Looking back on decades of community commitment Local supporter and PMMA board of trustee member Dan Harris has a long history with Manor of the Plains. “The bank I was with here in Dodge back when the bonds for Manor of the Plains were issued was the paying agent for the bonds, and I was running the trust department at that bank. I actually signed all of the interest payment checks at that time. That was my first involvement with the Manor,” said Dan.

Whenever you leave your residence or are in the presence of others, wear a cloth mask or face covering over your nose and mouth, wash your hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol-based gel, and maintain a safe social distance of six feet or more between yourself and others with whom you do not live. Practicing these simple safety measures can help stop the spread of COVID-19.u

And that was just the beginning of a long commitment with Manor of the Plains and the Dodge City community. “I have always been very involved in the community over my 26 years in the banking industry here in Dodge City. I have been president of the local Chamber of Commerce, I was on the Dodge City Days committee for probably close to 20 years and served as chairman for several years. One of the first residents at Manor of the Plains was Lois Bryson and she was one of my trust customers until she passed away. I am guessing she may have recommended me for the advisory committee but I’m not sure. About 14 years ago I was asked to join the board of directors for Presbyterian Manors and have been on the board since then,” said Dan. So, what inspired Dan to continue his support of Manor of the Plains over all these years? “It is the finest retirement community in Dodge City, and I have had the pleasure of having many of my clients live at the Manor. My father was there for a short time before he passed away and his care was outstanding. It is a very important part of this community where I have lived for almost all of my life,” said Dan.

“I think being the first continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in our area was very important to the residents of Dodge City. We still are really the only full CCRC, and I think that is why we continue to be very important to the retirement community. I also think the community involvement by Manor of the Plains has been very important for the success of the community. The Christian concert that they added to Dodge City Days years ago has been a very important part of that celebration.”
Dan also plans to continue to serve on the Board as long he’s wanted.
What are his hopes and vision for Manor of the Plains over the next 30 years? “I hope we can continue to provide the highest quality of care guided by Christian values to the seniors of this community and the surrounding

Manor of the Plains on U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Home list Manor of the Plains in Dodge City has been named “High Performing” by U.S. News and World Report in both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. Being a High Performing community places Manor of the Plains on the U.S. News and World Report’s Best Nursing Homes list for 2020-21, available at www.usnews.com/ nursinghomes.
for short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. The 10 quality measures focus on staffing, outcomes, resident complaints and processes of care. Some of the measures used by U.S. News are not included in the CMS approach to determining 5-star ratings.
Manor of the Plains is a PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica) community. The campus offers both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care in its 50-bed health care center. In addition, the campus offers independent and assisted living.
U.S. News added the ShortTerm Rehabilitation rating in 2018 evaluating the care delivered to patients after a hospitalization for surgery, heart attack, stroke, injury or similar condition. In 2019, U.S. News added a Long-Term Care rating evaluating the care delivered to residents who are no longer able to live independently and need help with daily activities such as eating, getting in or out of bed or a wheelchair, using stairs, or getting dressed, as well as administering needed medical care.
All Medicare- and Medicaidcertified health care centers were evaluated by U.S. News. To be eligible for an overall rating, a center must have received reimbursement from CMS in July 2020 and had sufficient data to evaluate quality in that rating. U.S. News uses information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the government agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes and skilled nursing centers. CMS assigns one to five stars to each community for how well it performs in health inspections, nurse staffing and level of quality care. Over the past two years, U.S. News changed its focus from the CMS star ratings to specific quality measures
In order to be included on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes list, a skilled nursing center had to receive the High Performing designation in either the short-term rehabilitation or longterm care categories. In 2020, CMS awarded 5-stars to 3,689 skilled nursing centers. A total of 3,277 skilled nursing centers were recognized as Best Nursing Homes in 2020 – 2,362 in short-term rehabilitation and 1,623 in longterm care. Just 708 skilled nursing communities received this
designation in both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. In addition to Manor of the Plains, six PMMA locations are on the longterm care honoree list with high-performing ratings: Aberdeen Village (Olathe), Arkansas City, Lawrence, Topeka and Wichita in Kansas and Aberdeen Heights (Kirkwood) in Missouri. Manor of the Plains (Dodge City), Aberdeen Village (Olathe) and Wichita in Kansas and Aberdeen Heights (Kirkwood) in Missouri were named High Performing in the Short-Stay category, placing them among 708 skilled nursing communities to be ranked as High Performing for both categories. “Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica employees continue to focus their efforts on delivering quality care every day,” said PMMA President and CEO Bruce Shogren. “The High Performing designation confirms their good work.”u

In the spotlight: Joey Stroud Get to know Joey Stroud, the new dining services director who joined the Manor of the Plains staff in September. Prior to this position, Joey was a manager at Applebee’s in Dodge City and Lawrence. “The challenge and opportunities health care offers drew me to work here,” Joey said.

It didn’t take long for Joey to discover his dining services favorite thing about his new job. “My absolute director favorite part of the job would have to be the residents,” said Joey. He has a vision for the dining services team, too. “I want to have a staff that can provide a fun, memorable experience at every meal.” When he’s not at work, Joey enjoys his hobbies and spending time with family. “I’m a video game nerd and musician. I’m also a familyoriented guy, but single with no kids. Just a lot of awesome nieces and nephews,” said Joey. Welcome to the team, Joey! u
