Staff spotlight March is a time to recognize our valued staff members at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.

This month we observe National Registered Dietitian Day, Professional Social Workers Month and National Certified Nurses Day. Plus, we have our own employee appreciation events.

We want to highlight a few of our leadership team members for their contributions to residents and their fellow employees.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, we’re enjoying a new speaker system in our main dining room, where we host many of our major events and activities.

Many residents and visitors to Emporia Presbyterian Manor have noted lately that the existing sound system in our main dining room was not up to par.

Registered Dietitian Emily Prouse Emily is such an asset to our community. She is knowledgeable and passionate about her job as well as our residents.

On the stand-alone unit with just a microphone and a couple of speakers, it was difficult to hear people clearly, and the sound quality was poor. Claude Williamson, director of environmental services, said the new system is being permanently installed with overhead speakers and microphones. It is also being wired to allow paging.

The new sound system was first used at our resident Christmas party for independent and assisted living residents.

Emily is a creative thinker who works well with other members of our dining services team to go above and beyond in her duties.

Maria is always willing to lend a compassionate ear when her coworkers need someone to talk to.

One of her popular monthly events is a presentation about superfoods, and she shares much more content about food and nutrition that everyone in our community can use.

Entries are being accepted throughout March for Emporia Presbyterian Manor’s Art is AgelessŽ juried exhibit. The event is scheduled for April 9 to 27.

Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 2019 Art is Ageless calendar.

Artists may choose to enter the exhibit only. For the competition, works are to have been completed in the past five years (since January 2013). There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional. Works to be entered for judging are due at Presbyterian Manor by April 4.

Local competition winners will join winners from 16 other Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica communities to be judged at the systemwide level.

Artist of the Month Our featured artist for March is Nancy McKinzie. Nancy is an Emporia resident and a frequent finalist in our annual Art is Ageless® competition and exhibit.

Visit our Atrium gallery in March to view Nancy’s drawings and paintings, and join us to honor her at a reception March 23 from 4 to 6 p.m.

We’re excited to have it in place for this month’s annual Dialogue event with state legislators who represent the Emporia community (details at right).

“We have dreamed of upgrading our speaker system for some time, and with the help of a generous donor it has been made possible,” said Marketing Director Crystal Stock. “Many residents, staff and family members are very thankful to see this getting put into place, and we’re confident the new system will greatly enhance the events and activities we host for many years to come.”

Let’s have a dialogue Our annual Let’s Have a Dialogue event, presented by the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 10, in our main dining room. Beverages and breakfast will be provided.

This year we’ll hear from Kansas State Representatives Highland, Schreiber and Smith, and Kansas Senator Longbine about current political events. The Emporia community is invited to attend.

The Older Americans Month theme is “Engage at Every Age.” If you have ways that you are intentionally staying engaged in activities you’ve always loved, using technology or if you just want to tell the world what you love about living in your senior living community, we want to share the story.
