Art is Ageless® call for entries Lawrence Presbyterian Manor has issued a call for entries for the Art is Ageless juried exhibit to be held Feb. 13-20, 2018.

Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 2019 Art is Ageless calendar.

Artists may choose to enter the exhibit only. For the competition, works are to have been completed in the past five years (since January 2013). There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional. Works to be entered for judging need to be at Presbyterian Manor by 2 p.m. Feb. 11.

The Art is Ageless® Program encourages Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic ART, continued on page 3

Emerald Awards Program Lawrence Presbyterian Manor receives recognition Lawrence Presbyterian Manor received a certificate of recognition from Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America for reaching goals in fiscal year 2017, covering the months of July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2017.

The recognition came through PMMA’s Emerald Awards Program, designed to encourage its 17 locations and 2 hospices to achieve high levels of resident and employee satisfaction, meet financial goals, build philanthropic support for the organization’s mission and meet marketing goals. There are 11 areas measured for the Emerald Awards.

To receive an emerald, a community has to meet its goals in all 11 areas.

Certificates of recognition were given out to communities that reached their goals in one or more category.

Lawrence was recognized for achieving a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and for meeting financial performance goals.

2. Take a time out. When the battery in my bathroom clock died, I took a good look at the clock. It was decades old, and the white plastic frame had yellowed badly. Impulsively, I threw it out. Along with the clock, I discarded the notion that every moment must be tracked, relieving the stress that builds when I think I don’t have time or won’t have time.

3. Downsize emotional reactions. Looking at the big picture is important — except when that’s too overwhelming. One day long ago, I cried in a therapist’s office, mourning the death of a friend and obsessing about a crisis at work. Looking at the “small picture” can help.

4. Find more teachers. When people come along who know more than I do, especially about things I want to know, I do whatever it takes to learn what they have to teach.

5. Take the short view. Worrying about what may or may not come to pass may help me prepare for an uncertain future, but it also propels me into a time beyond my control.

1. Embrace green therapy. Looking at nature — at the edge of the continent, in a state park or in your own backyard — beats looking out a window any day. Stand in the sun. Let the wind mess up your hair. Breathe deep.

Do I have clothes to wear? This month’s rent money? Food in the fridge?

Family and friends to call on for help? If so, I am OK just now. If not, I can devise a strategy to improve the situation — and then I can head outdoors for some free green therapy. See resolution No. 1.
