Rolla Presbyterian Manor Art is Ageless® exhibit and reception features senior artists Local senior artists will be celebrated April 11 through 14 at Rolla Presbyterian Manor, as the community hosts its annual Art is Ageless® exhibit.

Rolla Presbyterian Manor resident inducted into Rolla High School Hall of Fame In February, Leland Womack was inducted into the Rolla High School Hall of Fame. Leland had a 28-year career with Rolla Public Schools, including two stints as a teacher at Rolla High School. Now in his nineties, Leland is a valued member of the Presbyterian Manor community.

Rolla Presbyterian Manor also will hold a reception to announce the winners from 6-7 p.m. April 14. Please RSVP to Joelle Freeland at 573-364-7336.

Art is Ageless is a trademarked program of PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®). The program offers senior artists the opportunity to share and display their artwork and reaffirms the agelessness of human creativity.

Works will be on exhibit at the community for residents only. The Art is Ageless exhibit will be held virtually for friends of the program on the community’s Facebook page, Facebook.com/RollaPresbyterianManor.

“It’s inspiring to see the beautiful pieces these seniors have created,” said Joelle Freeland, marketing director. “The joy it brings to them and others is wonderful, and that’s something we want to celebrate and share with the entire Rolla community.”

Leland came to Rolla in 1955 to teach biology at RHS. He later graduated from Lincoln University with a Master of Education degree.

In 1977, he returned to the classroom to finish his career teaching science at Rolla Junior High School and Rolla Middle School.

In 1971, Leland left the classroom to accept the position of administrative assistant for curriculum at Rolla Public Schools.

In 1975, Leland received the first Bob Carter Memorial Conservation Award, presented for his promotion of the Rolla School

Leland retired from the public school system in 1983, but he continued to find ways to contribute to the community. He taught biology to nursing students at Park College and Rolla Technical Institute, trained hospice volunteers

for seven years and shared his knowledge of horticulture with the local Master Gardener program.

He shared his talents as a member of a barbershop quartet and member of the choir at Rolla United Methodist Church, where Leland also volunteered to maintain the church grounds. u

Acceptance comments from Leland Womack regarding the Rolla High School Hall of Fame induction Thank you for honoring me with this induction into the Rolla High School Hall of Fame. I am sorry I can’t be with you tonight, but as a teacher of science, and a 93year-old man, I am taking every precaution during these very trying times.

My career started with the trust of my Principal, Mr. Miller, who hired me without an interview. I respected him greatly and he had a major influence on the educator I became. Every year at Rolla High School was a pleasure.

Congratulations to the other inductees and thank you again for this honor.

PMMA celebrates history with Founder’s Day PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®) employees will observe the founding of the senior living system this month as the company celebrates its 73-year history of serving seniors in Kansas and Missouri.

PMMA’s roots go back to 1947.

Alice Kalb, a widow from central Kansas, appealed to a Presbyterian Church organization to establish a home for seniors. Her vision laid the foundation for the first Presbyterian Manor community in Newton, Kan., and inspired others to do even more. Through the many decades, PMMA® remained true to the spirit of Alice’s vision, providing quality senior services guided by Christian values.

re-commit to live our mission by signing the “WE PROMISE” board that lists the pillars of the mission: respecting that seniors retain their rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; assisting residents with specific needs; providing compassionate service; serving as a trusted resource; and advocating for seniors.

“Our nearly 2,000 employees view what they do as a calling,” said Bruce Shogren, president and CEO. “Our dedicated employees make it possible for us to sustain PMMA’s mission, as well as its heritage. I believe Alice would be very proud.”

Retired beauty shop owner favors florals Rolla-area artist Agnes “Mutz” Maples has been entering the Art is Ageless® competition at Rolla Presbyterian Manor for the past five years.

“Once I started art class here at The Centre, I realized how much I enjoyed drawing and painting, especially flowers,” said Mutz, who turned 85 last month.

Last year, one of Mutz’s entries was selected for inclusion in the honorable mention gallery in the 2022 Art is Ageless calendar.

“Black Beauty” is in the mixed media/crafts category, but it evokes the kinds of floral paintings that Mutz favors. She recreated the

The winners of this year’s Art is Ageless competition at Rolla Presbyterian Manor will go on to be judged against work from 14 other PMMA® communities.

Mutz is one of four Rolla-area artists whose work was reproduced in the 2022 calendar.

Mutz began painting six years ago.

A native of Herman, Mo., she lived and worked in Chicago for many years, where she owned and operated a beauty shop. After retirement, she moved to a small town on Table Rock Lake. u
