Residents Phil and Patricia Anderson celebrate 60 years of marriage
On February 2nd, Lawrence Presbyterian Manor residents Phil and Patricia Anderson celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss. What began with an unconventional “blind date” while both were students at the University of Kansas has led to decades of happiness.
“Someone wanted me to have a date with him and I didn’t really want to,” Patricia recalled. “I said I would go if he got my friend a date.”
Her friend’s date happened to be Phil Anderson.
“About midway through the evening, Phil and I just left, and we haven’t seen the other two since,” Patricia laughed.
The pair journeyed as far away as Poughkeepsie, NY before eventually returning to Lawrence.
“We just grew up together,” Patricia said. “We were 20 and 21 when we got married so we really did, quite literally, finish growing up together.”
The Andersons say choosing Lawrence Presbyterian Manor was easy since Phil’s mother had been a resident years earlier.
“It was like coming home in a way,” Patricia said. “The continuum of care, which we have both now used, is so important and we knew that coming in.”
Phil’s older brother was also a resident at The Manor.
“There’s just a homey feeling and a homey atmosphere at this place,” she recalled.
Happy Anniversary to Phil and Pat Anderson! u
Unshakeable Hope
By Rev. Richard Russell
With the coming of Spring later this month we have hope of seeing new life coming from the brown and dreary ground and from the trees. I have always loved seeing the little flowers, bursting forth from the ground, even when there was still snow, also from the trees that flower, the dogwoods, the red buds, and so many more. It is truly a renewal of hope!
I was reading again from the book, “Praying the Promise” written by Max Lucado and Andrea Lucado in which they share about God’s Unshakable Hope and His promises that He gives to us from His Word. One student of the Bible spent a year and a half counting the promises of God and found 7,487 promises! These are promises that give us true hope that Rests in Him. One of my favorite scriptural promises comes from proverbs 3: 56: “Trust in the lord, with all your heart and lean, not into your own understanding in all your ways, submit to him and he will make straight your paths.” We can have unshakable faith when we are trusting in a God that can do all things and a God who wants to care for us in His loving way.
Max Lucado uses Psalm 19:1-2, Isaiah 55:8-9, Jeremiah 9:23-24 and Romans 1:19-20 to pray God’s promises back to Him by praying:

Rules of the Phog: Lawrence Presbyterian Manor resident reflects on book she wrote about historic Allen Fieldhouse
As season ticket holders for numerous years, Mary Burchill and her husband, Brower, have taken in many a basketball game at historic “Phog” Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence. The Presbyterian Manor residents, like many in the area, are big Jayhawk basketball fans.
“I was there when the Fieldhouse opened,” Mary Burchill recalled.
She further recalled that she and Brower often arrived early for games, allowing her to take in all the gameday traditions that are unique to the “Cathedral of College Basketball.” Eventually, she compiled those traditions in a book, A Fan’s Guide to KU Men’s Basketball at Allen Fieldhouse.
“There is a lot of emphasis in the book on the various

“Thank you for being a God who wants me to know you. You have not hidden yourself from me. Father, at times I have not believed in you. I have wanted more proof, more evidence. But you promised that you have revealed yourself in creation to all of your children. When doubts come, I will cling to your promises. Your wisdom surpasses, all wisdom
traditions that go on, as well as what to expect if you attend a game,” she said. “Someone who lives in western Kansas who has perhaps never had an opportunity to get to Lawrence can get a firsthand account of what that experience is like by reading the book.”
The Fieldhouse, known as one of the most historic and tradition-rich arenas in all of sports, first opened its doors in 1955.
Burchill was also working on releasing another book at the time this article was written. The book – a biography of Elizabeth Watkins, a very important figure in Lawrence –was expected to come out by the end of February. u
on this earth. Your Waze are much higher than mine. I could study you and your words for the rest of my life, and still only scratch the surface of the depths of who you are. You are at once knowable and unknowable. You’ve revealed yourself to me, but so much of you is a mystery and always will be.”

yourself to me through your Scriptures in through your creation. Reveal yourself to me through conversations and relationships. I am so grateful for your promises. Amen.
I challenge you to look for God’s many problems in His Word and use them as part of your prayers. He wants to give to you and me His unshakable HOPE! u

Rock Chalk (and EMAW) Watch Party!
The Sunflower Showdown was a good chance for a watch party at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.
Resident Bob Bearson organized the watch party for the January 31 KU vs. K-State men’s basketball game.
“Some of the games are on ESPN Plus,” Bob explained. “Not all our residents are able to access it or get it to work. I can, so I organized the watch parties. The Manor has been nice enough to let us get together and stream the games in the recreation room.”
Residents often enjoy snacks and refreshments during the watch parties.
While KU fans probably outnumber K-State fans at the Manor, all are welcome and have enjoyed one another’s company.
KU won the January 31st contest, while K-State was victorious earlier in the year. u
generation” resident Joan Messineo is loving life at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor
When choosing a place to call home during retirement, it never hurts to have some firsthand experience. Lawrence Presbyterian Manor resident Joan Messineo knows that as well as anyone.
“My Dad, after he became a widower, was a resident here at the Manor,” she said. “After seeing the way he was treated and the incredible care he received, it was a no brainer for me to retire here, too.”
Messineo, who lived in Las Vegas for a time due to her husband’s work as a Presbyterian minister, loves being back in Lawrence.
“My kids and grandkids both went to KU,” she said. “I still love watching the games, usually with my son at his house.”
As for the community itself, Messineo says she truly loves her surroundings and looks forward to many years of loving life at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor! u
