Residents get hands on experience with a new demo cooking program called “Teaching Kitchen.”

New kitchen concept better for residents and the environment When Food Service Director Johny Patwary joined the staff four years ago, the dining experience at Emporia Presbyterian Manor was “in a bad spot.”

“There were all these visions but no implementing changes. So, when I came here, that was my goal. People had a mentality about senior living communities cooking bland food and putting it on a plate. I told myself we need to change to a restaurant concept. It took a lot of work, but I’m glad we did it. We’re contracted with Morrison Living, and they’re the reason we’re able to do this,” said Johny.

The new concept that rolled out in September includes meals cooked from scratch, hormone-free meat and locally sourced food when available.

Emporia on U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Home list

Emporia Presbyterian Manor is on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes 2019 longterm stay list. The senior living community received the highest score of High Performing to make the list, available today at www. usnews.com/best-nursing-homes/ search.

The U.S. News and World Report list uses information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the government agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes. CMS assigns one to five stars to each community for how well it performs in health inspections, nurse staffing and level of quality care.

which communities are given the High Performing designation. This decision reflects expert opinion on the importance of staffing in quality of care, as well as the availability since April 2018 of more accurate data on nurse staffing levels in each community or center.

More than 3,100 nursing homes received CMS’ top rating of five stars, while just 1,139 nursing homes earned the top Overall rating for long-term care issued by U.S. News, according to the U.S. News website.

This is the ninth consecutive year Emporia Presbyterian Manor has appeared on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes long-term care list.

All Medicare- and Medicaidcertified health care centers were evaluated by U.S. News. To be eligible for an overall rating, a center must have received reimbursement from CMS in July 2019 and had sufficient data to evaluate quality in that rating.

“One of our key focus areas is to minimize food waste in our dining service and try to make it as environment friendly as possible.

We don’t use Styrofoam products anymore. All our disposal products are either biodegradable or compostable. We use our vegetable trimmings to make pickled vegetables and use it as alternative options of our guests,” said Johny.

Education is also part of the new concept.

It is just a platform for our guests to explore food, culinary and nutrition literacy that will positively impact food choices and experiences,” said Johny. ◆

Honor a loved one with a luminaria There’s still time to honor the memory of family and friends this holiday season through our luminaria program. The luminarias can be purchased for $25 each and will be displayed around our community in honor of a loved one. All proceeds benefit Emporia Presbyterian Manor’s Good Samaritan Program. The luminaria lighting ceremony will take place December 7. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. followed by the lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Cookies and hot cocoa will be served. ◆

Give a gift, get a bell

“Every time a bell rings an angel gets it wings.” Each year we put up the Angel tree in our front lobby for all to see as they enter our doors. This is another great way to honor or memorialize someone that you love.

We recognize that the holidays can be difficult for those who struggle with the loss of family and friends and want to offer ways that our residents, family members and the Emporia community as a whole can feel peace as they glance at the tree. In exchange for a gift to the Good Samaritan Program, which provides funding assistance for residents who have outlived their financial resources through no fault of their own, a bell will c e l e b be added to the tree for every contribution. ◆

Ho-ho-holiday events this season at Emporia The halls of our community have been decked and there is plenty to be merry about as we celebrate the holiday season! We have lots of new memories to make and old traditions to continue this month.

Resident Christmas parties December 10 at 2:30 p.m. – Memory Care neighborhood – Families are invited December 12 at 4:30 p.m. – Jones Health Care – Families are invited December 17 at 4:30 p.m. – Assisted Living and Independent Living Community entertainment From carolers to bell ringers, we have a number of performers planning to entertain us throughout the month. We are also planning a Christmas lights tour around town and this month’s Happy Hour will be Christmas-themed, of course. And who could forget our annual Christmas parade?

Staff traditions Over the years, the staff have enjoyed celebrating traditions such as the staff Christmas party, which always includes lots of food and fun. We also recognize staff who have been here for milestone years and announce the employee of the year. Staff also enjoy celebrating with residents at their Christmas parties and participate in a Secret Santa game, giving gifts to the residents. ◆
