places – last year was the first year her family didn’t get together to travel because of COVID-19. When she was in her mid 90s, she rode on a jet ski and also on the back of a Harley! I admired this lady. She said from the get-go, I’m going to live to be 100. And she lived one month past her 100th birthday.”

Throughout its 59-year history of serving the community, Farmington Presbyterian Manor has placed a strong emphasis on ensuring that the individual needs of every resident are met. Over the course of 2020, a sampling of Farmington Presbyterian Manor’s residents and their families have participated in monthly telephone interviews that include openended questions, as well as the opportunity to rate the community in specific categories.

Every month, Farmington

Presbyterian Manor has gathered its real-time survey results to gain a better understanding of the residents’ needs and make improvements when necessary.

By qualifying for the Pinnacle Customer Experience Award™, Farmington Presbyterian Manor has satisfied the rigorous demand of scoring in the top 15 percent of the nation across a 12-month average.

Assisted living residents and their family members rated the community in the top 15-percent for variety of food and menu options, communication, activities, meeting transportation needs and

overall customer experience.

In addition, health care residents and their families rated the community highly in overall satisfaction, nursing care, dining service, quality of food, cleanliness, meeting individual needs, laundry service, communication, response to problems, activities, admission process, safety and security, willingness to recommend to others and overall customer experience.

With vaccine distribution, internal restrictions are starting to loosen, allowing health care and assisted living residents to forgo quarantine if they leave the campus for physician appointments and other activities as long as they are not gone longer than 7 midnights. If an absence is longer than 7 days, the resident is required to quarantine and undergo COVID-19 testing. There will be no quarantine requirement for independent living residents who leave the community for an outing. ◆

Join Farmington Presbyterian Manor for Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research, a free virtual event, at 3 p.m. April 21 to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.

The event is one in a series of webinars exploring Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and some of the most important topics of concern to caregivers and those who are experiencing the disease.

From February to November, we’ll explore a different topic each month through virtual presentations led by the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Missouri.

The series is part of Farmington Presbyterian Manor’s Just Ask lifelong learning program, featuring topics and speakers of interest to seniors and their

Presbyterian Manor Art is Ageless® exhibit and reception features senior artists Local senior artists will be celebrated April 21 through 23 at Farmington Presbyterian Manor, 500 Cayce St., as the community hosts its annual Art is Ageless® exhibit and continues to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Art is Ageless® program.

The exhibit will be open to residents-only on site and posted to the community Facebook page, Facebook.com/ FarmingtonPresbyterianManor.

Winners will be announced at 2 p.m. April 23 via Facebook Live.

Artists compete in nine categories, including painting, drawing, photography, quilting and sculpture and may be designated as amateur or professional. The compete rules and category listing is found online at www.ArtIsAgeless.org. Local competition winners will join winners from 14 other PMMA communities to be judged at the systemwide level.

Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the Art is Ageless calendar in 2022.

Artists may choose to enter the exhibit only. For the competition,

works are to have been completed in the past five years (since January 2016).

There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional.

Works to be entered for judging need to be at Farmington Presbyterian Manor by April 19.

Art is Ageless is a trademarked program of PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America). The program offers senior artists the opportunity to share and display their artwork and reaffirms the agelessness of human creativity.

“It’s inspiring to see the beautiful pieces these seniors have created,” said Anne Allen, marketing director. “The joy it brings to them and others is wonderful, and that’s something we want to celebrate and share with the entire Farmington community.”

community residents. Since then, the program has expanded to include a juried art competition open to all seniors age 65 and older.

The Art is Ageless exhibit will feature works from local artists.

Plans remain flexible due to COVID-19. Works of art include acrylics, oils, photography and various other mediums, ranging from amateur to professional levels.

Winning pieces at the community level move on to a masterpiece level judging to determine which pieces are featured in the annual calendar and note cards.

Sally’s positive attitude and friendly nature could be felt by everyone in the community.

“She volunteered at the gift shop, and she planted the garden in the sitting area for residents,” said Carol. “She’s my hero, that’s for sure. She had the cutest little voice and was always so sweet and just a positive person.”

Resident Glenda Corless remembers Sally as a go-getter.

“When she was about 95 or 96, she started to learn how to play the piano. She bought a little keyboard, and I’d hear her practicing when I walked by her room. She wanted to get good enough to play at church services. I had to really laugh about that because she had a lot to learn!

She was something else.”

Resident Wanda Chatman remembers Sally’s love for flowers and life. “It was kind of funny, because one day I was picking

flowers in the garden for a while and Sally knocked on the window and shook her head no. She said, ‘that’s not a cutting flower garden, that’s a looking flower garden.’ She protected her flowers!”

In fact, Sally admired the red canna lilies growing outside under her bedroom window so much that she never wanted to move her room because she liked having those flowers to look at. They meant so much to her because her family had brought her those flowers to plant.

“She loved those flowers,” said Anne.

It’s no surprise that when Sally’s 100th birthday rolled around on January 15, 2021, the celebration would be as special as she was.

Sally celebrated her 100th birthday wearing a hat she had made that was decorated with Christmas lights. “She had a party and a good time,” said Carol. And what was as exciting as the party hat were two very special guests – Sally’s

son Dennis from Cape Girardeau, and her daughter Sharon from California. Their visit was made possible through Heart & Soul Hospice’s One More Time program as visitors have not been allowed at Presbyterian Manor due to COVID -19 restrictions.

“She seemed like she was really a person who enjoyed life. Being here 100 years says a lot for a person.

Bless her heart. She enjoyed her 100th birthday – that was really neat for her,” said Wanda.

Despite all her adventures and celebrations in life, Sally had said her most favorite, cherished memories were made with her children and grandchildren. She said her family was her most prized accomplishments and possessions.

Sally had also offered a few pieces of advice for living to be 100 years old – don’t take any medications you don’t need, don’t smoke, live a clean life and above all, keep a positive attitude. ◆

PMMA Founder’s Day honors its heroes and 72 years of heritage Employees of Farmington Presbyterian Manor will observe the founding of PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica) this month as the company salutes its heroes and heritage.

PMMA’s roots go back to 1947.

Alice Kalb, a widow from central Kansas, appealed to a Presbyterian Church organization to establish a home for seniors. Her vision laid the foundation for the first Presbyterian Manor community in Newton, Kan., and inspired others to do even more. Through the many decades, PMMA remained true to the spirit of Alice’s vision, providing

quality senior services guided by Christian values.

Each Founder’s Day, staff members re-commit to live our mission by signing the “WE PROMISE” board that lists the pillars to the mission: respecting that seniors retain their rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; assisting residents with specific needs; providing compassionate service; serve as a trusted resource; and, advocating for seniors.

“Our nearly 2,000 employees view what they do as a calling,” said Bruce Shogren, president and CEO. “Our dedicated employees make it

possible for us to sustain PMMA’s mission, as well as its heritage. I believe Alice would be very proud.”

Alice Kalb’s dream has turned into a network of 15 senior living communities and two hospices across Kansas and Missouri. A new senior living community is under development in Colorado Spring.
