Five local artists among Art is Ageless® masterpiece level winners Five winning artists in Parsons Presbyterian Manor’s annual Art is Ageless® juried competition will be featured in the 2023 Art is Ageless calendar produced by PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®).

“Festive Snowman,” a Christmas entry by Lorraine Evert, and “Cherokee,” a Drawing by Jane Parish, will appear in the calendar when it is released this fall.

Works by local winners are automatically entered into a masterpiece level competition with winning art from 14 other PMMA® communities. More than “Festive Snowman,” by Lorraine 170 entries were received for this year’s masterpiece competition. The winners are Evert featured in the Art is Ageless calendar with pull-out postcards and greeting cards.

“Iris Sparkle,” a Mixed Media/Crafts entry by Grace Pierce, will be featured on the pull-out postcards included in the 2023 calendar.

“Christmas Magic,” a Christmas entry

by Jane Parish, and “Dresden Plate Quilt,” a Quilting entry by Jaunita Shepard, will be included in the calendar’s honorable mention gallery.

Assisted Living Week’s theme is Joyful Moments.

Assisted Living Week September 11-17

Assisted Living Week was started in 1995 as a way to recognize the role assisted living plays when it comes to caring for seniors in the United States.

This year, the week’s theme is “Joyful Moments.” The goal is to honor the residents, family members, staff, and volunteers who come together to create fun and joyful activities that leave everyone with beautiful memories.

This year’s theme is especially meaningful after dealing with COVID-19 restrictions for the last two years.

The hope is that everyone will find “happiness, joy, and fulfillment in both the big and small moments of life.”

Assisted Living Week was established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL).

Local artist enjoys exploring her creativity in retirement For Lorraine Evert, retirement has been an opportunity to get back to painting, long one of her favorite pastimes.

The Parsons-area artist always enjoyed sketching, but she began painting in earnest when she was a young mother.

Another painting by Lorraine Evert that placed in the 2022 Art is Ageless masterpiece competition, and “Majestic Bull Elk” will be reproduced on a greeting card.

“I spent a lot of time painting while my kids were sleeping,” she remembers.

Over the years, Lorraine continued to make the occasional painting as a gift, often when she was asked to.

Now she’s getting used to having the freedom to paint whatever she wants.

“One of my retirement goals has been to dedicate a lot of my time to painting, and I’ve done that,” she said.

Her efforts have paid off in the Art Is Ageless® competition at Parsons Presbyterian Manor. For the second year in a row, her work has placed in the masterpiece-level competition and will be featured in the annual Art is Ageless calendar.

This year, a pair of Lorraine’s paintings received masterpiece-level distinction: “Festive Snowman” will be reproduced in the 2023 calendar, and “Majestic Bull Elk” will be featured on an Art is Ageless birthday card.

Lorraine. Who is 69, is drawn to subjects from nature, including landscapes, plants and animals, which she renders in a naturalistic way. She painted “Majestic Bull Elk” as a gift for her husband.

“I’ve tried to paint more impressionistic or more modern, and it’s just not me,” she said. “I like

to paint something that looks real.”

Lorraine jokes that she was never quite sure what she wanted to be when she grew up, and she held a variety of different jobs during her career. For nearly two decades, she worked in the banking field. She was the administrative assistant in a prison for a while and also served as the director of a Chamber of Commerce.

She went back to school to study accounting, but found it wasn’t creative enough for her. Instead, she shifted to the human resources program. Lorraine worked in the HR department for a factory in Parsons. until her retirement.

Now she’s pleased to turn her attention to painting with the goal of

selling enough of her work to cover her costs. She has sold a small number of paintings and plans to show some of her work at Free State Cigars, the new cigar lounge in Parsons.

She’s still getting used to painting whatever she wants. Still, it can be hard to decide — there are so many potential subjects.

Maybe, she says, she’ll write them down on scraps of paper and draw one at a time from a bowl.

Regardless, she knows she’ll enjoy the process.

“I found out what I want to be when I grow up, and that’s retired,” Lorraine said. “I wanted to retire while I can still enjoy my life.” u

Parsons Presbyterian Manor shares customer service survey responses Parsons Presbyterian Manor continues to seek customer feedback through monthly telephone surveys.

Each month, residents and their representatives are randomly selected to participate in telephone satisfaction surveys conducted by Pinnacle Quality Insight.

The graphic highlights some of the survey results. All scores are given on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the highest score and 1 the lowest score.

Between July 2021 and June 2022, Parsons Presbyterian Manor residents and their families gave the community high scores for demonstrating dignity and respect, for the quality of the food, and for addressing individual needs.

One resident’s family said she would recommend to others. “I would tell them it’s safe, it is clean. Most of the quality of care is excellent. He loves it there.”
